  • count(*) vs count(column-name) - which is more correct?

    - by bread
    Does it make a difference if you do count(*) vs count(column-name) as in these two examples? I have a tendency to always write count(*) because it seems to fit better in my mind with the notion of it being an aggregate function, if that makes sense. But I'm not sure if it's technically best as I tend to see example code written without the * more often than not. count(*): select customerid, count(*), sum(price) from items_ordered group by customerid having count(*) > 1; vs. count(column-name): SELECT customerid, count(customerid), sum(price) FROM items_ordered GROUP BY customerid HAVING count(customerid) > 1;

  • When running UPDATE ... datetime = NOW(); will all rows updated have the same date/time?

    - by Darryl Hein
When you run something similar to: UPDATE table SET datetime = NOW(); on a table with 1 000 000 000 records and the query takes 10 seconds to run, will all the rows have the exact same time (minutes and seconds) or will they have different times? In other words, will the time be when the query started or when each row is updated? I'm running MySQL, but I'm thinking this applies to all dbs.

  • Postgres: Find table foreign keys (Faster alternative)

    - by Najera
Is there faster alternative to this: Take almost 1 minute in our server. SELECT tc.constraint_name, tc.table_name, kcu.column_name, ccu.table_name AS foreign_table_name, ccu.column_name AS foreign_column_name FROM information_schema.table_constraints AS tc JOIN information_schema.key_column_usage AS kcu ON tc.constraint_name = kcu.constraint_name JOIN information_schema.constraint_column_usage AS ccu ON ccu.constraint_name = tc.constraint_name WHERE constraint_type = 'FOREIGN KEY' AND tc.table_name='mytable'; Maybe using pg_class metadata?, thanks.

  • Select where a value present

    - by Roy
First a database example: id, product_id, cat, name, value -------------------------------- 1,1,Algemeen,Processor,2 Ghz 2,1,Algemeen,Geheugen,4 GB 3,2,Algemeen,Processor,3 Ghz 4,2,Algemeen,Geheugen,4 GB 5,3,Beeldscherm,Inch,22" 6,3,Beeldscherm,Kleur,Zwart 7,3,Algemeen,Geheugen,3 GB 8,3,Algemeen,Processor,3 Ghz I want with one query to select the follow id's: 1,2,3,4,7,8 Because the cat = algemeen and the name = processor by these products. ID 5,6 are only present by product 3. So, the entry's (cat and name) which are present by all products (product_id) have to be selected. The database contains 80.000 entry's with a lot of diffrent cat's, name's and value's. Is this possible with one query or is some php necessary? How do I do this? My apologies for the bad English.

  • XML Import how would you do it?

    - by Rico
XML is used as one of our main integration points. it comes over by many clients at a time but too many clients importing at the same time can slow down our database to a crawl. Someone has to have solved a problem like this. I am basically using VB to parse through the data and import what i want and don't want. Is there a better way?

  • Left outer joins that don't return all the rows from T1

    - by Summer
Left outer joins should return at least one row from the T1 table if it matches the conditions. But what if the left outer join performs a join successfully, then finds that another criterion is not satisfied? Is there a way to get the query to return a row with T1 values and T2 values set to NULL? Here's the specific query, in which I'm trying to return a list of candidates, and the user's support for those candidates IF such support exists. SELECT c.id, c.name, s.support FROM candidates c LEFT JOIN support s on s.candidate_id = c.id WHERE c.office_id = 5059 AND c.election_id = 92 AND (s.user_id = 2 OR s.user_id IS NULL) --This line seems like the problem ORDER BY c.last_name, c.name The query joins the candidates and support table, but finds that it's a different user who supported this candidate (user_id=3, say). Then the candidate disappears entirely from the result set.

  • Two references to the same domain/entity model

    - by Sbossb
    Problem I want to save the attributes of a model that have changed when a user edits them. Here's what I want to do ... Retrieve edited view model Get domain model and map back updated value Call the update method on repository Get the "old" domain model and compare values of the fields Store the changed values (in JSON) into a table However I am having trouble with step number 4. It seems that the Entity Framework doesn't want to hit the database again to get the model with the old values. It just returns the same entity I have. Attempted Solutions I have tried using the Find() and the SingleOrDefault() methods, but they just return the model I currently have. Example Code private string ArchiveChanges(T updatedEntity) { //Here is the problem! //oldEntity is the same as updatedEntity T oldEntity = DbSet.SingleOrDefault(x => x.ID == updatedEntity.ID); Dictionary<string, object> changed = new Dictionary<string, object>(); foreach (var propertyInfo in typeof(T).GetProperties()) { var property = typeof(T).GetProperty(propertyInfo.Name); //Get the old value and the new value from the models var newValue = property.GetValue(updatedEntity, null); var oldValue = property.GetValue(oldEntity, null); //Check to see if the values are equal if (!object.Equals(newValue, oldValue)) { //Values have changed ... log it changed.Add(propertyInfo.Name, newValue); } } var ser = new System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer(); return ser.Serialize(changed); } public override void Update(T entityToUpdate) { //Do something with this string json = ArchiveChanges(entityToUpdate); entityToUpdate.AuditInfo.Updated = DateTime.Now; entityToUpdate.AuditInfo.UpdatedBy = Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name; base.Update(entityToUpdate); }

