• View the Real Links Behind Shortened URLs in Chrome

  When you encounter shortened URLs there is always that worry in the back of your mind about where they really lead to. Now you can get a “sneak peak” at the real links behind those URLs with the View Thru extension for Google Chrome. The URL Shortening services officially supported at this time are: bit.ly, cli.gs, ff.im, goo.gl, is.gd, nyti.ms, ow.ly, post.ly, su.pr, & tinyurl.com. Before When you encounter a shortened URL you are pretty much on your own in deciding whether to trust that link or not. It would really be nice if you could just hover your mouse over those links and know where they will lead ahead of time. After Once you have the extension installed you are ready to access that link viewing goodness. Please note that you will need to reload any pages that were open prior to installing the extension. For our first example we chose a shortened URL from “bit.ly”. As you can see the entire link behind the shortened URL is displayed very nicely…no hidden surprises there! Note: There are no options to worry with for the extension. Another perfect result for the “goo.gl URL” shown below. View Thru will certainly remove a lot of the stress related to clicking on shortened URLs. Bonus Find Just out of curiosity we looked for a shortened URL not listed as being officially supported at this time. We found one with the “http://nyti.ms/” domain and View Thru showed the link perfectly…so be sure to give it a try on other services too. Conclusion If you worry about where a shortened URL will really lead you then the View Thru extension can help alleviate that stress. • Given the presentation model pattern, is the view, presentation model, or model responsible for adding child views to an existing view at runtime?

  I am building a Flex 4 based application using the presentation model design pattern. This application will have several different components to it as shown in the image below. The MainView and DashboardView will always be visible and they each have corresponding presentation models and models as necessary. These views are easily created by declaring their MXML in the application root. <s:HGroup width="100%" height="100%"> <MainView width="75% height="100%"/> <DashboardView width="25%" height="100%"/> </s:HGroup> There will also be many WidgetViewN views that can be added to the DashboardView by the user at runtime through a simple drop down list. This will need to be accomplished via ActionScript. The drop down list should always show what WidgetViewN has already been added to the DashboardView. Therefore some state about which WidgetViewN's have been created needs to be stored. Since the list of available WidgetViewN and which ones are added to the DashboardView also need to be accessible from other components in the system I think this needs to be stored in a Model object. My understanding of the presentation model design pattern is that the view is very lean. It contains as close to zero logic as is practical. The view communicates/binds to the presentation model which contains all the necessary view logic. The presentation model is effectively an abstract representation of the view which supports low coupling and eases testability. The presentation model may have one or more models injected in in order to display the necessary information. The models themselves contain no view logic whatsoever. So I have a several questions around this design. Who should be responsible for creating the WidgetViewN components and adding these to the DashboardView? Is this the responsibility of the DashboardView, DashboardPresentationModel, DashboardModel or something else entirely? It seems like the DashboardPresentationModel would be responsible for creating/adding/removing any child views from it's display but how do you do this without passing in the DashboardView to the DashboardPresentationModel? The list of available and visible WidgetViewN components needs to be accessible to a few other components as well. Is it okay for a reference to a WidgetViewN to be stored/referenced in a model? Are there any good examples of the presentation model pattern online in Flex that also include creating child views at runtime?

• Compute directional light frustum from view furstum points and light direction

  I'm working on a friends engine project and my task is to construct a new frustum from the light direction that overlaps the view frustum and possible shadow casters. The project already has a function that creates a frustum for this but its way to big and includes way to many casters (shadows) which can't be seen in the view frustum. Now the only parameter of this function are the normalized light direction vector and a view class which lets me extract the 8 view frustum points in world space. I don't have any additional infos about the scene. I have read some of the related Questions here but non seem to fit very well to my problem as they often just point to cascaded shadow maps. Sadly i can't use DX or openGl functions directly because this engine has a dedicated math library. From what i've read so far the steps are: Transform view frustum points into light space and find min/max x and y values (or sometimes minima and maxima of all three axis) and create a AABB using the min/max vectors. But what comes after this step? How do i transform this new AABB back to world space? What i've done so far: CVector3 Points[8], MinLight = CVector3(FLT_MAX), MaxLight = CVector3(FLT_MAX); for(int i = 0; i<8;++i){ Points[i] = Points[i] * WorldToShadowMapMatrix; MinLight = Math::Min(Points[i],MinLight); MaxLight = Math::Max(Points[i],MaxLight); } AABox box(MinLight,MaxLight); I don't think this is the right way to do it. The near plain probably has to extend into the direction of the light source to include potentional shadow casters. I've read the Microsoft article about cascaded shadow maps http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ee416307%28v=vs.85%29.aspx which also includes some sample code. But they seem to use the scenes AABB to determine the near and far plane which I can't since i cant access this information from the funtion I'm working in. Could you guys please link some example code which shows the calculation of such frustum? Thanks in advance! Additional questio: is there a way to construct a WorldToFrustum matrix that represents the above transformation?

