  • Did you forget me?

    I know it has been a long time since I last blogged. Still at it, looking for work in the “IT” field. Had another phone interview (only found out during the interview that it was for one year contract job, but I still would take it) for a Help Desk job. Didn’t get it, they thought I was not a application support person and more of a hardware support. Gee..I started out in “IT” as a programmer. Then a programmer/computer operator, then a Tandem/Lan operator and finally a Network operator. I had to deal with so many different operating systems, software and applications.   And they thought I was too hardware. Well I am working a temp day job with the U.S. Census. It gets me out of the house and out in the country. If find getting paid to check for living quarters not bad job, except for the many houses I find that are up for sale and looks like it was not the owners (former owners it seems) idea, with the kids toys still in the yards. Not good for some one with a over active imagine or for my truck. So far I have backed in to ditch (and had to be pulled out), in to power pole (no damage to pole and very little to truck) and a mail box (no damage to truck but mail box was leaning a little) in the last two weeks.   Oh an I have started reading/using “The Love Dare” book from the movie “Fireproof”. I restarted (yes I have had to go back to day one from day five) the dare this Sunday. Dare one dare/day one “Love Is Patient” and the first dare is (reading from the book is): “The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although Love is communicated in a number of ways. Our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to sys nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue that to say something you’ll regret. “. This was almost too easy as I can hold back from saying anything bad to any one but, this can also be a problem in life (you hold back for so long and!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   • How exactly are textures drawn on faces of cubes?

    Are they drawn from the lower left corner clockwise? I know how triangles are created, I'm not just sure if textures are the same way.   • Can't sync time between domain controller and another servers/computers (windows 2003)

    Good morning, We have domain controller on windows server 2003 and another windows 2003 servers with terminal server and DB and regular workstations. Today in Israel we returned back to winter time (one hour back), domain controller now shows current time but all another machines in network show different time they went two hour back and there's difference in one hour between domain controller and another machines. I have tried to perform W32tm /resync /update but without success, where can be problem? Thank you.

  • Commands don't have permission when using absolute path

    I have folders set up this way: /srv/samba/video getfacl /srv/samba/video # file: srv/samba/video # owner: root # group: nogroup user::rwx group::--- group:sambaclients:rwx group:deluge:rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:group::--- default:group:sambaclients:rwx default:group:deluge:rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- That means, user deluge has rwx to folder /srv/samba/video. However, when running command as user deluge, I am getting weird permission errors. When in folder /srv/samba/video: sudo -u deluge mkdir foo works flawlessly. But when using absolute path: sudo -u deluge mkdir /srv/samba/video/foo I am getting permission denied. When running sudo -u deluge id, I get output uid=113(deluge) gid=124(deluge) skupiny=124(deluge) which shows that user deluge is indeed in group deluge. Also, the behavior was the same when I gave the permissions also to user deluge not just group deluge. When executing as non-system user, it does work. The reason that I want to use absolute paths is that I am using automatically triggered post-download script which extracts some files into the folder. I have spent way too many hours to solve this problem myself. mkdir isn't the only command that fails, touch is doing the same thing, so I suspect that it's not mkdir's fault. If you need more info, I will try to put it in here, just ask. Thanx in advance. Edit: It seems that the root of the problem is acl set on perent folder /srv/samba, which indeed does not grant permissions to deluge (but neither denies it). getfacl /srv/samba # file: srv/samba # owner: root # group: nogroup user::rwx group::--- group:sambaclients:rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:group::--- default:group:sambaclients:rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- If I grant the permission also to this folder, it suddenly starts to work so I believe that the acl on /srv/samba is somehow denying the permissions to deluge. So the question is: how do I set acl to both /srv/samba and /srv/samba/video so that sambaclients have access to whole /srv/samba and subdirectories and deluge has access only to /srv/samba/video and subdirectories?

I'm a total newb at Oracle so any help will be appreciated. Googled this for hours and still can't come up with a solution. Thanks!

