  • 505 (HTTP version not supported) sent to client when ASP.NET application attempts to access WCF service

    We have created a DLL to facilitate access of a 3rd-party WCF Service. This DLL works fine in a Windows Application on our test machines, but when we try to use it in an ASP.NET application on our web server, our web server returns a 505 HTTP version not supported error to the client. To clarify, the setup is Client-Server-WCF Service. Using Fiddler, I can tell that our server is not making requests to the WCF Service. The calls are wrapped in a try/catch block, but no Exception occurs. Instead, as soon as the call to the service is attempted, our server returns a 505 error to the client and terminates execution. We are using clientCertificate authentication over HTTPS with serviceCertificate certificateValidationMode set to "None". Thanks

  • can I debug my web project and wcf project on same vs 2008 instance ?

    I have two projects in my solution   1- asp.net web project.   2- wcf serivce project.   3- other common projects between two listed above Current on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files. Is there a way i can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance and also be able to debug my asp.net web project. ? I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one.     We had a backward compatibility problem in WCF client, when in Service application a new value was added to one of enums. We discussed different ways to avoid this backward compatibility issues, and I found recommendation do not expose enum in wcf response in http://stackoverflow.com/a/788281/52277.It is still required to create new versions of our service interfaces to replace each enum fields with string field, that expects only documented values, and describe, what should be default behavior, if field has an unexpected value.

  • Implement service layer in MVC

    We have a defined service layer hosted in WCF. We are now building a website that will need to use the services functionality. The website is being written in ASP.NET MVC 4 and I'm trying to decide how to reference the WCF service from the MVC app. It's a large complex website and it will be changing on a weekly basis. My first reaction is to abstract out the service references (About 7 services on this one WCF host) and create a service ref facade library with which the website interacts. But, I don't know exactly how to use the service facade in MVC. I'm starting to think the Models will be responsible for it because when the controller gets a model, that model should call the service (if needed) and return what the controller asked. I'm trying to avoid having the MVC app know details of the service references. So, I could have a model factory that creates whatever model the controllers need and they can use the service facade to accomplish it. Is this a good plan, or am I off track?

  • Which HTTP redirect status code is best for this REST API scenario?

    I'm working on a REST API. The key objects ("nouns") are "items", and each item has a unique ID. E.g. to get info on the item with ID foo: GET http://api.example.com/v1/item/foo New items can be created, but the client doesn't get to pick the ID. Instead, the client sends some info that represents that item. So to create a new item: POST http://api.example.com/v1/item/ hello=world&hokey=pokey With that command, the server checks if we already have an item for the info hello=world&hokey=pokey. So there are two cases here. Case 1: the item doesn't exist; it's created. This case is easy. 201 Created Location: http://api.example.com/v1/item/bar Case 2: the item already exists. Here's where I'm struggling... not sure what's the best redirect code to use. 301 Moved Permanently? 302 Found? 303 See Other? 307 Temporary Redirect? Location: http://api.example.com/v1/item/foo I've studied the Wikipedia descriptions and RFC 2616, and none of these seem to be perfect. Here are the specific characteristics I'm looking for in this case: The redirect is permanent, as the ID will never change. So for efficiency, the client can and should make all future requests to the ID endpoint directly. This suggests 301, as the other three are meant to be temporary. The redirect should use GET, even though this request is POST. This suggests 303, as all others are technically supposed to re-use the POST method. In practice, browsers will use GET for 301 and 302, but this is a REST API, not a website meant to be used by regular users in browsers. It should be broadly usable and easy to play with. Specifically, 303 is HTTP/1.1 whereas 301 and 302 are HTTP/1.0. I'm not sure how much of an issue this is. At this point, I'm leaning towards 303 just to be semantically correct (use GET, don't re-POST) and just suck it up on the "temporary" part. But I'm not sure if 302 would be better since in practice it's been the same behavior as 303, but without requiring HTTP/1.1. But if I go down that line, I wonder if 301 is even better for the same reason plus the "permanent" part. Thoughts appreciated!

  • Howto WCF Service HTTPS Binding and Endpoint Configuration in IIS with Load Balancer?

