• Help a Python newbie with a Django model inheritance problem

  I'm working on my first real Django project after years of PHP programming, and I am running into a problem with my models. First, I noticed that I was copying and pasting code between the models, and being a diligent OO programmer I decided to make a parent class that the other models could inherit from: class Common(model.Model): self.name = models.CharField(max_length=255) date_created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) date_modified = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Meta: abstract=True So far so good. Now all my other models extend "Common" and have names and dates like I want. However, I have a class for "Categories" were the name has to be unique. I assume there should be a relatively simple way for me to access the name attribute from Common and make it unique. However, the different methods I have tried to use have all failed. For example: class Category(Common): def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): self.name.unique=True Spits up the error "Caught an exception while rendering: 'Category' object has no attribute 'name' Can someone point me in the right direction?

• Dump characters (glyphs) from TrueType font (TTF) into bitmaps

  I have a custom TrueType font (TTF) that consists of a bunch of icons, which I'd like to render as individual bitmaps (GIF, PNG, whatever) for use on the Web. You'd think this is a simple task, but apparently not? There is a huge slew of TTF-related software here: http://cg.scs.carleton.ca/~luc/ttsoftware.html But it's all varying levels of "not quite what I want", broken links and/or hard to impossible to compile on a modern Ubuntu box -- eg. dumpglyphs (C++) and ttfgif (C) both fail to compile due to obscure missing dependencies. Any ideas?

  I can't solve it: You are given 8 integers: A, B, C representing a line on a plane with equation A*x + B*y = C a, b, c representing another line x, y representing a point on a plane The two lines are not parallel therefore divide plane into 4 pieces. Point (x, y) lies inside of one these pieces. Problem: Write a fast algorithm that will find a point with integer coordinates in the same piece as (x,y) that is closest to the cross point of the two given lines. Note: This is not a homework, this is old Euler-type task that I have absolutely no idea how to approach.

• Problems Executing iPhone "GenericKeychain" Example

  I can't get apple's "GenericKeychain" example to run. I have replaced all 5 occurrences, as mentioned in the readme file, of "YOUR_APP_ID_HERE.com.yourcompany" with my own string: se.[company name].[project name].demo. The compilation goes fine but when trying to run it on the phone, an error saying "The executable was signed with invalid entitlements" appears. And yes, I have an ad hoc provisioning profile installed. I've tried to add "Entitlements.plist" with "get-task-allow" checked but with the same result. Has anyone been able to run the example? • What's the thought behind Children and Controls properties in WPF?

  I don't know if this should go on Programmers, but I thought it was relevant here. Being a skilled WPF programmer myself, I often wonder what people were thinking when they designed WPF in terms of naming conventions. Why would you sometimes have a property called Children for accessing the children of the control, and then sometimes have an equivalent property, just called Controls instead? What were they thinking here? Another example is the Popup control. Instead of a Content property, it has a Child property. Why would you do that? To me that's just confusing. So I'm wondering if there's a logical reason for it, which would probably also help me understand what the properties are called next time I need to do some speed-programming. If there's no reason behind it, then all I can say is WAT.

  I want to know what kind of technologies are used nowadays as underlying screen capture engine for remote administration software like VNC pcAnywhere TeamViewer RAC Remote Administrator etc.. The programming language is not so important as just to know whether a driver needs to be developed which is polling video memory 30 times per second or there are any com objects built in the Windows kernel to help doing this? I'm not interested in 3rd party components for doing this. Do I have to use DirectX facilities? Just want some start point to develop my own screen stream capture engine, which will be less CPU hog.

  Need a solution to kill nodes like <footer>foobar</footer> and <div class="nav"></div> from many several HTML files. I want to dump a site to disk without the menus and footers and what not. Ideally I would accomplish this task using basic unix tools like sed. Since it's not XML I can't use xmlstarlet. • Preventing referenced assembly PDB and XML files copied to output

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 C#/.NET 3.5 project with a post build task to ZIP the contents. However I'm finding that I'm also getting the referenced assemblies' .pdb (debug) and .xml (documentation) files in my output directory (and ZIP). For example, if MyProject.csproj references YourAssembly.dll and there are YourAssembly.xml and YourAssembly.pdb files in the same directory as the DLL they will show up in my output directory (and ZIP). I can exclude *.pdb when ZIP'ing but I cannot blanket exclude the *.xml files as I have deployment files with the same extension. Is there a way to prevent the project from copying referenced assembly PDB and XML files?

