• When is it time to buy a new hard drive, and what considerations go into buying a new hard drive?

  I've had my current hard drive for about 4-5 years now, and I've never had a problem with it before, but now it's making whirring noises. It's done this before and, last time, the noise did go away the next day, but I have accumulated quite a bit of information that I wouldn't want to lose on the drive. HD Tune Pro and Berlac Advisor both said the drive was healthy, and I wouldn't want to get a new one unless it was absolutely necessary or was going to show drastic performance improvements. My only knock against the drive would be that Visual Studio takes longer to load than I'd like it to. HD Tune Pro says the average read speed is 54.3MB/s. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it seems about average compared to similar drives on http://www.hdtune.com/testresults.html. Model #: WDC WD5000AAJS-22YFA0 So, should hard drives be replaced after a certain amount of time? Has mine reached that point? Would a new hard drive be any faster?

• Allow access only to one website

  Hey. I'd like to allow access on a computer connected directly to the internet to one website ONLY. The solution of IE's "Content advisor" or firefox's "FoxFilter" isn't good enough because it actually downloads the data and just don't display it. I want to block the traffic before the requests are sent. How is it possible? Thanks. Edit: OS is windows xp. The browser can be firefox, iexplorer, chrome... It doesn't matter. The computer is connected directly to the modem.

An remote attacker could perform a man-in-the-middle attack to gain access to a RDP session. Affected Software is Microsoft RDP 5.2 and below. My server uses RDP 7.1, is this alarm a false alarm? • The Future of Life Assurance Conference Recap

  I recently wrote about the Life Insurance Conference held in Washington, DC last month. This week I was both an attendee and guest speaker the 13th Annual Future of Life Assurance Conference held at The Guoman Tower in London, UK. It's amazing that these two conferences were held on opposition sides of the Atlantic Ocean and addressed many of the same session topics and themes. Insurance is certainly a global industry! This year's conference was attended by many of the leading carriers and CEOs in the UK and across Europe.The sessions included a strong lineup of keynote speakers and panel discussions from carriers such as Legal & General, Skandia, Aviva, Standard Life, Friends Provident, LV=, Zurich UK, Barclays and Scottish Life. Sessions topics addressed a variety of business and regulatory issues including: Ensuring a profitable future Key priorities in regulation The future of advice The impact of the RDR on distribution Bancassurance Gaining control of the customer relationship Revitalizing product offerings In addition, Oracle speakers (Glenn Lottering and myself) led specific sessions on gearing up for Solvency II and speeding product development through adaptive rules-based systems. The main themes that played throughout many of the sessions included: change is here, focusing on customers, the current economic crisis has been challenging and the industry needs to get back to the basics and simplify - simplify - simplify.   „Proaktiv“, das bedeutet soviel wie: handeln statt abwarten, Initiative statt Reaktion. So möchte auch die Aktion „Get Proactive“ für Oracle Premier Support Kunden einen vorausschauenden, offensiven Umgang mit Support-Fällen fördern. Die automatisierte Unterstützung der Systeme, die Oracle Partner und Kunden einen deutlichen Vorsprung vor der Konkurrenz verschaffen kann, umfasst drei Bereiche: Sie heißen Prevent, Resolve und Upgrade. „Prevent“ umfasst alle Maßnahmen der Vorsorge: Deren Ziel ist es, ein mögliches Problem aufzudecken und zu lösen, noch bevor es es sich negativ auswirkt. So können beispielsweise produktbezogene Security Alerts zugeschickt werden, ebenso auf das jeweilige System zugeschnittene Patch-Empfehlungen und Risiko-Warnungen. „Resolve“ steht für den Anspruch, auftretende Probleme schneller und zielgerichtet zu lösen. Notwendig sind dafür die passenden Diagnosetools und -maßnahmen. Spezifische Informationen für individuelle Systeme stehen im Product Information Center zur Verfügung. Zudem helfen Auto-Detect-Werkzeuge dabei, Lösungen für bekannte Probleme zu finden. Wertvolle Hinweise bieten auch die Partner und User in der Online Support Community und natürlich die umfangreiche Wissensbasis in MOS. „Upgrade“ bündelt, wie der Name schon sagt, Schritte zur Risikominimierung durch Unterstützung beim Upgrade. Jeder kann dabei selbst die jeweilige Umgebung auf zertifizierte Produkte prüfen. Tipps und Tricks verrät der Upgrade Advisor mit Best Practices für verschiedenste Produkte, Prozesse und Versionen. • Simple issue tracker for 1-2 developers

  (I'm not sure whether this pertains to the realm of programmers@se or so@se) I'm currently working mostly alone on a project (in Java). I'm mostly alone as I have an advisor that gives me high level instructions on what to do, and will seldom make any code contribution. She will code in a couple of acceptance tests from time to time, though. I've never used an Issue Tracker before, and was thinking about starting to use one now, as I'd like to have a place where I can log possible bugs I find and keep track of them in a centralized manner. Would it be possible to integrate the issue tracker with Eclipse, better yet. So here are the constraints: It's NOT a open-source project. Our code is not to be shared with anyone! we are and will be using Subversion; we have our own Subversion server and we will keep using this same Subversion server; it must be free; it must allow at least 2 users. What is your advice on what to pick? I'm looking for the simplest solution available!
