  • Where to store global variables like file paths in java ?

    - by Jules Olléon
In my application I use some icons. Where should I store the path of the directory containing those icons ? The icons are used in different classes so it doesn't really make sense to store them in one of those classes in particular. I read that global variables are evil, but is it acceptable to use a class (eg Commons) containing only public static final fields to store this king of data ? What solution is used in professional applications ?

  • What is the simplest way to map a folder on the file system to a url in Tomcat?

    - by Simon
Here's my problem... I have a small prototype app (happens to be in Grails hosted on AWS) and I want to add the ability of the user to upload a few (max 10) images. I want to persist these images on disk on the server machine, in a folder location which is outside my WAR. I realise that there is probably a super-scalable solution involving more web servers and optimised static asset serving, but for the approximately 100 users I am likely to get, it's really not worth the effort and cost. So, what is the simplest way I can have a virtual folder from my url map to a physical folder on disk? I sort of want... http://myapp.com/static to map to a folder which I can configure e.g. /var/www/static so I can then have in my code... <img src="/static/user1/picture.jpg"/> I don't particularly mind whether the resulting physical folders are directly browsable. Security will eventually be an issue, but it isn't at the start. So, what are my options? I have looked at virtual hosts on the apache site, but it feels more complicated than I need. I don't want to use the Grails static rendering plugins.

  • ASP.NET javascript. Put it in code behind or put it in .aspx file?

    - by punkouter
    Why do people put javascript in the code behind ? I think it is ugly to have 100 (see below) of these.... Is there some basic reasons that javascript must be in the code behind in some instances? And when it should in the aspx. ?? // now we gotta recalc fields szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbSocialSecurityPercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSocialSecurity3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');"; szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbMedicarePercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbMedicare3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');"; szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbHealthInsurancePercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbHealthInsurance3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');"; szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbLifeInsurancePercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbLifeInsurance3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');"; szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbVacationPercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbVacation3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');"; szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbSickLeavePercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSickLeave3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');"; szCalcBenefitsTotal += " CalcCostFromPct('" + tbRetirementPercent3.ClientID + "', '" + tbRetirement3.ClientID + "', '" + tbSalaryAdjusted3.ClientID + "');";

  • Fastest way to convert file from latin1 to utf-8 in python.

    - by xsaero00
I need fastest way to convert files from latin1 to utf-8 in python. The files are large ~ 2G. ( I am moving DB data ). So far I have import codecs infile = codecs.open(tmpfile, 'r', encoding='latin1') outfile = codecs.open(tmpfile1, 'w', encoding='utf-8') for line in infile: outfile.write(line) infile.close() outfile.close() but it is still slow. The conversion takes one fourth of the whole migration time. I could also use a linux command line utility if it is faster than native python code.

  • I have a 18MB MySQL table backup. How can I restore such a large SQL file?

    - by Henryz
I use a Wordpress plugin called 'Shopp'. It stores product images in the database rather than the filesystem as standard, I didn't think anything of this until now. I have to move server, and so I made a backup, but restoring the backup is proving a horrible task. I need to restore one table called wp_shopp_assets which is 18MB. Any advice is hugely appreciated. Thanks, Henry.

  • How do you pull the URL for an ASP.NET web reference from a configuration file in Visual Studio 2008

    - by Ian Robinson
I have a web reference for our report server embedded in our application. The server that the reports live on could change though, and I'd like to be able to change it "on the fly" if necessary. I know I've done this before, but can't seem to remember how. Thanks for your help. update - I've manually driven around this for the time being. It's not a big deal to set the URL in the code, but I'd like to figure out what the "proper" way of doing this in VS 2008 is. Could anyone provide any further insights? Thanks!

I mean the height I set was 80 but it was not set as 80 height. How can I make it. Thank You

  • How does JSON compare to XML in terms of file size and serialisation/deserialisation time?

    - by nbolton
I have an application that performs a little slow over the internet due to bandwidth reasons. I have enabled GZip which has improved download time by a significant amout, but I was also considering whether or not I could switch from XML to JSON in order to squeeze out that last bit of performance. Would using JSON make the message size significantly smaller, or just somewhat smaller? Let's say we're talking about 250kB of XML data (which compresses to 30kB).

Any ideas?

  • Which would be better? Storing/access data in a local text file, or in a database?

    - by TerranRich
Basically, I'm still working on a puzzle-related website (micro-site really), and I'm making a tool that lets you input a word pattern (e.g. "r??n") and get all the matching words (in this case: rain, rein, ruin, etc.). Should I store the words in local text files (such as words5.txt, which would have a return-delimited list of 5-letter words), or in a database (such as the table Words5, which would again store 5-letter words)? I'm looking at the problem in terms of data retrieval speeds and CPU server load. I could definitely try it both ways and record the times taken for several runs with both methods, but I'd rather hear it from people who might have had experience with this. Which method is generally better overall?