  Hi, I am using IKVM to get SVNKit on a Mono project I'm working with, I have a class that implements an interface from SVNKit, and I can't compile: On windows and on .NET, everything compiles fine, just getting this on Mono. /home/nubela/Workspace/subsync/subsync/Core/Subversion/PropGetHandler.cs(22,22): Error CS0535: Subsync.Core.Subversion.PropGetHandler' does not implement interface member org.tmatesoft.svn.core.wc.ISVNPropertyHandler.__()' (CS0535) (subsync) I googled _() method, and it seems to be the initializer method for the base class in the Java library compiled from IKVM. I have no clue how to proceed now, any idea guys? :)

  In Django Design Patterns, the author recommends using zlib.crc32 to mask primary keys in URLs. After some quick testing, I noticed that crc32 produces negative integers about half the time, which seems undesirable for use in a URL. zlib.adler32 does not appear to produce negatives, but is described as "weaker" than CRC. Is this method (either CRC or Adler-32) safe for usage in a URL as an alternate to a primary key? (i.e. is it collision-safe?) Is the "weaker" Adler-32 a satisfactory alternative for this task? How the heck do you reverse this?! That is, how do you determine the original primary key from the checksum?

• Behavior of a pipe after a fork()

  When reading about pipes in Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, I noticed that after a fork that the parent can close() the read end of a pipe and it doesn't close the read end for the child. When a process forks, does its file descriptors get retained? What I mean by this is that before the fork the pipe read file descriptor had a retain count of 1, and after the fork 2. When the parent closed its read side the fd went to 1 and is kept open for the child. Is this essentially what is happening? Does this behavior also occur for regular file descriptors?

• Doctrine lazy loading classes takes 100 ms?!

• Cisco ASA: Allowing and Denying VPN Access based on membership to an AD group

  I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connecting to an Active Directory server for VPN authentication. Usually we'd restrict this to a particular OU, but in this case users which need access are spread across multiple OUs. So, I'd like to use a group to specify which users have remote access. I've created the group and added the users, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to deny users which aren't in that group. Right now, if someone connects they get assigned the correct group policy "companynamera" if they are in that group, so the LDAP mapping is working. However, users who are not in that group still authenticate fine, and their group policy becomes the LDAP path of their first group, i.e. CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com, and then are still allowed access. How do I add a filter so that I can map everything that isn't "companynamera" to no access? • Convert graph in to data points using Mechanical Turk?

  I looked around but did not see anyone using Mechanical Turk for this. I've heard of the service, but never used it before. I need to take the following graph and digitize it so I get a list of data points for each line (noting that there are two Y-axes, and thus depends on which line we are talking about). This is pretty time consuming for me, and I saw other posts on StackOverflow about digitizing software doing a poor job at this. Would Mechanical Turk be well suited to my task? • WWSAPI and setting "soapenv:Header" values

  I'm trying to connect to a web service from a C++ app using WWS. I got the base connection working just fine. My XML message has two parts though, a header (soapenv:Header) and a body (soapenv:Body). the generated functions only fill in the body. How do I set the Header information? I assumed it has something to do with WsSetHeader() or WsAddCustomHeader() but can't seam to find the right values to use in the parameters. Can someone point me in the right direction here? I've been googling and trying to research this now for several days and am finding many sources for basic help with WWSAPI, but nothing seams to go deeper into how to use it for more advanced applications. any good links or resources to find more advanced help on WWSAPI? • Testing harness for online teaching?

  I have been asked to teach an online programming course, and I am looking for a test harness especially geared to education. Some students will have significant coding experience, but others will be total newbies. The course is an introduction to software development, mostly taught in C with some C++ and Java thrown in. In any case, I would like to read their source code only after a test suite has made sure that it compiles and executes properly. The students will also benefit from having a tool they can check their code against before submitting it. However, the Learning Management System my employer is using doesn't have such a system. • Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

  Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.
