• named_scope + average is causing the table to be specified more then once in the sql query run on po

  I have a named scopes like so... named_scope :gender, lambda { |gender| { :joins => {:survey_session => :profile }, :conditions => { :survey_sessions => { :profiles => { :gender => gender } } } } } and when I call it everything works fine. I also have this average method I call... Answer.average(:rating, :include => {:survey_session => :profile}, :group => "profiles.career") which also works fine if I call it like that. However if I were to call it like so... Answer.gender('m').average(:rating, :include => {:survey_session => :profile}, :group => "profiles.career") I get... If I were to just remove the include from average it works but it isn't really practical because average is actually being called inside a method which gets passed the scoped. So there is some times gender or average might get called with out each other and if either was missing the profile include it wouldn't work. So either I need to know how to fix this apparent bug in Rails or figure out a way to know what scopes were applied to a ActiveRecord::NamedScope::Scope object so that I could check to see if they have been applied and if not add the include for average.

I have two tables - Chords - |id|chord|name|rating|artist_id| Artists - |id|artist| (the relations : chords : belongs_to :artist artists : has_many :chords ) And in the index page for "chords" i want to display chord,name,rating from Chords table AND artist from the Artists table this is the code for the chrod's index.html.erb : <table border="1"> <%@chords.each do |chord|%> <tr> <td><%=chord.artist.artist%></td> <td><%= link_to chord.name, chord %></td> <td><%=chord.rating%></td> <td><%= chord.created_at %></td> </tr> <%end%> </table> The error message is : undefined method `artist' for nil:NilClass Actually, at first it worked, but when i started to create the "new.html.erb" page and the create,new controllers, it stopped working - thats why this is so confusing for me! • How important is it that models be consistent across project components?

  I have a project with two components, a server-side component and a client-side component. For various reasons, the client-side device doesn't carry a fully copy of the database around. How important is it that my models have a 1:1 correlation between the two sides? And, to extend the question to my bigger concern, are there any time-bombs I'm going to run into down the line if they don't? I'm not talking about having different information on each side, but rather the way the information is encapsulated will vary. (Obviously, storage mechanisms will also vary) The server side will store each user, each review, each 'item' with seperate tables, and create links between them to gather data as necessary. The client side shouldn't have a complete user database, however, so rather than link against the user for gathering things like 'name', I'd store that on the review. In other words... --- Server Side --- Item: +id //Store stuff about the item User: +id +Name -Password Review: +id +itemId +rating +text +userId --- Device Side --- Item: +id +AverageRating Review: +id +rating +text +userId +name User: +id +Name //Stuff The basic idea is that certain 'critical' information gets moved one level 'up'. A user gets the list of 'items' relevant to their query, with certain review-orientation moved up (i. e. average rating). If they want more info, they query the detail view for the item, and the actual reviews get queried and added to the dataset (and displayed). If they query the actual review, the review gets queried and they pick up some additional user info along the way (maybe; I'm not sure if the user would have any use for any of the additional user information). My basic concern is that I don't wan't to glut the user's bandwidth or local storage with a huge variety of information that they just don't need, even if proper database normalizations suggests that information REALLY should be stored at a 'lower' level. I've phrased this as a fairly low-level conceptual issue because that's the level I'm trying to think / worry over, but if it matters I'm creating a PHP / MySQL server that provides data for a iOS / CoreData client.

• Unwanted redirection after authentication

  Hello world! We have a form to submit ratings for a certain restaurant in a in our views/restaurants/show.html.erb. We only want logged in users to create new ratings. We put before_filter :login_required, :only = [ :new, :create ] (but we also tried only ":create") on top of our RatingsController. If we click the submit button after typing in the rating details we are prompted to log in (which is what we want). After filling in username and password and submitting the login form we get redirected back to e. g. /restaurants/36/ratings, but we want to be redirected back to where we came from - e. g. /restaurants/36/. We tried redirect_to(:back), but this redirects us back to the login form. Also the new rating does not get saved to the database. Any idea how we can change the redirection and how to make sure the rating gets saved? Thanks!

• Vertex 2 SSD is running faster than my Vertex 3 SSD?

  I used Acronis Disk Director to do a direct clone of my C:\ windows 7 x64 drive from my Vertex 2 to my new Vertex 3 SSD (Just to show the drive software winstall everything is identical.) I ran a performance test on Windows using the Windows Experience Index. The rating I am receiving when booting on the Vertex 2 is 7.5 While I am getting only a rating for the Vertex 3 of 6.9 My understanding is that the read/write speeds of the Vertex 2 is only up to 250MB/sec while the Vertex 3 is up to 500MB/sec. Copying a single file (3GB in size) from the Vertex 3 to itself was getting speed of approx 70-80MB/sec This speed is no better (maybe worse) than what I got from the Vertex 2 I am connected via the SATA 3 port on the motherboard, using an SATA 3 cable Is this issue caused by the drive cloning? Do I have a bad SSD?

  Winamp gives the option to rate songs. This is not a new feature. Everytime I would reinstall Windows and reinstall Winamp my ratings would all go away as expected, and I would have to re-rate everything. However, this time when I reinstalled Winamp, after using it for a few days, songs would appear in my top rated list as being rated. Some of these I remember rating a long time ago before I reinstalled Windows, and some of these I don't remember ever rating. Where are these ratings coming from?

