  • Display Problems running Ubuntu 12.04 in Windows VMware Player

    I am posting this again because I have changed to VMWare Player and I discovered something new. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Guest) in VMWare Player 6.0.2 on Windows 7 64-bit Host. I have VMWare Tools installed properly. I am running MATE but the problem persists when I change (to and from) xfce, gnome, mate a-- and back again I had been using this for a couple of years without any graphics issues. After an Ubuntu update (typical) -- my video is corrupt and will not refresh correctly. My desktop icons are "mirrored" and when I open a terminal window (for instance) -- sometimes -- the window appears multiple times. Of course, only one is the real image. It seems to be a refresh problem. When I move an active window around the screen the "older" images "erase" and my icons (for instance) are in the correct location. For instance, I can move the terminal around a pretty corrupted window and the screen behind it is repainted correctly. NEW: Next, I got the idea to try and Remote Desktop in to the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Guest OS from my Windows 7 64-bit Host. Once working, and connected via Win RDC -- using MATE as default in my /etc/xrdp/startws.sh -- my video is not corrupted and works fine (as in the past). Any ideas about what is going on ? or how to fix this ?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on install using VMware Player on Windows 7

    At my job, we're migrating to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.10 (we skipped a generation), so everyone needs to make one or more new Virtual Machines for 12.04 on their Windows 7 workstation. The problem is, only some have had success while most encounter a hang during install. I was tasked with researching this problem and here are my findings (while somewhat inconclusive) I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Player, using versions 4.0.2, 4.0.4, and 5.0.0 but every install hangs at "retrieving file 55 of 129." Additionally I have installed before updating the VMware tools, as well as after (one can pre-download them) with every install hanging at "retrieving file 55 of 129." The file i was using for the above two is called: ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso I have burned a disc with ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso and tried to install it, and later tried ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso (which is not what i want but i wanted to see if it would work), but both times I get "PXE-E53: No boot filename recieved PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found" This is all in VMware and the goal is to find a settings recipe that will allow an unbroken 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 install from an .iso hosted on the Windows OS.   • VMware Converter errors when creating Boot Camp VM

    I just got a new computer. My old computer had a Boot Camp installation of Windows 7, with VMWare running the Boot Camp installation in a virtual machine. On my new computer, I want Windows to strictly be a VM, so I downloaded the VMWare Converter software to create a virtual machine out of the Boot Camp partition. After finishing 95% of the converting process, I get a few messages Warning: Failed while updating boot.ini on the target machine's system volume. Warning: Failed while updating drive letters for the target volume layout. Error: Reconfiguration failed. And then it fails with FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible. I'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it...I don't know much about virtualization or dual booting other than the simple instructions on how to set it up the first time.

    Summary of different problems while using VMware products on Ubuntu. This article is going to be updated from time to time with new information about running VMware products more or less smoothly on Ubuntu. Following are links to existing articles: Running VMware Player on Linux (xubuntu Hardy Heron) Running VMware Server on Linux (version 1.0.6 on xubuntu) Using ext4 in VMware machine   VMware mouse grab/ungrab problem (Source: LinuxInsight) Upgrading GTK library in Ubuntu since Karmic Koala gives you a strange mouse behaviour. Even if you have "Grab when cursor enters window" option set, VMware won't grab your pointer when you move mouse into the VMware window. Also, if you use Ctrl-G to capture the pointer, VMware window will release it as soon as you move mouse around a little bit. Quite annoying behavior... Fortunately, there's a simple workaround that can fix things until VMware resolves incompatibilities with the new GTK library. VMware Workstation ships with many standard libraries including libgtk, so the only thing you need to do is to force it to use it's own versions. The simplest way to do that is to add the following line to the end of the /etc/vmware/bootstrap configuration file and restart the Workstation. export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" The interface will look slightly odd, because older version of GTK is being used, but at least it will work properly. Note: After upgrading a new Linux kernel, it is necessary to compile the VMware modules, this requires to temporarily comment the export line in /etc/vmware/bootstrap.

    After patching some kernel modules, I got VMware Workstation 6.5.4 running on my Ubuntu 10.4 x86_64 machine. However, now my Windows XP SP3 guest instance cannot keep mouse input captured for any length of time. I can sometimes activate a control in the guest if a double click very quickly, but it's not reliable (and extremely annoying). Everything appears to be fine in Unity; the problem just appears when I'm running the instance in the VMware window.

