• Unable to uninstall SQL Server express

  When I try, I receive the following error message: A computer restart is required. You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server. Of course, I have restarted the computer :-) I'm not really sure how to proceed. The version that sql server reports when I query it is: SQL Server 10.0.1600.22 - RTM (Express Edition with Advanced ) Solved: As it turns out, I had to end up uninstalling logitech's quick cam pro software. Although the fix below did not directly resolve it, the value of that registry key led me to discovering the solution by querying for it online :-) thanks!!!

• Review: ComponentOne Studio for Entity Framework

  While I have always been a fan of libraries that improve coding efficiency and reduce code redundancy I have mostly been using ones that were in the public domain.  As part of the Geeks With Blogs Influencers program a got my hands on ComponentOne’s Studio for Entity Framework.  Below are my thought after working with the product for several weeks. My coding preference has always been maintainable code that is reusable across an enterprises protfolio.  Because of this my focus in reviewing this product is less on the RAD components and more on its benefits for layered applications using code first Entity Framework. Before we get into the pros and cons here is a summary of the main feature listed for SEF. Unified Data Context Virtual Data Access More Powerful Data Binding Pros The first thing that I found to my liking is the C1DataSource. It basically manages a cache for your Entity Model context.  Under RAD conditions this is setup automatically when you drop the object on a your design surface.  If you are like me and want to abstract you data management into a library it takes a little more work, but it is still acceptable and gains the same benefits. The second feature that I found beneficial is the definition of views with improved sorting and filtering.  Again the ease of use of these features is greater on the RAD side but no capabilities are missing when manipulating object in code. Linq has become my friend over the last couple of years and it was great to see that ComponentOne had ensured that it remained a first class citizen in their design.  When you look into this product yourself I would suggest taking a dive into LiveLinq which allow the joining of different data source types. As I went through discovering the features of this framework I appreciated the number of examples that they supplied for different uses.  Besides showing how to use SEF with WinForms, WPF and Silverlight they also showed how to accomplish tasks both RAD, code only and MVVM approaches. Cons The only area that I would really like to see improvement is in there level of detail in their documentation.  Specifically I would like to have seen some of the supporting code explained, such as what some supporting object did, in the examples instead of having to go to the programmer’s reference. I did find some times where currently existing projects had some trouble determining scope that the RAD controls were allowed, but I expect this is something that is in part end user related. Summary Overall I found the Studio for Entity Framework capable and well thought out.  If you are already using the Entity Framework this product will fit into your environment with little effort in return for greater flexibility and greater robustness in your solutions. Whether the $895 list price for a standard version works for you will depend on your return on investment. Smaller companies with only a small number of projects may not be able to stomach it, you get a full featured product that is supported by a well established company.  The more projects and the more code you have the greater your return on investment will be. • Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

  In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings. I'm used to XE's simplified user management: Go to Administration/ Users/ Create user Assign user name and password Roles: leave the default ones (connect and resource) Privileges: click on "Enable all" to select the 11 possible ones Create This way I get a user that has full access to its data and no access to everything else. This is fine since I only need it to develop my app. When the app is to be deployed, the client's DBAs configure the environment. Now I have to create users in a full Oracle 11g server and I'm completely lost. I have a new concept (profiles) and there're like 20 roles and hundreds of privileges in various categories. • sqlcmd won't execute - Claims Native Client not installed properly

  I'm trying to use sqlcmd to execute some SQL scripts. Using a test command with a simple query like: sqlcmd -S HOSTNAME -d MYDATABASE -Q 'SELECT Names FROM Customers' sqlcmd does not appear to make any attempt to connect to the server as it displays this message: Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup. The native client was presumably installed as part of the SQL Server setup and likely correctly. I actually get this message on any machine with SQL server installed trying to use sqlcmd so it's not a matter of the installation being corrupt. Unfortunately the message really tells me nothing about the problem so I don't know what the real issue is. I know the SQL Native client is working properly since a vbscript was able to execute SQL queries against the database. Is there some additional configuration needed to use sqlcmd?

