    I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light.     I have a list of items I want to buy. The items are offered by different shops and different prices. The shops have individual delivery costs. I'm looking for an optimal shopping strategy (and a java library supporting it) to purchase all of the items with a minimal total price. Example: Item1 is offered at Shop1 for $100, at Shop2 for $111. Item2 is offered at Shop1 for $90, at Shop2 for $85. Delivery cost of Shop1: $10 if total order < $150; $0 otherwise Delivery cost of Shop2: $5 if total order < $50; $0 otherwise If I buy Item1 and Item2 at Shop1 the total cost is $100 + $90 +$0 = $190. If I buy Item1 and Item2 at Shop2 the total cost is $111 + $85 +$0 = $196. If I buy Item1 at Shop1 and Item2 at Shop2 the total cost is $100 + $10 + $85 + $0 = 195. I get the minimal price if I order Item1 at Shop1 and Item2 at Shop2: $195 Question I need some hints which algorithms may help me to solve optimization problems of this kind for number of items about 100 and number of shops about 20. I already looked at apache-math and its optimization package, but I have no idea what algorithm to look for.

  • Black GUI with minimal desktop icons appeared after powering on my desktop PC

    My computer powered on fine but after POST, a dialog box appeared with a red "X" and it gave some sort of warning. It had a long file name, I cannot recollect the entirety of it but it was something like C:/system32/desktop....After clicking ok, the GUI was totally black with only the Recycle Bin icon in the Desktop, and the Taskbar was there as well. I restarted it, and the GUI was back to normal with the icons and wallpaper in their proper place. I'm sure if I knew more of that file name in the dialog box, that would be helpful to those reading this but should I be concerned that this happened?

    What's the best way to rip a Blu-ray disc to an Xbox 360 compatible format, while preferably maintaining surround sound and as little video encoding as possible? As far as I can tell, the 360 technically supports both AVC and VC-1 (though if at those bit rates is questionable), so I'm kind of hoping that you could do it without actually re-encoding the video at all and, instead, just processing the audio and the re-muxing everything together in a new file.

I don't want to install cygwin because it takes lot of space. Moreover, I need to make it communicate with a rsync daemon on Linux, therefore alternatives to rsync on windows won't help. Thanks

    I recently bought myself a ASUS EEE 1000HE and I intend to use it for note-taking and light browsing at the University. The machine has a 10" screen so the interface needs to be very compact. I've already tried: EEEbuntu: Very nice driver support and out of the box experience. But I feel that it is too slow booting and the general experience is too heavy in my opinion. Moblin 2: Looks very cool, boots just fine but is way too unstable to use. Also find it annoying that I can't find hotkey documentation anywhere. Any Netbook OS recommendation welcome (although those specific to my model would be great). There is an entire jungle of distributions out there, so if you've been on a safari, please share your experience.

    To convert an MKV to AVI, I do two things. The first thing I do is this: ffmpeg -i filename.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.avi or this: ffmpeg -i filename.mkv -sameq -acodec copy output.avi Either of these will convert the MKV to an AVI, but the problem is that the video does not play smoothly for some reason. That's fine though, because if I do one more thing it gets fixed: ffmpeg -i output.avi -vcodec mpeg4 -b 4000k -acodec mp2 -ab 320k converted.avi After I do this then the file plays without problem. I had success doing it this way for one file, but then I tried it on another file, and there is a slight, but noticeable loss in video quality.     I've read the documentation on Chef twice over. I still can't wrap my head around it's concept because they skip but fundamentals and jump to complex deployments with chef-server. Using chef-solo and possibly knife, is there a simple way to provision a server and deploy? I may be wrong, but it seems like with my cookbooks prepped, this should be very simple. knife rackspace server create --flavor 1 --image 112 That provisions my server. I can optionally pass --run-list "recipe[mything]", but how do my cookbooks in ~/my_cookbooks actually get on the server? Do I have to manually transfer them? That seems counterproductive.

  • Production deployment to EC2 with minimal downtime

    I have a simple web application deployed on a large instance with EC2. I now want to deploy the latest code to this server but I want to do this in a way which minimizes downtime and is a smooth as possible for the end user. Here is my plan: Fire up another large instance Install all the software layers on that instance Restore and attach an EBS drive to the instance Deploy our latest production ready code on the new instance Run all tests (including manual testing of the application) (If tests pass) Put a "Site Under Maintenance" notice on the live site. Backup the EBS instance on the live site Detach the EBS instance from the new server and replace with the latest backup Use ec2-associate-address to move the IP address to the new instance Sit back and wait for traffic to start flowing though the new instance Terminate the old instance Does this seem like a good strategy? Are there any tutorials or books that might cover this topic? I have already read Cloud Application Architectures by George Reese, which is an excellent book, but does not cover deployment. Additionally, I know that there are tools that can help with this like RightScale or enStratus which I will use when I start using more than one instance.

Here I'm returning column 7. How can I paste the cells and auto increment the value where "7" is. In other words I need to paste that summary formula on several hundred cells and change the number 7 for each.

    What is the absolute, bare minimum, no-hassle, hopefully idiot-proof way of setting up a local smtp server? If you're going to say postfix, what are these alledgedly bare minimum, idiot proof steps to setting it up? I'm sort of amazed at how difficult it seems to find this anywhere. I need: a locally hosted smtp server that sends mail to the internet. no tls or saslauth or whatever. only allows mail to come from localhost. no relays. It seems like there should be some software package somewhere where you install, set up an account and then you have a local smtp server. I'm not a sysadmin. People say postfix is dead simple but maybe I'm doing it wrong, all the setup docs I see are quite complicated, I actually don't have a spare hour to spend debugging a mailserver. I just want to send mail to the internet. Is it really that hard?

I can reinstall software, and I keep data files elsewhere. When I use acronis home backup software to backup my "critical" files it seems to choose the entire partition. Updates are mostly browser cache files and the like. Or, after a crash, should I just reinstall windows. I dread the hours of windows updates that would require. Thanks.

  • Minimal Lync 2013 Setup

    I would like to install a Lync 2013 server at home. What would be the minimum requirements for it? I've seen the requirements and they seem pretty hefty, just want to know what I need for a basic set up. This will be for up to 5 users. I would like users to be able to connect from outside the network as well. From what I've been able to find, it looks like I'll need 3 servers. A domain controller, a lync front end server, and an edge server (for external connectivity, and it will need 2 network cards). Is that really all necessary? And how would they need to be connected (I've never connected a machine with multiple network cards)? Do they all have to be separate machines, or can I use VMs?
