  • Maintaining a secure database of user logins and info?

    - by Rafe Kettler
I want to have a login form on a charity website I am building (it's for a friend, and I'm learning on the go), and I want to know what languages/software should I learn to build databases for user logins and info? Note: it HAS to be secure and relatively simple to learn for someone with moderate programming experience. Update: I understand that CMSs offer good tools for logins etc. but I want to do this all by myself.

  • Primary language - C++/Qt, C#, Java?

    - by Airjoe
I'm looking for some input, but let me start with a bit of background (for tl;dr skip to end). I'm an IT major with a concentration in networking. While I'm not a CS major nor do I want to program as a vocation, I do consider myself a programmer and do pretty well with the concepts involved. I've been programming since about 6th grade, started out with a proprietary game creation language that made my transition into C++ at college pretty easy. I like to make programs for myself and friends, and have been paid to program for local businesses. A bit about that- I wrote some programs for a couple local businesses in my senior year in high school. I wrote management systems for local shops (inventory, phone/pos orders, timeclock, customer info, and more stuff I can't remember). It definitely turned out to be over my head, as I had never had any formal programming education. It was a great learning experience, but damn was it crappy code. Oh yeah, by the way, it was all vb6. So, I've used vb6 pretty extensively, I've used c++ in my classes (intro to programming up to algorithms), used Java a little bit in another class (had to write a ping client program, pretty easy) and used Java for some simple Project Euler problems to help learn syntax and such when writing the program for the class. I've also used C# a bit for my own simple personal projects (simple programs, one which would just generate an HTTP request on a list of websites and notify if one responded unexpectedly or not at all, and another which just held a list of things to do and periodically reminded me to do them), things I would've written in vb6 a year or two ago. I've just started using Qt C++ for some undergrad research I'm working on. Now I've had some formal education, I [think I] understand organization in programming a lot better (I didn't even use classes in my vb6 programs where I really should have), how it's important to structure code, split into functions where appropriate, document properly, efficiency both in memory and speed, dynamic and modular programming etc. I was looking for some input on which language to pick up as my "primary". As I'm not a "real programmer", it will be mostly hobby projects, but will include some 'real' projects I'm sure. From my perspective: QtC++ and Java are cross platform, which is cool. Java and C# run in a virtual machine, but I'm not sure if that's a big deal (something extra to distribute, possibly a bit slower? I think Qt would require additional distributables too, right?). I don't really know too much more than this, so I appreciate any help, thanks! TL;DR Am an avocational programmer looking for a language, want quick and straight forward development, liked vb6, will be working with database driven GUI apps- should I go with QtC++, Java, C#, or perhaps something else?

  • Java: Interface vs Abstract Class (regarding fields)

    - by lifeR00t
From what I have gathered, I want to force a class to use particular private fields (and methods) I need an abstract class because an interface only declares public/static/final fields and methods. Correct?? I just started my first big java project and want to make sure I'm not going to hurt myself later :)

  • Good authorize.net PHP libraries

    - by markwatson
I'm working on a PHP project and am looking for a good authorize.net gateway. I want something with mature code that's tested. The goal is to avoid writing and testing the entire thing myself based on the authorize.net api docs. Does anyone know of any good PHP libraries for this? I've search Google to no avail.

  • Will Visual Studio 2010 democratize UML ?

    - by asksuperuser
I've been very upset these past years with all the UML tools (especially the clunky mammoth Rational Rose from IBM which I really hated each time a client asked to use it). I think UML did suffer from bad integration. I rarely used UML myself because of lack of productivity. So I had a positive surprise with Visual Studio 2010 especially the sequence diagram reversing tool which really helps understand code. For people who had tried VS 2010 Ultimate do you think the same ?

  • Is there an open source immutable dictionary for C#, with fast 'With/Without' methods?