• WPF Control Toolkits Comparison for LOB Apps

  In preparation for a new WPF project Ive been researching options for WPF Control toolkits.  While we want a lot of the benefits of WPF, the application is a fairly typical line of business application (LOB).  So were not focused on things like media and animations, but instead a simple, solid, intuitive, and modern user interface that allows for well architected separation of business logic and presentation layers. While WPF is mature, it hasnt lived the long life that Winforms has yet, so there is still a lot of room for third party and community control toolkits to fill the gaps between the controls that ship with the Framework.  There are two such gaps I was concerned about.  As this is an LOB app, we have needs for presenting lots of data and not surprisingly much of it is in grid format with the need for high performance, grouping, inline editing, aggregation, printing and exporting and things that weve been doing with LOB apps for a long time.  In addition we want a dashboard style for the UI in which the user can rearrange and shrink and grow tiles that house the content and functionality.  From a cost perspective, building these types of well performing controls from scratch doesnt make sense.  So I evaluated what you get from the .NET Framework along with a few different options for control toolkits.  I tried to be fairly thorough, but know that this isnt a detailed benchmarking comparison or intense evaluation.  Its just meant to be a feature set comparison to be used when thinking about building an LOB app in WPF.  I tried to list important feature differences and notes based on my experience with the trial versions and what I found in documentation and reference materials and samples.  Ive also listed the importance of the controls based on how I think they are needed in LOB apps.  There are several toolkits available, but given I dont have unlimited time, I picked just a few.  Maybe Ill add on more later.  The toolkits I compared are: Teleriks RadControls for WPF since I had heard some good things about Telerik Infragistics NetAdvantage WPF since both I and the customer have some experience with the vendors tools WPF Toolkit on codeplex since many of my colleagues have used it Blacklight codeplex project which had WPF support for the Tile View control  (with Release 4.3 WPF is not going to be supported in favor of focusing only on SilverLight controls, so I dropped that from the comparison) Click Here to Download the WPF Control Toolkits Comparison Hopefully this helps someone out there.  Feel free to post a comment on your experiences or if you think something I listed is incorrect or missing.  Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • iPhone landscape navigation back action shows vertical view transition?

  I have a regular UINavigationController and I push a series of UIViewController into the stack. The view transition for push controller is horizontal animation transition: [self.navigationController pushViewController:controller animated:YES]; However, when I press the Back button on the navigation bar, the view transition animation is vertical (vertically dropping down the previous controller/view). I don't seem to find any way to make this horizontal. This happens only in Landscape mode. Portrait mode the transition all happens as horizontal flip transition. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks

• Spark View Engine: How to set default master page name?

  I use Spark View Engine with nested master pages. I have Application.spark which defines the basic layout of the website. Then there are several other masters which themselves use Application.spark as master page (Default.spark, SinlgeColumn.spark, Gallery.spark, ...) If no master page is specified in a view file, then automatically Application.spark is choosen by the Spark View Engine. Since almost all my pages use "Default.spark" as master, is there a way to configure this globally? The other possibilities would be: Set the master in each spark file individually <use master="Default" />. But that's really annoying. Rename my master files (Default.spark <- Application.spark) but that really doesn't make any sense in naming.

• What's the best way to check if the view is visible on the window?

  What's the best way to check if the view is visible on the window? I have a CustomView which is part of my SDK and anybody can add CustomView to their layouts. My CustomView is taking some actions when it is visible to the user periodically. So if view becomes invisible to the user then it needs to stop the timer and when it becomes visible again it should restart its course. But unfortunately there is no certain way of checking if my CustomView becomes visible or invisible to the user. There are few things that I can check and listen to: onVisibilityChange //it is for view's visibility change, and is introduced in new API 8 version so has backward compatibility issue onWindowVisibilityChange //but my CustomView can be part of a ViewFlipper's Views so it can pose issues onDetachedFromWindows //this not as useful onWindowFocusChanged //Again my CustomView can be part of ViewFlipper's views. So if anybody has faced this kind of issues please throw some light.

