  • Why is my movie clip instance null?

    I have 2 movie clips in my scene, one is charlie brown running and another is lucy lifting a football. The movie clip instances are aptly named: lucyLifting and charlieRunning. When I get to frame 75, I run the following code: stop(); trace(lucyLifting); trace(charlieRunning); lucyLifing.stop(); charlieRunning.stop(); and I get the following output: [object MovieClip] null Why isn't it recognizing my second movie clip instance? This is very frustrating.... Thank you in advance.

  • Understanding Node.js and concept of non-blocking I/O

    Recently I became interested in using Node.js to tackle some of the parts of my web-application. I love the part that its full JavaScript and its very light weight so no use anymore to call an JavaScript-PHP call but a lighter JavaScript-JavaScript call. I however do not understand all the concepts explained. Basic concepts Now in the presentation for Node.js Ryan Dahl talks about non-blocking IO and why this is the way we need to create our programs. I can understand the theoretical concept. You just don't wait for a response, you go ahead and do other things. You make a callback for the response, and when the response arrives millions of clock-cycles later, you can fire that. If you have not already I recommend to watch this presentation. It is very easy to follow and pretty detailed. There are some nice concepts explained on how to write your code in a good manner. There are also some examples given and I am going to work with the basic example given. Examples The way we do thing now: puts("Enter your name: "); var name = gets(); puts("Name: " + name); Now the problem with this is that the code is halted at line 1. It blocks your code. The way we need to do things according to node puts("Enter your name: "); gets(function (name) { puts("Name: " + name); }); Now with this your program does not halt, because the input is a function within the output. So the programs continues to work without halting. Questions Now the basic question I have is how does this work in real-life situations. I am talking here for the use in web-applications. The application I am writing does I/O, bit is still does it in am blocking matter. I think that most of the time, if not all, you need to block, because you have to wait on what the response is you have to work with. When you need to get some information from the database, most of the time this data needs to be verified before you can further with the code. Example 1 If you take a login for example. You have to wait for the database to response to return, because you can not do anything else. I can't see a way around this without blocking. Example 2 Going back to the basic example. The use just request something from a database which does not need any verification. You still have to block because you don't have anything to do more. I can not come up with a single example where you want to do other things while you wait for the response to return. Possible answers I have read that this frees up recourses. When you program like this it takes less CPU or memory usage. So this non-blocking IO is ONLY meant to free up recourses and does not have any other practical use. Not that this is not a huge plus, freeing up recourses is always good. Yet I fail to see this as a good solution. because in both of the above examples, the program has to wait for the response of the user. Whether this is inside a function, or just inline, in my opinion there is a program that wait for input. Resources I looked at I have looked at some recourses before I posted this question. They talk a lot about the theoretical concept, which is quite clear. Yet i fail to see some real-life examples where this is makes a huge difference.   • Tips on creating user interfaces and optimizing the user experience

    I am currently working on a project where a lot of user interaction is going to take place. There is also a commercial side as people can buy certain items and services. In my opinion a good blend of user interface, speed and security is essential for these types of websites. It is fairly easy to use ajax and JavaScript nowadays to do almost everything, as there are a lot of libraries available such as jQuery and others. But this can have some performance and incompatibility issues. This can lead to users just going to the next website. The overall look of the website is important too. Where to place certain buttons, where to place certain types of articles such as faq and support. Where and how to display error messages so that the user sees them but are not bothering him. And an overall color scheme is important too. The basic question is: How to create an interface that triggers a user to buy/use your services I know psychology also plays a huge role in how users interact with your website. The color scheme for example is important. When the colors are irritating on a website you just want to click away. I have not found any articles that explain those concept. Does anyone have any tips and/or recourses where i can get some articles that guide you in making the correct choices for your website.

  • Request builder call not returning when using ssl(https)

    Hi , I am using GWT. Currently using gwt-rpc to for login authentication. For only login purpose i want to use ssl(https) and so instead of using gwt-rpc i am trying Request Builder and calling a servlet with https. When in Servlet URL i use protocol as http the request builder works perfectly and response returns to client side(onResponseReceived ). but when i use https in the servlet url then the servlet is gettting called but the response is not returning to the onResponseReceived method of request builder. my url with http looks like : http://localhost:8888/myproject/myservlet and with https it looks like :https://localhost/myproject/myservlet Please give any suggestion or is there any other way to do it.and also is it possible to use ssl over gwt-rpc.

    I want to know if it is possible to stream data from the server to the client with Node.js. From what I can understand all over the internet is that this has to be possible, yet I fail to find a correct example or solution. What I want is a single http post to node.js with AJAX. Than leave the connection open and continuously stream data to the client. The client will receive this stream and update the page continuously.

    I am new to the world of Rake and currently writing a Rake Script which consists of various tasks depending on the arguments passed to it on runtime. From some Tutorials over the web, I figured out how to pass parameters to the Script as well how to make a task which is dependent on other subtasks. For reference, I have mentioned a sample below: task :parent, [:parent_argument1, :parent_argument2, :parent_argument3] => [:child1, :child2] do # Perform Parent Task Functionalities end task :child1, [:child1_argument1, :child1_argument2] do |t, args| # Perform Child1 Task Functionalities end task :child2, [:child2_argument1, :child2_argument2] do |t, args| # Perform Child2 Task Functionalities end Following is what I want to achieve: I want to pass the arguments passed to the parent task to the child tasks.
