• Serving images from Amazon S3 in PHP application

- by luckytaxi
So it just occurred to me that once I upload profile pics to S3, I have to figure out a way to keep track of the files. For example, if "susan" uploads 3 profile pics, I need to recall those 3 pictures and display it on her profile page if someone views her page. With that said, would the following work? User uploads picture from form Save file information (filename, user info, etc...) into DB and reference URL from S3 Upload photos to S3 When displaying pictures, I'll query the DB for the info and display the images from S3 accordingly.

• How to provide an API client with 1,000,000 database results?

- by Chris Dutrow
What is a good way to provide an API client with 1,000,000 database results? We are cureently using PostgreSQL. A few suggested methods: Paging using Cursors Paging using random numbers ( Add "GREATER THAN ORDER BY " to each query ) Save information to a file and let the client download it Iterate through results, then POST the data to the client server Return only keys to the client, then let the client request the objects from Cloud files like Amazon S3 (still may require paging just to get the file names ). What haven't I thought of that is stupidly simple and way better than any of these options?

• oracle sql developer is truncating my results

- by nont
I'm calling a stored function like this: select XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823') from dual; The query results then show up in a table underneath, which I can right click and select "Export Date" - XML <RESULTS> <ROW> <COLUMN NAME="XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823')" <xml>yada yada</xml><morexml>...</COLUMN> </ROW> </RESULTS> The problem is the "..." - SQL Developer (2.1.0.63 on Linux) is not showing all the data - its truncating the result and appending the ellipsis. This is of no use to me. How do I get it to export ALL of my data?

• Why do a small amount of add/deletes take several seconds in EF4?

- by TomWij
Using the Entity Framework 4. I have created a Code First database in the past and a piece of code needs to delete and add 16 objects, this takes 6 seconds each. That's 300+ ms for each query! The deletes/adds occur in a foreach scope and there is a SaveChanges() outside the foreach. In the above image you see that each takes 6 seconds, which is 34% of the time, for 16 calls. That doesn't sound normal to me... Why is this and how can I improve the performance? If there is no solution: Are there any workarounds I can use? It would be a pain to rewrite my project...

• MS SQL Server Dates Excel

- by KillerSnail
I have data this is linked from SQL Server into an excel document. The column format on the SQL Server is datetime2. When I get the data via an ODBC connection it comes across as a string? I tried using CAST(column AS DATE ) but that didn't work. I tried reformatting via CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), column, 103) as well but that didn't work. I tried retrieving the data via Microsoft query as well but that didn't work. At the moment I am using VBA code like: While (ActiveCell.Value <> "") ActiveCell.Value = DATEVALUE(ActiveCell.Value) ActiveCell.Offset(1,0).Activate Wend and looping through each column that needs this treatment but 100000 rows in multiple columns takes forever to loop through. Are there any alternatives?

• Linq to NHibernate - How to return a parent object with only certain child objects included

- by vakman
Given a simplified model like the following: public class Enquiry { public virtual DateTime Created { get; set; } public virtual Sender Sender { get; set; } } public class Sender { public virtual IList<Enquiry> Enquiries { get; set; } } How can you construct a Linq to Nhibernate query such that it gives you back a list of senders and their enquiries where the enquiries meet some criteria. I have tried something like this: return session.Linq<Enquiry>() .Where(enquiry => enquiry.Created < DateTime. Now) .Select(enquiry => enquiry.Sender) In this case I get an InvalidCastException saying you can't cast type Sender to type Enquiry. Any pointers on how I can do this without using HQL?

• How to deal with large result sets with Linq to Entities?

- by user169867
I have a fairly complex linq to entities query that I display on a website. It uses paging so I never pull down more than 50 records at a time for display. But I also want to give the user the option to export the full results to Excel or some other file format. My concern is that there could potentially be a large # of records all being loaded into memory at one time to do this. Is there a way to process a linq result set 1 record at a time like you could w/ a datareader so only 1 record is really being kept in memory at a time? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

• SQL Server 2005 - Find minimum unused value within a range

- by Geo Ego
I have a situation similar to the following question: Insert Data Into SQL Table Where my scenario differs is that I have a non-auto-incrementing primary key field that can have a range between 1000 and 1999. We only have about a hundred values in it thus far, but the maximum value has already been taken (1999), and there are gaps in the numbering sequence. Thus, I need to find a value that is between 1000-1999 and not taken. For instance, if my current values are, for example, 1000, 1001, 1003, and 1999, I would want the query to return 1002.

