• How must I deal with anti-virus software on Windows 7

  I know this question is looking like an easy question or not a question at all but it's not really easy question. I'm not related to security and anti-viruses and just don't trust every provided anti-virus. So first question is a real question - Is it OK (safe) to not use anti-virus at all. I know how to use firewall, usually I use only trusted connections and surfing trusted sites. My chances to get virus is really low. Even I've got a bit outdated PC and don't want to pay the performance for it. I can do monthly scans without having one installed - is it OK to be safe ? If not can you recommend a good free antivirus solution?

  Hi! I need help with my browsers. In my OS (windows 7 basic) installed 2 browsers: IE 8 and Google Chrome. When I trying to open pages, which associated with microsoft.com (like ms live and others), my browser crashes. IE 8 crashes too. But Opera (I've installed it later) works fine with that pages. P.S. I tried to search the trojan software and viruses. But my PC is clean.

  On a friends laptop following some viruses infestations there is a problem in starting the Windows firewall. The error is: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified When attempting to turn on automatic updates in the security centre, the message is: We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automtic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK. All the options under "Automatic Updates" are greyed out. I've tried the suggestions below and many others: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/892199 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm I can't do a repair install because the installer doesn't detect existing versions. It's XP pro service pack 3.

• "System call failed" error when trying to open "My Computer" etc. under the Start menu! What is happening?

  When I go to the start menu I can load program icons but if I click on Documents, My Pictures, My Computer, Default Programs...all the options on the right part--I get "System call failed". How do I solve ths? Is my HD failing? Also, I don't know if it's connected but yesterday my uTorrent stopped working in a way it has never done before. I'm not able to download torrent files. In the program I get "socket unreacheable..." Also, for the last 2 days my internet has been super-slow. I checked Kaspersky for viruses. It says: "No active threats". Windows 7 64-bit.

• How to move mail among Google Apps for Domains users

  Considering moving the domain used by my extended family for email to Google Apps. One less server for me to manage, better spam filtering, etc. One thing that's been nice about running my own has been the way I manage my kids' incoming email - it comes to me first, and I drop good mail in a symlinked IMAP folder that we share. A little procmail is all it takes, and straight-through exceptions are easy to implement. (FYI, no I'm not advocating censorship, but manually filtering spam and viruses from my 8-year-old's inbox seems like the right thing to do. YMMV) Anyway. I'm wondering if there's an easy way to do something similar in Google Apps - setting up filters to auto-redirect to me looks easy enough (any gotchas there?), but moving things back is not obvious. Yes, I could access both accounts via IMAP and drag mails across, but does anyone have an easier way?

  I am looking for a good windows 7 software to free up RAM memory on my PC... i tried some ones I found on google but they were bad stuff... with viruses, spamware etc... i want a free clean professional software, if you don't know a good one thats free, please recommend a payed version. Also other tips/software to speed up my pc(on win7- 64bit) and such utilities. Also software to measure temperature would be great... If you can make a "must have" list of such software... • Would there be any problems with DEP turned off?

  I recently moved to a fresh Windows 8 x64 system and I learned that my favourite firewall (JPF - Jetico Personal Firewall) doesn't get along with Win8x64 (CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION errors), but I can not do without JPF, so I kind of tried everything I could think of (test mode, debugging, various system changes), but I was still getting blue screens because of the firewall driver/software. I know for sure that it is the firewall that is causing the problems because I get blue screens as soon as I install it and they stop when I uninstall it. I Also tested it thoroughly on virtual computers. Anyway, I have discovered that by completely turning DEP off by using this command: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff the firewall would not cause blue screens anymore. So my question is, what could go wrong with DEP completely turned off? Note: I do not care much about hardware/windows security, I keep myself secured by using sandboxes and virtual computers (and I also have backups), so I'm not concerned with viruses and root kits or whatever people are freaking out about.

• What antivirus software supports updates without an internet connection?

  I'm putting antivirus software on Windows 7 computers in the middle of Africa. The computers don't have internet access, but still need to be protected against viruses from CDs and thumbdrives. Separate from these computers is one computer that does have extremely spotty internet access. What's the best AV software for this situation? The important part, as I see it, is that we need to keep the computers up to date, but can't let the AV software suck down updates at its leisure: the computers are disconnected, and getting emails onto the connected computer is a challenge enough. We thought we might transfer update files to the connected computer using a protocol that can handle repeated connection drops (e.g. FTP with resume.) Then we'd manually apply the update files to the disconnected computers. Does any AV software support this? Is there a better solution?

