• C# Windows Service XML

  Scenario I have a windows service written in C# that performs some processing based on parsing an XML file and use that data to carry out various tasks. The service also does various bits of logging - which uses settings from an APP.Config file. The Problem When the service is compiled, installed and run, the XML file seems to disappear. I'm getting the impression that it is just ignored or something like that. So far I've tried using TWO App.Config files, one named App.Config that contains settings for the service, and the other called MyService.exe.config that contains all of the data that was used in the XML file (the idea being that I can parse the XML from a config file that actually gets compiled and appears in my installation directory. However When I do this, all that happens is that ONE config file appears (with the name MyService.exe.config), but it contains the contents of the App.Config file and not the XML data that I want to parse. What I need All I want is to have a config file for my settings, and an XML file for my data. Question Is this possible? I know the application works as it was originally built as a console application that ran fine. Other The application has to be designed this way (as in, I need my data stored as XML, and my settings stored in a config file). Thoughts If I could somehow combine the contents of the two files into ONE config file, that would be one way of solving the problem. However, I have tried this and of course I get a "Type Initialisation Exception", as the config file cannot interprate the XML data (probably because the tags are custom and do not form any part of the config schema - or something like that). Ideas Please could someone explain to me if it is possible for me to have an XML file AND a config file that will actually be compiled and stored in my installation directory for the service when it is run? • Custom Filter Problem?

  Hi guys, how can I create a .XLS document from a mySQL table using PHP? I have tried just about everything, with no success. • Forcing a transaction to rollback on validation errors in Seam

  Quick version: We're looking for a way to force a transaction to rollback when specific situations occur during the execution of a method on a backing bean but we'd like the rollback to happen without having to show the user a generic 500 error page. Instead, we'd like the user to see the form she just submitted and a FacesMessage that indicates what the problem was. Long version: We've got a few backing beans that use components to perform a few related operations in the database (using JPA/Hibernate). During the process, an error can occur after some of the database operations have happened. This could be for a few different reasons but for this question, let's assume there's been a validation error that is detected after some DB writes have happened that weren't detectible before the writes occurred. When this happens, we'd like to make sure all of the db changes up to this point will be rolled back. Seam can deal with this because if you throw a RuntimeException out of the current FacesRequest, Seam will rollback the current transaction. The problem with this is that the user is shown a generic error page. In our case, we'd actually like the user to be shown the page she was on with a descriptive message about what went wrong, and have the opportunity to correct the bad input that caused the problem. The solution we've come up with is to throw an Exception from the component that discovers the validation problem with the annotation: @ApplicationException( rollback = true ) Then our backing bean can catch this exception, assume the component that threw it has published the appropriate FacesMessage, and simply return null to take the user back to the input page with the error displayed. The ApplicationException annotation tells Seam to rollback the transaction and we're not showing the user a generic error page. This worked well for the first place we used it that happened to only be doing inserts. The second place we tried to use it, we have to delete something during the process. In this second case, everything works if there's no validation error. If a validation error does happen, the rollback Exception is thrown and the transaction is marked for rollback. Even if no database modifications have happened to be rolled back, when the user fixes the bad data and re-submits the page, we're getting: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Removing a detached instance The detached instance is lazily loaded from another object (there's a many to one relationship). That parent object is loaded when the backing bean is instantiated. Because the transaction was rolled back after the validation error, the object is now detached. Our next step was to change this page from conversation scope to page scope. When we did this, Seam can't even render the page after the validation error because our page has to hit the DB to render and the transaction has been marked for rollback. So my question is: how are other people dealing with handling errors cleanly and properly managing transactions at the same time? Better yet, I'd love to be able to use everything we have now if someone can spot something I'm doing wrong that would be relatively easy to fix. I've read the Seam Framework article on Unified error page and exception handling but this is geared more towards more generic errors your application might encounter.

• Delphi 5: Ideas for simulating "Obsolete" or "Deprecated" methods?

