• Is there a supplementary guide/answer key for ruby koans?

  I have recently tried sharpening my rails skills with this tool: http://github.com/edgecase/ruby_koans but I am having trouble passing some tests. Also I am not sure if I'm doing some things correctly since the objective is just to pass the test, there are a lot of ways in passing it and I may be doing something that isn't up to standards. Is there a way to confirm if I'm doing things right? a specific example: in about_nil, def test_nil_is_an_object assert_equal __, nil.is_a?(Object), "Unlike NULL in other languages" end so is it telling me to check if that second clause is equal to an object(so i can say nil is an object) or just put assert_equal true, nil.is_a?(Object) because the statement is true? and the next test: def test_you_dont_get_null_pointer_errors_when_calling_methods_on_nil # What happens when you call a method that doesn't exist. • Paperclip: Stay put on edit

  When a user edits something in my application, they're forced to re-upload their image via paperclip even if they aren't changing it. Failing to do so will cause an error, since I validate_presence_of :image. This is quite annoying. How can I make it so Paperclip won't update its attributes if a user simply doesn't supply a new image on an edit? The photo controller is fresh out of Rails' scaffold generator. On the occasions that we do service the machines in the office we generally have one of our techs pick the computer up while they are out and about and bring it back with them. Only rarely will we require the customer to bring us the computer themselves. In order to reduce costs, be much more efficient, and potentially expand our market far beyond what would be feasible with travel required; I am looking at ways that we can service our clients remotely whenever possible. What we're in need of is a solid remote desktop application that will be incredibly easy for our customers to connect to, as well as be robust enough that we don't need the client babysitting the computer during the entire repair. Ideally I would like to use a web-based solution so that we don't have to walk the customers through installing, connecting, and configuring it over the phone. This would be unacceptable because of the level of service they are used to. Effectively we'd want them to be able to just go to a URL, enter a PIN or something, and then they are connected and ready to rumble. (Obviously the option to just email them a link that'd do all this for them would be what we'd be aiming for) Along with the ease of use factor, we would need the product to not require any further intervention on the part of the client after we have connected. Nobody is going to be happy if we have to call them every 15 minutes so they can reconnect to us every time we reboot - so auto-reconnect is an absolute must. The only product I know of right now that does any of this is LogMeIn Rescue. It allows unattended access, the applet is lightweight and installs quickly, and the customer can either enter a PIN on the site or just click a link emailed to them in order to connect. The only real downside I see to LogMeIn Rescue is that it's $120.00/month per technician. While we'd ultimately end up saving far more than that per month just in fuel costs alone, I'd like to explore any other options out there that I may not have come across. So - Are there any equally good products out there? If so what are they, why do you recommend them, how have you been utilizing them yourself, and what do they cost? • touch /forcefsck not working on Fedora16

  I need to run fsck in order to repair my one and only hard-disk. I have no rescue CD/USB available. I did the following: touch /forcefsck chmod a+rw /forcefsck # just to be really sure reboot But no fsck happened on reboot, though the /forcefsck file quietly disappeared (why BTW?)! I saw some responses on the Net suggesting a shutdown -rF to auto-run fsck on reboot, but the shutdown I have on my F16 does not have any -F option.

• Fedora 13 post security update boot problem

  Hello. About a month ago I installed a security update that had new Kernek 2.6.34.x from 2.6.33.x), this is when the problem occurred for the first time. After the install my computer would not boot at all, black screen without any visible hard drive activity (I gave it good 30 minutes on black screen, before took actions)... I poped in installation DVD and went in rescue mode to change back the boot option to old kernel (was just a guess where the problem was). After restart computer loaded just file, took a long time for it to start because of SELinux targeted policy relabel is required. Relabeling could take very long time depending on file size. I assumed that the update got messed up somehow and continued working with modified boot option. Couple of days ago, there was another kernel update. I installed it and same problem as before. This rules out corrupted update theory... Black screen right after 'BIOS' screen before OS gets loaded. I had to rescue system again... Below is copy of my grub.conf file. • Login to a Windows 7 Computer with disabled Administrator account.

  I just built a Windows 7 Image using sysprep and a custom answer file that's supposed to attach to our domain. However, it did not attach to the domain and so I have a computer that has been automatically setup via unattend.xml and is sitting at a login screen; with no active users (Administrator account says it is disabled). Is there a way I can activate the Administrator account and rescue this machine or do I have to rebuild it from scratch?