• Using progress dialog in Visual Studio extensions

Your extension looks odd when you try to use windows controls and dialogs in your extensions. Visual Studio SDK exposes many interfaces so that your extension looks as integrated with Visual Studio as possible. When your extension is performing a long running task, you have many options to notify the progress to the user. One such option is through Visual Studio status bar. I have previously blogged about displaying progress through Visual Studio status bar. In this blog post I am going to highlight another way using IVsThreadedWaitDialog2 interface. One thing to note is, as the IVsThreadedWaitDialog2 interface name suggests it is a dialog hence user cannot perform any action when the dialog is being shown. So Visual Studio seems responsive to user, even when a task is being performed. Visual Studio itself makes use of this interface heavily. One example is when you are loading a solution (.sln) with lot of projects Visual Studio displays dialog implemented by this interface (screenshot below). So the first step is to get the instance of IVsThreadedWaitDialog2 interface using IServiceProvider interface. var dialogFactory = _serviceProvider.GetService(typeof(SVsThreadedWaitDialogFactory)) as IVsThreadedWaitDialogFactory; IVsThreadedWaitDialog2 dialog = null; if (dialogFactory != null) { dialogFactory.CreateInstance(out dialog); } So if your have the package initialized properly out object dialog will be not null and would contain the instance of IVsThreadedWaitDialog2 interface. Once the instance is got, you call the different methods to manage the dialog. I will cover 3 methods StartWaitDialog, EndWaitDialog and HasCanceled in this blog post. • July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 20 (sys.dm_tran_locks)

  The sys.dm_tran_locks DMV is used to return active lock resources on your server. Locking is a mechanism used by SQL Server to protect the integrity of data when you have multiple users that may potentially access the same data at the same time. Let’s run a query against this DMV so we can analyze the results. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_tran_locks As we can see, its a lot of lock information returned from this DMV. I will not go into detail about each of the columns returned, but I will touch on the ones that I feel are the most important. The first column in the output is the resource_type column which tells you the type of lock a particular row represents. It could be a PAGE lock, RID, OBJECT, DATABASE, or several other lock types. The resource_database_id represents the id of the database for a particular lock resource. The resource_lock_partition column represents the ID of a lock partition. When you have a table that is partitioned, locks can be escalated to the partition level before going to a table level lock. The request_mode column gives us information about the type of lock that is being requested. From the screenshots above we see RangeS-S locks which represent a share range lock and IS locks which represent Intent Shared locks. The request_status column displays whether the lock has been granted or whether the lock is waiting to be acquired. The request_session_id  shows the session_id that is requesting the lock. This DMV is the best place to go when you need to identify the exact locks that are being held or pending for individual requests. You might need this information when you are troubleshooting severe blocking or deadlocking problems on your server. • MySQL - Why would SHOW SLAVE HOSTS cause a binlog dump?

  We're getting loads of binlog files in our MySQL 5.0.x. We have a normal master/slave replication thing going with 1 master, 1 slave. Looking at /var/log/mysql.log, nearly 90% of the time the replicator connects and does a SHOW SLAVE HOSTS causes a bin log dump. For example: 7020 Query SHOW SLAVE HOSTS 7020 Binlog Dump Log: 'mysql-bin.029634' Pos: 13273 However when I do a SHOW SLAVE HOSTS on the mysql myself, I get no results. Occasionally when the replicator does a SHOW SLAVE HOSTS, mysql will hang for hours. I see nothing in the /var/log/syslog at the same time... What's going on here? How can I debug this more? For the record the MySQL master and slave servers are ubuntu dapper.

• The Boss Answer: What is a relational database?