• Getting .NET schema for a stored procedure result

- by PHeiberg
I have a couple of stored procedures in T-SQL where each stored procedure has a fixed schema for the result set. I need to map the result sets for each procedure to a POCO object and need the column name and type for each column in the result set. Is there a quick way of accessing the information? The best way I have found so far is accessing each stored procedure from .NET and writing my own extension method on a IDataReader/IDataRecord for dumping the information (column names and types) out. Example, a stored procedure executing the following query: SELECT Id, IntField, NullableIntField, VarcharField, DateField FROM SomeTable would require me to have the mapping information: Id - Guid IntField - System.Int32 NullableIntField - Nullable<System.Int32> VarcharField - String DateField - DateTime

• Linq To SQL: Retain list order when using .Contains

- by rockinthesixstring
I'm using Lucene.net to build a MyListOfIds As List(Of Integer) which I then pass on to my Linq service. I then search the database as follows Return _EventRepository.Read().Where(Function(e) MyListOfIds.Contains(e.ID)).ToList Now I know that Lucene is already ordering MyListOfIds based on the weight it gave each term. What sucks is that Linq is losing that order in it's SQL search. My Question: How can I retain that sort order when building my Lambda expression? I tried using LINQPad to see how the query is being built, but because I had to declare a variable LINQPad didn't show me the resultant SQL :-( Here's what I tried in LINQPad Dim i As New List(Of Integer) i.Add(1) i.Add(100) i.Add(15) i.Add(3) i.Add(123) Dim r = (From e In Events Where i.Contains(e.ID) Select e) note: my example is in VB.NET, but I don't mind if responses are in C#

• Entity Framework 5 upgrade from 4

- by user1714591
I'm having an issue with the Where clause in a search, in my original version EF4 I could add a Where clause with 2 parameters, the where clause (string predicate) and a ObjectParameter list such as var query = context.entities.Where(WhereClause.ToString(), Params.ToArray()); since my upgrade to EF5 I don't seem to have that option am I missing something? This was originally used to build dynamic where clause such as "it.entity_id = @entity_id" then holding the variable value in the ObjectParameter. I'm hoping I don't have to rewrite all the searches that have been built out this way, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

• How does hibernate use an empty string for an equality restriction?

- by Stephen
I have a column that potentially has some bad data and I can't clean it up, so I need to check for either null or empty string. I'm doing a Hibernate Criteria query so I've got the following that returns incorrectly right now: Session session = getSessionFactory().openSession(); Transaction tx = session.beginTransaction(); Criteria myCriteria = session.createCriteria(Object); ... myCriteria.add(Restrictions.or(Restrictions.isNull("stringColumn"), Restrictions.eq("stringColumn", ""))); List<Objects> list = myCriteria.list(); I can't get it to properly return the results I'd expect. So as an experiment I changed the second restriction to read: Restrictions.eq("stringColumn", "''") And it started returning the expected results, so is hibernate incorrectly translating my empty string (e.g. "") into a SQL empty string (e.g. ''), or am I just doing this wrong?

• SQL Server - Percent based Full Text Search

- by Sukhminder Singh
Hi I want to conduct search on a particular column of a table in such a way that returning result set should satify following 2 conditions: Returning result set should have records whose 90% of the characters matches with the given search text. Returning result set should have records whose 70% of the consecutive characters matches with the given search text. It implies that when 10 character word Sukhminder is searched, then: it should return records like Sukhmindes, ukhminder, Sukhmindzr, because it fulfils both of the above mentioned conditions. But it should not return records like Sukhmixder because it does not fulfil the second condition. Likewise, It should not return record Sukhminzzz because it does not fulfil the first condition. I am trying to use Full Text Search feature of SQL Server. But, could not formulate the required query yet. Kindly reply ASAP.

