• Send Ctrl+Alt+Del over VNC with Vista and UAC off?

  I'm trying to set up a machine here with Ultra VNC on Vista with UAC off. Problem is, in this configuration, I can't send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the Vista machine and so I'm stuck at the login screen, which is waiting for the CAD sequence. I'm joined to a domain, so I don't think I can disable the CAD requirement. I can't re-enable UAC either. I also tried using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to work. Any workaround or solution?

• Fn key sticks down

  Just bought my significant other a shiny new Samsung Q330 13" netbook, stuck an OCZ Agility in it and installed Maverick. Just as a quick aside, this is a devastating combination. Graphics work perfectly and it cold-boots to desktop in about 7 seconds. Very quick. But (common to laptops) I've got a couple of problems. I'll start with the most problematic and start a new thread for the other. Like a lot of laptops, there is a Fn (function) modifier to allow some keys to have another purpose. When I tried to alter the brightness of the screen by tapping Fn+Down, it worked but kept on going until it was as dim as it could go. I tapped Fn+Up and it went to the other extreme. After that the entire keyboard ceases to work properly because the Fn modifier appears to be locked. Additionally, and as a direct side effect, I think, clicking on things doesn't result in a standard result. It's as if control is being held. A reboot is the only thing that seems to fix these problems. This isn't a problem if you don't touch the Fn key but as there are two of them on the keyboard, an accident is going to happen sooner than later, requiring a reboot (and probably some data loss). I don't have a lot of experience with laptops (I prefer my hulking great desktop) so this isn't my area of expertise. I'm open to all suggestions, even disabling the two Fn keys until we can find a better solution.

• Law of Demeter confusion [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Rails: Law of Demeter Confusion 4 answers I am reading a book called Rails AntiPatterns and they talk about using delegation to to avoid breaking the Law of Demeter. Here is their prime example: They believe that calling something like this in the controller is bad (and I agree) @street = @invoice.customer.address.street Their proposed solution is to do the following: class Customer has_one :address belongs_to :invoice def street address.street end end class Invoice has_one :customer def customer_street customer.street end end @street = @invoice.customer_street They are stating that since you only use one dot, you are not breaking the Law of Demeter here. I think this is incorrect, because you are still going through customer to go through address to get the invoice's street. I primarily got this idea from a blog post I read: http://www.dan-manges.com/blog/37 In the blog post the prime example is class Wallet attr_accessor :cash end class Customer has_one :wallet # attribute delegation def cash @wallet.cash end end class Paperboy def collect_money(customer, due_amount) if customer.cash < due_ammount raise InsufficientFundsError else customer.cash -= due_amount @collected_amount += due_amount end end end The blog post states that although there is only one dot customer.cash instead of customer.wallet.cash, this code still violates the Law of Demeter. Now in the Paperboy collect_money method, we don't have two dots, we just have one in "customer.cash". Has this delegation solved our problem? Not at all. If we look at the behavior, a paperboy is still reaching directly into a customer's wallet to get cash out. Can somebody help me clear the confusion. I have been searching for the past 2 days trying to let this topic sink in, but it is still confusing.

  I have a network application that needs to send messages at 60 times a second. The messages are usually 300-400 bytes, but can be as large as 1500. The default setting for SO_SNDBUF is too small and limits the number of message that can be sent if the network latency is anything greater then 100ms. The naive solution is to just bump the SO_SNDBUF size to to something large. However, depending on the latency and the packet size that could be anywhere from 64K to 8MB. One of Vista's new features is TCP autotuning. Autotuning monitors the tcp connection and dynamically adjust the buffer sizes to allow for optimal communication. I would like to use auto tuning on our windows xp machine so I don't need to guess what my buffers sizes should be. Is there a way to install either a microsoft or 3rd party tcp autotuner on windows xp?

  For a prospective client we have to offer a solution to provide following system: CMS Order Management Shopping Cart CRM Helpdesk Accounting & Finance Custom Functions In order to save time and to avoid reinvent the wheel our idea is to integrate different off-the-shelf solutions. Their first requirement is that the system has to be hosted in their country which I think will exclude application like Aplicor, Netsuite & Salesforce. Basically the nucleaus would be the CMS which would integrate all the other apps. PHP or .Net based solutions would be our preferences as have inhouse expertise. So far following are few combinations I have come up with: Joomla (CMS) + Virtuemart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + OTRS Magento (CMS+Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Helpdesk Ultimate Drupal (CMS) + Ubercart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Support Ticketing System Sharepoint (CMS) + OptimusBt (Cart+Ordering) + Dynamics CRM + Great Plains + SharepointHQ Dotnetnuke (CMS) + DNNSpot (Cart+Ordering) + Sigma Pro (CRM+Helpdesk) + Open ERP For Helpdesk I liked Zendesk but the server location was the stopping factor, similar for finance and CRM I liked Aplicor. I would not like to go into detailed requirements as it would make things very complex. Could you please suggest me which options are worth enough to start looking into? What other options we have?

