• Database checksum features - redundant? useful?

  Just about every mainstream DB has a feature to calculate checksums per page, per sector, or per record. Now for a DB that does full recover after any crash, like PostgreSQL, is a checksum even useful? There will be no data loss as long as the xlog is ok, no matter what kind of corruption happened to the data itself, as the redo log is replayed every committed transaction will be restored. So checksums are useless on restore. Doesn't the filesystem or disk keep checksums anyway to detect corruption? So unless the checksum is per record, all it does is tell you there is corruption - which the OS should be yelling at you the minute you try to read it - so useless in operation? I can't imagine how a checksum can be helpful in any sane database - but since they all use them - I'd say that's just failure of imagination on my part. So how is it useful?

• On a Mac, how can I find all files on a NTFS partition that have the same name, given case *in*sensi

  Here's the deal, I have a huge mess of files on an external drive that is formatted as NTFS. I wish to copy all of these files onto my MacBook Pro. NTFS, like sane filesystems, is case sensitive. HFS is not. There is, somewhere in the mess of tens of thousands of files and directories, one or more 'duplicates' in the eyes of HFS. Theses are preventing me from copying the entire directory of data onto my mac. (MacOSX rather unhelpfully throws a general error explaining the problem, but not the exact file. It also doesn't give you an option to skip) What is the best approach to solve this? Does anyone know a tool that can find files and directories that have the same case-insensitive name?

• Elastic Load Balancer & SSL termination

  I am setting up a Rails app on AWS that: 1) all traffic must ssl encrypted 2) will highly fluctuate in traffic on a weekly basis 3) will by maintained by someone that is a stronger coder than sysadmin, but will be responsible for both I am thinking that SSL termination on an elastic load balancer backed by small ec2 instances running nginx and unicorn A small subset of the requests will take longer than 10s, because of this I am also debating using 'thin' instead of 'unicorn'. My question is this: Is this sane? I am stepping into a quagmire of cost, maintainability, security or performance problems?

• How do I troubleshoot CanoScan LIDE20 on Ubuntu 9.10 in VirtualBox?

  This may be a VirtualBox question more than anything else. The host OS is Win7, which sees the scanner, but has no drivers for it. VirtualBox sees & recognizes the scanner as "Cannon Scan" and shows "state captured" when I hover over USB devices. Searching gives me many happy reports of this particular scanner being well supported, and that SANE should work with it immediately (also listedin the Supported Hardware List. I get "no devices available" from XSane... and I'm not sure where else I can check. I'd like to see if VirtualBox is telling the truth and find out if the USB port is actually being fed into the virtual OS. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where/how to do that in Ubuntu? Or other bright ideas. I'm starting with a little project to add some zing to my beginner linux studies - I'm sure I haven't checked some obvious things, because I don't know them yet. ;)

• What tools can be used to monitor a web application? Beyond "doesn't 404"

  I have an internal web application that has recently gone through a major version upgrade. I would like to monitor this application over the weekend and look for 'soft' errors. I will still need to spot check things by hand, but there are some common failure patterns that I think I can automate. Examples include data with bad formatting, blank rows in tables (indicates missing non-critical data), patterns for identifiers ("TEST" means one of my devs left a testing feed on), etc. I think there are applications out there that can be scripted to do things like: 1. log in 2. Go to $URL 3. select 3rd link in $LIST or $PATTERN 4. Check HTML from that link for $PATTERNS 5. Email report Are these goals sane? What applications/tools can help with this?

• TeamViewer: How to disable color dithering for low-bit-depth screen settings

  I am using Terminal Services and TeamViewer a lot to access other computers, partly over slow networks. The problem described below is not affected by which of the two remote access services I am using. When accessing Windows 7 Professional machines, a great deal of text is hard to read as the background is dithered. Even for exactly the same colors, Windows 2003 does not seem to dither at all, but to choose the closest available color. I strongly prefer the latter, as I don't care for the exact colors, I just want to be able to read easily. I am not sure whether this is operating system-related. The programs on the remote systems do not allow me to change the color choices for the various backgrounds to anything sane. Is there a way to disable this color dithering using some target operating system setting that will do the trick for both Terminal Services and TeamViewer?

• I want Lotus Domino to only send one email to users that are both recipients and members of a cc'ed lotus group.

  Lotus Domino 7 and now Lotus Domino 8.5 The scenario: A@mycompany writes an email to b@internet and cc's it to group@mycompany. A@mycompany is a member of group@mycompany. With the initial email Domino is intelligent enough to not send the email which a@mycompany just wrote to a@mycompany again. But when b@internet answers to all (a@mycompany + group@mycompany) then a@mycompany gets this email twice, because he is not only the author but also a member of group@mycompany. During the smtp session the email is sent once with the recipients set to a@mycompany and group@mycompany and a single esmtp id. So Domino should well be able to see that the mail should only be sent to a@mycompany once. Can I make Lotus Domino behave in this sane fashion?