• Can I include a view in Kohana 3 that is not within `application/views`?

  I am building a staff area for a website, which is completely different to the main brochure style site. I have 2 Kohana systems setup. I realise they can both share the same system and modules folder. Now, with the second one, I want to make the main template view a view in a different folder. I tried this in my base controller $this->template = DOCROOT . '../~new2/application/views/template.php'; But Kohana is looking for it in its own views folder as evident by the error I received. I even put a var_dump(file_exists($this->template)); // true to be sure it was finding the correct file. Is there a way to add a template file that is not within the views folder, without hacking the core Kohana code (and if I'm lucky not extending and overloading the view class).

• Django: Is it possible to attach media files (css, javascript etc) to a View-class?

  I can't fins any information on how to define css or javascript files in a view like: class MyView(View): .... class Media: css = { 'all' : 'mystyle.css' } If you have a form you can do like: class MyForm(ModelForm): .... class Media: css = { 'all' : 'mystyle.css' } And then in the template you can print the files like; {{ form.media.css }} I like that Syntax very much and I like to keep the View-specific css files in the app-directory. Does anyone know if it's possible? Thanks!

  What is the difference between uninstalling a program through Control Panel, and uninstalling via the Program's uninstall.exe? Example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\uninstall.exe In general, I read that it's better to uninstall a program via window's Control Panel. But for the programs that have their own uninstall.exe, is there any real difference between the un-installations? Is the Control Panel's cleaner in removing dependencies?

• AJAX Control Toolkit - Incompatibility with HTMLEditor and UpdatePanel

  Unfortunately HTMLEditor component of AJAX Control Toolkit is not compatible with the UpdatePanel. The problem is when we use accents with the Mozilla Firefox browser and HTMLEditor is inside an UpdatePanel. Letters that contain accents are left with an unknown character (so is stored in the database or even returned a PostBack). Can be tested using Mozilla Firefox on the site of the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit.  Write a word with accents and go to "Submit Content": http://www.asp.net/AJAX/AjaxControlToolkit/Samples/HTMLEditor/HTMLEditor.aspx As an alternative to this problem there are multiple component Rich Text Editors, some using jQuery and others not. Queneeshas provided us a list of 10 components that can be viewed here: http://www.queness.com/post/212/10-jquery-and-non-jquery-javascript-rich-text-editors Hopefully next release of the AJAX Control Toolkit, this inconsistency and others (like the ModalPopup Extender that already referenced in my blog) are resolved once and for all. This is because there are more updated versions prior to that do not have these problems, and with the passing of time some parts were coming into conflict. • Twitter User/Search Feature Header Support in LINQ to Twitter

  LINQ to Twitter’s goal is to support the entire Twitter API. So, if you see a new feature pop-up, it will be in-queue for inclusion. The same holds for the new X-Feature… response headers for User/Search requests.  However, you don’t have to wait for a special property on the TwitterContext to access these headers, you can just use them via the TwitterContext.ResponseHeaders collection. The following code demonstrates how to access the new X-Feature… headers with LINQ to Twitter: var user = (from usr in twitterCtx.User where usr.Type == UserType.Search && usr.Query == "Joe Mayo" select usr) .FirstOrDefault(); Console.WriteLine( "X-FeatureRateLimit-Limit: {0}\n" + "X-FeatureRateLimit-Remaining: {1}\n" + "X-FeatureRateLimit-Reset: {2}\n" + "X-FeatureRateLimit-Class: {3}\n", twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Limit"], twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Remaining"], twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Reset"], twitterCtx.ResponseHeaders["X-FeatureRateLimit-Class"]); The query above is from the User entity, whose type is Search; allowing you to search for the Twitter user whose name is specified by the Query parameter filter. After materializing the query, with FirstOrDefault, twitterCtx will hold all of the headers, including X-Feature… that Twitter returned.  Running the code above will display results similar to the following: X-FeatureRateLimit-Limit: 60 X-FeatureRateLimit-Remaining: 59 X-FeatureRateLimit-Reset: 1271452177 X-FeatureRateLimit-Class: namesearch In addition to getting the X-Feature… headers a capability you might have noticed is that the TwitterContext.ResponseHeaders collection will contain any HTTP that Twitter sends back to a query. Therefore, you’ll be able to access new Twitter headers anytime in the future with LINQ to Twitter. @JoeMayo

