  • Is locking on the requested object a bad idea?

    - by Quick Joe Smith
Most advice on thread safety involves some variation of the following pattern: public class Thing { private static readonly object padlock = new object(); private string stuff, andNonsense; public string Stuff { get { lock (Thing.padlock) { if (this.stuff == null) this.stuff = "Threadsafe!"; } return this.stuff; } } public string AndNonsense { get { lock (Thing.padlock) { if (this.andNonsense == null) this.andNonsense = "Also threadsafe!"; } return this.andNonsense; } } // Rest of class... } In cases where the get operations are expensive and unrelated, a single locking object is unsuitable because a call to Stuff would block all calls to AndNonsense, degrading performance. And rather than create a lock object for each call, wouldn't it be better to acquire the lock on the member itself (assuming it is not something that implements SyncRoot or somesuch for that purpose? For example: public string Stuff { get { lock (this.stuff) { // Pretend that this is a very expensive operation. if (this.stuff == null) this.stuff = "Still threadsafe and good?"; } return this.stuff; } } Strangely, I have never seen this approach recommended or warned against. Am I missing something obvious?

  • PHP - file uploads and ways to prevent viruses from being uploaded in zip/rar archives

    - by Joe
I am trying to provide a service on my website to allow users to upload files so others can download them. The issue is, since some of these files I will allow to upload will be .zip/.rar files, I am curious as to what ideas exist to help prevent the uploading of archives with Viruses/trojans etc. included. Some .zip files will include legitimate .exe files, though I am not sure what options I have. I thought about it and I don't have a method for verifying with a virus scanner on the server, since I am on shared hosting w/o the option to run a service like that... nor do I have the knowledge on how to do that. I am also aware there is no php class or database to scan the files for viruses. This means, my only options are to rely on: a). manual approval <-- not an acceptable option for me as it might become a busy site with thousands of uploads b). get the users to somehow point out it if has viruses through voting or "flagging", etc.... anyway, regarding "b" - what ideas would you suggest?

  • ModalPopupExtender doesn't work on IE6 frame layout

    - by Joe
I'm using a "frame" layout similar to the one in this excellent answer: a div #top at the top of the page, a div#left on the left, and a div #main with the main content. The #top and #left divs contain navigation menus. Now I want to use a popup div using the AjaxControlToolkit ModalPopupExtender inside the content (#main) div. This works fine on IE8 (where #top, #left, #main all have position:fixed), but when I run it on IE6, the modal background only covers the #main div - I need it to cover the whole of the page including the #top and #left navigation divs. Looking at the script for ModalPopupExtender, it appears to be searching up the parent hierarchy until it finds a parent with position relative or absolute. And in the IE6 rendering, the #main div has position:absolute because position:fixed is not supported, which I guess explains what is happening. Any suggestions for the best/easiest way to get this working properly on IE6? Ideally without modifying the ModalPopupExtender code, but I'll do this if I have to and it's the best solution.

  • Pass existing model into AJAX PartialViewResult

    - by Joe
    I’m using AJAX to asynchronously update a partial view and need to pass the existing model into the partial view. Controller Action public ActionResult Edit(int id) { var vM = new MyViewModel(); // vM is viewModel return View(vM); } Edit View @using (Html.BeginForm()) { @Html.ValidationSummary(true) ... <span id = "Ship"> @Html.Partial("AJAX_Views/_Ship")</span> _Ship Partial View @model MyProject.ViewModels.MyViewModel <table class="detailtable" style="min-width:398px"> <tr> <th style="padding-left:132px" colspan="2"> <span class="editor-label">Shipping&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Address</span> <span class="editor-label" style="padding-left:55px"> @Ajax.ActionLink("Delete", "SHIPDEL", new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "Ship", InsertionMode = InsertionMode.Replace, HttpMethod = "Get" })</span> <tr><th style="min-width:152px"><span class="editor-label">Street:</span></th> @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Id) @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.CompPersonId) @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.IsShip) <td><span class="editor-field">@Html.EditorFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Street) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Street) </span></td></tr> <tr><th><span class="editor-label">City:</span></th> <td><span class="editor-field">@Html.EditorFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.City) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.City) </span></td></tr> <tr><th><span class="editor-label">State:</span></th> <td><span class="editor-field">@Html.DropDownList("CmpAdrsSh.State", (IEnumerable<SelectListItem>)ViewBag._State) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.State) </span></td></tr> <tr><th><span class="editor-label">Zip:</span></th> <td><span class="editor-field">@Html.EditorFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Zip) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Zip) </span></td></tr> _ShipDel Partial View @model MyProject.ViewModels.MyViewModel <table class="detailtable" style="min-width:398px"> <tr> <th style="padding-left:132px" colspan="2"> <span class="editor-label">Shipping&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Address</span> <span class="editor-label" style="padding-left:10px; color:red">Marked for Deletion.</span></th></tr> <tr><td>To not Delete Select Cancel below!</td></tr> @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Street) @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.City) @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.State) @Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CmpAdrsSh.Zip) Controller PartialViewResult Action public PartialViewResult SHIPDEL() { return PartialView("AJAX_Views/_ShipDel"); } I tried adding this.ModelState to the Action but then the view will not render. I'm guessing I somehow have to pass the model to the SHIPDEL Action first. I couldn't find an @Ajax.ActionLink overload that would allow this. public PartialViewResult SHIPDEL() { return PartialView("AJAX_Views/_ShipDel", this.ModelState); } In the _ShipDel Partial View I need to expose the CmpAdrsSh properties so the model validates in the POST Action. The model is empty at this point. How do I pass the existing vM model into the _ShipDel partial view? Thank you,