  • SqlCeCommand ExecuteNonQuery performance issue

    - by Michael
I've been asked to resolve an issue with a .Net/SqlServerCe application. Specifically, after repeated inserts against the db, performance becomes increasingly degraded. In one instance at ~200 rows, in another at ~1000 rows. In the latter case the code being used looks like this: Dim cm1 As System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand = cn1.CreateCommand cm1.CommandText = "INSERT INTO Table1 Values(?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?)" For j = 0 To ds.Tables(0).Rows.Count - 1 'this is 3110 For i = 0 To 12 cm1.Parameters(tbl(i, 0)).Value = Vals(j,i) 'values taken from a different db Next cm1.ExecuteNonQuery() Next The specifics aren't super important (like what 'tbl' is, etc) but rather whether or not this code should be expected to handle this number of inserts, or if the crawl I'm witnessing is to be expected.

  • Voting Script, Possiblity of Simplifying Database Queries

    - by Sev
I have a voting script which stores the post_id and the user_id in a table, to determine whether a particular user has already voted on a post and disallow them in the future. To do that, I am doing the following 3 queries. SELECT user_id, post_id from votes_table where postid=? AND user_id=? If that returns no rows, then: UPDATE post_table set votecount = votecount-1 where post_id = ? Then SELECT votecount from post where post_id=? To display the new votecount on the web page Any better way to do this? 3 queries are seriously slowing down the user's voting experience

  • Any way to make this PostgreSQL count query any faster?

    - by Ben Dauphinee
I'm running a case-insensitive search on a table with 7.2 million rows, and I was wondering if there was any way to make this query any faster? Currently, it takes approx 11.6 seconds to execute, with just one search parameter, and I'm worried that as soon as I add more than one, this query will become massively slow. SELECT count(*) FROM "exif_parse" WHERE (description ~* 'canon')

  • oracle call stored procedure inside select

    - by CC
Hi everybody. I'm working on a query (a SELECT) and I need to insert the result of this one in a table. Before doing the insert I have some checking to do, and if all columns are valid, I will do the insert. The checking is done in a stored procedure. The same procedure is used somewhere else too. So I'm thinking using the same procedure to do my checks. The procedure does the checkings and insert the values is all OK. I tryied to call the procedure inside my SELECT but it does not works. SELECT field1, field2, myproc(field1, field2) from MYTABLE. This kind of code does not works. I think it can be done using a cursor, but I would like to avoid the cursors. I'm looking for the easiest solution. Anybody, any idea ? Thanks alot. C.C.

  • iPhone SDK: Data Synchronization

    - by buzzappsoftware
I am looking for an overview of data synchronization techniques available on the iPhone platform. We need the ability to be able to sync a subset of content from a server to a local database residing on the iPhone. On other projects I have worked on, the data synchronization was handled by the database. Is that available in SQLite? If not, any suggestions on techniques? Rolling our own would not be my first choice. Thanks in advance.

  • Would you allow this type of query?