  I'm trying to create a Word document with links to resources on the web. If I create a hyperlink to a regular HTML file, when I click on the link, it opens in my default browser (Google Chrome) as expected. However, if I click on a link to a PDF file on a website, it opens in Internet Explorer. Before it opens, I also get the following prompt: Microsoft Office Opening http://www.example.com/example.pdf Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy source. Would you like to open this file? OK Cancel I'm using Office 2010, but I'm asking for a user who is using Office 2007 and is experiencing the same issue. (His default browser is Firefox.) We're both on Windows 7.

  When I move or delete files, they occasionally appear right back where they were a day later. Also, when I move files, they not only re-appear where I moved them from, they are also where I moved them to as well. Is my system duplicating files? It seems so. This problem has been occurring randomly, but with increasing regularity. Most of the issues are with downloaded music and image files, but it has happened occasionally with Word documents as well. Also, some of my desktop icons have reappeared after I have moved or deleted them. I have run extensive system scans for malware, viruses and the sort but nothing pops up. Is there something wrong with my settings or is there another problem? I use Windows 7, SP 1 with all current updates, and have a few other issues. I was worried that perhaps some of my settings were incorrect.

• How can I fix a computer that is infested with malware and is extremely unresponsive? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I get rid of malicious spyware, malware, viruses or rootkits from my PC? I'm troubleshooting a Windows 7 PC for a friend. A couple of days ago it started running 'slow'. It turns out 'slow' is about 15 minutes to the first glimpse of the desktop, and another 30 to show icons. It is possible to open Task Manager, and nothing seems awry, CPU usage at 1-5%, plenty of memory free. The machine is clearly infested with malware though, in particular a program called 'Optimizer Pro' is demanding money to 'remove 5102 files slowing down my computer'. This seems highly suspicious. My problem is though, that I can't access msconfig (I left it for a couple of hours after having hopefully typed it into the Start Menu and hit enter - nothing seems to have loaded), or anything at all basically. I can boot from a Linux Live CD, but can I actually do anything useful from there? System Restore hasn't fixed it either, and Safe Mode exhibits the same behavior.

• Clicking on a link in Chrome opens up Notepad

  I'm currently using Chrome 21.0.1180.89 on Windows 7, but I have noticed this behavior in other versions before. Probably about one time in a hundred, I will click on a link on a website and an instance of Notepad will open up with a blank page rather than the browser going to the link. To my knowledge, I have no malware or viruses on the machine that could be causing this. It's a minor annoyance, so I'm not very concerned about it, but I'm wondering if there could be a MIME type that's set wrong by default in the browser?

• PC won't boot, even into bios

  Here's the deal: I cleaned a hard drive of some viruses (externally) and put it back into the original pc. This hard drive will boot in any other pc except the original pc. When I try other hard drives in the original pc, they are able to boot. The drive has Windows XP. What is the problem? How can I get this hard drive to work properly? The original hard drive works in other PCs. The PC boots with other hard drives acting as the master.   So, my kid's computer has Windows XP, with no disks. I'm pretty sure it has some viruses on the computer, of the type that don't seem to come out despite trying multiple anti-viral programs on it. I'm ready to just format it and start over again. I have a license sticker on the box, but no media to install it. I strongly suspect the license is OEM, but I don't have any proof. What suggestions would you have? I should say, the computer originally belonged to a business, is probably 6 years old, and I am willing to pay a small charge if required. I don't want to change the OS installed either.

  Dear friends, Please tell me whether it is possible for someone on the external network to see the network folder shares of an internal LAN network in DHCP (192.168.x.x) through a Comp-A on an external network in DHCP (123.123.x.x) both networks are on different subnets but Comp-A has access to both networks and can see all the shared drives of both the internal and external networks using firewall is not an option because file sharing is required everywhere. care is taken from viruses/trojans... remote desktop etc is disabled on Comp-A Please let me know. • Windows XP - Website unaccessible on single pc in LAN

  For serveral days now, a website isn't accessible on a single pc in the LAN. On the other pc's, it works just fine. And it's just a single website that's not accessible as far as I know of. The website generates a timeout on every single web browser I've tried (IE8, Firefox and Chrome). However, traceroute, nmap and telnet all work just fine. I've even tried multiple user accounts and safe mode, but that didn't work either. As a side note: using a linux live cd did work and I could access the website without any problems. The hosts file is the windows default, the ip- and dns settings on the network adapter normal as well. No strange processes are running and no viruses found. According to tcpview and netstat there are connections to the domain, but every request in the browser results in a timeout.. Any idea what's happening?

