• Creating a DJVU file from scanned BMPs

  Recently I have been scanning some of my hand written notes. Each page ends up as a .bmp file (300 DPI A4). I wish to combine/compress these too a DJVU file for easy reading. Hence, Does anyone know of any programs/utilities for OS X/Linux that can do this. If so, what settings can be considered optimal (lined paper, some coloured ink used). Are there any practical means of tagging pages/regions (to create an outline).

• Installing Apache Lucene for LAMP server

  I have Ubuntu running for LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) server. To provide better search capability one of my friend recommended to install "Apache Lucene". While reading about it I came to know that "Apache Lucene" required tomcat and java to run. Please let me know if it be feasible to have it or there are other better alternates for LAMP stack. • Debian sound on hdmi instead of jack

  I installed debian (gnome) and i can't get my sound working. When i use inxi -A i get the following result: Audio: Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cayman/Antilles HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6900 Series] driver: snd_hda_intel Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) driver: snd_hda_intel Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: 1.0.24 My feeling tells me my sound output is on the HDMI instead of my jackplug on my motherboard. How can i change this to my motherboard sound output?

• Hyper-V/Ubuntu server 12.04 - VM does not stop

  i just installed a ubuntu 12.04 server on a 2008 R2 Hyper-V server and all is fine (networking/storage ...). There is just one thing, when i halt my linux (using "sudo halt"), i can see on the console that the system is halted but the vm status on hyper-v is still "started". Then i need to stop it on the hyper-v management tool. Anybody has an idea on how to properly stop this VM on hyper-V automatically ? Thanks, Alex

• Is it possible to detect Android and iOS devices based on DHCP requests?

  I want to configure DHCP server in a way that it puts "regular" smartphones and tablets into a separate subnet. Is it possible to detect if the DHCP request comes from an Android or iOS device based on the DHCP request itself? For example: a Sony android phone which was around set the following DHCP options in request, which are potentially useful for identification bootp.option.vendor_class_id == "dhcpcd-5.2.10:Linux-2.6.32.9-perf:armv7l:mogami" bootp.option.hostname == "android-c7d342d011ea6419" Are there any known common patterns in DHCP request options better then MAC prefix?

• What is the easiest way to scale a Quicktime MOV to a different size in Windows?

  I've tried a ffmpeg, and it doesn't know how to read Quicktime MOV, neither does VirtualDub. Avidemux crashes when I open the Quicktime MOV. In Linux, I'd just use MEncoder, but I'm telling someone over the phone how to resize this 1080p MOV file, so having them use MEncoder in a command shell would be annoying. Any ideas?

  I am using an open source application (conkeror) which is configured via a file containing javascript. Any issues with the javascript is printed to the console. This is fine under Linux as all the information is shown as long as the it is started from a shell. However, under Windows none of the information is show even when started from a shell. Is there a way to make this information displayed in the shell or to capture it in say a file?

• Emulate a VPN through ssh

  I have a Linux server running ubuntu 10.04 server. I would like to tunnel my iPhone traffic through this server using ssh, but that's not such an easy solution. Is there a way to simulate a VPN over ssh so that I can configure my iPhone to connect to this VPN and protect my traffic?   A Linux server running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with LAMP has a strange behaviour since last week: - cpu %sys higher than before, nearly equal %usr (before that, %sys just little compare with %usr) - IO reduce by half or 1/3 compare with the week before I try to diagnostic the process/cpu by some command (top/vmstat/mpstat/sar), and see that maybe it's a bit high on interrupt timer/resched. I don't know what that means, now open to any suggestion.

  There is a site that I need to monitor for changes and pop an alarm if the change is over a certain threshold. Ideally it would use Growl to pop the notification but I'm open to alternatives. If there is an application out there that does this for purchase, I'll just buy it.
