• Vdpau performance in Precise with Unity 3d

  vdpau seems to be broken in Precise under Unity 3d. CPU usage ranges around 50-70% for 1080p movies while same movies utilizes around 5-10% in Natty with vdpau enabled (under Unity3d) The card is Nvidia G105m. It doesn't seem to be a Nvidia driver problem because in gnome-shell everything works as expected and I have tried different versions of Nvidia drivers (295.20, 295.33, 295.40 and the latest 302.XX from xorg-edgers) The results are all the same, works in Gnome Shell but not in Unity 3d. Disabling syn to vbank works if movie is not in full screen mode, but it doesn't work for full screen. I have searched around and haven't found much info. I am wondering if others are experiencing the same problem and if there are some known work around that I have missed. Unity 3d is otherwise very nice in Precise, but this is a show stopping issue for me (literally). Thanks. I have filed a bug here https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/993397

• RadBook for Silverlight now supports virtualization

  I am proud to announce that RadBook, along with RadGridView, RadTreeView, RadTreeListView, RadChart and RadScheduler, now supports virtualization. With previous versions, it would take up to 16 seconds to load 1000 pages, where now it takes just 2 seconds to load a set of 10,000,000 (10 million) items.   The cause of the performance boost is the way RadBook handles the unnecessary(non-visible) elements. As you probably know, while turning a page, only four pages are visible at any given moment in time. Previous versions of RadBook would just collapse the unnecessary elements, which had a significant impact on the initial loading time. The new version of RadBook now takes advantage of the VirutalizingPanel and creates only as many elements as necessary for the book to render properly. • All day optimizer event....

• BizTalk 2009 - Project Creation Failed

  A couple of weeks ago I had some issue with my BizTalk Server 2009 development environment  which resulted in a reinstall of Visual Studio 2008 and the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Following this reinstall I began to have problems when trying to create  BizTalk 2009 projects: Error Details: “Create BizTalk Project …. Project Creation Failed” It turns out that this is a known issue with BizTalk Server 2009 and Visual Studio 2008, whereby the installation of the Visual Studio Service Pack 1 can cause corruption to the BizTalk installation preventing the creation of any new projects. To resolve this issue go to control panel > add or remove programs > Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009 and select Change or Remove.  When the window opens choose “Repair”.  Upon completion you should once again be able to create BizTalk projects.

  Recently I installed Google Analytics on a Blogger account. I was shocked when I saw load times for the landing pages between 10 and 60 seconds. The blog uses Facebook like-box, twitter recent messages box, live traffic feed widget and Lockerz share buttons. Almost every post in this blog contains YouTube iframes which aren't nowhere near fast. Are there any well-known solutions for this type of problems? Should I use some jQuery plugins for speed optimization, how can I make the facebook/twitter boxes load faster?

• Tales of a corrupt SQL log

  Warning: Im a simple dev, not an all powerful DBA with godly powers. This morning, one of my sites was down and DNN reported a problem with the database.  A quick series of tests revealed that the culprit was a corrupted log file. • 3D BSP rendering for maps made in 2d platform style

  I wish to render a 3D map which is always seen from top, camera is in sky and always looking at earth. Sample of a floor layout: I don't think I need complex structures like BSP trees to render them. I mean I can divide the map in grids and render them like done in 2D platform games. I just want to know if this is a good idea and what may go wrong if I don't choose a BSP tree rendering here. Please also mention is any better known rendering techniques are available for such situations.

• Open GL Android frame-by-frame animation tutorial/example code

  My first question was asked wrong, so I need to ask again :) I found out, that I will have to do an OpenGL animation for my Android game. The closest (known) example is Talking Tom (but I don't know how they did the animations). I have large PNGs which I would like to put into a animation. For example - 30 PNGs 427×240px at 8 FPS. I know some things already about Open GL, but I am used to learn from example code. And it is quicker that way (so I don't need to invent hot water all over again :)). Does anybody has any points to direct me?

Examples of well-known and effective bug-reducing features are: Static typing and generic types: type incompatibility errors are detected by the compiler Design by Contract (TM), also called Contract Programming: invalid values are quickly detected at runtime (through preconditions, postconditions and class invariants) Unit testing I ask this question in the context of improving an object-oriented programming language (called Obix) which has been designed from the ground up to 'make it easy to quickly write reliable code'. Besides the features mentioned above this language also incorporates other Fail-fast features such as: Objects are immutable by default Void (null) values are not allowed by default The aim is to add more Fail-fast concepts to the language. I am currently looking at using Ekiga (formely known as GnomeMeeting) or Homer Conferencing (short: Homer). My plan is to "integrate" an existing Video Conferencing client into our existing software. Please give me recommendation on which 3rd party application or library to use to add video conferencing feature to our application. PS: Please don't close this question. • Learning to optimize with Assembly

  I am a second year student of Computer Games Technology. I recently finished my first prototype of my "kind" of own pathfinder (that doesn't use A* instead a geometrical approach/pattern recognition, the pathfinder just needs the knowledge about the terrain that is in his view to make decisions, because I wanted an AI that could actually explore, if the terrain is already known, then it will walk the shortest way easily, because the pathfinder has a memory of nodes). Anyway my question is more general: How do I start optimizing algorithms/loops/for_each/etc. using Assembly, although general tips are welcome. I am specifically looking for good books, because it is really hard to find good books on this topic. There are some small articles out there like this one, but still isn't enough knowledge to optimize an algorithm/game... I hope there is a modern good book out there, that I just couldn't find...

• Release build vs nightly build

  Hi! A typical solution is to have a CI (Continuous Integration) build running on a build server: It will analyze the source code, make build (in debug) and run tests, measure test coverage, etc. Now, another build type usually known is "Nightly build": do slow stuff like create code documents, make a setup package, deploy to test environment, and run automatic (smoke or acceptance) tests against the test environment, etc. Now, the question: Is it better to have a third separate "Release build" as release build? Or do "Nightly build" in release mode and use it as a release? What are you using in your company? (The release build should also add some kind of tag to source control of potential product version.)