    Is it possible to limit how much CPU a virtual machine can use with VMWare Player? I use VMWare to run a Windows XP virtual machine. I want to keep it on in the background all the time. The real computer runs Windows 7 and is sometimes a little bit short of memory. That's why I want to check if I can throttle the VM down to the bare minimum to keep it running in the background constantly without interfering too much.

    In an effort to increase speed in my Vmware setup, I was thinking about converting a Windows XP Guest 32 bit I have from growable to pre-allocated, I'm currently running VMWare Workstation 7 with Windows 7 64 bit as the host. Specs: Dual Core CPU, one allocated to guest 4GB of RAM, 2GB to guest HD max capacity is 500GB, 150GB allocated to guest (I have 300GB left and don't mind parting with the space, currently HD is 80GB and converting would obviously add another 70GB of space), HD that guest is running on is separate from Host OS Either that or any other suggestions you have might be appreciated, thanks!

    I'm trying to find out whether VMware ESX 4.x Fault Tolerance (FT) is supported on a particular server and VMware's HCL is confusing me. It says that some servers with FT-supported processors (specifically the Xeon 3400 Lynnfield) do not support FT and some with almost identical specs (same chipset for instance) do support FT. Could this be a mistake on the HCL itself? To my understanding FT support is based only on the CPU. Thanks. RC

    Recently, I am working on an issue with threshold. The problem is that when the user navigates to a view of the document library, it displays the error message “list view threshold is exceeded”. However, in the view, it has no data. The list view threshold limit is 5000 by default for the non-admin user. This limit is not the number of items returned by your query; it is the total number of items the database needs to read to calculate the returned result set. So although the view does not return any result but to calculate the result (no data to show), it needs to access more than 5000 items in the database. To fix the issue, you need to create an index for the column that you use in the filter for the view. Let’s look at the problem in details. You can download a solution to replicate this issue here. 1. Go to Central Admin ==> Web Application Management ==>General Settings==> Click on Resource Throttling 2. Change the list view threshold in web application from 5000 to 2000 so that I can show the problem without loading more than 5000 items into the list. FROM TO 3. Go to the page that displays the approved view of the Loan application document set. It displays the message as shown below although I do not have any data returned for this view. 4. To get around this, you need to create an index column. Go to list settings and click on the Index columns. 5. Click on the “Create a new index” link. 6. Select the LoanStatus field as I use this filed as the filter to create the view. 7. After the index is created now I can access the approved view, as you can see it does not return any data.     What is the best way to share a folder between Win7 64bit (host) and Ubuntu 10.10 (guest) in VMware player? I can setup the sharing just fine (using vmware-tools), but all shared files are root:root owned with 777 permission set. Which, well, sucks. What can I do to have shared files with preserved ownership and permissions? I'm guessing I would need some kind of a file container, that would get mounted in Ubuntu as a block device (if so, it would need to be dynamic, i.e. expand with size of contained files). But maybe there is a better solution?

    In the past I had no problems installing Ubuntu 12.04 inside VMWare Player 4.0.4 on my Windows 7 Pro machine. Now I installed Ubuntu 13.10 and have a couple of problems: the default screensize (even during the installation) is gigantic I've told Ubuntu to automatically login - after reboot the gigantic screen occurs without showing anything, without doing anything on mouse clicks, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work switching to console using Ctrl+Alt+F1...F6 works, but is incredible slow invoking 'sudo reboot now' does not succeed, it prints Killing all remining processes... [fail] Restoring resolver state... [ OK ] Will now switch to single-user mode root@ubuntu1310:~# invoking now 'shutdown now' will soon show the same error. What I need to do to get Ubuntu 13.10 up and running in VMWare Player?

  • How to find the IP Address of a vm running on VMware (or other methods of using VM)

    I am running VMware Workstation on a Linux box. When I power on a centOS (Linux) virtual machine I cannot get mouse or keyboard control of the machine. I suspect that it has something to do with the error message: You do not have VMware Tools installed in this guest. Chose "Install VMware Tools" from the VM menu. If I click on that menu option it inserts a virtual cd with drivers etc. This does not help me since I don't have keyboard or mouse control over the machine. I was thinking that if I could figure out the IP address or hostname I could use any number of protocols to get into the machine (SSH comes to mind). How can I get the IP address or hostname of this machine? Note: I did not create this machine. A coworker created it who is no longer with the company. Would save me a lot of time if I could get into the machine. I have login credentials so that won't be a problem.