  i want to mark a method as obsolete, but Delphi 5 doesn't have such a feature. For the sake of an example, here is a made-up method with it's deprecated and new preferred form: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; overload; //obsolete procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn(UseProtection: Boolean); overload; Note: For this hypothetical example, we assume that using the parameterless version is just plain bad. There are problems with not "using protection" - which have no good solution. Nobody likes having to use protection, but nobody wants to not use protection. So we make the caller decide if they want to use protection or not when blowing Hodir's horn. If we default the parameterless version to continue not using protection: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; begin BlowHodirsHorn(False); //No protection. Bad! end; then the developer is at risk of all kinds of nasty stuff. If we force the parameterless version to use protection: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; begin BlowHodirsHorn(True); //Use protection; crash if there isn't any end; then there's a potential for problems if the developer didn't get any protection, or doesn't own any. Now i could rename the obsolete method: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn_Deprecatedd; overload; //obsolete procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn(UseProtection: Boolean); overload; But that will cause a compile error, and people will bitch at me (and i really don't want to hear their whining). i want them to get a nag, rather than an actual error. i thought about adding an assertion: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete begin Assert(false, 'TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn is deprecated. Use BlowHodirsHorn(Boolean)'); ... end; But i cannot guarantee that the developer won't ship a version without assertions, causing a nasty crash for the customer. i thought about using only throwing an assertion if the developer is debugging: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete begin if DebugHook > 0 then Assert(false, 'TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn is deprecated. Use BlowHodirsHorn(Boolean)'); ... end; But i really don't want to be causing a crash at all. i thought of showing a MessageDlg if they're in the debugger (which is a technique i've done in the past): procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete begin if DebugHook > 0 then MessageDlg('TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn is deprecated. Use BlowHodirsHorn(Boolean)', mtWarning, [mbOk], 0); ... end; but that is still too disruptive. And it has caused problems where the code is stuck at showing a modal dialog, but the dialog box wasn't obviously visible. i was hoping for some sort of warning message that will sit there nagging them - until they gouge their eyes out and finally change their code. i thought perhaps if i added an unused variable: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete var ThisMethodIsObsolete: Boolean; begin ... end; i was hoping this would cause a hint only if someone referenced the code. But Delphi shows a hint even if you don't call actually use the obsolete method. Can anyone think of anything else?

  Hey All, Sorry for reposting(Admins, please delete the other one!). since you guys have been a great help, I was kinda hoping that you could help me once again while having the following question: I am currently trying to work with AJAX by allowing a managerclass in PHP to communicate via an XmlHttpobject with the javascript on the clientside. However, I can send something to the client via JSON, but I cannot read it at the clientside. In fact I am getting the error that the "time" is an undefined index in Session. So I was wondering: what am I doing wrong?   Spending hours fixing my function.php page and all seemed well, except Im getting errors on my rss feed at: blog.xternalit.co.uk. I leave that issue to rest and installed wordpress iphone app. The connection to my blog works perfect with wordpress' default theme. Ha! But it keeps making me resetting my password. So hell with that. Switched back to my theme and I cant connect from app to blog.   I'm trying to programmatically invoke an onclick event however the click is not received/handled. Am I missing something, or is security preventing the click to be executed? I have a forms application which is invisible. Basically I would like to say: DoDoubleClick(wait, x, y) This should raise two click (mousedown+mouseup) events on screen with the specified wait interval. However the click isn't received in a Flash application in Firefox (which is running at that moment).   Hi All, I am stuck in a big problem with encoding in my website! I use spring 3, tomcat 6, and mysql db. So, here's the list of problems I have: By default the messages.properties (Czech) should load, instead the messages_en.properties loads by default. In the web form, when I enter Czech data, then click submit, in the Controller I print out the data in the console before to save it to db, what's being printed is not correct having strange chars, and this is the exact data that saves to db. I don't know where's the mistake! Why can't I get it working although I did what people did and worked for them! don't know.. Please help me, I am stuck in this crappy problem since days, and it drives me crazy! Thank you in advance.

• Java multiple class compositing and boiler plate reduction

  We all know why Java does/should not have multiple inheritance. So this is not questioning about what has already been debated till-cows-come-home. This discusses what we would do when we wish to create a class that has the characteristics of two or more other classes. Probably, most of us would do this to "inherit" from three classes. For simplicity, I left out the constructor.: class Car extends Vehicle { final public Transport transport; final public Machine machine; } So that, Car class directly inherits methods and objects of Vehicle class, but would have to refer to transport and machine explicitly to refer to objects instantiated in Transport and Machine. Car car = new Car(); car.drive(); // from Vehicle car.transport.isAmphibious(); // from Transport car.machine.getCO2Footprint(); // from Machine I thought this was a good idea until when I encounter frameworks that require setter and getter methods. For example, the XML <Car amphibious='false' footPrint='1000' model='Fordstatic999'/> would look for the methods setAmphibious(..), setFootPrint(..) and setModel(..). Wouldn't it be nice if there exists some form of annotation framework that is like this: class Car extends Vehicle @projects {Transport @projects{Machine @projects Guzzler}} { /* No need to explicitly instantiate Transport, Machine or Guzzler */ .... } Where, in case of common names of characteristics exist, the characteristics of Machine would take precedence Guzzler's, and Transport's would have precedence over Machine's, and Vehicle's would have precedence over Transport's. The annotation framework would then instantiate Transport, Machine and Guzzler as hidden members of Car and expand to break-out the protected/public characteristics, in the precedence dictated by the @project annotation sequence, into actual source code or into byte-code. Preferably into byte-code. So that the setFootPrint method is found in both Machine and Guzzler, only that of Machine's would be projected. Questions: Don't you think this is a good idea to have such a framework? Does such a framework already exist? Tell me where/what. Is there an eclipse plugin that does it? Is there a proposal or plan anywhere that you know about such an annotation framework? It would be wonderful too, if the annotation/plugin framework lets me specify that boolean, int, or whatever else needs to be converted from String and does the conversion/parsing for me too. • Looking for best practise for writing a serial device communication app