    - by Strilanc
I'm looking for a proper C# immutable dictionary, with fast update methods (that create a partial copy of the dictionary with slight changes). I've implemented one myself, using zippers to update a red-black tree, but it's not particularly fast. By 'immutable dictionary' I don't just mean readonly or const. I want something that has reasonably fast 'With' and 'Without', or equivalent, methods that return a thing with slight modifications without modifying the original. An example from another language is map in Scala

  • Changing new Tomcat settings from the defaults in STS Eclipse

    - by Ribeye
I find myself continually having to delete my Tomcat 7 server in STS Eclipse and re-installing. Each time I have to then: a) increase start up time from 45 sec and b) increase Tomcat memory by adding something like this on the "VM Arguments" under the "Arguments" tab: "-XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:PermSize=512m -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit" How do you change defaults for a) and b)? Google has plenty of info on changing these one time, but I want to change the defaults for a "new", and on this the search is coming up a blank. Thanks

  • What tricks do you use to get yourself "in the zone"?

    - by Tim Jarvis
Once I am "in the zone" I am extremely productive and code just flows out of me, often I can get 2 or 3 days coding done in 1 day. But I find that often its hard to get to that place, I find myself procrastinating, getting distracted by other things (SO for example). Is this experience common? How do you force yourself into that state of mind? Is it simply something you can't force?

  • Correlation between font size in Flash and .NET/GDI+

    - by danbystrom
I guess the title contains my whole question. How can I draw a string onto an image in Flash and .NET/GDI+ respectively and gain the same result? (I'm not a Flash programmer myself and it is rather hard to find out about what kind of unit Flash uses by googling for something like "flash font size"...) Ekeforshus

  • Deceptive MySQL Query

    - by jerebear
So I don't consider myself a novice at MySQL but this one has me stumped: I have a message board and I want to pull a list of all the most recent posts grouped by the Thread ID. Here's the table: MB_Posts -ID -Thread_ID -Created_On (timestamp) -Creator_User (user_id) -Subject -Contents -Edited (timestamp) -Reported I've tried many different things to keep it simple but I would like help from the community on this one. Just to kick this out there...this one does not work as expected: SELECT * FROM MB_Posts GROUP BY Thread_ID ORDER BY ID DESC

  • Restricting Edit and Delete in Ruby on Rails

    - by phleet
I want to be able to edit and delete resources myself, but not allow users of the application to do so. Is there an easy way of doing this in Rails? An incomplete solution would be just to remove the "delete" and "edit" buttons from the index view, but that doesn't disable their ability to do so via direct HTTP requests. Running Rails 2.2.2 and ruby 1.8.7

  • Will HTML5 replace silverlight?

    - by Nasser Hadjloo
A while ago I read a news here, that Microsoft changed its strategy for silverlight and will replace it with HTML5. As it is a controversial discussion, some guys from Microsoft and other corporation wrote about it and some agreed and some don't? As it is important to be aware of near future of tools that you are using, what do you think, Will Microsoft replace Silverlight with HTML5 or not? I myself believe that it will happen in 2012, the time that HTML5 released completely, and Microsoft are releasing VS2012.

  • Can .NET Task instances go out of scope during run?

    - by Henry Jackson
If I have the following block of code in a method (using .NET 4 and the Task Parallel Library): var task = new Task(() => DoSomethingLongRunning()); task.Start(); and the method returns, will that task go out of scope and be garbage collected, or will it run to completion? I haven't noticed any issues with GCing, but want to make sure I'm not setting myself up for a race condition with the GC.

  • How can I quickly set the iPhone deployment target in Xcode?

    - by nevan
I was reading this great article about Base SDK and Deployment targets and decided to try it out myself. The Deployment target seems to be buried in the Build settings, and not that easy to access compared to the Base SDK target (which is right there in the General tab of the project settings). To get to the Deployment settings now I have to Get Info, go to the Build tab, then search for "Deployment". Is there a quick way to check and access the Deployment target in Xcode that I'm missing?

  • Qt C++ XML, validating against a DTD?

    - by Airjoe
Is there a way to validate an XML file against a DTD with Qt's XML handling? I've tried googling around but can't seem to get a straight answer. If Qt doesn't include support for validating an XML file, what might be the process of implementing validation myself? Any good reference to start with in regards to validating XML against a spec? Thanks for the help!
