  • Is it a good plan to use 2D physics for a 3D racing game?

    - by user3195897
I am working on a 3D racing game using SDL and OpenGL. I thought it would be easier to use a 2D physics engine, since I really don't need the 3rd dimension. There will be no flying cars or jumps, they will just be stuck to the floor, so I would use 2D colliders and that things to simulate collisions in a plane but render the actual game from a 3D perspective. So the real question is: is it possible, is it a dumb idea, what else can I do?

  • Adding program booting options to the OS

    - by user113948
I am building a flight simulator box, off of Ubuntu 12.10, but I am trying to make the OS essentially invisible, I just want the machine to boot into the Flight Sim, which, that part isn't really that difficult, just a matter of adding a startup item, but I would like to make it a bit more seemless, and in-addtion to that, I would like maybe a 3-5 second countdown where you could opt-out of the flight sim from starting, if you need to troubleshoot the OS, or the flight sim itself, and I have no idea how that would be accomplished

  • How do I enable wireless on HP Pavilion dm1?

    - by Dikla
My wireless network is physically enabled and the "enable wireless" appears properly on the top menu, however checking it doesn't seem to have any affect. Anyone came across this problem? I have a new HP Pavilion dm1-4000, installed Ubuntu 11.10 yesterday. The wireless worked fine yesterday, today I've got nothing. It also seems to have problems with the wired connection, however I have no idea if it's related.

  • Why You Should Launch Your Own Web Directory

One of the easiest types of web sites to launch is a link directory. Just download one of the free or inexpensive PHP software packages, install, configure, add some categories, add some links and you're off! Having your own directory isn't a bad idea, despite what some pundits might think, for a number of reasons which I'll outline.

  • Fastest way to check if two square 2D arrays are rotationally and reflectively distinct

    - by kustrle
The best idea I have so far is to rotate first array by {0, 90, 180, 270} degrees and reflect it horizontally or/and vertically. We basically get 16 variations [1] of first array and compare them with second array. if none of them matches the two arrays are rotationally and reflectively distinct. I am wondering if there is more optimal solution than this brute-force approach? [1] 0deg, no reflection 0deg, reflect over x 0deg, reflect over y 0deg, reflect over x and y 90deg, no reflection ...

  • Is it OK to write a programming language in Jython? [closed]

    - by Christopher
I've been looking at the tools for writing a programming language and I had a bizarre idea. What If I wrote a full blown programming language in Jython? Is that a practical solution? Will distribution and bundling be a problem? Can that make or break the language's success? In other words, I'm asking if writing a programing language written in Jython is a practical solution for production enviroments?

  • 10 Things You Should Do After You Install WordPress

It's a good idea to go to your server and locate the WordPress instruction and installation file that is automatically uploaded with the WordPress software. • Will The Linux Desktop Soon Be Irrelevant?

<b>Linux Magazine:</b> "Some of us are still waiting for the year of the Linux desktop. Some think it&#8217;s already here. One thing is certain however, Linux does not have a majority desktop market share. By the time we get there, perhaps the entire idea of what a Desktop is will have been re-defined, thanks to &#8220;The Cloud&#8221;."

  • Outsourced Search Engine Optimization Saves Your Business Time and Money

Well, first of all, it's a good idea to realize that in-house employees are quite expensive to keep on the payroll-especially when it comes to expert level technical gurus-the kind of people that know SEO inside and out. Even though they still might help you make a profit through your search engine optimization efforts, just think of how much a year's worth of salary, benefits, and other additional employee costs will set you back here. The bottom line is it's just not cheap to have full-time SEO employees on staff.

  • STOP! Wrong Server!

    - by merrillaldrich
Some time ago I wrote a post about old-time T-SQL flow control . Part of the idea was to illustrate how to make scripts abort on errors, which is surprisingly convoluted in T-SQL. Today I have a more specific example: how can I check that we are really about to execute in the right database on the right server, and halt if not. Perhaps you’ve connected to the wrong server, or the database you intend to modify doesn’t have the name your script expected. “USE database” is wonderful, but what if it...(read more)
