• What Application Indicators are available?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using the Unity interface. Unity is working quite well so far but I really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets are useful for viewing quick info. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get this info onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know one then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found.

  I am running Ubuntu 13.04 in a Live (USB) session. My physical keyboard layout is called Bépo, it is the French language Dvorak method-based layout. I would like to change my input layout to this too. To do this, I tried booting in a French spoken session, then open the Keyboard Layout preferences app. Normally, to add a layout, you should click on the + sign and select your layout. However the list that appears is very short and does not contain what I want. On the contrary, on a persistent non-live installation, the choice of Bépo is present. This is also the case during an installation of Ubuntu. So I do I change the keyboard layout of my live session to the correct one?

• Hidden text and links appearing just on click for SEO?

  I am working on a site that has neat clean/minimalistic design/layout. Menu items are "hidden" behind an icon, to see them, users need to click on that icon to get a javascript toggled overlay with the list of menu items. Then there are blocks with photos and users need to click on a small icon/button on each of them to get a block of text shown for each of the photo. While I don't like such "design" myself, making me click lots of time just to read, I also think that for SEO purpose this model is really wrong. Is such model bad for SEO? Are there ways to keep design like this but have "safe" methods of displaying text content on click that will not hurt SEO?

  I'm just an average Joe when it comes to computing (maybe less then the average Joe) but I hate tap-to-click. In system and settings there is no touchpad tab? Is it true that this has been fixed? • On-board HDMI Audio

  I have tried searching for answers to this issue but have had no luck. My HDMI display is working but I have no audio from the HDMI .There is no option for HDMI under sound preferences hardware or output. Purging and re-installing pulse audio doesn't change anything. I am using the on-board HDMI port on my motherboard, I do not have a PCI graphics card installed. CPU: i7-3770 Mobo: Asus Sabertooth z77 Kernel: 2.6.39-3-bb03 running aplay -l returns ** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Seems as if the system doesn't even recognize the possibilty of HDMI audio output. • How can I really master a programming language?

  I know that learning a language, you can simply buy a book, follow the examples, and whenever possible try the exercises. But what I'm really looking is how to master the language once you've learned it. Now I know that experience is one major factor, but what about learning the internals of the language, what is the underlying structure, etc. There are articles out there saying read this book, read that book, make this game and that game. But to me this doesn't mean to master a language. I want to be able to read other people's code and understand it, no matter how hard that is. To understand when to use a function and when another, etc etc. The list could go on and on but I believe I've made the point. :) And finally, take whatever language as an example if needed, though best would be if C was taken as an example.

• 12.04 sound keeps auto-muting when idle

  I just installed 12.04 on an HP8510W. Everything works fine except for one weird behavior which I have noticed. When ever there is no audio playing, the audio mute indicator on the laptop is on. As soon as I start playing a you tube video the mute indicator turns off and I get sound. Here is my pulse audio output which says that the sink is suspended because it is idle: Welcome to PulseAudio! For each language, indicate the length in lines of the longest working program you have written in that language. You may approximate, but only count those parts of the program that you wrote yourself. I don't quite remember that, and I have never counted the lines of each program. Do programmers always know approximately how many lines in each of his programs, and keep record of them? What is the relation between " lines of the longest working program " in a language and familiarity with it? Typically, how many lines will indicate the programmer being excellent, good, fair, or unfamiliar with the language? Is knowing "lines of the longest working program" really helpful?

• Comparing my version with the clean install

  I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since the version 9. Of course, I have 13.04 now and after installing a clean 13.04 to another computer, I've noticed quite a few differences (plymouth, lightdm, some software behaves differently, etc.). I've done quite a few customizations during the period so it's probably due to that. So I wonder if there is a way to see what's different between my and the clean version. Not the complete file list diff, but perhaps software package differences (synaptic?) or something that will be easier to read and compare. Is there a way?

  Which languages have compilers able to emit plain standard C/C++ code? For a start: Haxe // uses Boehm GC Haskell (JHC) Haskell (old GHC) // -fvia-c, removed recently (emitted code is super ugly) Clay ATS Cython RPython (Shed Skin) // experimental RPython (PyPy) Python (Nuitka) // although author claims there are no speedups Common Lisp (ECL) COBOL (OpenCobol) Scheme (Chicken) APL // So far I've not found working implementation available for free download Ur/Web // GCC-specific output, and intended to be used only for web developments (included for completeness only) I'd like to build comprehensive up-to-date list but found only these ones so far. I've tested only Haxe and it works pretty well and quite fast. What about other ones? What is your expirience? How much ugly is generated code? Update. Any language chains (e.g. X - Scheme - C) will be perfectly OK as answer if its use is practical enough and suited for production use.

• Figuring out what object is closer to a certain point?

  I'm trying to create fog of war, I have the visual effect created but I'm not sure how to deal with the hiding of other players if they're within the fog of war. So right now the thing I'm trying to do is if another player is hiding behind a wall then not to render that player. I was thinking of doing it by sending a ray in the direction of all the players, and then creating a list of all the obstacles that ray collides with and then trying to figure out if an obstacle was closer than the player in order to predict the distance. But then I realized I'm not really sure how to figure out if the obstacle is infact closer or not because I have to account for all the dimensions, so I'm kind of stuck. First of all is this approach the correct way to go about it and secondly how would I calculate if the obstacle was infact closer taking into account the X Y and Z. Thanks

• Android device connects to my computer, but doesn't play audio over Bluetooth

  I turn on Bluetooth on both my devices and open up Music on my Android. I select a song to play, press the menu button, and tap "Via Bluetooth": I tap on my computer in the "Bluetooth Device Picker": Then it says, under the name of my computer: Connected to media audio Now I should technically be able to play music through my computer, since it "Just Worked" in Kubuntu with Blueman. But nope, something must be up with PulseAudio, because I hear no sound from my computer (I'm running Xubuntu 12.04). The reason I say this is that the devices list in Blueman shows indication of data transfer and it says it's connected, but in the PulseAudio Volume Control has no indication of my Bluetooth device (or Blueman) playing audio.

• How to cache on CloudFlare images that are served to client as JSON?

  I am using a gallery on my website that gets list of images from a JSON sent by a php script. So, the javascript gallery calls PHP backend and it replies with complex JSON where images are specified as object fields. These fields not necessarily include full URLs, merely a path to needed images. I'd like to use Cloudflare and want these images to be cached there. How I could learn whether these are cached or not, and make sure that these would be cached and not considered some sort of dynamic content?

• I try install dhcp3-server, but /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server file is missing. Whats going on?

  I've found several how-to's that essentially go through the same process in setting up DHCP. Here's a link that has the list of step needed install and setup DHCP. I follow all the steps and find that the sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart portion returns command not found only to reveal the the file doesn't even exist. I've installed (sudo apt-get install dhcp3-server) and uninstalled (sudo apt-get remove dhcp3-server) two or three times. I'm pretty sure my config files are good because I've had to check them three times. But I don't think I'm to that point of being able to see them action it. I cant control the process. Why is the file missing? How is it supposed to get there? Help?

• In a 2D tile-based game, how should NPCs and tiles reference each other?

  I'm making a tile engine for 2D games (seen from the top). Basically the world is composed of a grid of tiles. Now I want to put for instance NPCs that can move on the map. What do you think is best: 1) each tile has a pointer to the NPC that is on its tile, or a NULL pointer 2) having a list of NPCs, and they have the coordinates of the tile they are on. 3) something else? 1) is faster for collision detection but it would use much more memory space and it is slower to find all NPCs in a map. 2) is the opposite. thanks
