  • Why can't c# use inline anonymous lambdas or delegates?

    I hope I worded the title of my question appropriately. In c# I can use lambdas (as delegates), or the older delegate syntax to do this: Func<string> fnHello = () => "hello"; Console.WriteLine(fnHello()); Func<string> fnHello2 = delegate() { return "hello 2"; }; Console.WriteLine(fnHello2()); So why can't I "inline" the lambda or the delegate body, and avoid capturing it in a named variable (making it anonymous)? // Inline anonymous lambda not allowed Console.WriteLine( (() => "hello inline lambda")() ); // Inline anonymous delegate not allowed Console.WriteLine( (delegate() { return "hello inline delegate"; })() ); An example that works in javascript (just for comparison) is: alert( (function(){ return "hello inline anonymous function from javascript"; })() ); Which produces the expected alert box. UPDATE: It seems you can have an inline anonymous lambda in C#, if you cast appropriately, but the amount of ()'s starts to make it unruly. // Inline anonymous lambda with appropriate cast IS allowed Console.WriteLine( ((Func<string>)(() => "hello inline anonymous lambda"))() ); Perhaps the compiler can't infer the sig of the anonymous delegate to know which Console.WriteLine() you're trying to call? Does anyone know why this specific cast is required?

  • Running XPath on child node.

I'm trying to do a xpath lookup on nodes returned by xpath lookup, but it doesn't seem to work as I expected.XPaths executed on the child nodes of a document seem to be executd against hthe root node of the document (in the example, the inventory tag.), instead of the root of the provided node. Am I missing something here? I'm new to XPath. Also, please don't answer "just do //book[author='Neal Stephenson'/title". I have a legitimate use case, and this is a simplified example.   • Preventing browser loading indicator with Chrome + GWT-rpc.

    Hello. I'm writing a ajax chatting webapp, just to test working with GWT. To simulate server side push of chat messages from the server to the browser, I have a XHR request running behind. It all works fine - except on Chrome, the browser is displaying a loading icon (a spinner) because of the XHR request on background. Is there any way to avoid this? I've tested it in Firefox, and it doesn't display such behavior.

  • Jquery Flexslider - can't see navigational images (manualControl)

    I've spent a lot of time looking at the post on 3/13/12 re: manual controls, but isn't getting me all the way there...probably because I don't know jquery. Sorry, newbie on board. I'm trying to get the right/left arrows to show, as well as the 1, 2, 3...at the bottom. They are there, I see the lists on Firebug, just don't know how to add them to the "hook" (?) so they appear.   • How should I define a composite foreign key for domain constraints in the presence of surrogate keys

    I am writing a new app with Rails so I have an id column on every table. What is the best practice for enforcing domain constraints using foreign keys? I'll outline my thoughts and frustration. Here's what I would imagine as "The Rails Way". It's what I started with. Companies: id: integer, serial company_code: char, unique, not null Invoices: id: integer, serial company_id: integer, not null Products: id: integer, serial sku: char, unique, not null company_id: integer, not null LineItems: id: integer, serial invoice_id: integer, not null, references Invoices (id) product_id: integer, not null, references Products (id) The problem with this is that a product from one company might appear on an invoice for a different company. I added a (company_id: integer, not null) to LineItems, sort of like I'd do if only using natural keys and serials, then added a composite foreign key. LineItems (product_id, company_id) references Products (id, company_id) LineItems (invoice_id, company_id) references Invoices (id, company_id) This properly constrains LineItems to a single company but it seems over-engineered and wrong. company_id in LineItems is extraneous because the surrogate foreign keys are already unique in the foreign table. Postgres requires that I add a unique index for the referenced attributes so I am creating a unique index on (id, company_id) in Products and Invoices, even though id is simply unique. The following table with natural keys and a serial invoice number would not have these issues. LineItems: company_code: char, not null sku: char, not null invoice_id: integer, not null I can ignore the surrogate keys in the LineItems table but this also seems wrong. Why make the database join on char when it has an integer already there to use? Also, doing it exactly like the above would require me to add company_code, a natural foreign key, to Products and Invoices. The compromise... LineItems: company_id: integer, not null sku: integer, not null invoice_id: integer, not null does not require natural foreign keys in other tables but it is still joining on char when there is a integer available. Is there a clean way to enforce domain constraints with foreign keys like God intended, but in the presence of surrogates, without turning the schema and indexes into a complicated mess?

    Hey, Anyone knows how to change cursor size in Edittext in Anroid??? I'm trying to implement SMS function. I used EditText and tried to put background image. The background image has lines so I need to put extra space between lines so that the background image and the lines fit nicely. But... if I use linespacingextra, it increase cursor as well. That means the fontsize will be smaller than the cursor size. Any idea??