• SQL Count unique objects defined by parameters

- by Eduardo
I have a table with: id | parameter 1 | A 1 | B 2 | A 3 | A 3 | B That represent objects defined with the values as: 1 -> A,B 2 -> A 3 -> A,B I want to count the number of objects with different parameters using a SQL query, so in this case it would be 2 unique objects as 1 and 3 have the same parameters. The database is a Microsoft SQL Server 2000. But I do not mind knowing the solution for other databases.

• Entity Framework projections

- by David McClelland
We are investigating the Entity Framework to see if it will meet our particular needs. Here is the scenario I am interested in: I have a large table (let's call it VeryWideRecord) which has many columns, and it has a corresponding business object (it's also called VeryWideRecord). I would like to be able to query my database for a VeryWideRecord business object, but only have values for certain columns returned by the underlying SQL. Can I do this with the Entity Framework? I am uncertain as to whether this could be done with the Entity Framework's table splitting feature, because the application needs to be able (at runtime) to change the columns that are requested. The reason for this is that we are trying to minimize the amount of information that is going across the wire. I see how this could be done using NHibernate (example), but how can I do this with the Entity Framework?

• Get Distance from geohash field in solr 3.6

- by Omar A. Shaaban
Is it possible to get distance returned from a geodist() filter, on a geohash field that has multiple values? The geosort and the geodist filter are working fine, but I'm trying to get the distance between the query point and a location that was returned in the result. I've tried http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SpatialSearch#Returning_the_distance The second method which is : //localhost:8983/solr/select?indent=true&fl=name,store&sfield=store&pt=45.15,-93.85&sort=score%20asc&q={!func}geodist() But it returns weird results, tested with 2 locations it returns score 9979.032, where there is ~33,000 Km between both points in reality? What is the unit that it uses returning the distance in the score field? I assumed km, but it does not make sense, or the result is bogus, I dunno Anyhelp would be appreciated, thanks

• Will MySql caching cause performance problems?

- by Camran
I am about to upload my website onto a VPS. It is a classifieds website, where all data is stored in MySql and Solr. I wonder if when using MySql:s cache, the server will slow down? Ie, if somebody makes a search for the first time, and MySql is to cache the query, will the caching make the server slower than if it would not cache anything? After the caching is done I know things will improve in terms of performance... But I would like to know if I should even use the cache or not, what do you think? Thanks

• Default datetime format in mySQL

- by Davuz
I'm coding to search data by compare datetime. In web form, user input value '2012-06-04' store in $_REQUEST['dateSearch']. I create datetime object from that: $dateObj = date_create_from_format("Y-m-d",$_REQUEST['dateSearch']); $dateParam = $dateObj->format("Y-m"); Then I use $dateParam in sql query to find data $sql = " SELECT * FROM `temp` as `t` WHERE `t`.`date` LIKE '$dateParam%' "; Everything is ok, but I'm not sure mySQL alway use only one datetime format "Y-m-d H:i:s". At here, $dateParam = $dateObj->format("Y-m"); I set default format is "Y-m". Is the default format never change? I don't want hard set format "Y-m-d H:i:s" in code, instead of, I think get format string from system to use is better. How do I get default datetime format string from mySQL???

• Having trouble comparing a range of dates entered in a form with records in a mySQL database