  I'm mostly a system administrator and I don't directly work with databases other than installing them, setting up accounts, granting privileges, and so on. I realized that if The Boss walked up to me and asked, "What is a relational database?" I probably couldn't give a satisfactory answer... I'd maybe mumble something about data being stored and organized by categories which you can query with a special programing language (i.e., SQL). So could someone give a good "Boss Answer" for what a relational database is? And maybe how its different than just storing data on a file server? Bonus points for clever but accessible analogies and explaining tables, columns, records and fields. I'd define a "Boss Answer" as a quick one (maybe two) paragraph explanation for non-technical folks... mostly your Boss, on those rare occasions they actually ask you what it is you do all day.

• ODI 11g – How to override SQL at runtime?

  Following on from the posting some time back entitled ‘ODI 11g – Simple, Powerful, Flexible’ here we push the envelope even further. Rather than just having the SQL we override defined statically in the interface design we will have it configurable via a variable….at runtime. Imagine you have a well defined interface shape that you want to be fulfilled and that shape can be satisfied from a number of different sources that is what this allows - or the ability for one interface to consume data from many different places using variables. The cool thing about ODI’s reference API and this is that it can be fantastically flexible and useful. When I use the variable as the option value, and I execute the top level scenario that uses this temporary interface I get prompted (or can get prompted to be correct) for the value of the variable. Note I am using the <@=odiRef.getObjectName("L","EMP", "SCOTT","D")@> notation for the table reference, since this is done at runtime, then the context will resolve to the correct table name etc. Each time I execute, I could use a different source provider (obviously some dependencies on KMs/technologies here).   I'm using haproxy 1.5dev3 and I was wondering if there is any possible way to grab uri variables from a request to reappend the query on the end of a redirect url? What I'm trying to do is redirect from: http://www.domain.com/page/example.htm?id=1234567 to: http://www.domain.com/frame/newpage.cfm?id=1234567 redirect prefix doesn't work properly as it tries to append /page/example.htm to the end of the redirect url. Can I do some sort of rewrite to accomplish this? It would be awesome if you could use uri and queries as variables for redirection/pool selection like on F5. Please help...Thanks!

• Can / should I prevent my domain controller doing forward lookups for remote users?

  I have a Windows Server 2003 server in the office. I VPN into the LAN remotely. My VPN has a virtual NIC with the Windows Server as the primary DNS since it is a domain controller. When connected to the VPN and I do a nslookup or simply browse the web my VPN's DNS (the office's Windows Server) provides the DNS answers - I beleive becuase it has DNS forwarders so queries it cant answer it forwards and then relays the answer. This is the desired behaviour for workstations in the office (they should query their domain controller first). However for remote VPN users this is not desirable - I do not want my remote office's server to answer DNS queries it is not the authority of (which happends to be 192.168.x.x). Is there any way I can configure this?

  Does anyone know of a shell that would show a series of breadcrumbs as I navigate into/out of various servers, like this: Home > Build Machine > Vagrant > Docker-base Hopefully it could auto-detect logging in and out of various boxes and display the hostnames. Perhaps with a simple "no circular links", one could just try and monitor the hostname, but I don't know if there is a shell that can easily act as a 'parent' to the other shells on these various systems so that it can query hostname and/or other item. Any thoughts?

• Tuning Red Gate: #5 of Multiple

  In the Tuning Red Gate series I've shown you how to look at a current load on the system and how to drill down to look at historical analysis of the system. I've also shown how you can see the top queries and other information from the current status of the system. I have one more thing I can show you before we need to start fixing things and showing how that affects the data collected, historical moments in time. For example, back in Post #3 I was looking at some spikes in some of the monitored resources that were taking place a couple of weeks back in time. Once I identify a moment in time that I'm interested in, I can go back to the first page of Monitor, Global Overview, and click on the icon: From this you can select the date and time you're interested in. For example, I saw some serious CPU queues last week: This then rolls back the time for all the information that's available to the Global Overview and the drill down to the server and the SQL Server instance there. This then allows me to look at the Top Queries running at this point, sort them by CPU and identify what was potentially the query that was causing the problem right when I saw the CPU queuing This ability to correlate a moment in time with the information available to you in the Analysis window makes for an excellent tool to investigate your systems going backwards in time. It really makes a huge difference in your knowledge. It's not enough to know that something happened at a particular time. You need to know what it was that was occurring. Remember, the key to tuning your systems is having enough knowledge about them. I'll post more on Tuning Red Gate as soon as I can get some queries rewritten. I'm working on that.