  • How can I return json from my WCF rest service (.NET 4), using Json.Net, without it being a string,

    The DataContractJsonSerializer is unable to handle many scenarios that Json.Net handles just fine when properly configured (specifically, cycles). A service method can either return a specific object type (in this case a DTO), in which case the DataContractJsonSerializer will be used, or I can have the method return a string, and do the serialization myself with Json.Net. The problem is that when I return a json string as opposed to an object, the json that is sent to the client is wrapped in quotes. Using DataContractJsonSerializer, returning a specific object type, the response is: {"Message":"Hello World"} Using Json.Net to return a json string, the response is: "{\"Message\":\"Hello World\"}" I do not want to have to eval() or JSON.parse() the result on the client, which is what I would have to do if the json comes back as a string, wrapped in quotes. I realize that the behavior is correct; it's just not what I want/need. I need the raw json; the behavior when the service method's return type is an object, not a string. So, how can I have my method return an object type, but not use the DataContractJsonSerializer? How can I tell it to use the Json.Net serializer instead? Or, is there someway to directly write to the response stream? So I can just return the raw json myself? Without the wrapping quotes?   • Publishing SWF using Adobe Flash

    Hello everyone, I have a SWF file which contains of an image (1keyframe) and also, it contains an AS3 file with the following codes: var loader:Loader=new Loader(); var ur:URLRequest=new URLRequest("1.swf"); loader.load(ur); addChild(loader); so basically, i am trying to play the swf file (1.swf - an audio) while the image is being displayed. What I want to know is how will I be able to publish this project into an SWF file which can still play as expected even without the raw 1.swf file. I can publish SWF right now but when I delete the 1.swf file, my generated swf can only display the image. Help me please. Thanks in advance :)

    Hey, For university we're supposed to write a game (the language is modula2 little chance you know it). Each tetromino is defined through a central piece and 3 relative pieces, Now when it comes to rotation i just rotate the relative blocks (linear algebra). What i am asking myself is how to handle the rotations a user does when the piece has already "landed" because than the user has a little time left to move his pieve quickly into the desired position but in tetris versions all over the web you can "rotate over" other pieces, but i dont seem to get it with my rotation. Over what piece do i need to rotate? are there guidelines? Thanks

    I'll start by quoting google's blog Project owners can now create multiple repositories for their project, and they can choose to make any of those new repositories a clone of any of the project's other repositories. These project clones share the same commit access permissions as the original project and make it easier for project members to work together on new features. A common pattern in the Mercurial world is to place each "official" branch into a separate repository with naming conventions like "project-crew", "project-stable", and so on. I've done exactly this. I have my default repository and then I've cloned that repository to a repo named "dev". I intend to use the default repository as my stable repo and then the dev repo as my primary development repo. Now I'm just wondering how on earth I should go about to pull and push between the default and the dev repositories?

    Hi Chaps, I have a PHP form with one input and a button. A jQuery script ('loading' animated gif) is triggered on the click of the submit button. I also have a Spry Validation field linked to the input. At the moment, if the validation is triggered, the animated gif continues and won't stop. Authentication in our web application is based username / password credentials, what mechanisms are available for the admin to proxy as 'user2' when he doesn't have the password for 'user2'. How can the application track such access for audit purposes to mention that 'admin' had proxied for 'user2' and performed certain actions. I am looking for suggestions on supporting this in our j2ee (jboss seam) web application.

Here is the code: var image_url = "http://www.kottke.org/plus/misc/images/castro-pitching.jpg"; var $image = $('<img src="'+image_url+'" width="50" height="50" />'); $('body').prepend($image); Notice that the image http://www.kottke.org/plus/misc/images/castro-pitching.jpg is actually a 302 redirect to http://kottkegae.appspot.com/images/castro-pitching.jpg. If you were to go to the original image in your browser, it works fine. If you were to load an HTML page with that image in an img tag, it would load fine. However, if you were to insert it dynamically using jQuery (or JavaScript, for that matter), the browser will not show the 302'ed image.     How do I get Wix to include a CustomTable with no rows in the final MSI? If I simply define the table like this <CustomTable Id="MyTable"> <Column Id="Id" Type="string" Category="Identifier" PrimaryKey="yes"/> <Column Id="Root" Type="string"/> <Column Id="Key" Type="string"/> <Column Id="Name" Type="string"/> </CustomTable> Wix omits it from the final output. My CustomAction is expecting it to be there, so that it can add rows to it during execution. Any ideas?

I know this can be achieved both in native code and using the SpeechLib interop, but I prefer to use the managed library. Update: What I want to achieve, is not having to load an entire grammar repeatedly because of individual changes. For small grammars I got good results by calling _recognition.RequestRecognizerUpdate() and then doing the unload of the old grammar and loading of a rebuilt grammar in the event: void Recognition_RecognizerUpdateReached(object sender, RecognizerUpdateReachedEventArgs e) For large grammars this becomes too expensive.

    Hi, I'm using ActiveRecord in Ruby on Rails. I have a table named documents(Document class) and I want to have another table data_documents(DataDocument) class which is effectively the same except for having different table name. In other words, I want two tables with the same behavior except for table name. class DataDocument < Document #set_table_name "data_documents" self.table_name = "data_documents" end My solution was to use class inheritance as above, yet this resulted in inconsistent SQL statement for create operation where there are both 'documents' table and 'data_documents' table.