• Howto maintain an EXT3 filesystem

  Lately I had several servers which encountered a write error on an EXT3 filesystem and as a result of that remounted the filesystem read-only. Understandably on a production server this causes severe problems. On a reboot the filesystem where fixed but on large partitions this takes a lot of time. After the filesystem was fixed, correcting several errors, the server runs well again. What can I do to minimize the rate at which this happens? I can't seem to find much information on periodically checking the filesystem(s) on a running server. Is it possible to change the way in which EXT3 / the system handles write errors? What would be a sane solution. All servers which this is regarding to are running CentOS Linux 5.4 or 5.5.

• How to troubleshoot memory card read?

  The built in memory card reader in my laptop mounts SD cards as read-only only. This happens both in Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Most of the time. Ever now an then it works. After a some non-deterministic combination of uninstalling/reinstalling/disabling/enabling of the driver with the mandatory reboots the card reader works for a while. Is there any sane way to troubleshoot if it's an actual hardware problem, or just a matter of drivers? I've tested it with several SD cards, that work just fine in other devices. • Decent bookmark manager/tool for Firefox.

  The built in bookmarks UX for Firefox is dismall. How do I bookmark a page without opening the whole shebang and shoosing a bookmark folder? I can simply 'star' the page, but then it ends up in Unsorted Bookmarks. I can move a bookmark folder to the bookmark toolbar, where I have instant access to all bookmarks in that folder, but I can no longer bookmark a page in that folder in the normal way, because when I have to click the damned bookmark folder icon and manually type in the URL and title. What add-ins are there that can make bookmarking in Firefox humanly sane?

• -w test on OS X gives command not found error

  I'm writing a bash script which I'm testing on OS X though it will ultimately run on a standard Linux environment and running into a weird error. I have tests like this in my script: if [ ! -w $BP ]; then echo "'$1' not writable" exit 1 fi Which seems pretty sane to me and works fine under Linux but when trying to test on OS X I get the following error message: startSvr.sh: line 135: [: missing `]' startSvr.sh: line 135: -w: command not found So is this a case of OS X not supporting the -w test or is there some other reason this isn't working for me? e.g. environment

  Sites like ebay and even superuser stop working properly when I use opera 11.00. Menus stop working everywhere from ebay to godaddy. Hovering on a menu item doesn't expand it, no sub menu slides out. This makes a large number of very popular websites unusable. Am I right in assuming this is a javascript issue? I use opera for the turbo feature (I have tested opera with and without turbo so it's not turbo's fault) because I'm on mobile broadband until I get my phone line sorted out. Turbo helps me save money, as well as allowing me to surf at a sane speed. Is there a firefox or chrome equivalent to opera turbo that doesn't cost money? I'm using Opera 11.00, build 1156.

• Straight-forward to Virtualise with XEN or KVM on IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G?

  I want to built a virtualised Server Environment using XEN or KVM. The virtual machines should be purely debian systems - so XEN or KVM should be a sane choice. Now while buying servers, I am confronted with the fact, that the vendors obviously only support commercial solution. I think, on a good server, one should be able to install uncommercial software as well - but of course sometimes systems have hardware, that requires drivers, that are not found in the OS Community. So I am asked the question: Is it straight-forward to use Debian with IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G with Debian - or even virtualising the IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G using XEN or KVM. I am sure there will always be a way to achieve this goal - but this way might have a high milage - so I am not asking, whether this is theoretical possible, but whether this should be straight-forward and practically easy to do, no major headaches to be expected.

• Register a domain with NIC

  I recently bought a .es domain for the purpose of creating a domain hack. I registered the domain with esreg.com (SANE Systems, apparently). My card was charged, but the domain is listed as not registered. I have not yet been able to get in contact with them. Their website seems to have a small form to register the site and to specify the nameservers, but when I fill it out it says "You have to specify the NIC handles first." I don't know how to get those. They have for example a box that says "Owner" with an example of SK86-ESNIC-F4. I have another website so I may have this information, but I don't know how to get it.

• SVN: Working with branches using the same working copy

  We've just moved to SVN from CVS. We have a small team and everyone checks in code on the trunk and we have never ever used branches for development. We each have directories on a remote dev server with the codebase checked out. Each developer works on their own sandbox with an associated URL to pull up the app in a browser (something like the setup here: Trade-offs of local vs remote development workflows for a web development team). I've decided that for my current project, I'll use a branch because it would span multiple releases. I've already cut a branch out, but I am using the same directory as the one originally checked out (i.e. for the trunk). Since it's the same directory (or working copy) for both the branch and the trunk, if for e.g. a bug pops up in the app I switch to the trunk and commit the change there, and then switch back to my branch for my project development. My questions are: Is this a sane way to work with branches? Are there any pitfalls that I need to be aware of? What would be the optimal way to work with branches if separate working copies are out of the question? I haven't had issues yet as I have just started doing this way but all the tutorials/books/blog posts I have seen about branching with SVN imply working with different working copies (or perhaps I haven't come across an explanation of mixed working copies in plain English). I just don't want to be sorry three months down the road when its time to integrate the branch back to the trunk.