• Setting up kerberos for SQL Server 2008 R2 not taking effect

  I am trying to configure Kerberos for my SQL Server (the database engine domain account). I have executed the following command: SETSPN -A MSSQLSvc/MyDBServer:1433 MyDomain\SQLServerService Replacing MyDBServer with the FQDN of the server and replacing MyDomain\SQLServerService with the name of my account. I then ran the query: SELECT s.session_id , c.connect_time , s.login_time , s.login_name , c.protocol_type , c.auth_scheme , s.HOST_NAME , s.program_name FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s JOIN sys.dm_exec_connections c ON s.session_id = c.session_id This returns NTLM. So it's not Kerberos. What am I mising? The delegation tab is available for the account, so the spn bit worked perfectly fine. Is it not required to set some settings in the delegation tab? I've seen this in the case of setting kerberos for Sharepoint 2010 (which I intend to setup). Thanks

• Writing a Book, and Moving my Blog

  I started blogging about SQL Server here at SQLblog back in July, 2009 and it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it a lot. Then later, after a series of blog posts about the Query Optimizer, I was invited to write an entire book about that same topic. But after a few months I realized that it was going to be hard to continue both blogging and writing chapters for a book, this in addition to my regular day job, so I decided to stop blogging for a little while.   Now that I have finished the last chapter of the book and I am working on the final chapter reviews, I decided to start blogging again.   Hi All, Is there anyway to get complete error message using LogParser? When I run the following query: logparser -i:EVT -o:NAT "SELECT TimeGenerated,EventID,Message from System WHERE EventTypeName='Error event'" I get the following output: 2009-09-02 19:35:44 7000 The USB Mass Storage Driver service failed to start due to the following error: %%1058 The full "Message" in EventViewer is: Description: The USB Mass Storage Driver service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. How can I obtain complete message using logparser?

• Writing your own Makefile for OpenBSD ports

  I have an OpenBSD box running Python 2.6. I want to install py-setuptools, but that package is built against 2.5. I was curious as to what the Makefile for py-setuptools [Someone with rep, fix me please][http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/ports/devel/py-setuptools/Makefile?rev=1.13;content-type=text%2Fx-cvsweb-markup ] looks like, to see if it mentioned anything about Python 2.5 as a dependency. I did not find anything version-dependent. I typed make install in /usr/ports/devel/py-setuptools on a whim, and it blew up because of failed missing Python 2.5 dependency. That is expected. My question is, How do I modify the Makefile to build against Python 2.6 ? I came across this in the man pages [please fix me][http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=port-modules&sektion=5&arch=&apropos=0&manpath=OpenBSD+4.6#CORE+MODULES] , but I am still clueless how to specify what version to build against. Also, I dont see anything that actually installs the egg.

• What is spreadsheet useful for?

  I have been in computer business for 15 years in various roles (sysadmin, developer, researcher), and I have never encountered someone using excel for something more advanced than for formatting tables, or as an ad-hoc database that could have been maintained in a text-file. I had to do heavy data-processing and plotting and for that I used some perl scripts + gnuplot, got tiredof it, and went over to R eventually. 2D spreadsheet just didn't seem well-suited for doing statistical analyses over 5-dimensional datasets (not to mention that it produces UGLY plots). I attempted to use spreadsheet for time-tracking, and found out that I would have better been served by a relational database, so I gave up on using excel for that too. For example, it's important to consistently name tasks, and I needed to find out unique task names in a given column across several sheets (I had one timesheet for each month). How do you make such "query" in a program that essentially evaluates independent cells and has little notion of relations between them? So, what are spreadsheets useful for? Why do they have a bunch of mathematical stuff built into them when, AFAICT, people use them mostly as table formatters or bad substitutes for databases?