    I'm running VMWare Worstation 7 with Windows 7 x64 as guest, Windows XP x64 as host. Inside the guest I run a long-running console application, which prints out progress messages with timestamps on them. Sometimes I leave it running for several hours while I lock the host OS and don't touch the computer at all. When I come back I find that some time after I left it seems to have paused and automatically resumed: the console app hasn't made much progress and there's a large time gap in its progress messages. There's nothing relevant in the host event log, but in the guest Application event log I can see these messages around the time I left: A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (VMware Tools Service) The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application And later, around the time I returned, this shows up in the System log: The system time has changed to ?2012?-?01?-?12T06:36:46.921000000Z from ?2012?-?01?-?12T03:18:19.953079000Z. That seems to support my theory that it's VMware doing something and not Windows itself. The question is: how do I stop it doing that? I want my application to continue running. By the way, the power options are set to never sleep in both guest and host.

On Sat. 06/07/2014, Ubuntu performed an automatic system update as it does regularly, however after reboot, the display driver seems to be broken which causes the screen to split into many identical panels.   • How to make screenshots using VMWare tool "vmrun"?

    Hi everybody! I'm currently working with the vmrun-Tool, to control VMWare Virtual Machines. I'm using VMWareWorkstation 7.0.0/7.0.1 and VMWarePlayer 3.0.0 on Windows 7 x64. I simply want to take a screenshot of each virtual machine which is powered on. Listing the power-on virtual machines is quite simply and works! (vmrun list) But the captureScreen command doesn't work. I have tryed serveral commandline options. for example: vmrun -T ws captureScreen %VMPATH% %OUTPUTPATH% I get no error message, but the console is blocked (and the command never finishes). I have also tryed to include -gu USERNAME and -gp PASSWORD, but it result in the same problem. Sorry for my English and thanks for your help in advance!!!

  • How can I install/uninstall VMware Workstation silently in Linux?

    I want to install VMware Workstation in Windows and Linux host silently. In Windows host, I can use the silent installation features of the Microsoft Windows Installer. But I didn't find a way to perform silent install/uninstall in Linux host. I had to click "I agree" or "Close" to make the installation continue or complete. If there has a Workstation installed, I can use vmware-installer -i path to installation file" --console --required to update the Workstation to a different version. But this command only exists after a Workstation has been installed.

  • Will SSD degrade when running VMWare Workstation from SSD?

    My main OS (Windows 7 or 8) is runned from SSD. I'd want to run Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 using VMWare workstation. I've heard that VMWare doesn't support TRIM and other things to optimize SSD usage. So SSD will quickly degrade if VM will be runned from SSD. Will it be better to put guest OS's files (.vmdk and the rest) to external HDD (connected through USB 2 or 3) instead of SSD? What advantages and disadvantages it will give? What if VM will be put to internal HDD? At what drive type performance of VM will be better?

  • Unable to start VMWare Workstation after upgrade to 13.04

    After upgrading to 13.04 I am unable to start VMWorkstation. I get the following message: Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. Kernel Headers 3.8.0-19-generic Kernel headers for version 3.8.0-19-generic were not found. If you have installed them in a non-default path you can specify the path below. Does anyone have any idea what to do next? Ubuntu 13.04 64bit If I direct the path to: /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-19-generic I get the following message: C header files matching your running kernel were not found. Thanks Additional: As suggested I run this in terminal: cd /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build/include/linux sudo ln -s ../generated/utsrelease.h sudo ln -s ../generated/autoconf.h sudo ln -s ../generated/uapi/linux/version.h However, now I get the following: Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the kernel CANCEL / INSTALL I INSTALL, the window closes and nothing happens.... Any ideas? ADDITIONAL: I installed this: sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-dev open-vm-dkms open-vm-toolbox open-vm-tools-dev And it all launched... Note: Also found this which may help others too: HERE ADDITIONAL ERROR: Could not open /dev/vmmon: Is a directory. Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.