• Running resize2fs on /

  I'm trying to resize an ext4 filesystem on a Fedora 11 box. Using fsdisk and lvm, I was able to grow the partition and logical volume containing the filesystem. When I try to run resize2fs on the device containing the filesystem (/dev/sda2 in this case), I get: "Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda2, Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock" I've tried this from a rescue disk that doesn't have the filesystem mounted, no joy. Maybe resize2fs doesn't know about ext4?

  Hi, I just upgraded my (remote) webserver to Lenny from Etch. and no real issue occurs except that I cannot reboot that server. (I can only start in a rescue mode) I recall that a MBR change performed and I am wondering if that could be the reason for this failure. Would someone know how I can revert this MBR change ? • Possible to mount an ext4 partition image via FUSE?

  I'm attempting to mount an ext4 partition image in userspace. (no sudo, no special config/permissions modification to /dev/loop0 or /etc/fstab etc). So I'm hoping FUSE will come to the rescue. However it seems that each file system mounted through the FUSE system needs to have a special FUSE driver, and I've not been able to find a linux read-write ext4 FUSE driver for linux. Is there a way to mount ext4 images via FUSE (with write permission)?

Current state (fdisk -l): [writing from other computer so no copy and paste] /dev/sda1 305GB Linux /dev/sda2 7GB Extended /dev/sda5 7GB Linux Swam / Solaris To create a new, NTFS partition: fdisk /dev/sda n (for new) p (for primary) 3 (for partintion number) "No free sectors available" All the HDD was formatted couple of minutes before so there is a lot of free space but how to resize a parition? I cannot find an option for resizing in man fdisk. Some people say I should use gparted but my distro doesn't not contain this package. And my distro doesn't support wireless drivers so I have serious problems with downloading stuff. I tried also using cfdisk but any command results in: "cfdisk bad primary partition 1 partition ends in the final partial cylinder" I tried also removing partition 1 and then creating a new one (so there is no "no free sectors"). I'm receiving a warning: "Re-reading the partition table failed with error 16: Device or resource busy. The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot." After restating: "grub rescue, no known filesystem" It may indicate that some changes have been made BUT when running Windows 7 installed some another error: "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1" More detailed: "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS." So formatting drive using Windows 7 installer BUT this time yet another error: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information" Apparently I cannot access logs (how?) and I am back to drawing board with my live USB (this time showing partition as HPFS/NTFS). Any suggestions how to install Windows 7? Should I reinstall Linux to HDD, erase existing partitions once again, and use Parted rather than gparted (parted is included in the distro). Or maybe should I create another bootable USB such as PartedMagic to painlessly create partitions? I just want to install Windows 7 from USB, my laptop is semi-operational and I am ready to receive some help regarding fdisk and creating NTFS partitions. UPDATE: I did as suggested (removed all the partitions) and tried to install in unallocated space. Tried to create a new partition and format it. Same error: "setup was unable to create a new system partition" Came to the conclusion it may have something to do with TrueCrypt I have recently installed. Right now trying to FIX MBR (as I haven't got possibility to create rescue disc without optical drive)

• Grub doesn't find any partition, what can I do?

  So I just recently installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my desktop machine alongside Windows 7, it booted just fine the first few times but after I went into my Windows 7 recovery software provided by Packard Bell (I did this on accident BTW I exited it straight away and made no changes as far as I know) and re-booted I get this screen: error: no such partition grub rescue>_ PS: I have installed it on a USB stick using the ISO on the official Ubuntu website.

• Safely reboot prior to recovering data

  What is the safest (without additional writing to the disk) way to power down computer whose deleted files you want to recover in order to boot from rescue medium? In case of a desktop computer, plugging off the power cord looks like the most direct solution, but are there possible side-effects, apart from losing unsaved data? More problematic seems the laptop, with removing the battery being the equivalent, but is it a good idea overall?

However, since it was a git submodule it never checked out "master" and instead just checked out the head and placed all the files in the folder in "no branch". Now that I've made some changes by accident to these files I just realized that I was working in a "no branch", submodule of my project. How do I get those files into a branch (like master) so I can rescue them?

• Running resize2fs on /

  I'm trying to resize an ext4 filesystem on a Fedora 11 box. Using fsdisk and lvm, I was able to grow the partition and logical volume containing the filesystem. When I try to run resize2fs on the device containing the filesystem (/dev/sda2 in this case), I get: "Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda2, Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock" I've tried this from a rescue disk that doesn't have the filesystem mounted, no joy. Maybe resize2fs doesn't know about ext4?