    We have a WCF service that is being hosted on a set of 12 machines. There is a load balancer that is a gateway to these machines. Now the site is setup as SSL; as in a user accesses it through using an URL with https. I know this much, the URL that addresses the site is https, but none of the servers has a https binding or is setup to require SSL. This leads me to believe that the load balancer handles the https and the connection from the balancer to the servers are unencrypted (this takes place behind the firewall so no biggie there). The problem we're having is that when a Silverlight client tries to access a WCF service it is getting a "Not Found" error. I've set up a test site along with our developer machines and have made sure that the bindings and endpoints in the web.config work with the client. It seems to be the case in the production environment that we get this error. Is there anything wrong with the following web.config? Should we be setting up how https is handled in a different manner? We're at a loss on this currently since I've tried every programmatic solution with endpoints and bindings. None of the solutions I have found deal with a load balancer in the manner we're dealing.     I have an .NET 3.5 WCF WebService hostet in IIS 6 and using a SSL certificate. The communication between client and server works. Then I activate "request client certificate" and the client can't connect anymore Exception: System.ServiceModel.Security.SecurityNegotiationException: Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS with authority 'polizei-bv.stadt.hamburg.de'. Inner Exception: System.Net.WebException: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel. The certificate, the client uses is in the certificate store (local computer), the root ca is int the trusted root certification authorities store. Where can I check for an explanation on the server side? How can I check if the client really supplies it's certificate (client is not on my side)?

  • Starting with text based MUD/MUCK game

    I’ve had this idea for a video game in my head for a long time but I’ve never had the knowledge or time to get it done. I still don’t really, but I am willing to dedicate a chunk of my time to this before it’s too late. Recently I started studying Lua script for a program called “MUSH Client” which works for MU* telnet style text games. I want to use the GUI capabilities of Mush Client with a MU* server to create a basic game but here is my dilemma. I figured this could be a suitable starting place for me. BUT… Because I’m not very programmer savvy yet, I don’t know how to download/install/use the MU* server software. I was originally considering Protomuck because a few of the MU*s I were more impressed with began there. http://www.protomuck.org/ I downloaded it, but I guess I'm too used to GUI style programs so I'm having great difficulty figuring out what to do next. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? heh..

    Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? Summary: I want to start hosting my product. I'd like to register domains (at some point). I'm a linux beginner. Thinking about scalability and price, I'm thinking am I better off on a VPN to get started or would some form of cloud hosting be better (not being familiar with either). Full question: I'm creating a product where people can create their own 3D representations of whatever data / info they have, and (re)organise that data. The product is coming along beautifully on my local environment, but it's about time I start getting some form of hosting ready, and I could really use some advice where / how to get started: I'd like people to be able to move/register their own domains on my server. I could start without this just to demo the product, but it would be the very first on the todo list. I'd like to automatically copy some files / install databases etc for each domain. I probably want to see if I can let users manage their own subdomains at some points, but for now: I'd like start as simple as possible. I've always on a windows machine, so my linux experience is quite basic. I really don't mind getting into it, but I'm thinking it's better to get my product out first of all and see where to go from there. Although... I'd like things to be scalable. If I set up some reseller VPN now which only scales to 100 domains or so, which means I have to set up something else / move again when I pass that level, or which means that I'm in trouble if I suddenly get lots of new customers... hmm. Finally, I need to start cheap. I'm putting all I have into starting this company, and live on very little. So before I have any customers, 50 dollars a month is a fair bit and 100 dollars a month may be too much. If anyone has some tips to help get me started I'd be really grateful.

  • Building a template engine - starting point

    We're building a Django-based project with a template component. This component will be separate from the project as such and can be Django/Python, Node, Java or whatever works. The template has to be rendered into HTML. The templates will contain references to objects with properties that are defined in the DB, say, a Bus. For eg, it could be something like [object type="vehicle" weight="heavy"] and it would have to pull a random object from the DB fulfilling the criteria : type="vehicle" weight="heavy" (bus/truck/jet) and then substitute that tag with an image, say, of a Bus. Also it would have to be able to handle some processing. Eg: What is [X type="integer" lte="10"] + [Y type="integer" lte="10"] [option X+Y correct_ans="true"] [option X-Y correct_ans="false"] [option X+y+1 correct_ans="false"] The engine would be expected to fill in a random integer value <= 10 for X and Y and show radioboxes for each of the options. Would also have to store the fact that the first option is the correct answer. Does it to make sense to write something from the scratch? Or is it better to use an existing templating system (like Django's own templating system) as a starting point? Any suggestions on how I can approach this?

