Here is my Code def printList(stringlist): empty = [] if stringlist is None: print empty else: print stringlist def add (stringlist, string): string = [] if string is None else string if stringlist is not None: stringlist.insert(0, string) else: stringlist.append(1) it somehow appears "AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'append'" I was originally looking for the code to be run like this: >>> myList = None >>> printList(myList) [] >>> for word in ['laundry','homework','cooking','cleaning']: myList = add(myList, word) printList(myList) [laundry] [homework, laundry] [cooking, homework, laundry] [cleaning, cooking, homework, laundry]

  • How to reduce compile time with C++ templates

    - by Shane MacLaughlin
I'm in the process of changing part of my C++ app from using an older C type array to a templated C++ container class. See this question for details. While the solution is working very well, each minor change I make to the templated code causes a very large amount of recompilation to take place, and hence drastically slows build time. Is there any way of getting template code out of the header and back into a cpp file, so that minor implementation changes don't cause major rebuilds?

  • What would be a better way of doing the following

    - by thecoshman
if(get_magic_quotes_gpc()) { $location_name = trim(mysql_real_escape_string(trim(stripslashes($_GET['location_name'])))); } else { $location_name = trim(mysql_real_escape_string(trim($_GET['location_name']))); } That's the code I have so far. seems to me this code is fundamentally ... OK. Do you think I can safely remove the inner trim(). Please try not a spam me with endless version of this, I want to try to learn how to do this better.

  • Templates in C#

    - by John Doe
I know generics are in C# to fulfill a role similar to C++ templates but I really need a way to generate some code at compile time - in this particular situation it would be very easy to solve the problem with C++ templates. Does anyone know of any alternatives? Perhaps a VS plug-in that preprocesses the code or something like that? It doesn't need to be very sophisticated, I just need to generate some methods at compile time.

  • Splash Screen Example

    - by Kovu
Hi, I only want a simple Splash Screen Example. Get the Code, Insert my picture, add 2 lines of code to load and finish. But all I can google is so complex, that is too much. I only want a form with a picture that goes more and more transparent until it hides automaticly and my window is shown. I tried the "prettygoodsplashscreen" from Codeproject, but don't work for me. Lang is c#.net 2.0

  • Can I use the [] operator in C++ to create virtual arrays

    - by Shane MacLaughlin
I have a large code base, originally C ported to C++ many years ago, that is operating on a number of large arrays of spatial data. These arrays contain structs representing point and triangle entities that represent surface models. I need to refactor the code such that the specific way these entities are stored internally varies for specific scenarios. For example if the points lie on a regular flat grid, I don't need to store the X and Y coordinates, as they can be calculated on the fly, as can the triangles. Similarly, I want to take advantage of out of core tools such as STXXL for storage. The simplest way of doing this is replacing array access with put and get type functions, e.g. point[i].x = XV; becomes Point p = GetPoint(i); p.x = XV; PutPoint(i,p); As you can imagine, this is a very tedious refactor on a large code base, prone to all sorts of errors en route. What I'd like to do is write a class that mimics the array by overloading the [] operator. As the arrays already live on the heap, and move around with reallocs, the code already assumes that references into the array such as point *p = point + i; may not be used. Is this class feasible to write? For example writing the methods below in terms of the [] operator; void MyClass::PutPoint(int Index, Point p) { if (m_StorageStrategy == RegularGrid) { int xoffs, yoffs; ComputeGridFromIndex(Index, xoffs, yoffs); StoreGridPoint(xoffs, yoffs,p.z); } else m_PointArray[Index] = p; } } Point MyClass::GetPoint(int Index) { if (m_StorageStrategy == RegularGrid) { int xoffs, yoffs; ComputeGridFromIndex(Index, xoffs, yoffs); return GetGridPoint(xoffs, yoffs); // GetGridPoint returns Point } else return m_PointArray[Index]; } } My concern is that all the array classes I've seen tend to pass by reference, whereas I think I'll have to pass structs by value. I think it should work put other than performance, can anyone see any major pitfalls with this approach. n.b. the reason I have to pass by value is to get point[a].z = point[b].z + point[c].z to work correctly where the underlying storage type varies.

  • Response, Result, Reply, which is best?

