• What issues lead people to use Japanese-specific encodings rather than Unicode?

  At work I come across a lot of Japanese text files in Shift-JIS and other encodings. It causes many mojibake (unreadable character) problems for all computer users. Unicode was intended to solve this sort of problem by defining a single character set for all languages, and the UTF-8 serialization is recommended for use on the Internet. So why doesn't everybody switch from Japanese-specific encodings to UTF-8? What issues with or disadvantages of UTF-8 are holding people back? EDIT: The W3C lists some known problems with Unicode, could this be a reason too?

  I have installed Ubuntu 14.04, I have installed Eclipse using Ubuntu Software Center. But Eclipse is not opening, when I click it is not opening or showing any error message it is very silent.   I seem to remember that linked lists, recursion, pointers, and memory management are all good examples of stumbling blocks - places where the aspiring programmer typically ends up spending significant time trying to understand a concept before moving on and improving, and many end up giving up and not improving. I'm looking for a complete/comprehensive list of these types of stumbling blocks, in rough estimated order of difficulty to learn, with the goal of making sure that an educational program for programmers is structured to properly guide students through them Is this information available somewhere? Ideally, the difficulty to learn will be measured in some sort of objective manner (ie, % of students which consistently fail to learn the concept) What sources are most appropriate for obtaining this information?

• How to deal with 'bad' decision forced on you regarding basic software for your product

  Here is my situation, our product used to support several of the major databases. Now management has decided to move all products to MaxDB (aka SapDB previously), and even if we keep supporting some of the previous dbs, all new installations are on MaxDB. I am sure MaxDB is a great db and can support huge SAP installations. But from the point of view of a software developper, its a nightmare. Every time you need to do something not trivial (write an stored procedure, some fancy trigger...) and you google for some info, you get like 0.1% of the hits you would with things like MySql, PostgreSql or MSSql. Mailing lists are nearly non existant. SAP does support it commercially but it is not clear wether we'll buy support. And the decision cannot be rolled back. The product works with MaxDB, but with lots of inefficiency on development and a lot of frustration, is there something one could do?

• How do I rename a mounted Truecrypt volume?

  When I mount the Truecrypt file on my USB drive it shows up as truecrypt1. The volume is FAT, using mtools to rename a volume label involves e2label /dev/sdbx, however truecrypt1 does not map to a physical partition. fdisk -l does not show the volume partition (only the physical USB device), and df -h lists the volume path as /dev/mapper/truecrypt1. Finally, using the Nautilus 'Rename' context action, gives the error: "Sorry, could not rename "truecrypt1" to "towel": Operation not supported by backend". Apparently this can be done in Win, but how can I rename this volume in Ubuntu? As Nicolas said, specifying the mount point names the partition the same. The truecrypt GUI does not remember the mount point I set, so I specify the mount points in a script which I placed in my main menu. #!/bin/bash gksudo truecrypt /media/usbdrive/encryptedfile /media/securedata/

Yukon Optima 88E8059 [PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller with AVB] (rev 11) After system being suspended the sky2 driver loads but does not enable the NIC. I have noticed that it happens when PC is left suspended for longer period of time (few houres) Trying to reproduce it I have tried to load the sky2 driver with 'modprobe sky2'. Unfortunately typing 'ifconfig -a' for the onboard ethernet adapter does not list the driver once the sky2 driver is loaded. I have searched internet and I found some information about a bug in kernel. Hovewer it was reported in 2010 so I hope it has been fixed. • How to make the switch to C++11?

  I've been programming in C++ for a while now, but mostly thinks centered around the low-level features of C++. By that I mean mostly working with pointers and raw arrays. I think this behavior is known as using C++ as C with classes despite me only having tried C recently for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised how languages like C# and Java hide these details away in convenient standard library classes like Dictionaries and Lists. I'm aware that the C++ standard library has many convenience containers like vectors, maps and strings as well and C++11 only adds to this by having std:: array and ranged loops. How do I best learn to make use of these modern language features and which are suitable for which moments? Is it correct that software engineering in C++ nowadays I'd mostly free of manual memory management? Lastly, which compiler should I use to make the most of the new standard? Visual Studio has excellent debugging tools, but even VS2012 seems to have terrible C++11 support.

• Prevent gnome-shell's dash from listing Recent Items

  I am using gnome-shell in Ubuntu 11.10. I am getting annoyed when dash search lists Recent Items. I have tried many ways to prevent it like Deleting activity.sqlite and activity.sqlite-journal files under ~/.local/share/zeitgeist Adding all the possible entries in Activity Log Manager to prevent application logging Specifying time range in Activity Log Manager to forget my activities. But none of the methods are working. The recent items list is still populated. Is there any way to tell dash not to list Recent Items while searching, other than the above methods? Or is there any way to delete the recent items list?

• Where have the Direct3D 11 tutorials on MSDN have gone?

  I've had this tutorial bookmarked for ages. I've just decided to give DX11 a real go, so I've gone through that tutorial, but I can't find where the next one in the series is! There are no links from that page to either the next in the series, or back up to the table of contents that lists all of the tutorials. These are just companion tutorials to the samples that come with the SDK, but I find them very helpful. Searching MSDN from google and the MSDN Bing search box has turned up nothing, it's like they've removed all links to these tutorials, but the pages are still there if you have the URLs. Unfortunately, MSDN URLs are akin to youtube URLs, so I can't just guess the URL of the next tutorial. Anyone have any idea what happened to these tutorials, or how I can find the others?

• How to get rid of bookmarks in synced Chromium

  I'm using three Ubuntu systems in an irregular pattern, and since I use Chrome/Chromium anyway and have a Google account, I decided to make my life a bit easier and sync them. Now I am having a problem: When I want to remove bookmarks from my lists, they not only come back when I switch the machine, they double. By now, I have up to ten identical bookmarks in the list and I spend a lot of time scrolling over them. Is there any way to remove them permanently? EDIT: Apps, too.
