  • Difference between Document-oriented-DB and Bigtable clones

    We are looking for a suitable storage engine for our weblog history data. We looked at Bigtable's paper and understand it is suitable to us well. However, I also understand that Document-oriented-DB such as MongoDB seems to provide a little more powerful schema power -- i.e, it can model our data as well. I wonder how nowadays ppl choose a scalable NoSQL DB --- I read enough articles like "we looked at A, B and C, and we decided to use C". But I'd like to see some benchmark number. What I am saying is that if MongoDB and the like can provide same level of performance as Bigtable clones, why don't web companies choose it (preparing to deal with various potentially more complex data problem)? Thanks, By the way, I read an article (which convinced me at the moment) saying Cassandra does not fit the M/R operation, any comments?

But I need "table" property to specify indexes. What's going on here? I'm almost driven crazy!

Array.ForEach(myItems.Where(FILTER-IT-HERE).ToArray(),MY-ACTION); Solution 2: Do RETURN in MY-ACTION if the item is not up to the mustard. At my class, I set a member var: NSString *m_movieName; ... @property(nonatomic, retain) NSString *m_movieName; At viewDidLoad method, I assign a default name to this var: -(void)viewDidLoad{ NSString *s1 = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"Forrest Gump"]; self.m_movieName = s1; ... [s1 release]; [super viewDidLoad] } At some function, I want to give a new name to this var, so I did like: -(void)SomeFunc{ NSString *s2 = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"Brave Heart"]; //[self.movieName release]; // ??????? Should perform here? self.m_moiveName = s2; [s2 release]; } I know, NSString* var is just a pointer to an allocated memory block, and 'assign' operation will increment this memory block's using count. For my situation, should I release m_movieName before assigning a value to it? If I do not release it (via [self.movieName release]), when and where will the previous block be released?   • Alerting for incorrect cell values

    My problem: I have two ranges R16 and R01. These ranges were set up by swiping each range and then renaming them in the upper left panel of the sheet. Each range requires users to fill in each cell with a value. R16 requires users to enter a number of 0 through 5. The range R01 requires a value of 0 or 1 to be entered. NO cell can be left blank in any cell within these two ranges. These ranges and requirements are specific to this sheet only. It would be nice if at the time of user entering a number, an error message appeared like [invalid entry] if the value inputted was outside parameters set. For example, in R16, if someone entered 12 or -1 they would be alerted. Finally when the user presses a button on the page to use these values in a separate process, it is essential to check that no cell is left blank. I am trying to find a way to halt the running of the marco (via the button) if these parameters above are not met. Thank you

    Here is a problem: In my bash scripts I want to source several file with some checks, so I have: if [ -r foo ] ; then source foo else logger -t $0 -p crit "unable to source foo" exit 1 fi if [ -r bar ] ; then source bar else logger -t $0 -p crit "unable to source bar" exit 1 fi # ... etc ... Naively I tried to create a function that do: function save_source() { if [ -r $1 ] ; then source $1 else logger -t $0 -p crit "unable to source $1" exit 1 fi } safe_source foo safe_source bar # ... etc ... But there is a snag there. If one of the files foo, bar, etc. have a global such as -- declare GLOBAL_VAR=42 -- it will effectively become: function save_source() { # ... declare GLOBAL_VAR=42 # ... } thus a global variable becomes local. The question: An alias in bash seems too weak for this, so must I unroll the above function, and repeat myself, or is there a more elegant approach? ... and yes, I agree that Python, Perl, Ruby would make my file easier, but when working with legacy system, one doesn't always have the privilege of choosing the best tool.

    I'm trying to get some code I was passed up and running. It appears to use the Hibernate framework. I've gotten past most of the errors tweaking the configuration, but this one has me dead stumped. It's trying to connect to two databases: gameapp and gamelog. Both exist. It seems to have issues connecting to gamelog, but none connecting to gameapp (later in the init, it connects to and loads other DBs just fine). Below, I've pasted the error and exception stack dump.     Hi there guys, I'm trying to create interceptors for specific methods but I'm having a hard time. I can't bind an aspect to a specific method. I create the faicilities most of examples show but it still doesn't work. Can anyone give me an example of how to do this? I prefer xml conifguration, if possible.   • How can I authenticate when using the Bugzilla Perl API in a script?

    Working from the Bugzilla API, I've written a quick Perl script to clone a Bugzilla Product (recreating all the Components under their new Product). The Bugzilla Perl API is quite easy to use from the command line. I could have just worked on the database directly, but I wanted a longer-term solution. Another option was the webservice, but I thought I'd try using the API directly this time. The one problem I'm running into is authenticating as my Bz admin user so I can create the new components. Looking at Bugzilla's Bugzilla.pm file, I see that they just run login() from a Bugzilla::Auth object. I'm not sure how to get the username and password in there. I suppose I could just add the script to the Bugzilla admin interface... Can any of you point me in the right direction?

I want to add sunspot_rails to my project to add search functionality (with the hope of deploying the project with Heroku). I'm using Rails 3. My various other attempts to diagnose the problem included: installing sunspot in addition to sunspot_rails.     I have a table where each row has 13 TD elements. I want to show and hide the first 10 of them when I toggle a link. These 10 TD elements all have an IDs with the prefix "foo" and a two digit number for its position (e.g., "foo01"). What's the fastest way to select them across the entire table? $("td:nth-child(-n+10)") or $("td[id^=foo]") or is it worth concatenating all of the ids? $("#foo01, #foo02, #foo03, #foo04, #foo05, #foo06, #foo07, #foo08, #foo09, #foo10") Is there another approach I should be considering as well?