  • Why does an authorized OAuth request token need to be exchanged for an access token?

    - by Joe Shaw
I'm wondering what the reasons are for OAuth to require a round-trip to the data provider to exchange an authorized request token for an access token. My understanding of the OAuth workflow is: Requesting site (consumer) gets a request token from the data provider site (service provider). Requesting site asks the data provider site to authenticate the user, passing in a callback. Once the user has been authenticated and authorized the requesting site, the user is directed back to the requesting site (consumer) via the callback provided which passes back the now-authorized request token and a verification code. The requesting site exchanges the request token for an access token. The requesting site uses the access token to get data from the data provider site. Assuming I got that right, why couldn't the callback simply provide the access token to the requesting site directly in step 3, eliminating step 4? Why is the request to exchange the request token for the access token necessary? Does it exist solely for consumers that require users to enter the verification code manually, with the thought that it would be shorter and simpler than the access token itself?

  • How do I pass a Yahoo Pipes item into a YQL query?

    - by Joe Shaw
One common thing to want to do in the Yahoo Pipes YQL element is pass in a Pipes value to the YQL query. For example: select * from html.tostring where url='<someurl>' and xpath='//div[@id="foo"]' and you want to pass in a dynamic value for <someurl>. Let's say that it's an RSS feed item's URL called item.link. Attempting to simply replace the quoted someurl with item.link gives you this error: Invalid identifier item.link. me is the only supported identifier in this context How can I pass this value in?

