• Does fast typing influence fast programming?

  Many young programmers think that their bottleneck is typing speed. After some experience one realizes that it is not the case, you have to think much more than type. At some point my room-mate forced me to turn of the light (he sleeps during the night). I had to learn to touch type and I experienced an actual improvement in programming skill. The most surprising was that the improvement not due to sheer typing speed, but to a change in mindset. I'm less afraid now to try new things and refactor them later if they work well. It's like having a new tool in the bag. Have anyone of you had similar experience? Now I trained a touch typing a little with KTouch. I find auto-generate lessons the best. I can use this program to create new lessons out of text files but it's only verbatim training, not auto-generated based on a language model. Do you know any touch typing program that allows creation of custom, but randomized lessons?

• Pair programming with tmux and Vagrant

  Does anyone have a clear step-by-step guide for setting up a shared tmux session on a Vagrant vbox that my coworkers (on our local office lan) could SSH into? The articles I've found online only seem to cover setting this up from machine to machine (no virtualbox setups), and I'm not very good at networking, so I haven't been able to extrapolate a solution... We're all running the latest Macs in our office, btw. Here's one article I've found but haven't been able to get working with Vagrant: http://blog.voxdolo.me/remote-pairing-with-vim-and-tmux.html EDIT: To clarify, I don't really know how I should be setting up Vagrant to allow me to SSH into it from a machine outside the one hosting the VM. The article above suggests that I add the tunnels host on my physical machine running the VM (here-on referred to as the MBP), so I did that. Next is the ProxyCommand host declaration, which I have also assumed should live on the MBP. So next I try SSHing into the MBP from a guest machine (another separate physical machine on my network), and that seems to work... but that only gets me into the MBP, not the Vagrant image running on the MBP. I normally login Vagrant image on the MBP via vagrant ssh (per the docs), and I know how to forward ports on the Vagrant VM to the MBP, but it's unclear to me how I could forward ports/SSH from the MBP to the Vagrant VM, which I assume I would need to do so that my guest machine could SSH in--through the MBP--to my Vagrant image. That, in a nutshell, is what I'm trying to accomplish. I do my development work in Vagrant VMs which keeps my MBP nice and clean of any dev-related cruft and also keeps my dev environments totally isolated from one another, yet I would like to start pair-programming with my coworkers via tmux, thus the reason why I've asked this question. I would like to accomplish all of this without setting up an additional user account on the MBP, or giving my coworkers access to my local user account on the MBP to get to my Vagrant VM, if that's at all possible.

• Missing ideas in programming language design

  I wanted to try something new and so I designed some programming languages and wrote interpreters for them: A rather low-level, not very expressive language. (I didn't want to parse complex expressions right at the beginning) It featured: Variables (yay) Subroutines, with a call stack Basic arithmetic functions, basic string manipulation, ... Code in the language looks like this: set i 0 inc i print i Very, very basic you see. A more high-level language I decided to make it structured and so it featured things like if-else, while, functions, and so on. The stuff most programming languages have. Ended up like a unworthy Python clone, I hated that. A code-golf language Which ended up similar to J, golfcode, APL, etc. Nothing special As you can see: I don't lack the skills but the ideas. I can't figure out anything new, not even bad, unneccessary things, for my languages. - Do you know of some weird things I could implement in my languages, which don't try to make programming harder (like most esoteric languages) but funnier or more different from other languages? It can't be possible that every weird thing has been tried out so far, or?

• How to make a good programming interview?

  I am doing interviews with from time to time to recruit some not bad people. And I really think I AM NOT doing to correct Job. I work in a company when We have to do a lot o DB programming, .NET programming, Java programming, so we need people who are open minded and not focused on a particular tech. Afterall language is a notation, You have to understand what is going under the hood. I ask people about their project, ask them some coding questions (believe me a SQL question involving a CROSS JOIN is hard), let them write some code, ask them about oo design, ask them how they update their knowledge, and stay up to date, do they have FUN when they code (at least sometimes). Hell I even give them a coding solution for home (3 hours max) to see how they think and code. And yet my hit rate at hiring junior member (those who live over the initial 3 months) is just about 33%. So my question, how do YOU make the good interviews, because I think my hit rate is to low? Do you have any best-practices(should be at least 60-70%)? p.s. And i noticed that: the best programmers are lazy, but motivated, just being lazy is not enough:) But people who write the best code are attentive to details:)

