• The enterprise vendor con - connecting SSD's using SATA 2 (3Gbits) thus limiting there performance

  When comparing SSD against Hard drive performance it really makes me cross when folk think comparing an array of SSD running on 3GBits/sec to hard drives running on 6GBits/second is somehow valid. In a paper from DELL (http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/PowerEdge-PowerVaultH800-CacheCade-final.pdf) on increasing database performance using the DELL PERC H800 with Solid State Drives they compare four SSD drives connected at 3Gbits/sec against ten 10Krpm drives connected at 6Gbits [Tony slaps forehead while shouting DOH!]. It is true in the case of hard drives it probably doesn’t make much difference 3Gbit or 6Gbit because SAS and SATA are both end to end protocols rather than shared bus architecture like SCSI, so the hard drive doesn’t share bandwidth and probably can’t get near the 600MiBytes/second throughput that 6Gbit gives unless you are doing contiguous reads, in my own tests on a single 15Krpm SAS disk using IOMeter (8 worker threads, queue depth of 16 with a stripe size of 64KiB, an 8KiB transfer size on a drive formatted with an allocation size of 8KiB for a 100% sequential read test) I only get 347MiBytes per second sustained throughput at an average latency of 2.87ms per IO equating to 44.5K IOps, ok, if that was 3GBits it would be less – around 280MiBytes per second, oh, but wait a minute [...fingers tap desk] You’ll struggle to find in the commodity space an SSD that doesn’t have the SATA 3 (6GBits) interface, SSD’s are fast not only low latency and high IOps but they also offer a very large sustained transfer rate, consider the OCZ Agility 3 it so happens that in my masters dissertation I did the same test but on a difference box, I got 374MiBytes per second at an average latency of 2.67ms per IO equating to 47.9K IOps – cost of an 240GB Agility 3 is £174.24 (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/240gb-ocz-agility-3-ssd-25-sata-6gb-s-sandforce-2281-read-525mb-s-write-500mb-s-85k-iops), but that same drive set in a box connected with SATA 2 (3Gbits) would only yield around 280MiBytes per second thus losing almost 100MiBytes per second throughput and a ton of IOps too. So why the hell are “enterprise” vendors still only connecting SSD’s at 3GBits? Well, my conspiracy states that they have no interest in you moving to SSD because they’ll lose so much money, the argument that they use SATA 2 doesn’t wash, SATA 3 has been out for some time now and all the commodity stuff you buy uses it now. Consider the cost, not in terms of price per GB but price per IOps, SSD absolutely thrash Hard Drives on that, it was true that the opposite was also true that Hard Drives thrashed SSD’s on price per GB, but is that true now, I’m not so sure – a 300GByte 2.5” 15Krpm SAS drive costs £329.76 ex VAT (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/300gb-seagate-st9300653ss-savvio-15k3-25-hdd-sas-6gb-s-15000rpm-64mb-cache-27ms) which equates to £1.09 per GB compared to a 480GB OCZ Agility 3 costing £422.10 ex VAT (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/480gb-ocz-agility-3-ssd-25-sata-6gb-s-sandforce-2281-read-525mb-s-write-410mb-s-30k-iops) which equates to £0.88 per GB. Ok, I compared an “enterprise” hard drive with a “commodity” SSD, ok, so things get a little more complicated here, most “enterprise” SSD’s are SLC and most commodity are MLC, SLC gives more performance and wear, I’ll talk about that another day. For now though, don’t get sucked in by vendor marketing, SATA 2 (3Gbit) just doesn’t cut it, SSD need 6Gbit to breath and even that SSD’s are pushing. Alas, SSD’s are connected using SATA so all the controllers I’ve seen thus far from HP and DELL only do SATA 2 – deliberate? Well, I’ll let you decide on that one.

• X locks up with konqueror on comics.com

  If I browse to comics.com using konqueror under KDE on Fedora 11, X will, after a delay, lock up. The mouse will move, but no keyboard input is recognized, and the screen does not react to the mouse passing over objects on screen. I am able to ssh into the machine and issue shutdown -r now and have that work. The machine is a Dell XPS M1330 with Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c), and Fedora 11 is fully updated. Visiting the same site in Firefox does not cause a lockup. I am booting with nomodeset since it won't boot into X otherwise. I tried the other two accel options: EXA (still locks up) and XAA (X won't start). Any suggestions on how I can debug this? bugzilla