• Collision planes confusion

  I'm following this tutorial by thecplusplusguy and in the linked video he explain that for example for the world basement and walls we need to create the actual rendered (shown to the player) walls and then duplicate them, place them in the same coordinates as the rendered walls and call them collision (by defining their material to collision). Then it defines in the Object loader function that those objects with material == collision are collision planes and should not be rendered but just used to check collision. Now I'm pretty confused. Why would we add this kind of complexity to a problem that can easily be solved by a simple loadObject(string plane_object, bool check_collision);: Creating only the walls object (by loading .obj file in plane_object) Define them also as collision planes whenever the check_collision is set to true In this case we have lowered the complexity of his method and make it more flexible and faster to develop (faster because we don't always have to make a copy for each plane and flexible because we don't hardcode the Object loader). The only case in which this method could not work is when we need hidden collision planes, and for that we could modify the loadObject() function like this: loadObject(string plane_object, bool check_collision = true, bool hide_object = false); Creating only the walls object (by loading .obj file in plane_object) Define them also as collision planes whenever the check_collision is set to true And add the ability to actually show the object or hide it based on hide_object. The final question is: am I right? What would the possible problem encountered with my solution versus his?

• Disallow robots.txt from being accessed in a browser but still accessible by spiders?

  We make use of the robots.txt file to prevent Google (and other search spiders) from crawling certain pages/directories in our domain. Some of these directories/files are secret, meaning they aren't linked (except perhaps on other pages encompassed by the robots.txt file). Some of these directories/files aren't secret, we just don't want them indexed. If somebody browses directly to www.mydomain.com/robots.txt, they can see the contents of the robots.txt file. From a security standpoint, this is not something we want publicly available to anybody. Any directories that contain secure information are set behind authentication, but we still don't want them to be discoverable unless the user specifically knows about them. Is there a way to provide a robots.txt file but to have it's presence masked by John Doe accessing it from his browser? Perhaps by using PHP to generate the document based on certain criteria? Perhaps something I'm not thinking of? We'd prefer a way to centrally do it (meaning a <meta> tag solution is less than ideal).

• Choosing open source vs. proprietary CMS

  Hi- I've been tasked with redesigning a website for a small academic library. While only in charge of the site for 6 months, we've been maintaining static html pages edited in Dreamweaver for years. Last count of our total pages is around 400. Our university is going with an enterprise level solution called Sitefinity, although we maintain our own domain and are responsible to maintain our own presense. Some background-my library has a couple Microsoft IIS servers on which this static html site has been running. I'm advocating for the implementation of a CMS while doing this redesign. The problem is I'm basically the lone webmaster so I have no one to agree or disagree with my choice. There are also only 1-2 content editors right know for the site but a CMS could change that factor. I would like to use the functionality of having servers that run .NET and MS SQL but am more experience setting up and maintaining open source software like Wordpress or Drupal on web hosts. My main concern is choosing a CMS that will be easy to update / maintain / deal with upgrades (i.e., support) in case I'm not there in the future. So I'm wondering how to factor in the open source CMS vs. a relatively inexpensive commercial CMS decision and whether choosing PHP/MySQL vs. ASP.net framework for development environment will play into my decision. • How to implement child-parent aggregation link in C++?

  Suppose that I have three classes P, C1, C2, composition (strong aggregation) relations between P <>- C1 and P <>- C2, i.e. every instance of P contains an instance of C1 and an instance of C2, which are destroyed when the parent P instance is destroyed. an association relation between instances of C1 and C2 (not necessarily between children of the same P). To implement this, in C++ I normally define three classes P, C1, C2, define two member variables of P of type boost::shared_ptr<C1>, boost::shared_ptr<C2>, and initialize them with newly created objects in P's constructor, implement the relation between C1 and C2 using a boost::weak_ptr<C2> member variable in C1 and a boost::weak_ptr<C1> member variable in C2 that can be set later via appropriate methods, when the relation is established. Now, I also would like to have a link from each C1 and C2 object to its P parent object. What is a good way to implement this? My current idea is to use a simple constant raw pointer (P * const) that is set from the constructor of P (which, in turn, calls the constructors of C1 and C2), i.e. something like: class C1 { public: C1(P * const p, ...) : paren(p) { ... } private: P * const parent; ... }; class P { public: P(...) : childC1(new C1(this, ...)) ... { ... } private: boost::shared_ptr<C1> childC1; ... }; Honestly I see no risk in using a private constant raw pointer in this way but I know that raw pointers are often frowned upon in C++ so I was wondering if there is an alternative solution.