  I use multiple browser many times when I am working with multiple projects simultaneously. Often I use Google Reader to read few feeds. Recently, I faced the following error and this error will not go. I even restarted my computer and rebooted my network. I am confident that my computer does not have viruses or malware, I could not tackle this error. When I opened Google Reader on another browser, it worked fine. Finally, I found the solution and I want share it with all of you. Error We’re sorry… … but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can’t process your request right now. I removed the cookies of Google Reader with the name ‘reader_offline’ as displayed in image below. Once I remove the above mentioned cookie, I could login perfectly fine in Google Reader. I think this message from Google was misleading and inaccurate; however, the solution is easy enough. I just wanted to share this quick tip with everyone who is facing such an issue. • My software is hosted on a "bad" website. Can I do anything about it?

  The software I've created is hosted on what you could call a "bad" website. It's hard to explain, so I'll just provide an example. I've made a free password generator. This, along with most of my other FREE software, is available on this website. This is their description of my software: Platform: 7/7 x64/Windows 2K/XP/2003/Vista Size: 61.6 Mb License: Trial File Type: .7z Last Updated: June 4th, 2011, 15:38 UTC Avarage Download Speed: 6226 Kb/s Last Week Downloads: 476 Toatal Downloads: 24908 Not only is the size completely skewed, it is not trial software, it's free software. The thing is that it's not the description I'm worried about--it's the download links. The website is a scam website. They apparently link to "cracks" and "keygens", but not only is that in itself illegal, they actually link to fake download websites that give you viruses and charge your credit card. Just to list things that are wrong with this website: they claim all software is paid software then offer downloads for keygens and cracks; they fake all details about the program and any program reviews and ratings; they and the downloads site they link to are probably run by the same person, so they make money off of these lies. I'm only a teenager with no means to pursue legal action. This means that, unfortunately, I can't do anything that will actually get results. I'd like my software to only be downloaded off my personal website. I have links to four legitimate locations to download my software and that's it. Essentially, is there anything I can do about this? As I said above, I can't pursue legal action, but is there some way I can discourage traffic to that website by blacklisting it or something? Can I make a claim on MY website to only download my software from the links I provide? Or should I just pay no mind? Because, honestly, it's a bit of a ways back in Google results. • How to diagnose and fix Kernel Panic Fatal Machine Check error?

  I have got a new Samsung Series 7 laptop with dual boot setup for Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10. A fine machine comparable to a Macbook Pro. The Ubuntu installation was quite a hassle, but with the help of Boot Repair finally it seemed to work. Or so I thought. Windows 8 starts fine, but if I want to start Ubuntu regularly the following Machine Check Exception error occurs, quite similar to this one [Hardware Error] CPU 1: Machine Check Exception: 5 Bank 6 [Hardware Error] RIP !inexact! 33 <00007fab2074598a> [Hardware Error] TSC 95b623464c ADDR fe400 MISC 3880000086 .. [similar messages for CPU 2,3 and 0] .. [Hardware Error] Machine Check: Processor context corrupt Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal Machine Check Rebooting in 30 seconds Kernel panic does not sound good. Then it starts to reboot, and the second boot trial often works. Is it a Kernel or driver problem? The laptop has an Intel Core i7 processor. I already deactivated Hyperthreading in the BIOS, but it does not seem to help :-( I also disabled the Execute Disable Bit (EDB) flag in the BIOS. EDB is an Intel hardware-based security feature that can help reduce system exposure to viruses and malicious code. Since I disabled it, the error did occur less frequently, but it still appears occasionally :-( It seems to be the same error as described here and here. Maybe a Samsung specific Kernel problem? A similar error also happens on a Samsung Ultrabook Series 9 (which seems to be kernel bugs 49161 and 47121). At my Samsung Series 7, it still occurs for instance during booting on battery after "Checking battery state". Perhaps anyone else has an idea? These Kernel Panic errors are reallly annoying..
