  An alternative way to request read reciepts Sometime or other we use messaging namespaces like System.Net.Mail or System.Web.Mail to send emails from our applications. When we would need to include headers to request delivery or return reciepts (often called as Message Disposition Notifications) we lock ourselves to the limitation that not all email servers/email clients can satisfy this. We can enhance this border a little now, thanks to a new innovation I discovered from Gawab. It embeds a small invisible image of 1x1 dimension and the image source reads as recieptimg.php?id=2323425324. When this image is requested by the web browser or email client, the serverside handler does a smart mapping based on the ID to indicate that the message was read. We call them as 'Web Bugs'. But wait it is not a fool proof solution since spammers misuse this technique to confirm activeness of an email address and most of the email clients suppress inline images for security reasons. I just thought anyway would share this observation for the benefit of others.

  I have three mappings as follows: public MainChapterMap() { // other properties HasMany(x => x.ClientSpecific).KeyColumn("MainChapterId"); } public MainChapterClientMap() { // other properties References(x => x.MainChapter).Column("MainChapterId"); HasMany(x => x.Details).KeyColumn("MainChapterClientId"); } public MainChapterClientDetailMap() { // other properties References(x => x.MainChapterClient).Column("MainChapterClientId"); } MainChapter has many client-specific chapters. The client-specific chapters (MainChapterClient) has many translations (MainChapterClientDetail) The dele rules should be as follow: When deleting a MainChapter Delete the MainChapterClient row Delete the MainChapterClientDetail row(s) When deleting a MainChapterClient Do NOT delete the MainChapter row Delete the MainChapterClientDetail row(s) When deleting a MainChapterClientDetail Do NOT delete the MainChapter row Do NOT delete the MainChapterClientDetail row(s) But I no matter what I end up getting this error: deleted object would be re-saved by cascade (remove deleted object from associations)[Entities.MainChapterClient#39] I'm not sure how to set up my cascades anymore. Any help are more than welcomed!

  I am developing a web app with an ASP server side and I use an iframe for data push. An ASP handler flushes every once in a while some javascript to the iframe: context.Response.Write("<script language='javascript'>top.update('lala');</script>"); context.Response.Flush(); My problem is that sometimes, when I receive the data, I don't get the full text. For example I will receive this : update('lala'); One workaround I have is to have a thread flushing '..........' every 500ms. (Then I will receive script...... which will complete my javascript.) However I am sure there must be a way to have Response.Flush() sending the whole chunk of data. Does someone have an idea on how to use properly Response.Flush() ? Thank you!

So just to vent a little, what are some doozies that you may have run across? Just to get things started: One of our original developers wasn't sure what to call a secondary key - on what turned out to be a primary table for this app - so he called it: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs. Unfortunately this system generates entity mappings from the XML, and attributes defined there result in classes, methods, and constants that are referenced through-out the app. To this day it is very hard to find a source file that does not reference this, er, thing! By far, the biggest obstacle I'm running into is getting used to the keyboard layout change (ex. not being able to do ALT-Insert). Do any of you Windows-on-Mac veterans have any suggestions on how to ease the pain of transitioning (without moving to an external keyboard)? Are you changing mappings via VMWare's keyboard preferences? Or are you using something like AutoHotkey? Any other windows development tips for a Mac newb?

  I'm using AutoMapper in a number of projects within my solution. These projects may be deployed independantly, across multiple servers. In the documentation for AutoMapper it says: If you're using the static Mapper method, configuration only needs to happen once per AppDomain. That means the best place to put the configuration code is in application startup, such as the Global.asax file for ASP.NET applications. Whilst some of the projects will be ASP.net - most of these are class libraries / windows services. Where should I be configuring my mappings in this case?

• Do PHP-FPM (and other PHP handlers) need execute permissions on the PHP files they're serving?