• What are some programming techniques for converting SD images to HD images

  I'm taking programming class and instructor loves to work with images so most of our assignments involve manipulating raw RGB image data. One of our assignments is to implement a standard image converter that converts SD images to HD images and vice versa. I always take advantage of these types of assignments to go a little beyond what we were asked to do, so I added a basic anti-aliasing process that uses the average pixel color of the 3x3 surrounding pixels to improve the converted image. While it helps a bit, the resulting image still doesn't look good, which is ok because it's not expected to for the assignment. I've learned that converting an SD to HD images has shown to be much harder than down sampling to SD from HD just because SD to HD effectively involves increasing resolution when it is not there. Obviously, it is hard to create pixels from nothing, but I'd like enhance my anti-aliasing to something that provides better results when upscaling an image. Most of the techniques I find and read on the internet are far beyond my level of image processing and programming. Can anybody suggest any better methods or processes to create good HD content from SD content that may be within my programming skill level? I know that's a difficult thing to gauge since you don't know me, but perhaps knowing that I can write c++ code to read in raw RGB data and upscale/downscale it with simple average-anti-aliasing will give you an idea.   Hello guys, i guess that many of us has acceptable years of experience in PHP programming, me myself got 5 years programming in PHP since in University (not very solid), i just want to gather some suggestion here, what is better approach in PHP OOP? Since there is a lot of PHP framework out there as well as javascript framework, can anyone share their experience in using one of them as well as using both of the PHP and javascript framework together especially for developing enterprise system? (my company want to start using framework, ISP company) if someone has his/her own framework or class or php file so on and so forth, mind to share? now I've only database connection class. I've never use any php framework before, just jquery as javascript framework, my company has a messed up of programming approach because they did not actually a software house, so all the files are scattered across the server, I see that there are some question before about the framework but i just want to know you all approaches on OOP and in developing massive web apps using PHP, or maybe someone kind enough to share their solid written class.   I saw an example of using Expression Builders, and creating your own Custom Expression Builder Classes here: http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/022509-1.aspx However, I fail to see the value in using this approach. It doesn't seem much easier than programmatically setting values in your code behind. As far as I can tell, the only thing you can do with them is set properties. Maybe they would be useful for setting defaults on certain controls? Can anyone shed light on where this ASP.NET feature becomes powerful?

  I'm currently evaluating QtQuick (Qt User Interface Creation Kit) which will be released as part of Qt 4.7. QML is the JavaScript-based declarative language behind QtQuick. It seems to be a very powerful concept, but I'm wondering if anybody that's made extensive use of other, more mature declarative-UI languages like XAML in WPF or Silverlight can give any insight into the real-world benefits that can be gained from this style of programming. • Why Aren't Programs Written In Assembly More Often?

  It seems to be a mainstream opinion that assembly programming takes longer and is more difficult to program in than a higher level language such as C. Therefore it seems to be recommend or assumed that it is better to write in a higher level language for these reasons and for the reason of better portability. Recently I've been writing in x86 assembly and it has dawned on me that perhaps these reasons are not really true, except perhaps portability. Perhaps it is more of a matter of familiarity and knowing how to write assembly well. I also noticed that programming in assembly is quite different than programming in an HLL. Perhaps a good and experienced assembly programmer could write programs just as easily and as quickly as an experienced C programmer writing in C. Perhaps it is because assembly programming is quite different than HLLs, and so requires different thinking, methods and ways, which makes it seem very awkward to program in for the unfamiliar, and so gives it its bad name for writing programs in. If portability isn't an issue, then really, what would C have over a good assembler such as NASM?

  Hey all, I'm trying to add authorization to a rather large app that already exists, but I have to obfuscate the details a bit. Here's the background: In our app we have a number or roles that are hierarchical, roughly like this: BasicUser -> SuperUser -> Admin -> SuperAdmin For authorization each User model instance has an attribute 'role' which corresponds to the above. We have a RESTful controller "Users" that is namespaced under Backoffice. So in short it's Backoffice::UsersController. class Backoffice::UsersController < ApplicationController filter_access_to :all #... RESTful actions + some others end So here's the problem: We want users to be able to give permissions for users to edit users but ONLY if they have a 'smaller' role than they currently have. I've created the following in authorization_rules.rb authorization do role :basic_user do has_permission_on :backoffice_users, :to => :index end role :super_user do includes :basic_user has_permission_on :backoffice_users, :to => :edit do if_attribute :role => is_in { %w(basic_user) } end end role :admin do includes :super_user end role :super_admin do includes :admin end end And unfortunately that's as far as I got, the rule doesn't seem to get applied. If I comment the rule out, nobody can edit If I leave the rule in you can edit everybody I've also tried a couple of variations on the if_attribute: if_attribute :role => is { 'basic_user' } if_attribute :role => 'basic_user' and they get the same effect. Does anybody have any suggestions?

• Form is creating already loaded attributes in addition to new attributes, how do I ignore the first?

  In my application you: Have an admin user that signs on and that user has a role (separate model), then I use the declarative_authorization plugin to give access to certain areas. That admin user can also register new users in the system, when they do this (using Authlogic) they fill out a nested form that includes that new users' role. So what is happening is the role of the admin user is being loaded by the declarative_authorization and then the nested form using the has_many_nested_attributes is loading that existing role as well as the new role for the new user (users can have many roles). Is there some way I can tell the new User being created to ignore the role assigned to the current_user and only create the role in the form for the new user? I have looked through a lot of different things, but it seems to get more complicated that these are nested attributes. Thanks in advance.

• Fix N+1 query in "declarative_authorization" gem using gem "bullet"

  Currently I am working on one big web application and to make it work faster I decided to refactor all N+1 queries (to decrease number of requests to database, http://rails-bestpractices.com/posts/29-fix-n-1-queries). So I installed gem "bullet" which doesn`t work with Rails 3.1.1 now (you can use fork from https://github.com/flyerhzm/bullet).
