  • Apress Books - 4 - Introducing Visual C# 2010 - Further comments

    - by TATWORTH
Apress Books Introducing Visual C# 2010 - ISBN 978-1-4302-3171-4 Having read through parts 1 and 2 of this 4 -part book, I am very impressed by its practical approach to C#. I cannot improve on the by-line "Get started on your C# journey with an expert by your side leading by example" Adam Freeman teaches C# by precept and example. I suspect he drives a Volvo C30 as it comes up in many of the code examples!  Throughout the book there are numerous links back and forth so as to avoid overcomplicating the current topic. I have have no hesitation in recommending this book both to programmers starting out with C# and to the seasoned professional. It is a book that should be on every C# development team's book shelf. There are a few typographical errors in the book, one of which has already made it to the errata, however these are very minor and do not detract from the usefulness of this book.

Download is at http://www.jetbrains.com/resharper/whatsnew/index.html The release notes are at http://blogs.jetbrains.com/dotnet/2011/02/resharper-513-is-released/ Whilst 5.1.3 addresses just a specific issue, if you are programming in C# or VB.NET and if you have never tried Resharper before, you should try it. When I first saw ReSharper in use, within a few minutes I knew that it was worthwhile buying my own copy. Since then I have used it at client site after client site and found it to be a very useful tool.

  • Sandcastle Help File Builder - October 2010 release

    - by TATWORTH
At http://shfb.codeplex.com/releases/view/92191, the latest Sandcastle has been released. I am pleased to say that it incorporates the generic version of a fix, I originated that allows projects including Crystal Reports to be documented. Here is the relevant passage from the help file:"The default configuration for MRefBuilder has been updated to ignore the Crystal Reports licensing assembly (BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) if it fails to get resolved. This assembly does not appear to be available and ignoring it prevents projects that include Crystal Reports assemblies from failing and being unbuildable."There are many other fixes. Here are the release notes:IMPORTANT: On some systems, the content of the ZIP file is blocked and the installer may fail to run. Before extracting it, right click on the ZIP file, select Properties, and click on the Unblock button if it is present in the lower right corner of the General tab in the properties dialog. This release supports the Sandcastle October 2012 Release (v2.7.1.0). It includes full support for generating, installing, and removing MS Help Viewer files. This new release supports Visual Studio 2010 and 2012 solutions and projects as documentation sources, and adds support for projects targeting the .NET 4.5 Framework, .NET Portable Library 4.5, and .NET for Windows Store Apps.See the Sandcastle 2.7.1.0 Release Notes for details on all of the changes made to the underlying Sandcastle tools and presentation styles. This release uses the Sandcastle Guided Installation package. • Help file formats - MSHA files v CHM files

    - by TATWORTH
Recently I was tasked with producing a help file from a C#/WPF/Crystal Reports application using Sandcastle. I have previously blogged about the problems in doing that and the change that is going into the next version of Sandcastle that allows the vagaries of Crystal (this missing BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) to be handled. At http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/devdocs/thread/0b110502-f5bb-4c56-96a5-4347a2a7a68a/, I describe how I tried each of the formats. Two of the formats could not be built and the error messages were not exactly helpful as to the cause. These two formats turned out to be obsolete. The MSHA format worked but was not suitable for a standalone application, so that left me with the older CHM format. I therefore asked on that thread "will the HTML Help 1 (CHM) format continue to be supported for the foreseeable future?".Rob Chandler, MVP in help systems, gave a very helpful answer, to the effect that there is not yet a replacement for the CHM format.

  • The White Screen of Death

    - by TATWORTH
A few days ago I was browsing a particular commerical web site, the site crashed and I encountered the "White Screen of Death". The detailed dump showed me what the site was using:zendMySqlPHPMageMagentoBesides all this detailed information of use to a hacker, the copyright on Magento cited a date of 2009.  Does this means that out of date software was in use? There is a more basic point - in your site please ensure that fatal errors are trapped and redirected to a page that gives away no information useful to a hacker. I suggest also that you provide a means for an administrator to simulate an error to check the error handling.

  • JSIL - a Dot Net to JavaScript translator

    - by TATWORTH
JSI is described at http://jsil.org/ as:"JSIL is a compiler that transforms .NET applications and libraries from their native executable format - CIL bytecode - into standards-compliant, cross-browser JavaScript. You can take this JavaScript and run it in a web browser or any other modern JavaScript runtime. Unlike other cross-compiler tools targeting JavaScript, JSIL produces readable, easy-to-debug JavaScript that resembles the code a developer might write by hand, while still maintaining the behavior and structure of the original .NET code. Because JSIL transforms bytecode, it can support most .NET-based languages - C# to JavaScript and VB.NET to JavaScript work right out of the box."