  • How to disable an ASP.NET linkbutton when clicked

    Scenario: User clicks a LinkButton in your ASP.NET page and you want to disable it immediately using javascript so that the user cannot accidentally click it again.  I wrote about disabling a regular submit button here: How to disable an ASP.NET button when clicked.  But the method described in the other blog post does not work for disabling a LinkButton.  This is because the Post Back Event Reference is called using a snippet of javascript from within the href of the anchor tag: <a id="MyContrl_MyButton" href="javascript:__doPostBack('MyContrl$MyButton','')">My Button</a> If you try to add an onclick event to disable the button, even though the button will become disabled, the href will still be allowed to be clicked multiple times (causing duplicate form submissions).  To get around this, in addition to disabling the button in the onclick javascript, you can set the href to “#” to prevent it from doing anything on the page.  You can add this to the LinkButton from your code behind like this: MyButton.Attributes.Add("onclick", "this.href='#';this.disabled=true;" + Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(MyButton, "").ToString()); This code adds javascript to set the href to “#” and then disable the button in the onclick event of the LinkButton by appending to the Attributes collection of the ASP.NET LinkButton control.  Then the Post Back Event Reference for the button is called right after disabling the button.  Make sure you add the Post Back Event Reference to the onclick because now that you are changing the anchor href, the button still needs to perform the original postback. With the code above now the button onclick event will look something like this: onclick="this.href='#';this.disabled=true;__doPostBack('MyContrl$MyButton','');" The anchor href is set to “#”, the linkbutton is disabled, AND then the button post back method is called.   • Bluetooth mouse Logitech M555b not recognized on a Macbook Pro 8.2

    I just bought a Logitech M555b Bluetooth mouse today. My computer (a Macbook Pro 8,2) has a bluetooth connection, and it works perfectly fine on Mac OSX (I set up a new device, click the connect button on the mouse, and voilà, done in 5 seconds). I cannot get it to work on Ubuntu 12.04. When I follow the same steps as on Mac OSX under Ubuntu 12.04, Sometimes I will see the mouse name appearing for 1 second on the screen, and if I'm fast enough to click on "Continue", I will have a message telling me the pairing with my mouse failed. Here are the steps I follow: Turn off Bluetooth on Ubuntu Turn Bluetooth on. Bluetooth icon Set up new device... Turn on the mouse, and press the Connect button. Press "Continue" on the Bluetooth New Device Setup screen I see the mouse name for one second, but then it disappear. Click on PIN options... to select '0000'. ... nothing, Ubuntu won't see anything. How can I get the Bluetooth to work properly? Help!

  • Recommended total system backup solution

    I hope this question won't get closed immediately since it has a generic title. I already searched a bit around the answers here, but nothing satisfied me. I want a back-up solution that makes a total back-up, so that I can restore my Ubuntu in case of major failures, like HDD failing. As far as I can see, I have 2 choices: 1) Backing up with Deja Dup to an external disk. This is fine and I am already doing, but in case my HDD fails, and I make a new Ubuntu install on a new disk, will Deja Dup be able to restore all my setting and stuff from the backed up files? If it can, then what other files/folders should I add in Deja Dup to back-up (currently I have set only the recommended /home folder)? Is there a point in telling Deja Dup to back-up everything under "/" ? 2) A disk/partition cloning software. This would be something similar to Noton ghost. Is there such a software with nice GUI that you could recommend for Ubuntu? And even better, it would be nice if Ubuntu's liveCD could recognize such a clone at install step. I am using 11.10

  • Office design and layout for agile development

    (moved from stackoverflow) I have found lot of discussions here on about which keyboard, desk, light or colored background is best - but I can't find one addressing the layout of the whole office. We are a company with about 20 employees moving to a new place, something larger. There are two main development practices going on here with regular combination, the back end people often needing to work with the mobile people to arrange web services. There are about twice as many back end people as mobile people. About half of the back end developers are working on-site at any time and while they are almost never all in the office at once at least 5-10 spaces need to be provided - so most of the time the two groups are about equal. We have the chance to arrange desks, partitions and possibly even walls to make the space good. There won't be cash for dot-com frills like catering or massages but now's the time to be planning to avoid ending up with a bunch of desks in a long line. Joel on Software's Bionic Office is an article I've remembered from way back and it has some good ideas but I* (and more importantly the company's owners) are not completely sold on the privacy idea in an environment where we are supposed to be collaborating. This is another great link - The Ultimate Software Development Office Layout - I hadn't even remembered enclosed meeting rooms until reading this. Does the private office stand in the way of agile development? Is the scrum enough forced contact and if you need to bug someone you should need to get up and knock on their door? What design layouts can you point to and why would you recommend them? *I'm not against closed offices at all but would be happy if some other solution can do just as well. If it can't... well, that's what this question is all about.