    - by user564577
I'm exploring using an ORM tool in our development shop, and in particular Entity Framework 4.0. Since we work with VERY large databases, I'm a bit concerned about the query's it generates. Doing something simple like getting clients with an address in a state looks like below. As a database developer or admin would you allow this? Is it as bad as it looks? Assume every join is on a clustered index. SELECT [Project2].[ClientKey] AS [ClientKey], [Project2].[FirstName] AS [FirstName], [Project2].[LastName] AS [LastName], [Project2].[IsEnabled] AS [IsEnabled], [Project2].[ChangeUser] AS [ChangeUser], [Project2].[ChangeDate] AS [ChangeDate], [Project2].[C1] AS [C1], [Project2].[AddressKey] AS [AddressKey], [Project2].[ClientKey1] AS [ClientKey1], [Project2].[AddressTypeCode] AS [AddressTypeCode], [Project2].[PrimaryAddress] AS [PrimaryAddress], [Project2].[AddressLine1] AS [AddressLine1], [Project2].[AddressLine2] AS [AddressLine2], [Project2].[City] AS [City], [Project2].[State] AS [State], [Project2].[ZIP] AS [ZIP] FROM ( SELECT [Distinct1].[ClientKey] AS [ClientKey], [Distinct1].[FirstName] AS [FirstName], [Distinct1].[LastName] AS [LastName], [Distinct1].[IsEnabled] AS [IsEnabled], [Distinct1].[ChangeUser] AS [ChangeUser], [Distinct1].[ChangeDate] AS [ChangeDate], [Extent3].[AddressKey] AS [AddressKey], [Extent3].[ClientKey] AS [ClientKey1], [Extent3].[AddressTypeCode] AS [AddressTypeCode], [Extent3].[PrimaryAddress] AS [PrimaryAddress], [Extent3].[AddressLine1] AS [AddressLine1], [Extent3].[AddressLine2] AS [AddressLine2], [Extent3].[City] AS [City], [Extent3].[State] AS [State], [Extent3].[ZIP] AS [ZIP], CASE WHEN ([Extent3].[AddressKey] IS NULL) THEN CAST(NULL AS int) ELSE 1 END AS [C1] FROM (SELECT DISTINCT [Extent1].[ClientKey] AS [ClientKey], [Extent1].[FirstName] AS [FirstName], [Extent1].[LastName] AS [LastName], [Extent1].[IsEnabled] AS [IsEnabled], [Extent1].[ChangeUser] AS [ChangeUser], [Extent1].[ChangeDate] AS [ChangeDate] FROM [Common].[Clients] AS [Extent1] INNER JOIN [Common].[ClientAddresses] AS [Extent2] ON [Extent1].[ClientKey] = [Extent2].[ClientKey] WHERE (( CAST(CHARINDEX(UPPER('D'), UPPER([Extent1].[LastName])) AS int)) > 0) AND ([Extent1].[IsEnabled] = 1) AND ([Extent2].[City] IS NOT NULL) AND ((UPPER([Extent2].[City])) = (UPPER('Colorado Springs'))) ) AS [Distinct1] LEFT OUTER JOIN [Common].[ClientAddresses] AS [Extent3] ON [Distinct1].[ClientKey] = [Extent3].[ClientKey] ) AS [Project2] ORDER BY [Project2].[ClientKey] ASC, [Project2].[FirstName] ASC, [Project2].[LastName] ASC, [Project2].[IsEnabled] ASC, [Project2].[ChangeUser] ASC, [Project2].[ChangeDate] ASC, [Project2].[C1] ASC

  • check if sqlserver is installed on a machine thro C#

    - by Skun
Hey ! I am making an application which is a user interface to access 2 types of databases - SQLite and MSSQL server. The thing is, SQLite doesnt need to be "installed" since its just a flatfile database, but on the other hand, SQLserver (Express/normal) need to be installed before use. My Question is simple: Is there a way by which i can find out if an instance of SQLserver has been installed on the local machine by using a C# program?

  • How can I find all records for a model without doing a long list of "OR" conditions?

    - by gomezuk
I'm having trouble composing a CakePHP find() which returns the records I'm looking for. My associations go like this: User -(has many)- Friends , User -(has many)- Posts I'm trying to display a list of all a user's friends recent posts, in other words, list every post that was created by a friend of the current user logged in. The only way I can think of doing this is by putting all the user's friends' user_ids in a big array, and then looping through each one, so that the find() call would look something like: $posts = $this->Post->find('all',array( 'conditions' => array( 'Post.user_id' => array( 'OR' => array( $user_id_array[0],$user_id_array[1],$user_id_array[2] # .. etc ) ) ) )); I get the impression this isn't the best way of doing things as if that user is popular that's a lot of OR conditions. Can anyone suggest a better alternative?

  • SQL Server Reporting Services using of pictures with dynamic links

    - by YvesR
I have setup a SSRS 2008 and building reports. So far so good. Now there is a picture control in SSRS where you can set the picture as external link reference. There you can choose to use a link. When I use a weblink (http://anyurl/download_picture.aspx?id=123) it dont' work for me. Calling the url in the web browser (all tested IE, Safari, Chrome, FF) the pictures is delivered, Header is ok, content type, too. Does it work in general in SSRS ? Or do I have to copy the picture to a temp folder and link the url like http://anyurl/mypicture.jpg.