  I read in a post at Server Fault that PHP-FPM needs execute permissions. However, the answer in When creating a website, what permissions and directory structure? only grants read and write permissions to PHP-FPM. Maybe I don't quite understand how PHP handlers (or CGI in general) work, but the two claims seem contradictory to me. As I understand, when Apache / Nginx gets a request for foobar.php, it "passes" the file to an appropriate handler. That is, I imagine it's as if www-root (or apache or whomever the webserver's running as) were to run some command, /usr/sbin/php-fpm foobar.php Actually, no, that's naive, I just realized. PHP-FPM must be a running instance (if it's to be performant, and cache, etc.), so probably PHP-FPM is just being told, "Hey, quick, process this file for me!" In either case, I don't see why execute permissions are necessary. It's not like the webserver needs to literally execute the file, i.e. ./foobar.php Is the Server Fault answer simply mistaken?

• How to model my database when using entity framework 4?

  Trying to wrap my head around the best approach in modelling a database when we are using Entity Framework 4 as the ORM layer. We are going to use asp.net mvc 2 for the application. Is it worth trying to model using the class diagram modeller that comes with Visual Studio 2010 where you graphically configure your models into the EDMX file and then generate out the database structure? I have run into a bunch of non trivial issues and for complex many to many mappings or multi primary key entities the answer is not that obvious even after poking around a while with the tools. I figure its easy at this point to give up and start modelling the DB using real, working DB modelling tools and then try to generate out the EDMX from the database, rather than trying to do the model first approach.

• Need to map classes to different databases at runtime in Hibernate

  I have MainDB database and unknown number (at compile time) of UserDB_1, ..., UserDB_N databases. MainDB contains names of those UserDB databases in some table (new UserDB can be created at runtime). All UserDB have exactly the same table names and fields. How to handle such situation in Hibernate? (database structure cannot be changed). Currently I am planning to create generic User classes not mapped to anything and just use native SQL for all queries: session.createSQLQuery("select * from " + db + ".user where id=1") .setResultTransformer(Transformers.aliasToBean(User.class)); Is there anything better I can do? Ideally I would want to have mappings for UserDB tables and relations and use HQL on required database.

  I've shown in a previous post how to make it easier to change the layout template for specific contents or areas. But what if you want to change another shape template for specific pages, for example the main Content shape on the home page? Here's how. When we changed the layout, we had the problem that layout is created very early, so early that in fact it can't know what content is going to be rendered. For that reason, we had to rely on a filter and on the routing information to determine what layout template alternates to add. This time around, we are dealing with a content shape, a shape that is directly related to a content item. That makes things a little easier as we have access to a lot more information. Compare that with the content item id for the shape we are looking at and you can know if that's the homepage content item. Please note that if that content is also displayed on another page than the home page it will also get the alternate: we are altering at the shape level and not at the URL/routing level like we did with the layout. • NHibernate parent-childs save redundant sql update executed

  I'm trying to save (insert) parent object with a collection of child objects, all objects are new. I prefer to manually specify what to save\update and when so I do not use any cascade saves in mappings and flush sessions by myself. So basically I save this object graph like: session.Save(Parent) foreach (var child in Parent.Childs) { session.Save(child); } session.Flush() I expect this code to insert Parent row, then each child row, however NHibernate executes this SQL: INSERT INTO PARENT.... INSERT INTO CHILD .... UPDATE CHILD SET ParentId=@1 WHERE Id=@2 This update statement is absolutely unnecessary, ParentId was already set correctly in INSERT. How do I get rid of it? Performance is very important for me.

• Microsoft sublanguage string to locale identifier

  I can't seem to find a way to convert, or find, a local identifier from a sublanguage string. This site shows the mappings: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd318693(v=VS.85).aspx I want the user to enter a sublanguage string, such as "France (FR)" and to get the local identifier from this, which in this case would be 0x0484. Or the other way around, if a user enters 0x0480 then to return French (FR). Has anyone encountered this problem before and can point me in the right direction? Otherwise I'm going to be writing a few mapping statements to hard code it and maintain future releases if anything changes. BTW, I'm coding in C++ for Windows platform. Cheers

• Vim: different key mapping for different window

  My .vimrc file has filetype mappings for different filetypes such as : autocmd FileType sh map gf ... autocmd FileType ruby map gf ... While rewriting a program from one language to another, I have 2 splits, one with a shell script and one with ruby. I would assume that "gf" would take on its mapping based on filetype. However, it can only hold one mapping at a time. Is there any way to declare a mapping only for the existing file/window. I tried ":windo" and ":bufdo" but they work for all windows or buffers.