• HP Cue-Scanning Flow component freezes

  I am trying to scan with an HP network scanner (actually E6500 all-in-one). Whenever I try to scan, it starts up a flash screen with HP Scanning written all over it, which proceeds to do nothing. Digging in, I found that the process that gets stuck is hpqkygrp.exe, aka "HP CUE-Scanning Flow Component". This happened when I tried scanning from onenote or from the HP Solution Center. However, it seems that scanning from Windows' Fax and Scan utility works fine. As a (probably related) side-note, scanning directly from the scanner (using the buttons on its panel) doesn't work either. How can I keep this process from getting stuck?

• How to store 250TB of data and develop a backup/recovery plan?

  I'm really new to this topic, so big apology for stupid questions. I have a school project and I want to know how to store 250TB of data with life-cycle for 18 months. It means every record is stored for 18 months and after this period of time can be deleted. There are 2 issues: store data backup data Due to amount of data I will probably need to combine data tapes and hard drives. I'd like to have "fast" access to 3 month old data, so ~42TB on disk. I really don't know what RAID should I use, or is here any better solution than combining disk and data tapes? Thanks for any advice, article, anything. I'm getting lost.

• Can you run a specific tomcat Web Application under another user?

  Hi, We're developing a web-app running under tomcat which relies on Java User preferences to store all kind of settings. That works great, but we've run into problem where we needed to set up another staging web-app which allows you to test settings before settings them live. The core of the problem lies in the fact that Java User preferences are the same for all web-app due to the fact that all of them run under the tomcat user (configurable). For legacy reasons I can not at the moment change my preferences structure, so I'm hoping for a solution on the the tomcat configuration side. • Capturing a firewire video feed in Leopard on a G4

  Hi, I have a powerbook G4 that I loaded up with Leopard (OSX 10.5). I don't have iMovie, since the Leopard version requires an intel mac. I have a Sony Digital 8 Camcorder with firewire and usb output. The usb output requires a special driver on windows. I don't think OSX will support it. I wish to capture the video stream from the camera on my G4. VLC does not support firewire capture on OSX, I don't want to pay for QT professional. I'm looking for a solution. I'd prefer open source, but I'd consider freeware and inexpensive for pay options. On a related note, if it can capture still frames, I have a related question.

• Native AAA games coming to Ubuntu. Where they will be installed?

  Many users use SSD disks (and I believe many more in the future) for their OS. 128GB SSD disks are common place nowadays and many users (like me) use their SSD for dual booting (Windows and Ubuntu). Ubuntu installations like this occupies 20-40 GB (/ , /home and swap). Up to now there was no problem. In a few weeks though, triple A games are coming to Ubuntu (i.e. l4d2) that require probably tens of GB for installation. In windows there is no problem, because you can install a game anywhere you want (i.e. I install games in D:/Games/). In Ubuntu, though, programs install files in many places (i.e. /usr/* , /lib, /etc ) so from what I remember, I never had the option to choose where to install a program. So, how will it be possible to install AAA games that require many GBs, when our Ubuntu installations won't have the necessary space? Could a /opt mounted on a mechanical disk (HDD) be the solution? Is it something I am missing?

  Background Using LaTeX to write a book. When a user purchases the book, the PDF will be generated automatically. Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, undetectable watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution). • Can too much abstraction be bad?

  As programmers I feel that our goal is to provide good abstractions on the given domain model and business logic. But where should this abstraction stop? How to make the trade-off between abstraction and all it's benefits (flexibility, ease of changing etc.) and ease of understanding the code and all it's benefits. I believe I tend to write code overly abstracted and I don't know how good is it; I often tend to write it like it is some kind of a micro-framework, which consists of two parts: Micro-Modules which are hooked up in the micro-framework: these modules are easy to be understood, developed and maintained as single units. This code basically represents the code that actually does the functional stuff, described in requirements. Connecting code; now here I believe stands the problem. This code tends to be complicated because it is sometimes very abstracted and is hard to be understood at the beginning; this arises due to the fact that it is only pure abstraction, the base in reality and business logic being performed in the code presented 1; from this reason this code is not expected to be changed once tested. Is this a good approach at programming? That it, having changing code very fragmented in many modules and very easy to be understood and non-changing code very complex from the abstraction POV? Should all the code be uniformly complex (that is code 1 more complex and interlinked and code 2 more simple) so that anybody looking through it can understand it in a reasonable amount of time but change is expensive or the solution presented above is good, where "changing code" is very easy to be understood, debugged, changed and "linking code" is kind of difficult. Note: this is not about code readability! Both code at 1 and 2 is readable, but code at 2 comes with more complex abstractions while code 1 comes with simple abstractions.

