  I use the word Hero to describe my friend, who wrote a word processor program that did not use a keyboard. This program was used by a 34-year woman who previously was unable to communicate. The first thing she wrote after she learned how to use it was "Nicole loves Mum". • Converting NUnit tests to MSUnit.

  I created the MSTest project by creating a new class library project and copying the test classes to it. • XHTML fix solution republished

  As a post VS2010 SP1 installation activity, I am recompiling all my open source projects. The first is XHTMLFIX at http://xhtmlfix.codeplex.com/ This LGPL project has simple fixes to ASP.NET 2.0/4.0 to achieve XHTML compliance as measured by the W3C tests at http://validator.w3.org/ The XHTML project shows as untrue the commonly held belief that MVP or MVC are necessary for producing XHTML compliant web pages. Incidentally the other supposed advantage of MVP and MVC over web forms of easier testing is also very dubious as web forms can be tested by systems such as Selenium or WaTiN. I have used NUnitASP (alas sadly discontinued) with web forms and found it be more effective than unit testing MVP. Now if you prefer the MVP and / or MVC approach over Web forms then fine, that is your preferance. Now if you can find an example where ASP.NET 4.0 Web forms properly written do not produce XHTML compliant markup, I would be glad of your example and will look at ways of modifying the markup to be XHTML compliant.

  Style Cop 4.4.0 is now out. This is a free download from http://stylecop.codeplex.com/ (please note the new location). This version is for VS2010. If you are usign an older version of Visual Studio you be prepared to keep to an older release like 4.3.0. The more I use StyleCop the more I like it. Code that is style cop compliant is much easier to pick up. It helps if you have GhostDoc (free) and Resharper (from jetBrains.Com)

• Help file formats - MSHA files v CHM files

  Recently I was tasked with producing a help file from a C#/WPF/Crystal Reports application using Sandcastle. I have previously blogged about the problems in doing that and the change that is going into the next version of Sandcastle that allows the vagaries of Crystal (this missing BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) to be handled. At http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/devdocs/thread/0b110502-f5bb-4c56-96a5-4347a2a7a68a/, I describe how I tried each of the formats. Two of the formats could not be built and the error messages were not exactly helpful as to the cause. These two formats turned out to be obsolete. The MSHA format worked but was not suitable for a standalone application, so that left me with the older CHM format. I therefore asked on that thread "will the HTML Help 1 (CHM) format continue to be supported for the foreseeable future?".Rob Chandler, MVP in help systems, gave a very helpful answer, to the effect that there is not yet a replacement for the CHM format.

The kepler space telescope is continuously monitoring a small patch of the sky for transits.Here are some of the more interesting (and eye-catching pictures). Remember so far the best image of an extra-solar planets has been a diffraction blur, but even just as artist's impressions based upon the best current evidence, they are very impressive.   Apress Books Introducing Visual C# 2010 - ISBN 978-1-4302-3171-4 Having read through parts 1 and 2 of this 4 -part book, I am very impressed by its practical approach to C#. I cannot improve on the by-line "Get started on your C# journey with an expert by your side leading by example" Adam Freeman teaches C# by precept and example. I suspect he drives a Volvo C30 as it comes up in many of the code examples!  Throughout the book there are numerous links back and forth so as to avoid overcomplicating the current topic. I have have no hesitation in recommending this book both to programmers starting out with C# and to the seasoned professional. It is a book that should be on every C# development team's book shelf. There are a few typographical errors in the book, one of which has already made it to the errata, however these are very minor and do not detract from the usefulness of this book.

• Fiddler - A useful free tool for checking Web Services (and web site) traffic

  Recently I had reason to be very glad that I had Fiddler. I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry! This tool is also useful for studying general web site traffic. Fiddler is available from http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/ There are training videos available on the above site.

Read the article but also remember that the account the application uses to access the database adhere to the following points:NEVER EVER use the sa account even in development.Route access via a role on the database.The account should have the minimum privilege required for the job.The account should have no access whatsoever to any other database not required by the application.If you can avoid mixed mode authentication do so and grant access via to a windows group to which you add users.

  A few days ago I was browsing a particular commerical web site, the site crashed and I encountered the "White Screen of Death". The detailed dump showed me what the site was using:zendMySqlPHPMageMagentoBesides all this detailed information of use to a hacker, the copyright on Magento cited a date of 2009.  Does this means that out of date software was in use?There is a more basic point - in your site please ensure that fatal errors are trapped and redirected to a page that gives away no information useful to a hacker. I suggest also that you provide a means for an administrator to simulate an error to check the error handling.