    This blog has been pretty quiet for a year now. There's a few reasons for that. Probably the biggest reason is that I view this as a space where I talk about .NET things. Or software development. While I've been doing the latter for the past year, I haven't been doing the former.Yes, I took a trip to the dark side. I started with Ning 11 months ago, in Palo Alto, CA. I had the chance to work with an incredibly talented group of software engineers... in PHP and Java.That was definitely an eye-opening experience, in terms of technology, process, and culture. It was also a pretty good example of how acquisitions can get interesting. I'll talk more about this, I'm sure.Last week, I started with a company called Dynamic Signal. I'm a "Back End Engineer" now. Also a very talented team of people, and I'm delighted to be working with them. We're a Microsoft shop. After a year away, I'm very happy to be back. Coming back to .NET is an easy transition, and one that has me being fairly productive straight out of the gate.(Some of you may have noticed, my last post was more than a year ago. Yes, it's safe to infer that I didn't get renewed as an MVP. Fair deal; I didn't do nearly as much this year as I have in the past. I'll be starting to speak again shortly, and hope to be re-awarded soon.)At any rate, now that I'm back in the .NET space, you can expect to hear more from me soon!

  • What was your biggest waste of money, and what should you have bought instead? [closed]

    I waste a lot of money on computer equipment and other electronics that I don't really need. I've also bought software that I've never really used, or which as been replaced by better free software. As I'm buying things, it doesn't seem like much--fifty bucks here, a hundred dollars there. But when I go back and look at how much I've spent over my past few electronics purchases, I usually start to think of the other things I could have bought with that money instead. Most of the computer hardware and electronics don't usually improve my life by much, if at all. Case in point: back when I was in college, I prided myself on getting the best deals for computer hardware, but when I went back and added up all the money I had spent, I had probably wasted close to a thousand dollars on "cheap" $100 hard drives that eventually all went bad (including the warranty replacements). Even if they did still work, it would not be worth the effort to use them, because they're too small and too noisy by today's standards. I've also spent thousands more on other junk, such as RAM and CPU upgrades that only gave modest performance jumps, and wireless audio transmitters that I used for a short time to stream music from the now-defunct Yahoo! Music service. Every time I see a really great deal on RAM or video cards, I come one click away from buying them, but these days I'm usually able to resist. I've been wanting to get into woodworking ever since I moved into my house, and five years later I'm finally saving up for a $600 table saw. Sure, I've already got a toolbox and a couple of the essential power tools like a drill and a jigsaw, but I can't help but think that I'd have an entire shop full of woodworking tools and a lot of nice wood furniture if I hadn't wasted all that money back in college. What has been your biggest waste of money on computer stuff and technology? If you had all that money back, would you make the same mistake again and buy the same types of things, or would you spend it on something else?

  • Wrong faces culled in OpenGL when drawing a rectangular prism

    I'm trying to learn opengl. I did some code for building a rectangular prism. I don't want to draw back faces so I used glCullFace(GL_BACK), glEnable(GL_CULL_FACE);. But I keep getting back faces also when viewing from front and also sometimes when rotating sides are vanishing.     Hey folks~ Today was one of the most happening day for us, we got up @ 5 AM and did our daily morning chores and left hostel room by 5:35 AM. So why we got up so early??? Okay we planned a visit to Kali Temple at KaliGhat! So till everyone assembles, we took few pics on the Lake Deck. We left Joka campus at 6 AM and reached Kali temple at 6:50 AM. Kali temple is very famous in Kolkata, but the frankly speaking it’s one of the most unorganised one for sure~! After darshan, we got back into our Taxis and headed for breakfast at Gupta Brothers Restaurant. We enjoyed “doodh-jalebi”, “Kachori-sabzi” and rasogullas there~! While coming back, one of our Taxi’s excel broken and we waited for the first to come back and take us to Campus. After coming back to campus, we attended our sessions on IS & Strategy on ITC eChaupal and Transactional Cost and Vertical Integration(TCVI). After our classed we had “Dinner Party” organised by IIMC, and we enjoyed it thoroughly, and many of us took this as an opportunity to share our biz card and talk to Professors.   • Cable management between multiple racks

    I am in the planning phase of re-cabling our 5 racks in one of our offices and I would like to ask for some guidance on how you go, or would go about managing cables that goes between racks. In our situation we have 5 racks where the furthest to the right is our main patch panel for 300 floor ports. The rack next to it is our main comms rack where main switches and ISP routers are located. the other 3 racks next to the comms rack then all need to connect back to the main comms rack. I am not sure if a 48 port patch panel in each rack would be any good for this scenario? mainly because i am not sure this can be linked back to the main switch with only 1 cable. Would a 48 port switch in each rack be better as you can uplink those back to main switch? Or should we just run cables between racks back to the main switch? Hope someone can offer some guidiance.   • How can I change my mysql user that has all privileges on a database to only have select privileges on one specific table?