    - by Robert Gould
I'm refactoring some client-server code and it uses the terms Response, Result & Reply for the same thing (an answer from the server). And although its not really that important it's become hard to guess which word to use while writing new code, so I'd like to unify the three terms into one and do the appropriate refactoring, but I'm not sure which word is the "best", if there is such a thing. Any suggestions based on precedence and standards towards naming for this case?

  • What is the best WebControl to create this

    - by balexandre
    current output wanted output current code public partial class test : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!Page.IsPostBack) populateData(); } private void populateData() { List<temp> ls = new List<temp>(); ls.Add(new temp { a = "AAA", b = "aa", c = "a", dt = DateTime.Now }); ls.Add(new temp { a = "BBB", b = "bb", c = "b", dt = DateTime.Now }); ls.Add(new temp { a = "CCC", b = "cc", c = "c", dt = DateTime.Now.AddDays(1) }); ls.Add(new temp { a = "DDD", b = "dd", c = "d", dt = DateTime.Now.AddDays(1) }); ls.Add(new temp { a = "EEE", b = "ee", c = "e", dt = DateTime.Now.AddDays(2) }); ls.Add(new temp { a = "FFF", b = "ff", c = "f", dt = DateTime.Now.AddDays(2) }); TemplateField tc = (TemplateField)gv.Columns[0]; // <-- want to assign here just day gv.Columns.Add(tc); // <-- want to assign here just day + 1 gv.Columns.Add(tc); // <-- want to assign here just day + 2 gv.DataSource = ls; gv.DataBind(); } } public class temp { public temp() { } public string a { get; set; } public string b { get; set; } public string c { get; set; } public DateTime dt { get; set; } } and in HTML <asp:GridView ID="gv" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="false"> <Columns> <asp:TemplateField> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("a") %>' Font-Bold="true" /><br /> <asp:Label ID="Label2" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("b") %>' Font-Italic="true" /><br /> <asp:Label ID="Label3" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("dt") %>' /> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> </Columns> </asp:GridView> What I'm trying to avoid is repeat code so I can only use one unique TemplateField I can accomplish this with 3 x GridView, one per each day, but I'm really trying to simplify code as the Grid will be exactly the same (as the HTML code goes), just the DataSource changes. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thank you.

  • Does Windows Installer provide a method to update applications?

    - by Jephir
Does Windows installer provide a built-in method for updating applications, or do I have to write this myself in my application code? For example, ClickOnce can automatically update my application for me; I do not have to write code specifically for this in my application. Is similar functionality available in Windows Installer or is it purely for installation purposes only?

  • C++ - Is it possible to implement memory leak testing in a unit test?

    - by sevaxx
I'm trying to implement unit testing for my code and I'm having a hard time doing it. Ideally I would like to test some classes not only for good functionality but also for proper memory allocation/deallocation. I wonder if this check can be done using a unit testing framework. I am using Visual Assert btw. I would love to see some sample code , if possible !

  • Is it any loose coupling mechanism in Objective-C + Cocoa like C# delegates or C++Qt signals+slots?

    - by Eye of Hell
Hello. For a large programs, the standard way to chalenge a complexity is to divide a program code into small objects. Most of the actual programming languages offer this functionality via classes, so is Objective-C. But after source code is separated into small object, the second challenge is to somehow connect them with each over. Standard approaches, supported by most languages are compositon (one object is a member field of another), inheritance, templates (generics) and callbacks. More cryptic techniques include method-level delagates (C#) and signals+slots (C++Qt). I like the delegates / signals idea, since while connecting two objects i can connect individual methods with each over, without objects knowing anything of each over. For C#, it will look like this: var object1 = new CObject1(); var object2 = new CObject2(); object1.SomethingHappened += object2.HandleSomething; In this code, is object1 calls it's SomethingHappened delegate (like a normal method call) the HandleSomething method of object2 will be called. For C++Qt, it will look like this: var object1 = new CObject1(); var object2 = new CObject2(); connect( object1, SIGNAL(SomethingHappened()), object2, SLOT(HandleSomething()) ); The result will be exactly the same. This technique has some advantages and disadvantages, but generally i like it more than interfaces since if program code base grows i can change connections and add new ones without creating tons of interfaces. After examination of Objective-C i havn't found any way to use this technique i like :(. It seems that Objective-C supports message passing perfectly well, but it requres for object1 to have a pointer to object2 in order to pass it a message. If some object needs to be connected to lots of other objects, in Objective-C i will be forced to give him pointers to each of the objects it must be connected. So, the question :). Is it any approach in Objective-C programming that will closely resemble delegate / signal+slot types of connection, not a 'give first object an entire pointer to second object so it can pass a message to it'. Method-level connections are a bit more preferable to me than object-level connection ^_^.