• Remapping keyboard to get extra cursor keys - but why stick to VIM standard hjkl

  Inspired from VIM I recently remapped my keyboard layout to get extra keys for cursor movement. Being fluent in both QWERTY and DVORAK, it came quite natural to me to remap the DF and JK keys rather than the VIM standard hjkl keys. Here is my reasoning It enables me to quickly identify cursor keys since F and J are physically marked on my keyboard I'm using two hands for movement rather than one. I guess from DVORAK I learned to appreciate shifting between hands rather than using primarily one hand. It maps well with the Kinesis keyboard mapping http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/advantage.htm that I use occasionally. I feel I'm using my strongest fingers. I don't have to stretch my right index finger to read H as I would using the VIM layout. However, since I am still doing green field explorations on the cursor key remapping, I'd like others to share their experiences and/or criticize my suggested mapping. PS. • Huge google impression drop after cleaning html

  Good morning, I am the webmaster of a non-profit organization that donates grants to colorectal cancer research projects and funds various colorectal cancer information campaigns. We have three domains: www.fundacioolgatorres dot org (Catalan) www.fundacionolgatorres dot org (Spanish) www.olgatorresfoundation dot org (English) So what happened? I redesigned olgatorresfoundation on the 20th and the fundacionolgatorres on the 30th of May. In both cases, exactly two days later, the number of impressions on both dropped to a halt. Granted, we did not have the traffic of Microsoft, but a 90% decrease a disaster of incredible proportions for us. My only real changes were cleaning up the old ineffective HTML to a cleaner form (mostly moving away from redundant table construction to a table-less view). Possible secondary question: If it is so that Google sees it as a major overhaul and decides to drop the pagerank sharply, does it come back to pre-change levels if the content "checks out" or will the page start over from scratch earning those pagerank points (which would mean that we would have to wait 6 months for the pages to recover to the level they had two weeks ago)? • Code Generation and IDE vs writing per Hand

  I have been programming for about a year now. Pretty soon I realized that I need a great Tool for writing code and learned Vim. I was happy with C and Ruby and never liked the idea of an IDE. Which was encouraged by a lot of reading about programming.[1] However I started with (my first) Java Project. In a CS Course we were using Visual Paradigm and encouraged to let the program generate our code from a class diagram. I did not like that Idea because: Our class diagram was buggy. Students more experienced in Java said they would write the code per hand. I had never written any Java before and would not understand a lot of the generated code. So I took a different approach and wrote all methods per Hand (getter and Setter included). My Team-members have written their parts (partly generated by VP) in an IDE and I was "forced" to use it too. I realized they had generated equal amounts of code in a shorter amount of time and did not spend a lot of time setting their CLASSPATH and writing scripts for compiling that son of a b***. Additionally we had to implement a GUI and I dont see how we could have done that in a sane matter in Vim. So here is my Problem: I fell in love with Vim and the Unix way. But it looks like for getting this job done (on time) the IDE/Code generation approach is superior. Do you have equal experiences? Is Java by the nature of the language just more suitable for an IDE/Code generated approach? Or am I lacking the knowledge to produce equal amounts of code "per Hand"? • File format for animated scene

  I've got a custom OpenGL based rendering engine and I'd like to add support for cinema-type scene animation. The artist that is helping me uses primarily 3DSMax. I'd like a file format for exporting and importing this data. I'm also in need of a file format for skeletal animation data, which may have an impact here. I've been looking at MAXScript to manually export this stuff, which would buy me the most flexibility, but I have virtually no experience with 3DSMax itself, so I get a little lost when it comes to terminology. So I'd like to know what file formats exist for animated scene data, and whether they are appropriate for my use (my fear is that they will be way too broad for my fairly simple needs.) The way I view animated scene data is basically a bunch of references to [animated] models with keyframe-based matrices describing their orientation over time. And probably some special camera stuff to handle perspective. I might also want some event type stuff for adding/removing objects. Is this a sane concept?

• Swapping from NHibernate to Entity Framework &ndash; Sanity Check

  Now I’m not an expert in either of these techs.  I have a nice framework for unit of work / repository built with NHibernate.  Works pretty well.  I use FluentNhibernate to do the mappings.  Works well.  Takes very little code to get going with a DB back OO model. So why swap? Linq.  In Entity Framework you get much better linq support.  Visibility. I have no idea what's really happening with NHibernate….its a cloud of mystery most of the time.  You have to read all the blogs, mailing lists, etc to know what's going on. So, EF 4.0 looks like pretty good….  it has reasonably good support for mapping POCOs.  Wrapping UnitOfWork and Repository around it seems ok. Only thing I haven’t liked too much is having to explicitly load lazy loading entities. So…. am I sane?  is EF the way to go?  or is NHibernate going to suddenly release the next generation of coolness?  Is there any other major gotchas of using EF over NHibernate?