The IP address is required to be stored a character data in the table. To define size of the character column you need to know maximum length of IP address. So, what is the maximum length of an IP address? Solution The IPv4 version of IP address is in the following format 255.255.255.255 To store IPv4 address we require 15 characters. The IPv6 version of IP address is grouped into sets of 4 hex digits separated by colons, like the below 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 To store IPv6 address you require a 39 characters long column. Conclusion As IPv4 and IPv6 are the commonly use protocols, you better define a column with 39 characters length so that both the format address are saved in to the table without any issues. This completes the 4 1/2 year journey Solidsoft started on this cross government project with the addition of full electronic distribution of data and the most import piece – access for the citizen to use the service on-line. Tell Us Once (TUO) is the award-winning, cross-government programme that lets people inform central government and local authorities just once of a birth or death. In service in over 95% of councils in England, Scotland and Wales, it provides a permanent solution to the long-standing and frustrating issue of people having to notify the government multiple times. Several years ago, research showed that people had to make up to 44 contacts when reporting a death to government bodies and their local authority. The TUO service is offered as a face-to-face interview by the local authority or by telephone to a dedicated telephony service run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). and a  now a TUO online service for death. From the bereavement section of the  Direct Gov web site the citizen is able to ‘enrich’ the standard death registration data to allow the ‘Tell Us Once’ system inform the various government departments about the death. These include the local council, DVLA, DWP, Passport service and HMRC. For the record this is an excellent example of how an SME working with a large SI partner can deliver success for government in a responsive and agile manner. For me personally it is a proud moment in which a vision I started with a very small team was followed through, extended and finally delivered by an excellent team at Solidsoft.

• Add a hook to run when NetworkManager connects

  What would be a good way to make a script run every time my computer connects to the network in Ubuntu? Would I somehow use dbus to do this? Background: when I'm on the train I run a short Perl script to click a button on the splash page. That way I can immediately use the internet without having to manually visit a pointless website. My script is a near-perfect solution, but it would be perfect if it could run automatically any time I connect to the network.

• Make browsing safe for porn surfers

  At several places I've done some work at, I have a suspicion that some of the executives browse porn on their work computers. It appears this porn surfing has lead to virus infections on their computers despite the presence of an anti-virus. Filtering theses specific users' browsing is not an option, so what would be my next best solution be? I put Firefox + Adblock pro on their computers. I'm tempted to add NoScript, but I'm worried they'll start calling when noscript interferes with browsing on legit websites. Is there anything else I can due to mitigate this risk?

• Touchpad stopped working on an Acer AspireOne D255E

  I have a less than a year old Acer AspireOne D255E with a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Everything has been working fine. Great OS and great netbook. But today the touchpad stopped working. It had been working fine. I closed the netbook and when I opened it again, a couple of hours later, I could not move the pointer with the touchpad. I can not get the pointer to move. I cleaned the touchpad surface well, just in case. Everything else is working fine. All the software updates are up-to-date. I have rebooted several times with no solution. I have attached an USB mouse and the pointer works well. What can I do to troubleshoot the problem? I have gone to the System Settings, touchpad section, and there is not much that I can do there. I would like to determine first if it is a hardware or software issue and then how to resolve it. Is there a way that I can reinstall the touchpad drivers. just in case it is a software problem? I have been using Ubuntu for nearly a year now and am very happy with it. Are there any wise Ubuntu gurus out there who can help me? Thank you for reading this note.

• Oracle ADF and Simplified UI Apps: I18n Feng Shui on Display

  I demoed the Hebrew language version of Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 live in Israel recently. The crowd was yet again wowed by the simplified UI (SUI). I’ve now spent some time playing around with most of the 23 language versions, or the NLS (Natural Language Support) versions as we’d call them, available in Release 8. Hebrew Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 The simplified UI is built using 100% Oracle ADF. This framework is a great solution for developers to productively build tablet-first, mobility-driven apps for users who work and live using natural languages other than English. Oracle ADF’s internationalization (i18n) relies on built-in Java and Unicode,  packing in i18n goodness such as Bi-Di (or bi-directional) flipping of pages, locale-enabled resource bundles, date and time support, and so on. Comparing German (left) and Hebrew Bi-Di (right) page components in the simplified UI. Note the change in the direction of the arrows and positions of the text. So, developers who need to build global apps don’t have to do anything special when using Oracle ADF components, all thanks to the baked-in UX Feng Shui, as Grant Ronald of the ADF team would say to the UK Oracle User Group.