- by Andrew Fox
I have a table called schedule and a column called Date where the column type is date. In that column I have a range of dates, which is currently from 2012-11-01 to 2012-11-30. I have a small form where the user can enter a range of dates (input names from and to) and I want to be able to compare the range of dates with the dates currently in the database. This is what I have: //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////First set the date range that we want to use////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// if(isset($_POST['from']) && ($_POST['from'] != NULL)) { $startDate = $_POST['from']; } else { //Default date is Today $startDate = date("Y-m-d"); } if(isset($_POST['to']) && ($_POST['to'] != NULL)) { $endDate = $_POST['to']; } else { //Default day is one month from today $endDate = date("Y-m-d", strtotime("+1 month")); } ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////Next calculate the total amount of days selected above to use as a limiter////// ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// $dayStart = strtotime($startDate); $dayEnd = strtotime($endDate); $total_days = abs($dayEnd - $dayStart) / 86400 +1; echo "Start Date: " . $startDate . "
End Date: " . $endDate . "
"; echo "Day Start: " . $dayStart . "
Day End: " . $dayEnd . "
"; echo "Total Days: " . $total_days . "
"; //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////Then we're going to see if the dates selected are in the schedule table////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //Select all of the dates currently in the schedule table between the range selected. $sql = ("SELECT Date FROM schedule WHERE Date BETWEEN '$startDate' AND '$endDate' LIMIT $total_days"); //Run a check on the query to make sure it worked. If it failed then print the error. if(!$result_date_query = $mysqli->query($sql)) { die('There was an error getting the dates from the schedule table [' . $mysqli->error . ']'); } //Set the dates to an array for future use. // $current_dates = $result_date_query->fetch_assoc(); //Loop through the results while a result is being returned. while($row = $result_date_query->fetch_assoc()) { echo "Row: " . $row['Date'] . "
"; echo "Start day: " . date('Y-m-d', $dayStart) . "
"; //Set this loop to add 1 day to the Start Date until it reaches the End Date for($i = $dayStart; $i <= $dayEnd; $i = strtotime('+1 day', $i)) { $date = date('Y-m-d',$i); echo "Loop Start day: " . date('Y-m-d', $dayStart) . "
"; //Run a check to see if any of the dates selected are in the schedule table. if($row['Date'] != $date) { echo "Current Date: " . $row['Date'] . "
"; echo "Date: " . $date . "
"; echo "It appears as though you've selected some dates that are not in the schedule database.
Please correct the issue and try again."; return; } } } //Free the result so something else can use it. $result_date_query->free(); As you can see I've added in some echo statements so I can see what is being produced. From what I can see it looks like my $row['Date'] is not incrementing and staying at the same date. I originally had it set to a variable (currently commented out) but I thought that could be causing problems. I have created the table with dates ranging from 2012-11-01 to 2012-11-15 for testing and entered all of this php code onto phpfiddle.org but I can't get the username provided to connect. Here is the link: PHP Fiddle I'll be reading through the documentation to try and figure out the user connection problem in the meantime, I would really appreciate any direction or advice you can give me.

• PHP Framework Benefits / Downfalls

- by Lizard
I have been a PHP developer for about 10 years now and until about a month ago I have never used a framework. The framework I am now using due to an existing codebase is cakePHP 1.2 I can see certain benefits of the frameworks with the basic helpers like default layouts. I can deffinately seen the benefits of MVC keeping the logic sperate etc. But the query building just seems to be bloated. Is this expected? Am I likely to be able to build better queries than the framework could build? I just feel I could get my apps running better without a framework. What are your thoughts?

• Open source LINQ search engine for website

- by Noel
I want to add a search engine to my website. I want it to handler boolean searches and give me a list of results in order or best match. I need it to be able to work with LINQ, because I want to add additional where clauses to the final query that gets run. I am looking for the best open source .NET search engine that works with LINQ. I like lucene.net but the problem is the LINQ interface (LINQ to Lucene) hasn't been updated since 2008. Are there any good options out there?

• Does AsEnumerable() cache all result (LINQ)

- by Akshay
When we call a query operator on a sequence, a sequence-specific operator gets called. I mean if i call Where<>() operator on IEnumerable<>, the operator that will be called will be defined in Enumerable class and if it's called on IQueryable<>, the one defined in Queryable class will be called. Consider the operator Reverse, defined in the Enumerable class. If i want to call it on Iqueryable<> then I must use the AsEnumerable<>() operator to first convert it into IEnumerable<>. db.Countries.OrderBy(cntry=>cntry.CountryName).AsEnumerable().Reverse() But the Reverse operator got to have all records at the same time so that it can reverse them. In the above code do all the records get loaded in memory first and then the Reverse() operator is reversing it ?