    I gave my mysql user the "GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON database_name.* to my_user@localhost" treatment. Now I would like to be more granular, starting with lowering privileges on a specific table. I am hoping mysql has or can be set to follow a "least amount of privileges" policy, so I can keep the current setup and lower it for the one table. But I have not seen anything like this in the docs or online. Other than removing the DB level grant and re-granting on a table level, is there a way to get the same result by adding another rule?

  • Colored Vertical Lines upon boot and nomodeset DOES NOT fix it

    I have installed Lubuntu 13.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, rebooted the machine and encountered this problem. I edited the GRUB configuration to remove "quite splash" and enter "nomodeset", updated grub, and everything was fine. I could reboot the machine without any trouble. However, if I unplug the machine, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in, the problem with the colored lines comes back and nomodeset no longer helps to solve the problem. I tried using radeon.modeset=0 instead of nomodeset and that also works on multiple reboots until I unplug the machine and plug it back in. I was finally able to get around the problem by entering "radeon.exapixmaps=0" instead of radeon.modeset=0. I suppose I kind of made up that boot option using some information from an Arch Wiki page. This would work throughout reboots and even if I unplugged the laptop. It was working fine for quite a while. A few weeks later, I had some unrelated issues with the Java iced-tea plugin, and since 13.10 had just come out, I thought I would try upgrading. So upgrading didn't fix the problem with Java, and after unplugging the machine and trying to use it later, I was back to this problem with the black screen and colored vertical lines. I am completely out of ideas on what to try. It took me a week to figure out how to get it working the first time, but the solution I had isn't working anymore.

    I've made three snapshots on VirtualBox virtual machine (winxp). I want to go back to Snapshot 2. If I click on "Snapshot 2" and click Start, it goes back to the current state. I can click on "Current State" and "revert to current snapshot" (unclear: what is the "current snapshot", since I have 3 snapshots), but after it is finished, I can't discern what it did exactly and when I click start, it returns to the current state. How do I go back to Snapshot 2?

  • Click buttons on the mouse stopped working in 12.10

    everything was great for a couple weeks after the upgrade, and then all of a sudden, the click buttons on my trackpad (as well as any other USB mouse I would hook up) stopped working. The pointer moves fine, but the clicks don't work. Sometimes the left click doesn't work but right click does, and then some times, neither works. I noticed this would begin when I would accidentally drag some text in a web browser (you know how when you try to move your pointer through the trackpad, but you accidentally tap down and it starts to drag whatever text you've selected on the window), and then you're done. The clicks won't work after that. They would work upon rebooting or logging off and back on, but then after a few minutes of usage, things would go back to being broken again. It happened a LOT when I was trying to play Scrabble on Facebook. I've raised a bug for this, but I haven't heard back anything on it. Here's the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1077805 Since the system was unusable this way, I had to remove it and install another OS based on 12.04. Has anyone else faced this issue or does someone know what to do to fix it? I'd go back to vanilla Ubuntu in a heartbeat if this issue can be fixed.

    i just now start to use Xubuntu, and i install Xubuntu on my second laptop i had in my garage, just for put back in use. On the ASUS xubuntu work really perfect but now after i put on my old laptop i have some little proble. My Laptop old is a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO L7310GW, i explain my problem: The installation works fine, everything is quite good but there are few little problem i have a know idea, how I can fix them... so USB: i have a optical mouse usb and works quite strage, when i tip on terminal "lsusb" the system recognized fine my mouse but the strange thing is the mouse it move like jump around the desktop. what i had done: - update the usbdrive - change mouse - tried mouse on different pc and on both they work fine another problem i don't know where came from: when i take off my mouse, and try to put back doesn't work at all, if i want back i have to restart the OS. and no usb pen or other ar working so for that i think is usb problem. i can tell before Xubuntu whit winXP the usb work fine, but i don't want windows anymore... So i tried almost everything you can find on the net, maybe i have done something wrong so please help me. I tried also to install the new version 12.04, but i came back for the 11.10.

As per http://web2.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC%5FID=26907 I've tried all sorts of variations: C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant 'NT A uthority\NETWORK SERVICE: (OI) (CI)M' C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant "NETWORK SERVICE": (OI) (CI)M And all variations in between. However, each try leads to i.e. "Invalid parameter "'NETWORK'"" depending on the variation above. As per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753525%28WS.10%29.aspx (see in comments), it appears that others have experienced the same issue where the same command works on Windows 7/Vista/etc., but not on Windows Server 2008. What's the best way to apply permissions to Network Service account on a directory and/or files via the command line in Windows Server 2008? Especially as there's no way to do multiple file permissions at once via the GUI (see http://serverfault.com/questions/30991/windows-server-2008-change-security-settings-for-multiple-files-at-once).