• How to evaluate a user against optimal performance?

  I have trouble coming up with a system of assigning a rating to player's performance. Well, technically there is is a trivial rating system, but I don't like it because it would mean assigning negative scores, which I think most players will be discouraged by. The problem is that I only know the ideal number of actions to get the desired result. The worst case is infinite number of actions, so there is no obvious scale. The trivial way I referred to above is to take score = (#optimal-moves - #players-moves), with ideal score being zero. However, psychologically people like big numbers. No one wants to win by getting a mark of 0. I wonder if there is a system that someone else has come up with before to solve this problem? Essentially I wish to score the players based on: How close they've come to the ideal solution. Different challenges will have different optimal number of actions, so the scoring system needs to take that into account, e.g. Challenge 1 - max 10 points, Challenge 2 - max 20 points. I don't mind giving the players negative scores if they've performed exceptionally badly, I just don't want all scores to be <=0

Basically even though the content of an array in PhP can be Japanese. Is this true? What's wrong. • Propel Single Table Inheritance Issue

  I have a table called "talk", which is defined as abstract in my schema.xml file. It generates 4 objects (1 per classkey): Comment, Rating, Review, Checkin It also generates TalkPeer, but I couldn't get it to generate the other 4 peers (CommentPeer, RatingPeer, ReviewPeer, CheckinPeer), so I created them by hand, and made them inherit from TalkPeer.php, which inherits from BaseTalkPeer. I then implemented getOMClass() in each of those peers. The problem is that when I do queries using the 4 peers, they return all 4 types of objects. That is, ReviewPeer will return Visits, Ratings, Comments, AND Reviews. Example: $c = new Criteria(); $c->add(RatingPeer::VALUE, 5, Criteria::GREATER_THAN); $positive_ratings = RatingPeer::doSelect($c); This returns all comments, ratings, reviews, & checkins that have a value 5. ReviewPeer should only return Review objects, and can't figure out how to do this. Do I actually have to go through and change all my criteria to manually specify the classkey? That seems a little pointless, since the Peer name already distinct. I don't want to have to customize each Peer. I should be able to customize JUST the TalkPeer, since they all inherit from it... I just can't figure out how. I tried changing doSelectStmt just in TalkPeer so that it automatically adds the CLASSKEY restriction to the Criteria. It almost works, but I get a: Fatal error: Cannot instantiate abstract class Talk in /models/om/BaseTalkPeer.php on line 503. Line 503 is in BaseTalkPeer::populateObjects(), and is the 3rd line below: $cls = TalkPeer::getOMClass($row, 0); $cls = substr('.'.$cls, strrpos('.'.$cls, '.') + 1); $obj = new $cls(); The docs talked about overriding BaseTalkPeer::populateObject(). I have a feeling that's my problem, but even after reading the source code, I still couldn't figure out how to get it to work. Tables consist of: Table Movies ID Name Year Rating Runtime Table Con_MoviesToGenres MovieID GenreID Table Con_MovieToUser MovieID UserID Grade I'm trying to build a SELECT query to return 5 most recommended movies for a specific movie. Bearing in mind, I want to integrate in some way, similar genres, highest grades & movie Rating (so you want be recommended an R rated movie for a PG rated movie, unless it's really recommended in every other aspect). Also, if movie matches more than one genre, it will increase its recommendation ratio. Bonus: If a user gives a low grade to a movie - it will lose recommendation ratio.

  Hi folks, For my trading program, a Merchant object has a qualities HashMap of enumerated Qualities with Boolean values. public class Merchants { private Map<Qualities, Boolean> qualities = new HashMap<Qualities, Boolean>(); I would like to give each Merchant object a further ratedQualities HashMap of True Qualities with Byte or Integer values representing the Rating of those Qualities. For example, a given Merchant could have a "1" Rating associated with their True Stockbroking Quality. The problem is Java does not let me do this easily. The following code demonstrates my intentions but doesn't compile: private Map<qualities-TRUE, Byte> ratedQualities = new HashMap<qualities-TRUE, Byte>(); According to this link text one solution is to create a Wrapper for the qualities HashMap. I've implemented a form in the likes of - <%= radio_button_tag :sort, "rating" %> <%= label_tag :sort_rating, "order by rating" %> <%= radio_button_tag :sort, "name" %> <%= label_tag :sort_name, "order by name" %> And now I am unsure how to implement the sort at the controller/model level. The aspects I am puzzled about are: Where should the sort be performed How could the sort parameter be persisted How could the code be reused Right now, I can't even get the selected sort method to remain selected after a submit. I would most appreciate any guidance or reference to an example.

I feel like this is easily achievable using a group by clause and maybe a having. I was thinking: select distinct(cupcake) from cupcake_rating group by cupcake having delicious_rating in ('Super Delicious', 'Mouth Heaven') I know I can't have two separate AND statements. I was able to achieve my goal using: select distinct(cupcake) from cupcake_rating where cupcake in ( select cupcake from cupcake_rating where delicious_rating = 'Super Delicious' ) and cupcake in ( select cupcake from cupcake_rating where delicious_rating = 'Mouth Heaven' ) This will not be satisfactory because once I add a third type of rating I am looking for, the query will take hours (there are a lot of cupcake ratings).