  I am pretty new to serial comms, but would like advise on how to best achieve a robust application which speak to and listens to a serial device. I have managed to make use of System.IO.SerialPort, and successfully connected to, sent data to and recieved from my device. The way things work is this. My application connects to the Com Port and opens the port.... I then connect my device to the com port, and it detects a connection to the PC, so sends a bit of text. it's really just copyright info, as well as the version of the firmware. I don't do anything with that, except display it in my 'activity' window. The device then waits. I can then query information, but sending a command such as 'QUERY PARAMETER1'. It then replies with something like: 'QUERY PARAMETER1\r\n\r\n76767\r\n\r\n' I then process that. I can then update it by sending 'SET PARAMETER1 12345', and it will reply with 'QUERY PARAMETER1\r\n\r\n12345\r\n\r\n'. All pretty basic. So, what I have done is created a Communication Class. this call is called in it's own thread, and sends data back to the main form... and also allows me to send messages to it. Sending data is easy. Recieving is a bit more tricky. I have employed the use of the datarecieved event, and when ever data comes in, I echo that to my screen. My problem is this: When I send a command, I feel I am being very dodgy in my handling. What I am doing is, lets say I am sending 'QUERY PARAMETER1'. I send the command to the device, I then put 'PARAMETER1' into a global variable, and I do a Thread.Sleep(100). On the data received, I then have a bit of logic that checks the incoming data, and sees if the string CONTAINS the value in the global variable. As the reply may be 'QUERY PARAMETER1\r\n\r\n76767\r\n\r\n', it sees that it contains my parameter, parses the string, and returns the value I am looking for, but placing it into another global variable. My sending method was sleeping for 100ms. It then wakes, and checks the returned global variable. If it has data... then I'm happy, and I process the data. Problem is... if the sleep is too short.. it will fail. And I feel it's flaky.. putting stuff into variables.. then waiting... The other option is to use ReadLine instead, but that's very blocking. So I remove the data received method, and instead... just send the data... then call ReadLine(). That may give me better results. There's no time, except when we connect initially, that data comes from the device, without me requesting it. So, maybe ReadLine will be simpler and safer? Is this known as 'Blocking' reads? Also, can I set a timeout? Hopefully someone can guide me.

• Add options to select box without Internet Explorer closing the box?

  Hi, I'm trying to build a web page with a number of drop-down select boxes that load their options asynchronously when the box is first opened. This works very well under Firefox, but not under Internet Explorer. Below is a small example of what I'm trying to achieve. Basically, there is a select box (with the id "selectBox"), which contains just one option ("Any"). So that's exactly what Firefox does, which is great. However, in Internet Explorer, as soon as the new option is added in "4" the browser closes the select box. The select box does contain the correct options, but the box is closed, requiring the user to click to re-open it. So, does anyone have any suggestions for how I can load the select control's options asynchronously without IE closing the drop-down box? I know that I can load the list before the box is even clicked, but the real form I'm developing contains many such select boxes, which are all interrelated, so it will be much better for both the client and server if I can load each set of options only when needed. Also, if the results are loaded synchronously, before the select box's onmousedown handler completes, then IE will show the full list as expected - however, synchronous loading is a bad idea here, since it will completely "lock" the browser while the network requests are taking place. Finally, I've also tried using IE's click() method to open the select box once the new options have been added, but that does not re-open the select box. • When should I use indexed arrays of OpenGL vertices?