I have tried naming the constuctor fields to create the object. when I compile my code on this line this.Mobile samsungPhone = new Mobile("Samsung", 1, 2, "verizon", 3 "GPS"); I get this error: not a statement, what does this mean?? UPDATED CODE! my code: /** * to write a simple java class Mobile that models a mobile phone. * * @author (Lewis Burte-Clarke) * @version (14/10/13) */ public class Mobile { // type of phone private String phonetype; // size of screen in inches private int screensize; // menory card capacity private int memorycardcapacity; // name of present service provider private String serviceprovider; // type of contract with service provider private int typeofcontract; // camera resolution in megapixels private int cameraresolution; // the percentage of charge left on the phone private int checkcharge; // wether the phone has GPS or not private String GPS; // instance variables - replace the example below with your own private int x; // The constructor method public Mobile(String mobilephonetype, int mobilescreensize, int mobilememorycardcapacity, int mobilecameraresolution,String mobileGPS, String newserviceprovider) { this.phonetype = mobilephonetype; this.screensize = mobilescreensize; this.memorycardcapacity = mobilememorycardcapacity; this.cameraresolution = mobilecameraresolution; this.GPS = mobileGPS; this.serviceprovider = newserviceprovider; this.typeofcontract = 12; this.checkcharge = checkcharge; // you do not use this ones during instantiation, you can remove them if you do not need or assign them some default values Mobile samsungPhone = new Mobile("Samsung", 1, 2, "verizon", 3, "GPS"); 1024 = screen size; 2 = memory card capacity; 3=resolution; GPS = gps; "verizon"=service provider; typeofcontract = 12; checkcharge = checkcharge; } } // A method to display the state of the object to the screen public void displayMobileDetails() { System.out.println("phonetype: " + phonetype); System.out.println("screensize: " + screensize); System.out.println("memorycardcapacity: " + memorycardcapacity); System.out.println("cameraresolution: " + cameraresolution); System.out.println("GPS: " + GPS); System.out.println("serviceprovider: " + serviceprovider); System.out.println("typeofcontract: " + typeofcontract); } } class mymobile { public static void) { Mobile Samsung = new Mobile("Samsung", 1, 2, "verizon", 3, "GPS"); Mobile Blackberry = new Mobile("Blackberry", "3.", "4","8", "GPS"); Samsung.displayMobileDetails(); Blackberry.displayMobileDetails(); } } any answers and replies would be greatly appreciated!

  • SMS + Web app: Providers of SMS "Long codes" for use by U.S. carrier subscribers within U.S.?

    - by fourh
Q.: How to get a cellular phone SMS "Long code" for use by U.S. carrier subscribers within U.S.? Background: I'm building a web app that receives queries from/sends answers to cell phones. The app design (and business model) expects to communicate with cell devices via SMS, addressing the web app via an SMS "Long code" (VMN or MSISDN). The mobile phone subscribers will be sending/receiving within the U.S. and using U.S. carriers. Long codes are not available within the U.S. cellular services.

  • Possible to add an EventListener to a function for Actionscript 3?

    - by Tom
I'm trying to setup something like Aspect Oriented Programming in Actionscript 3, basically the only thing I need to be able to do is something like this: SomeClass.getMethod("methodName").addEventListener(afterMethodExecuted, function() { //run code }); This way I can run code after (or before) any method in any class has run, allowing numerous new possibilities. How should I implement this?

  • c#: can you use a boolean predicate as the parameter to an if statement?

    - by Craig Johnston
In C#, can you use a boolean predicate on its own as the parameter for an if statement? eg: string str = "HELLO"; if (str.Equals("HELLO")) { Console.WriteLine("HELLO"); } Will this code output "HELLO", or does it need to be: string str = "HELLO"; if (str.Equals("HELLO") == true) { Console.WriteLine("HELLO"); } If there is anything else wrong with the above code segments, please point it out.
