  • Any Alternatives to NCommon?

    I like the way NCommon saves me from dealing with all the plumbing required to do DDD with NHibernate. I like it so much that it I am seriously considering it to be part of my default architecture in new projects.   • Alternatives to Ctags/Cscope with Objective-c?

    Are there any alternatives to ctags and cscope with Objective-c support. This does pertain to cocoa development, so inevitably it seems I will be using Xcode (and probably should). I was just wondering what are my Vim options. Maybe there is some type of plugin system like eclim, but for xcode? EDIT So it seems that other than updating ctags to support objective-c, I'm out of luck. Does anyone know if cscope is the same?

    Delphi developers has several tools (several alternatives to ASP.NET) for building web applications. While No.1 framework is Intraweb, there is a lot of interest around ExtJS, that has 2 incarnations: 1) the opensource ExtPascal 2) the closedsource Raudus Now the products are different, Raudus never supports the latest ExtJS version (while ExtPascal does because as far as I read it "almost automatically updates itself to the latest ExJS version"), Raudus "seems" much RAD (much similar to Intraweb from the RAD point of view). Anyway why chose one or the other? Why Raudus (since it is free) cannot become Open Source? Or does Raudus use ExtPascal behind the scenes?

To avoid hard coding the web site in my Silverlight application I use code like this: WebClient webClient = new WebClient(); Uri baseUri = new Uri(webClient.BaseAddress); UriBuilder uriBuilder = new UriBuilder(baseUri.Scheme, baseUri.Host, baseUri.Port); // Continue building the URL ... It feels very clunky to create a WebClient instance just to get access to the URL of the XAP file. Are there any alternatives?

  • Alerting system for Munin

    I am very satisfied with munin as a monitoring tool (as I only have a simple 2-server setup) but its alerting system is very annoying as you can only configure it to send an e-mail upon every check which generates a warning or an error. It seems like the only option is to use Nagios but in Debian it has Apache as a dependency and I already use nginx on my monitoring machine. All I want is to have the possibility to silence/acknowledge the alarm while I am working on a fix, so that I don't get bombarded with e-mails. Nagios seems like an oversized solution for that anyway. Is there any simple solution for that or am I the only one who feels like he needs such a tool?

    What alternatives are there to GAE, given that I already have a good bit of code working that I would like to keep. In other words, I'm digging python. However, my use case is more of a low number of requests, higher CPU usage type use case, and I'm worried that I may not be able to stay with App Engine forever. I have heard a lot of people talking about Amazon Web Services and other sorts of cloud providers, but I am having a hard time seeing where most of these other offerings provide the range of services (data querying, user authentication, automatic scaling) that App Engine provides. What are my options here?

    While I can see the value and usefulness of regular expressions, I also find that they are extremely complicated and difficult to create and debug. I am often at the point where I find their usefulness is offset by the difficulty in creating expressions. I am a bit astonished by the fact that there is nothing quite like them and that there hasn't been an effort to recreate them use a more verbose or less arcane syntax. so, are regular expressions here to stay? are there alternatives that are gaining traction? do other people just ignore them and write hundreds of lines of string compare functions?

I've heard there's a program called memcached but there's no compiled version of it on the site, besides some people think there are real disadvantages of it. Now I wanna ask you. What are alternatives, pros and cons of different approaches? Is memcached painpul for sysadmins to install? Is it difficult to embed it to the existing infrastructure from the perspective of a sysadmin? What about using a database to hold temporary data between web app transitions?     Is there something like MLGPO (Multiple Local Group Policy Objects) for Windows Server 2003 R2? I have a 2003 Terminal Server that isn't part of a domain/AD and I'm trying to set local group policies which applies only to certain users and/or groups and the policies differ between those entities. I wanted to avoid using the file permissions trick for on C:\WINDOWS\system32\GroupPolicy as that's an all-or-nothing approach. I can't upgrade this box to Windows Server 2008 as the software used is only supported and only works on 2003. Are there any third-party tools to achieve this?

However I'm not a big java fan, although I can live with that, I would like to know if there're reasonable alternatives for the android virtual machine. I've done a medium sized project using clojure, however from the reviews I read, it's very slow when running on android. How about scala ?   • Are there Adaptive Replacement Cache patent-free alternatives?

    An open source high-performance project I'm working on needs to keep a cache of parsed/compiled files. A plain LRU or a plain LFU wouldn't fit. Plain LRU wouldn't work as there will be remote batch/spider processes hitting the service regularly. Plain LFU wouldn't work because content will age. ARC seems like the perfect solution but since IBM holds patents to it at least one open source project dropped it. Are there any (good enough) alternatives? EDIT: I'm not looking for exactly the same thing, just something that could handle those two situations. Perhaps some simple strategy with timestamps and sources. There have to be many programmers who faced this situation before. That's why the "good enough" bit.

  • Simple, centralized user management on a small LAN - NIS or LDAP?

    I'm setting up a small LAN for my team. It will, for all intents and purposes, not be connected to any external networks. I would it to have centralized control of user accounts (at least, I think I'd like that; I'm also considering using puppet, so theoretically I could just push /etc/passwd changes, or something). The number of machines is fixed, but not very small. Mostly they're 'attached' to a single user, but sometimes people work remotely on someone else's box; and there are a couple of servers. I've read this question, but my scenario is much simpler (even simpler than in this question) and I'd like to do something (relatively) quick, with not much hassle, but not a dirty totally-insecure hack. Is NIS relevant for my scenario? If not, what's the most hassle-free way to set up LDAP (or LDAP+Kerberos) to achieve the same? Notes: I have no experience with setting up either NIS or LDAP. We use Debian-flavored Linux distributions, mainly Kubuntu 12.04 (not my choice, but that's the way it is).