  I'm trying to get a clear idea of when I should be using indexed arrays of OpenGL vertices, drawn with gl[Multi]DrawElements and the like, versus when I should simply use contiguous arrays of vertices, drawn with gl[Multi]DrawArrays. (Update: The consensus in the replies I got is that one should always be using indexed vertices.) I have gone back and forth on this issue several times, so I'm going to outline my current understanding, in the hopes someone can either tell me I'm now finally more or less correct, or else point out where my remaining misunderstandings are. Specifically, I have three conclusions, in bold. Please correct them if they are wrong. One simple case is if my geometry consists of meshes to form curved surfaces. In this case, the vertices in the middle of the mesh will have identical attributes (position, normal, color, texture coord, etc) for every triangle which uses the vertex. This leads me to conclude that: 1. For geometry with few seams, indexed arrays are a big win. Follow rule 1 always, except: For geometry that is very 'blocky', in which every edge represents a seam, the benefit of indexed arrays is less obvious. To take a simple cube as an example, although each vertex is used in three different faces, we can't share vertices between them, because for a single vertex, the surface normals (and possible other things, like color and texture co-ord) will differ on each face. Hence we need to explicitly introduce redundant vertex positions into our array, so that the same position can be used several times with different normals, etc. This means that indexed arrays are of less use. e.g. When rendering a single face of a cube: 0 1 o---o |\ | | \ | | \| o---o 3 2 (this can be considered in isolation, because the seams between this face and all adjacent faces mean than none of these vertices can be shared between faces) if rendering using GL_TRIANGLE_FAN (or _STRIP), then each face of the cube can be rendered thus: verts = [v0, v1, v2, v3] colors = [c0, c0, c0, c0] normal = [n0, n0, n0, n0] Adding indices does not allow us to simplify this. From this I conclude that: 2. When rendering geometry which is all seams or mostly seams, when using GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP or _FAN, then I should never use indexed arrays, and should instead always use gl[Multi]DrawArrays. (Update: Replies indicate that this conclusion is wrong. Even though indices don't allow us to reduce the size of the arrays here, they should still be used because of other performance benefits, as discussed in the comments) The only exception to rule 2 is: When using GL_TRIANGLES (instead of strips or fans), then half of the vertices can still be re-used twice, with identical normals and colors, etc, because each cube face is rendered as two separate triangles. Again, for the same single cube face: 0 1 o---o |\ | | \ | | \| o---o 3 2 Without indices, using GL_TRIANGLES, the arrays would be something like: verts = [v0, v1, v2, v2, v3, v0] normals = [n0, n0, n0, n0, n0, n0] colors = [c0, c0, c0, c0, c0, c0] Since a vertex and a normal are often 3 floats each, and a color is often 3 bytes, that gives, for each cube face, about: verts = 6 * 3 floats = 18 floats normals = 6 * 3 floats = 18 floats colors = 6 * 3 bytes = 18 bytes = 36 floats and 18 bytes per cube face. (I understand the number of bytes might change if different types are used, the exact figures are just for illustration.) With indices, we can simplify this a little, giving: verts = [v0, v1, v2, v3] (4 * 3 = 12 floats) normals = [n0, n0, n0, n0] (4 * 3 = 12 floats) colors = [c0, c0, c0, c0] (4 * 3 = 12 bytes) indices = [0, 1, 2, 2, 3, 0] (6 shorts) = 24 floats + 12 bytes, and maybe 6 shorts, per cube face. See how in the latter case, vertices 0 and 2 are used twice, but only represented once in each of the verts, normals and colors arrays. This sounds like a small win for using indices, even in the extreme case of every single geometry edge being a seam. This leads me to conclude that: 3. When using GL_TRIANGLES, one should always use indexed arrays, even for geometry which is all seams. Please correct my conclusions in bold if they are wrong.

  Hi guys I have a banner rotator on my main page and it was working but it has stopped. All I have done before it stopped was modified some of the db fields. I added to fields position and company and deleted the field 'description.' • Generics and Performance question.

  Hey Everyone, I was wondering if anyone could look over a class I wrote, I am receiving generic warnings in Eclipse and I am just wondering if it could be cleaned up at all. All of the warnings I received are surrounded in ** in my code below. The class takes a list of strings in the form of (hh:mm AM/PM) and converts them into HourMinute objects in order to find the first time in the list that comes after the current time. I am also curious about if there are more efficient ways to do this. • Need help displaying a dynamic table

  I am designing a job rota planner for a company and need help displaying a dynamic table containing the staff details. I have the following tables in MySQL database: Staff, Event, and Job. The staff table holds staff details (staffed, name, address...etc), the Event table (eventide, eventName, Fromdate, Todate...etc) and the Job table holds (Jobid, Jobdate, Eventid(fk), Staffid (fk)). I need to dynamically display the available staff list from the staff table when the user selects the EVENT and the DATE (3 drop downs: date, month, and year) from a PHP form. I need to display staff members that have not been assigned work on the selected date by checking the Jobdate in the Job table. I have been at this for all day and can't get around it. I am still learning PHP and would surely appreciate any help I can get.