  • Calling CryptUIWizDigitalSign from .NET on x64

    - by Joe Kuemerle
    I am trying to digitally sign files using the CryptUIWizDigitalSign function from a .NET 2.0 application compiled to AnyCPU. The call works fine when running on x86 but fails on x64, it also works on an x64 OS when compiled to x86. Any idea on how to better marshall or call from x64? The Win32exception returned is "Error encountered during digital signing of the file ..." with a native error code of -2146762749. The relevant portion of the code are: [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct CRYPTUI_WIZ_DIGITAL_SIGN_INFO { public Int32 dwSize; public Int32 dwSubjectChoice; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPWStr)] public string pwszFileName; public Int32 dwSigningCertChoice; public IntPtr pSigningCertContext; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPWStr)] public string pwszTimestampURL; public Int32 dwAdditionalCertChoice; public IntPtr pSignExtInfo; } [DllImport("Cryptui.dll", CharSet=CharSet.Unicode, SetLastError=true)] public static extern bool CryptUIWizDigitalSign(int dwFlags, IntPtr hwndParent, string pwszWizardTitle, ref CRYPTUI_WIZ_DIGITAL_SIGN_INFO pDigitalSignInfo, ref IntPtr ppSignContext); CRYPTUI_WIZ_DIGITAL_SIGN_INFO digitalSignInfo = new CRYPTUI_WIZ_DIGITAL_SIGN_INFO(); digitalSignInfo = new CRYPTUI_WIZ_DIGITAL_SIGN_INFO(); digitalSignInfo.dwSize = Marshal.SizeOf(digitalSignInfo); digitalSignInfo.dwSubjectChoice = 1; digitalSignInfo.dwSigningCertChoice = 1; digitalSignInfo.pSigningCertContext = pSigningCertContext; digitalSignInfo.pwszTimestampURL = timestampUrl; digitalSignInfo.dwAdditionalCertChoice = 0; digitalSignInfo.pSignExtInfo = IntPtr.Zero; digitalSignInfo.pwszFileName = filepath; CryptUIWizDigitalSign(1, IntPtr.Zero, null, ref digitalSignInfo, ref pSignContext)); And here is how the SigningCertContext is retrieved (minus various error handling) public IntPtr GetCertContext(String pfxfilename, String pswd) IntPtr hMemStore = IntPtr.Zero; IntPtr hCertCntxt = IntPtr.Zero; IntPtr pProvInfo = IntPtr.Zero; uint provinfosize = 0; try { byte[] pfxdata = PfxUtility.GetFileBytes(pfxfilename); CRYPT_DATA_BLOB ppfx = new CRYPT_DATA_BLOB(); ppfx.cbData = pfxdata.Length; ppfx.pbData = Marshal.AllocHGlobal(pfxdata.Length); Marshal.Copy(pfxdata, 0, ppfx.pbData, pfxdata.Length); hMemStore = Win32.PFXImportCertStore(ref ppfx, pswd, CRYPT_USER_KEYSET); pswd = null; if (hMemStore != IntPtr.Zero) { Marshal.FreeHGlobal(ppfx.pbData); while ((hCertCntxt = Win32.CertEnumCertificatesInStore(hMemStore, hCertCntxt)) != IntPtr.Zero) { if (Win32.CertGetCertificateContextProperty(hCertCntxt, CERT_KEY_PROV_INFO_PROP_ID, IntPtr.Zero, ref provinfosize)) pProvInfo = Marshal.AllocHGlobal((int)provinfosize); else continue; if (Win32.CertGetCertificateContextProperty(hCertCntxt, CERT_KEY_PROV_INFO_PROP_ID, pProvInfo, ref provinfosize)) break; } } finally { if (pProvInfo != IntPtr.Zero) Marshal.FreeHGlobal(pProvInfo); if (hMemStore != IntPtr.Zero) Win32.CertCloseStore(hMemStore, 0); } return hCertCntxt; }

  • MPMediaickerController memory leak identified by Leaks instrument

    - by Joe
This is code from Apple's Addmusic example. MPMediaPickerController *picker = [[MPMediaPickerController alloc] initWithMediaTypes: MPMediaTypeMusic]; picker.delegate = self; picker.allowsPickingMultipleItems = YES; picker.prompt = NSLocalizedString (@"Add songs to play", "Prompt in media item picker"); // The media item picker uses the default UI style, so it needs a default-style // status bar to match it visually [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarStyle: UIStatusBarStyleDefault animated: YES]; [self presentModalViewController: picker animated: YES]; [picker release]; I'm using this code in my app and the Leaks instrument highlights a leak on the line: [self presentModalViewController: picker animated: YES]; I think that this is because this line retains a reference to picker which cannot be subsequently released. Is there any way around this or is Leaks incorrectly identifying a leak?

  • Determining Best Table Structure for MySQL Performance

    - by Joe Majewski
I'm working on a browser-based RPG for one of my websites, and right now I'm trying to determine the best way to organize my SQL tables for performance and maintenance. Here's my question: Does the number of columns in an SQL table affect the speed in which it can be queried? I am not a newbie when it comes to PHP or MySQL. I used to develop things with the common goal of getting them to work, but I've recently advanced to the stage where a functional program is not good enough unless it's fast and reliable. Anyways, right now I have a members table that has around 15 columns. It contains information such as the player's username, password, email, logins, page views, etcetera. It doesn't contain any information on the player's progress in the game, however. If I added columns for things such as army size, gold, turns, and whatnot, then it could easily rise to around 40 or 50 total columns. Oh, and my database structure IS normalized. Will a table with 50 columns that gets constantly queried be a bad idea? Should I split it into two tables; one for the user's general information and one for the user's game statistics? I know I could check the query time myself, but I haven't actually created the tables yet and I think I'd be better off with some professional advice on this important decision for my game. Thank you for your time! :)

  • JavaScript Trigger window.open When a User Clicks Anywhere on Page

    - by Joe Hammonds
I have a problem that I have been trying to figure out and haven't been able to get past it because Chrome/FireFox/IE do not publicly publish their "rules" for pop up blocking when it comes to JavaScript, Flash, etc. I am trying to trigger a window.open() when a user clicks anywhere on page. I've tried this: document.onclick = window.open("http://msn.com"); But all 3 browsers are blocking the popup, even though it is a user interaction.