  • NHibernate 2 Beginner's Guide Review

    OK, here's the review I promised a while ago. This is a beginner's introduction to NHibernate, so if you have already some experience with NHibernate, you will notice it lacks a lot of concepts and information. It starts with a good description of NHibernate and why would we use it. It goes on describing basic mapping scenarios having primary keys generated with the HiLo or Identity algorithms, without actually explaining why would we choose one over the other. As for mapping, the book talks about XML mappings and provides a simple example of Fluent NHibernate, comparing it to its XML counterpart. When it comes to relations, it covers one-to-many/many-to-one and many-to-many, not one-to-one relations, but only talks briefly about lazy loading, which is, IMO, an important concept. Only Bags are described, not any of the other collection types. The log4net configuration description gets it's own chapter, which I find excessive. The chapter on configuration merely lists the most common properties for configuring NHibernate, both in XML and in code. Querying only talks about loading by ID (using Get, not Load) and using Criteria API, on which a paging example is presented as well as some common filtering options (property equals/like/between to, no examples on conjunction/disjunction, however). There's a chapter fully dedicated to ASP.NET, which explains how we can use NHibernate in web applications. It basically talks about ASP.NET concepts, though. Following it, another chapter explains how we can build our own ASP.NET providers using NHibernate (Membership, Role). The available entity generators for NHibernate are referred and evaluated on a chapter of their own, the list is fine (CodeSmith, nhib-gen, AjGenesis, Visual NHibernate, MyGeneration, NGen, NHModeler, Microsoft T4 (?) and hbm2net), examples are provided whenever possible, however, I have some problems with some of the evaluations: for example, Visual NHibernate scores 5 out of 5 on Visual Studio integration, which simply does not exist! I suspect the author means to say that it can be launched from inside Visual Studio, but then, what can't? Finally, there's a chapter I really don't understand. It seems like a bag where a lot of things are thrown in, like NHibernate Burrow (which actually isn't explained at all), Blog.Net components, CSS template conversion and web.config settings related to the maximum request length for file uploads and ending with XML configuration, with the help of GhostDoc. Like I said, the book is only good for absolute beginners, it does a fair job in explaining the very basics, but lack a lot of not-so-basic concepts. Among other things, it lacks: Inheritance mapping strategies (table per class hierarchy, table per class, table per concrete class) Load versus Get usage Other usefull ISession methods First level cache (Identity Map pattern) Other collection types other that Bag (Set, List, Map, IdBag, etc Fetch options User Types Filters Named queries LINQ examples HQL examples And that's it!   • Quickie Guide Getting Java Embedded Running on Raspberry Pi

    Gary C. and I did a Bay Area Java User Group presentation of how to get Java Embedded running on a RPi. See: here. But, if you want the Quickie Guide on how to get Java up and running on the RPi, then follow these steps (which I'm doing right now as we speak, since I got my RPi in the mail on Monday. Woo-hoo!!!). So, follow along at home as I do the same steps here on my board... 1. Download the Win32DiskImager if you are on Windows, or use dd on a Linux PC: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/0.6/0.6/+download/win32diskimager-binary.zip 2. Download the RPi Debian Wheezy image from here: http://files.velocix.com/c1410/images/debian/7/2012-08-08-wheezy-armel/2012-08-08-wheezy-armel.zip 3. Insert a blank 4GB SD Card into your Windows or Linux PC. 4. Use either Win32DiskImager or Linux dd to burn the unzipped image from #2 to the SD Card. 5. Insert the SD Card into your RPi. Connect an Ethernet cable to your RPi to your network. Connect the RPi Power Adapter. 6. The RPi will boot onto your network. Find its IP address using Windows Wireshark or Linux: sudo tcpdump -vv -ieth0 port 67 and port 68 7. ssh to your RPi: ssh <ip_addr_rpi> -l pi <Password: "raspberry"> 8. Download Java SE Embedded: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/embedded/downloads/javase/index.html NOTE: First click accept, then choose the first bundle in the list: ARMv6/7 Linux - Headless EABI, VFP, SoftFP ABI, Little Endian - ejre-7u6-fcs-b24-linux-arm-vfp-client_headless-10_aug_2012.tar.gz 9. scp the bundle from #8 to your RPi: scp <ejre-bundle> pi@<ip_addr_rpi> 10. mkdir /usr/local, untar the bundle from #9 and rename (move) the ejre1.7.0_06 directory to /usr/local/java That's it!