  Hello I didn't find the answer in Clonezilla's site/mailing list archives. Maybe someone has already seen this issue and knows how to recover from it: On a test host, using www.partedmagic.com, I created two partitions: One to hold an OS I wish to use for testing (/sda1), and a second partition to hold images (/sda2) After trying out Windows7, I used CloneZilla to restore an XPSP3 image, but I get the following error message when rebooting: "Reboot and select proper boot device" Could it be that Clonezilla didn't save/restore the MBR?   I wanted to allow access to www.mydomain.com/login through ssl only. E.g.: Whenever someone accessed http://www.mydomain.com/login, I wanted him to be redirect to https://www.mydomain.com/login so it's impossible for him/her to access that site without SSL. I accomplished this by adding the following lines to the virtual host for www.mydomain.com on port 80 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^80$ RewriteRule ^/login(.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}/login$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" Now, I want to restrict using SSL for www.mydomain.com. That means, whenever someone accessed https://www.mydomain.com, I want him to be redirected to http://www.mydomain.com (for performance reasons). I tried this by adding the following lines to the virtual host of www.mydomain.com on port 443 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" But when I now try to access www.mydomain.com/login, I get an error message that the server has caused to many redirects. That does make sense. Obviously, the two RewriteRules are playing ping-pong against each other. How could I work around this?

• Submit form to another domain

  I need to access the result of submitting a form to a website. There is a web site where you complete a form and it posts the information using ajax and then tells you if you have their service in the are or not. I'd like to be able to do this from my web page, which means posting the information required by the form to their server and getting the result. The problem is I get "403 Forbidden", I think it's because the "Origin" being a different domain. Is there anyway that I can the response from the server on my website? I thought about php_curl (used once with google docs api) but would like to know what you guys think it's the best way.

• IIS7 folder permissions

  I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

• How do I protect business critical data against fire?

  We have 72 hard drives that contain our webcast inventory. The number is increasing. We're located in a frame building and we are afraid of not only fire, but catastrophic fire. I've priced fireproof safes that hold to the required 125F for hard drives. Their price is through the roof. Seems to me if we made backups of each of the hard drives and stored them off-site somewhere, or contracted with an online backup storage company, we might run up a bill buying backup drives that would approach the $7,000 cost of the safe! What's the best way to protect our data from the risk of fire?

• How to disable "Automatically search for drivers and install" in Windows 7

  I connected my TI-89 to my Windows 7 system, and apparently it is not plug-and-play. There was a link to a Windows configuration setting made available that gave the option to automatically search their windows site for drivers and automatically install them each time i connect an unrecognized device. Well, I selected that link with the intention of it being temporary and just that one time. That didnt work and the location/install of a driver was not successful. How can I reset that setting to not automatically install whatever drivers it thinks might be fitting? I cannot find that configuration setting when I looked for it recently.

• Problem to install Apache 2.4.2 in Ubuntu 12.04

Set the 'ServerName' directive globally to suppress this message" and when I typed top at terminal, the apache is not there. I also tried to go to http://localhost/ or 127.0.0.1 or even 127.0.1.1 it showed "Can't establish connection to server ..." message. ps: I checked the error log and it showed "[Fri Jul 27 15:49:00.703901 2012] [proxy_balancer:emerg] [pid 20781] AH01177: Failed to lookup provider 'shm' for 'slotmem': is mod_slotmem_shm loaded?? • automatic IIS worker process recycle fails

  The server is set to its default configuration to recycle the app pool every 1740 minutes. When this happens the following message is logged: A worker process with process id of '1234' serving application pool 'XX' has requested a recycle because the worker process reached its allowed processing time limit. Directly after logging this message, the web site is unresponsive. The only way to get it back online is by running iisreset manually. Does anyone know a fix for this behavior, other than turning the recycle feature off? Is it a known problem?

  Hi, I am trying to install some software in a fresh install of Linux dnoseda 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux. I already set the variables http_proxy, https_proxy and ftp_proxy and wget works perfectly. But when I try with apt-get it blocks trying to conect directly to the site, without the proxy. Or the other behavior that I got is a lots of 407 authentication errors. But the wget of those packages works perfectly. It's something missing? Can you help me? thanks in advance.