  • How to Store and Retrieve Images Using SQL Server (Server Management Studio)

    - by Joe Majewski
I am having difficulties when trying to insert files into a SQL Server database. I'll try to break this down as best as I can: What data type should I be using to store image files (jpeg/png/gif/etc)? Right now my table is using the image data type, but I am curious if varbinary would be a better option. How would I go about inserting the image into the database? Does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio have any built in functions that allow insertions of files into tables? If so, how is that done? Also, how could this be done through the use of an HTML form with PHP handling the input data and placing it into the table? How would I fetch the image from the table and display it on the page? I understand how to SELECT the cell's contents, but how would I go about translating that into a picture. Would I have to have a header(Content type: image/jpeg)? I have no problem doing any of these things with MySQL, but the SQL Server environment is still new to me, and I am working on a project for my job that requires the use of stored procedures to grab various data. Any and all help is appreciated.

  • SEO - Does google+other search engines index links within <noscript> tags?

    - by Joe
I have setup some dropdown menus allowing users to find pages on my website by selecting options across multiple dropdowns: eg. Color of Car, Year This would generate a link like: mysite.xyz/blue/2010/ The only problem is, because this link is dynamically assembled with Javascript, I've also had to assemble each possible combination from the dropdowns into a list like: <noscript> No javascript enabled? Here are all the links: <a href='mysite.xyz/blue/2009/'>mysite.xyz/blue/2009/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/blue/2010/'>mysite.xyz/blue/2010/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/red/2009/'>mysite.xyz/red/2009/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/red/2010/'>mysite.xyz/red/2010/</a> </noscript> My question is, if I put these in a tag like this, will I be penalized or anything by search engines such as Google? I've already been doing so for some navigational stuff which required offsets etc. However, now I would be listing a whole list of links here too. I want to provide them here, moreso so that google can actually index my pages - but for those without javascript, they can still navigate too. Your thoughts? Also.. even though I have some links that appear to have been indexed, I AM NOT 100% SURE, which is why I'm asking :P

  • Help Installing phpMyAdmin on Linux Server

    - by Joe Majewski
I constantly get this error when attempting to view index.php in the phpMyAdmin folder I have setup: Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly. I am using subversion with three co-workers and I am trying to install this on my repository, which is at /svni3/myusername/intranet/ on our linux development server. I do have shell access so I would be able to install it somewhere else if that may be causing the problem. My config.inc.php file looks like this (only the things I changed): $cfg['blowfish_secret'] = 'blah'; $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'cookie'; //$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'username'; //$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'password'; $cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost'; Other helpful information??? When I ping localhost it works. When I run the command "ls -l /var/lib/php": drwxrwx--- 2 root apache 4096 2009-04-17 02:31 session If there's anything else that may be helpful let me know; this has been plaguing me for a few hours now.

  • Changing all CSS styles with a property via Jquery

    - by Joe
On a page I include some css eg: <style type='test/css'> .myBox{ color:#000000; border:#FFFFFF; padding:4px; } .myBox2{ color:#000000; border:#FFFFFF; padding:4px; } </style> I want to then change the "color" property set within both myBox and myBox2 in jquery, without knowing the actual name (myBox, myBox2) of the css style. In otherwords, I want to update ALL css styles on the page where color = certain value, and then also update border where = certain value. An example (not valid code) might be: $("all css [color:#000000]").html("#FF0000"); How could this be possible using jquery?

  • How do I style jQuery Combobox to look like a normal select dropdown

    - by Joe T
Hi everyone. I am making use of jQuery 1.4.4 and jQuery UI 1.8.7 in a legacy code base. I have added a few combobox() ui-widgets, these comboboxes live along side normal <select> dropdowns. I am finding it difficult to get the two elements to look the same, i.e. the unstyled <select> with it's Internet Explorer / Windows based style and the most basic jQuery UI Themed ui-widget combobox. The screenshot shows an unstyled <select> on the left and a jQuery ui-widget combobox on the right: Is it possible to make the two look the same?