  Thanks to everyone who could make it to what turned out to be an excellent SBUG event.  First some thanks to:  Speakers: Anthony Ross and Elton Stoneman Host: The various people at Hitachi who helped to organise and arrange the venue.   Session 1 - Getting up and running with Windows Mobile and the Windows Azure Service Bus In this session Anthony discussed some considerations for using Windows Mobile and the Windows Azure Service Bus from a real-world project which Hitachi have been working on with EasyJet.  Anthony also walked through a simplified demo of the concepts which applied on the project.   In addition to the slides and demo it was also very interesting to discuss with the guys involved on this project to hear about their real experiences developing with the Azure Service Bus and some of the limitations they have had to work around in Windows Mobiles ability to interact with the service bus.   On the back of this session we will look to do some further activities around this topic and the guys offered to share their wish list of features for both Windows Mobile and Windows Azure which we will look to share for user group discussion.   Another interesting point was the cost aspects of using the ISB which were very low.   Session 2 - The Enterprise Cache In the second session Elton used a few slides which are based around one of his customer scenario's where they are looking into the concept of an Enterprise Cache within the organisation.  Elton discusses this concept and also a codeplex project he is putting together which allows you to take advantage of a cache with various providers such as Memcached, AppFabric Caching and Ncache.   Following the presentation it was interesting to hear peoples thoughts on various aspects such as the enterprise cache versus an out of process application cache.  Also there was interesting discussion around how people would like to search the cache in the future.   We will again look to put together some follow-up activity on this   Meeting Summary Following the meeting all slide decks are saved in the skydrive location where we keep content from all meetings: http://cid-40015ea59a1307c8.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public/SBUG/SBUG%20Meetings/2010%20April   Remember that the details of all previous events are on the following page. http://uksoabpm.org/Events.aspx   Competition We had three copies of the Windows Identity Foundation Patterns and Practices book that were raffles on the night, it would be great to hear any feedback on the book from those who won it.   Recording The user group meeting was recorded and we will look to make this available online sometime soon.   UG Business The following things were discussed as general UG topics:   We will change the name of the user group to the UK Connected Systems User Group to we are more inline with other user groups who cover similar topics and we believe this will help us to attract more members.  The content or focus of the user group is not expected to change.   The next meeting is 26th May and can be registered at the following link: http://sbugmay2010.eventbrite.com/

• How to install theme without using user-theme extension [Gnome Shell]

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome Shell 3.4. Since day one I had some random crashes mainly after reloading or during search. After a lot of research I concluded that user-theme extension is to blame. Only when disabled Gnome Shell runs 100% smoothly. So my question is: Is there a way to install a theme without using user-theme extension? edit: Trying to install it via Gnome Tweak Tool without user-theme extension won't work because of [this][1].

• Copy iMovie 11 project from one account to another user account?

  I have one user account as admin with several iMovie projects. After a period of time, I created a standard user account. Now I want to move admin user's iMovie projects to standard user. What I tried was to copy admin's Movies folder content to standard user by dropping to standard user's public shared dropbox. Then I copied the content to standard user's Movies folder. However, I cannot see iMovie projects in standard user by iMovie app. Is there anyway to move projects from one user to another user? Or copy one user's data to another user? Not sure if I missed anything if just copying Movies folder?

• User has not been granted the requested logon type for this computer

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information You may have noted in SharePoint 2013 that the sign in as a different user link is missing. I can imagine why Microsoft took it out, with claims, office apps, and expiring cookies, it was more of a pain than help. But, us devadmins are different – we need “Sign in As”. There are two ways around this problem, a) CTRL_SHIFT_RIGHT_CLICK on your browser, and choose run as different user. Here, run the browser as a different user – note this only works with windows based credentials. • Add AD Domain user to sudoers from the command line

  I'm setting up an Ubuntu 11.04 server VM for use as a database server. It would make everyone's lives easier if we could have folks login using windows credentials and perhaps even make the machine work with the current AD-driven security we've got elsewhere. The first leg of this was really easy to accomplish -- apt-get install likewise-open and I was pretty much in business. The problem I'm having is getting our admins into the sudoers groups -- I can't seem to get anything to take. I've tried: a) usermod -aG sudoers [username] b) adding the user names in several formats (DOMAIN\user, user@domain) to the sudoers file. None of which seemed to take, I still get told "DOMAIN\user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported." So, how do I add non-local users to the sudoers?