  So Here I am talking with my Program lead, about technology, and how while my father is the VP of a major company, he still doesn't have a blackberry, or a smart phone. and I think it's funny. Most people would say it's a generational thing. That because he's older, he dosen't accept technology, and that's why. I have trouble swallowing that because this is the same man, who bought a satellite radio for his car, and made sure that the printer for the house was networked so that his and my mom's laptop could print wirelessly from the living room through their wireless network. I think it has to do with more with necessity, and partially with finical responsibility. My father is very financially conciencious. Think about it yourself. you pay for internet at your home. You have internet access at your office. But if you get a smart phone you're going to pay almost the same amount just for that access. A lot of people take it as just another fixed cost... I'm one of those. I don't even think about it, as I check my facebook from the bus, train, or even while sitting in traffic... The convience of having connection everywhere outweigh the financial responsible person screaming at in the back of my mind. However This conversation lead us to another venue of discussion.... what happens when the power dies. if you left your charger at home, or you phone or navi just stops working... are you going to be able to continue on as you did when it was working... let take the navi as an example... if your navi stops working, how many of you know how to use a map, and navigate? can you even find where you are on a map using the cross streets that your stopped at? This is a skill that unfortunatelly is overlooked these days in the child rearing process. Most people don't see the value, while some others can't do it themselves, so how can they teach their offspring? Take another example.... what if your phone gets lost... or stolen, or you drive over it? do you have the numbers in their memorized? are they recorded somewhere? I know that if it weren't for google sync I wouldn't have them backed up... not sufficiently. And what good does that do if you're in timbuckto and your phone dies, think you can get on the internet to look up those numbers? Don't get me wrong. I'm the first to see the value in technology, and am willing to pay the price to not have to wait for prices to come down. I will pay extra to have that newest thing right now. but let me tell you what.... I know that should I ever procreate it will be a requirement for my offspring (children) to learn how to do something manually before I'll let them use technology. Food for thought??   Hello everyone I have a SD memory card which is of local manufacturer it allows to read & copy from it but not write as it is now write-protected so i want to format that card but could not. To format this card I have tried 1) DD command 2) mkfs -f vfat command 3) creating registry entry under storage device policy in window with write value 0 4) disk part command in window to clear attributes in which it show all attributes are clear ie no write protection 5) I format card in windows through control panel - administrative tools- computer management - disk management, then it show as formatted but when I tried to create new partition it give CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK error 6) I downloaded a format utility from transcend site and formatted first it shows write protected again doing format it formats and tells to remove and reinsert after reinsertion it shows the previous data as it is

• Acer Aspire 3680 Wireless Signal Problem

  I am using Acer Aspire 3680. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista, and the wireless did not work by default. I installed the "Atheros Wireless LAN Driver" on this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3680.html The result, the wireless APs are successfully scanned. However, when I tried to join a network, even with 5/5 signal, an error message showed up diagnosing signal too little. I restarted as Ubuntu, and wireless worked perfectly, with same computer position. Even more confusing, When I moved to the kitchen (2 meters close to the router), the wireless connected, when I move back to my room, wireless failed on Vista and worked on Ubuntu. It is clearly the driver problem. Acer laptops seems come with pre-installed drivers, but after re-installation, they are all gone. (I can't find the original Acer backup disc) Please do not answer "move closer to the AP" and something related to "interference", as wireless worked with Ubuntu's default driver.

  I have a (text) file containing a list of web site addresses. I know that I can open the file in an editor and then copy-paste the addresses to the browser address bar. That means, if I have ten addresses in that file, I will need ten copy-paste operations, which must be tedious. But is there a way to ask the browser (preferably Google Chrome or Firefox) to open all of them in one go in different tabs? I am using Ubuntu, if that is related in any way to the solution you provide.

• Munq is for web, Unity is for Enterprise

  The Unity Application Block (Unity) is a lightweight extensible dependency injection container with support for constructor, property, and method call injection. It’s a great library for facilitating Inversion of Control and the recent version supports AOP as well. However, when it comes to performance, it’s CPU hungry. In fact it’s so CPU hungry that it makes it impossible to make it work at Internet Scale. I was investigating some CPU issue on a portal that gets around 3MM hits per day and I found unusually high CPU. Here’s why: I did some CPU profiling on my open source project Dropthings and found that the highest CPU is consumed by Unity’s Resolve<>(). There’s no funky use of Unity in the project. Straightforward Register<>() and Resolve<>(). But as you can see, Resolve<>() is consuming significantly high CPU even after the site is warm and has been running for a while. Then I tried Munq, which is a basic Dependency Injection Container. It has everything you will usually need in a regular project. It boasts to be the fastest DI out there. So, I converted all Unity code to Munq in Dropthings and did a CPU profile and Whala!   There’s no trace of any Munq calls anywhere. That proves Munq is a lot faster than Unity.

• Perl not working with Nginx via fastcgi, cannot decipher error logs

  Im running CentOS 6.2, Nginx 1.2.3 following these Linode Instructions to get Perl to work with Nginx I've done everything upto the point of testing an actual Perl file. When I do this the browser says: The page you are looking for is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. And my Nginx error-log shows the following: 2012/09/02 22:09:58 [error] 20772#0: *1 connect() failed (111: Connection refused) while connecting to upstream, client: 192.168.1.102, server: localhost, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://127.0.0.1:8999", host: "192.168.1.10:81" Im stuck at this point. Im not sure if it matters but I also have spawn-fcgi and php-fpm to serve up PHP files on this site, but that should be 100% seperate from the perl-fastcgi setup, different port, etc.. How can I troubleshoot this?

• DNS server redirect users on first visit

  I am looking for a DNS level solution, that redirects a user to a specific IP on the first visit, than directs them to the correct IP on subsequent visits. So the idea is, for example, if a user visits "malicioussite.com", the first time they try to resolve that DNS name, it resolves to the IP of an internal web server, showing them a warning. On subsequent resolves, the users would get the actual IP, so they can visit the site. How can this be achieved? I am really flexible on what I can use, as long as its on the DNS level.