If I have an ActionGroup with an Action save, and on this action I've set the activate Signal to "on_save_clicked", should it be fine to write: [CCode (instance_pos = -1)] public void on_save_clicked(){ print("I would like to save, please\n"); } in global scope and then use builder.connect_signals(null)? When i do this, i just get "Could not find signal handler 'on_save_clicked'" when executing the program. No compile errors. I'm using valac --pkg gtk+-3.0 test.vala for compiling and glade-3.10.0

When I try to run the console application, I'm getting this error: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more detail. I have created a SQLite database "firstProject.db" and referenced the full path to the file in the call to: return Fluently.Configure() .Database(SQLiteConfiguration.Standard .UsingFile(DbFile)) .Mappings(m => m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssemblyOf<Program>()) .ExposeConfiguration(BuildSchema) .BuildSessionFactory(); so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.   Hi, on our site we do url rewriting to generate massive amounts of database generated pages. on every page, there is a Login control for users. like this: Internal aspx page: /DB.aspx?id=123 User visible url: /ABC/123.aspx, /ABC/456.aspx ... (url rewritten) unfortunately, the tag on each page has an action attribute of "DB.aspx?id=123". when the user clicks the button the browser is posting to /ABC/DB.aspx?id=123 which of course does not exist. solutions i tried: 1. change the action attribute by subclassing HtmlForm. this destroys the all other forms on the site. 2. remove the action attribute (so that the browser is always posting to the same url). this works on the rewritten pages but on "/" (the default.aspx in the root dir) i get a message that the verb post is not allowed on "/" (iis 6 and i have no control over mappings) anybody?

• Ado.Net Entity produces "namespace cannot be found"

  I've seen several possible solutions to this, but none have worked for me. After adding a ADO.NET Entity Data Model to my .Net Forms C# web project, I am unable to use it. Perhaps I made a mistake adding it? The name of the file added is QcFormData.edmx. In my code, perhaps I'm instantiating it incorrectly? I tried adding the line: QcFormDataContainer db = new QcFormDataContainer(); It appears in Intellisense, but when compiling I get the error : Error 13 The type or namespace name 'QcFormDataContainer' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) I've followed the suggestions that I found online that did not help: 1) made sure there is "using System.Data.Entity" 2) made sure the dll exists. 3) made sure the reference exists. 4) one post said use using System.Web.Data.Entity; but I do not see that available. What am I missing? • Annotation based view mapping

  I am trying to get my head around annotation based mappings and I am having some trouble mapping requests directly to jsp. Do all request have to go through a controller? Is it possible to make it just go to a jsp without declaring a RequestMapping for GET? I am using a InternalResourceViewResolver. • Creating Rectangle-based buttons with OnClick events

  As the title implies, I want a Button class with an OnClick event handler. It should fire off connected events when it is clicked. This is as far as I've made it: public class Button { public event EventHandler OnClick; public Rectangle Rec { get; set; } public string Text { get; set; } public Button(Rectangle rec, string text) { this.Rec = rec; this.Text = text; } } I have no clue what I'm doing with regards to events. I know how to use them but creating them myself is another matter entirely. I've also made buttons without using events that work on a case-by-case basis. So basically, I want to be able to attach methods to the OnClick EventHandler that will fire when the Button is clicked (i.e., the mouse intersects Rec and the left mouse button is clicked).

• HSQLDB and in-memory files

  Is it possible to setup HSQLDB in a way, so that the files with the db information are written into memory instead of using actual files? I want to use hsqldb to export some data structures together with hibernate mappings. Is is, however, not possible to write temporary files, so that I need to generate the files in-memory and return a stream with their contents as a response. Setting hsqldb to use nio seems not to be a solution, because there is no way to get hold of those files before they get written onto the filesystem. What I'm thinking of is a protocol handler for hsqldb, but I didn't find a suitable solution yet. Just to describe in other words: A hack solution would be to pass hsqldb a stream or several streams. It would then during its operation write data into those streams. After all data is written, the user of the db could then use those streams to send it back over the network.
