  • Migrating From SQL Server Server 7 To 2005, What should I get excited about?

    The company I work for has decided to join the 21st century and upgrade our main database cluster from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2005. As a web developer what new whiz-bang features of SQL Server 2005 should I get excited about or get to know? Currently I'm mainly writing CRUD style queries, pretty much exclusively using Stored Procdures for a mixed ASP.net and Classic ASP environment.

However I want this user to be able to create own tables and let him do what he want with these. Is this possible? Could someone explain how this can be done?

  • NHibernate, transactions and TransactionScope

    I'm trying to find the best solution to handle transaction in a web application that uses NHibernate. We use a IHttpModule and at HttpApplication.BeginRequest we open a new session and we bind it to the HttpContext with ManagedWebSessionContext.Bind(context, session); We close and unbind the session on HttpApplication.EndRequest. In our Repository base class, we always wrapped a transaction around our SaveOrUpdate, Delete, Get methods like, according to best practice: public virtual void Save(T entity) { var session = DependencyManager.Resolve<ISession>(); using (var transaction = session.BeginTransaction()) { session.SaveOrUpdate(entity); transaction.Commit(); } } But then this doesn't work, if you need to put a transaction somewhere in e.g. a Application service to include several repository calls to Save, Delete, etc.. So what we tried is to use TransactionScope (I didn't want to write my own transactionmanager). To test that this worked, I use an outer TransactionScope that doesn't call .Complete() to force a rollback: Repository Save(): public virtual void Save(T entity) { using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { var session = Depe.ndencyManager.Resolve<ISession>(); session.SaveOrUpdate(entity); scope.Complete(); } } The block that uses the repository: TestEntity testEntity = new TestEntity { Text = "Test1" }; ITestRepository testRepository = DependencyManager.Resolve<ITestRepository>(); testRepository.Save(testEntity); using (var scope = new TransactionScope()) { TestEntity entityToChange = testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); entityToChange.Text = "TestChanged"; testRepository.Save(entityToChange); } TestEntity entityChanged = testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); Assert.That(entityChanged.Text, Is.EqualTo("Test1")); This doesn't work. But to me if NHibernate supports TransactionScope it would! What happens is that there is no ROLLBACK at all in the database but when the testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); statement is executed a UPDATE with SET Text = "TestCahgned" is fired instead (It should have been fired between BEGIN TRAN and ROLLBACK TRAN). NHibernate reads the value from the level1 cache and fires a UPDATE to the database. Not expected behaviour!? From what I understand whenever a rollback is done in the scope of NHibernate you also need to close and unbind the current session. My question is: Does anyone know of a good way to do this using TransactionScope and ManagedWebSessionContext?

  • SQL Rounding Problems in 2005 and 2000

    I have a value in the database which is 2.700000002. When I run a query in Management studio in SQL SERVER 2005 I get 2.7. But when I run in SQL SERVER 2000 query analyzer it comes 2.700000002. 2.70000002 is correct why is SQL SERVER 2005 trying to change the value by rounding it or selecting the floor value?

If i pressed enter key, after getting all values it done well. How to get all columns in a row with out pressed enter key?

Is it more secure to use asp.net controls or does not matter. I have an array from my database: NSArray *elementArray = [[[menuArray valueForKey:@"meals"] valueForKey:@"recipe"] valueForKey:@"elements"] The problem here is that I would like all my elements of all my meals of all my menus in an array such that: [elementArray objectAtIndex:0] = my first element etc... In the example above, the elements are separated by the keys. How can I get that? Hope it's clear enough... Thanks

So such code, to my knowledge is not suitable for unit testing Is there a tool that can test each routine automatically replacing references to code elements external to the routine (be they functions, variables or GUI controls) with appropriate mocks(?) and record the results in a database for later comparison after code changes? So the testing program would have the duty of writing, running and reporting tests with minimal intervention?

I plan to use Zend Server only to do URL profiling to know function level performance of my code.     Can somebody explain briefly the differences between a "WSS Web Application" and a normal "IIS Website"? I have read that a WSS web application is a "special" IIS Website with WSS featured. I also know that the content of a web application is stored in an SQL Server Website(called the content database) whereas an IIS Website stores it on a hard disk on the server.     Hello, My application gets configured via a lot of key/values (let's say 30.000 for instance) I want to find the best deployment method for these configurations, knowing that I want to avoid DEFINEs to allow for runtime re-configuration. I have thought of - pre-compiling them into an array via a php file - pre-compiling them into a tmpfs sqlite database - pre-compiling them into a memcached db what are my options for the best random access time to these configuration (memory is not an issue) ? I have used a retrieval argument called :al_test_id to promot the user to insert an id and search the database for the corresponding id entries, and if found, display it to the user. Now if no entry is found, then I want the user to be able to insert a new row using the id that he/she entered as the retrieval argument. How can I do that?

  • ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Relation does not show in Contacts app

    I programatically added almost every type of contact field to a contact and they all work except for Relation. Relation types get added to the contacts database, but they don't show up in the Contacts app. I don't see a way to add Relation information through the Contacts GUI for a standard Gmail contact either. Does the Contacts app just not support this data type?

    Hi, does anyone know of a very simple SQL Server client tool - that does the same basic functions as Management Studio (i.e. choose a database and run a query - doesn't need an Object Explorer, or anything fancy)? Ideally it would be great to have a single exe or zip file version that I could take around on a USB key - anything to avoid installing the full set of SQL Server client tools all the time!     Is there a neat way of getting a Locale instance from its "programmatic name" as returned by Locale's toString() method? An obvious and ugly solution would be parsing the String and then constructing a new Locale instance according to that, but maybe there's a better way / ready solution for that? The need is that I want to store some locale specific settings in a SQL database, including Locales themselves, but it would be ugly to use serialized Locale objects there. I would rather store their String representations, which seem to be quite adequate in detail.
