  • CSS Hidden DIV Form Submit

    Using CSS, when a link is clicked it brings up a hidden DIV that contains a form. The user will then enter information and then submit the form. I'd like the hidden DIV to remain visisble, and a 'success message' to be displayed after submission. Then the user will have the option of closing the DIV. I can't get it to work without reloading the page, which causes the DIV to become hidden again.     About three months ago we added an English version of our, previously Japanese only, site under the subfolder /en/ we've tried to follow the sometimes incomplete best practices laid out by Google by adding alternate tags to all pages that are currently translated. The top page for instance has the following meta tags for language. <link rel="canonical" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> While the English main page under /en/ has <link rel="canonical" href="/en/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> Alternate languages are setup in the sitemap. (as per Google's recommendations) It seems however that Google absolutely refuses to show the English top page in results when the user is using English at google.com if you search you'll, as of this post, get the Japanese description and a title that Google has apparently invented instead of the title and description in the meta-tags for the /en/ index page. Does anyone have any experience with subfolders actually working to affect search results? What are the best practices for ensuring that the correct language version of my website is displayed through Google and other search engines? And how long will it take before the new language version becomes prominent in search engine results?

  • Can I use nofollow for offsite links without it affecting my page rank?

    What I have is a page with almost all offsite links. Each clicked link is forwarded on to the destination. What I would like the search engines to do is to index the text between the anchor tag and not follow the link itself. <a href="somelink">Index This Text Only</a> I've read several articles and they all seem to contradict themselves as to when to use nofollow. What's been happening over the past 2 months that the site has been live is that both Google and Bing are crawling the site as well as all the links on the site that it has been forwarded to. The search engines are now generating a lot of 404s for images and files that never existed on my site but rather seems to correlate to the site it was forwarded to. The search engines don't seem to honor the 302 header when forwarded. I would like to get a definitive answer on the nofollow tag as it relates to my situation. Can I use nofollow to stop the 404s and if so, will it affect my page ranking negatively?

  • Form graphics not set when form loads

    My form has a group box which contains two overlapping rectangles. The form's other controls are two sets of four numeric up down controls to set the rectangles' colors. (nudF1,2,3 and 4 set the rectangle that's in front, and nudB1,2,3 and 4 set the rectangle that's behind.) Everything works fine, except that the rectangles do not display the colors set in the numeric up downs when the form first loads. The numeric up down controls' ChangeValue events all call the ShowColors() method. The form's Load event calls the csColorsForm_Load() method.     I'm doing a Sphinx search but turning up some really weird results. Any help is appreciated. So for example if I type "50", I get: 50 Cent 50 Lions 50 Foot Wave, etc. This is great, but when I search "50 Ce", I get: Ryczace Dwudziestki Spisek Bernhard Gal Cowabunga Go-Go And other crazy results. Also when I search for "50 Cent", the correct result is at the top, but then random results below. Any ideas why?   • How do you do a keyword search the Services.msc (mmc) window in Windows 7?

    When you want to run a service, you have very limited capabilities, in all current Windows versions, as far as I can tell. I usually start Services by typing "services.msc" into the Start-Run box, on most versions of Windows, this works. I know how to click the "Name" column in the MMC view of Windows Services. If you know what the first few characters of a service name is, you can usually sort by the name, and type the prefix to scroll the list down (find Windows Search for example). This seems pretty weak to me, so I spent some time searching the interwebs for tools that do a better job of managing services. Usually I have a keyword that I know "fooWare" might be the keyword, and I need to find the (usually badly named) service and start it and stop it. This is often WAY too hard. The best I could do is "NET SERVICES" from the command line, and maybe add a grep in there, but that doesn't list every service, only a few of them. And the MMC snap-in in Win7 now has an Export List button, exporting to csv text file feature which I have used from time to time, to export and then search. I have thought of writing my own tool. I'm hoping a better "service manager" utility exists out there that sysadmins use. I'd like a search box at the top right corner, kind of the same way that the Add-Remove-Programs dialog in Win7 and Vista has a search facility. Does such a services utility exist out there?

    My nutrition shop websites for tampa and brandon were coming up on page one of google search results and now they have dissappeared. The 2 websites serve different markets although they are close geographically and have the same products, keywords, and layouts. Brandon, FL is considered a suburb of Tampa, FL and could be grouped into the Tampa Bay area. There's also a mirror site nutrition shop setup for orlando. Is the google search ranking drop because: 1) from a flash banner recently added on the front page 2) is the site just being re-indexed on all search engines b/c of new content? 3) is it seen as duplicate content as there are separate websites for the cities of Tampa and Brandon but with the same content? What can be done to fix this? Thanks!

  • Meta description not displaying in custom site search results page

    We have Google Custom Site Search implemented on our company website. When I'm looking at the results page, I noticed that the Meta Description is not being displayed. It just seems to be reading the links titles from our drop down menu and using this as a description. When I search for the same page via google.com, the meta description is pulled in correctly. Any thoughts why this might be happening. I can't see anything in the Custom Site Search settings.

Its been glued together loosely over the last couple of years and now its my job to maintain it. I'm looking for a search engine that I can host myself that ideally: Allows for searching the Blog / Forum databases directly if given the database information and tables to search. Handles most text documents (PDF/DOC/ODF) Is open source, or allows access to the source code once purchased It doesn't matter to me what language or platform it is written in. Normally, I'd just use Google site search, but that's not an option for an intranet.

  • Unity dash search

    I have my personal folders to a different partition other than home, I had a series of symlinks in my home folder pointing to the folders on the other partition. This was causing multiple entries in Dash search do I modified my ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file pointing them to the folders on the second partition. The issue is that when I search for any one of these folders in Dash, I still get two entries, one pointing the folder and another that points to the /home/username/Documents folder. If I click on this link I get a Could not find /home/username/Documents error. Why is this and how do I delete these entries from Dash's records? If deleting records is not possible, is there a way to "reindex" the dash search database?
