  • using wireless with VMWare workstation 6.5

    I am using VMWare workstation 6.5 and have installed WinXP SP2 on it. My main operation system is Win 7. when I am hard-wired, I can use internet inside vmware but when I am wireless, I cannot use internet inside vmware... I did a research and found that the network adapter should be on NAT instead of bridge, I tried that but it did not work either.

  • Windows 8.1 in a VMWare Workstation 10 guest's mouse is missing, but only sometimes

    I have VMWare Workstation 10 running on a Windows 7 machine, hosting a k guest OS. Before upgrading to WS 10 I was using version 9, and the Win8 guest OS ran without difficulty or error conditions. Since upgrading and installing the most current VMWare Tools inside the guest after upgrading to version 10, there are circumstances where the mouse pointer is not visible; the mouse position appears stuck at a screen location which is not the center of the virtualized display; and mouse click and scrolling events still get processed. Once this begins happening I have to reboot the host machine to get it to stop. (VMWare Tools 9.6.1 build-1378637 is what the WS 10 software installed) The problem seems to correlate with whether the mouse is captured during Win 8.1's bootup process, before control is passed to the login screen. If I explicitly click the mouse into the guest OS and move it slowly around while the system is booting, then I see the mouse after clicking to lift the first screen and expose the password prompt, and there is never a problem within the guest. If I don't do this during bootup, there is no mouse pointer, with the symptoms listed above. I have tried removing and reinstalling VMWare tools, and the other steps published for "mouse problems" from VMWare's chaotic troubleshooting database. The problem persists. Is there a setting in the virtual machine's configuration which could prevent this behavior?

  • VMWare Workstation 8 reporting ""vmx86 driver version invalid handle" problem on booting VM

    I'm just doing a VMWare Workstation 8 installation. However, on trying to boot (or create) a VM, it's reporting "Could not get vmx86 driver version: The handle is invalid." It recommends reinstalling, which I've done. Also, VMWare Player just hangs. Was going to post on the VMWare forums, but can't seem to create a new discussion (even though I've registered/logged in). It's our own fault for being too eager to upgrade, I guess.

  • Radeon HD 6850 VMware 3D Support?

    I'm a new Ubuntu user (new to all of linux actually). I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and have been enjoying it, but I wanted to see how it would perform using VMware for small time gaming since I find dual booting too much of a nuisance to even bother using Ubuntu at all (sorry!). I have an Asus EAH6850 DirectCU Radeon HD 6850 graphics card and I've installed the additional ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver, but when I open a Windows XP 32bit machine I installed through VMware, I get this message: "The GPU driver currently installed on this host may cause issues with VMware products. If you notice any issues please disable the 3D support in the affected virtual machines." I still have 3D capabilities in the VM but they are very very choppy even running the DX tests (the spinning cube). I've seen people on youtube and other forums saying that since the new 3D acceleration in VMware 8 gaming is very possible through VMs (and I've seen them running the DX tests with the spinning cube very smoothly). I'm wondering if my graphics card isn't fully supported or if I have installed it wrong. Also when I check system info (on the host Ubuntu machine) it says "Graphics VESA:BARTS" Should my Radeon HD 6850 be showing up there? The rest of my basic system info i5 2500k 8GB 1600MHz memory Guest is running with access to all 4 cores of processor and 3gb memory assigned.

  • How to find the IP Address of a vm running on VMware (or other methods of using VM)

    I am running VMware Workstation on a Linux box. When I power on a centOS (Linux) virtual machine I cannot get mouse or keyboard control of the machine. I suspect that it has something to do with the error message: You do not have VMware Tools installed in this guest. Chose "Install VMware Tools" from the VM menu. If I click on that menu option it inserts a virtual cd with drivers etc. This does not help me since I don't have keyboard or mouse control over the machine. I was thinking that if I could figure out the IP address or hostname I could use any number of protocols to get into the machine (SSH comes to mind). How can I get the IP address or hostname of this machine? Note: I did not create this machine. A coworker created it who is no longer with the company. Would save me a lot of time if I could get into the machine. I have login credentials so that won't be a problem.

  • VMware guest pauses when the host is idle - how do I keep it running?

    I'm running VMWare Worstation 7 with Windows 7 x64 as guest, Windows XP x64 as host. Inside the guest I run a long-running console application, which prints out progress messages with timestamps on them. Sometimes I leave it running for several hours while I lock the host OS and don't touch the computer at all. When I come back I find that some time after I left it seems to have paused and automatically resumed: the console app hasn't made much progress and there's a large time gap in its progress messages. There's nothing relevant in the host event log, but in the guest Application event log I can see these messages around the time I left: A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (VMware Tools Service) The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application And later, around the time I returned, this shows up in the System log: The system time has changed to ?2012?-?01?-?12T06:36:46.921000000Z from ?2012?-?01?-?12T03:18:19.953079000Z. That seems to support my theory that it's VMware doing something and not Windows itself. The question is: how do I stop it doing that? I want my application to continue running. By the way, the power options are set to never sleep in both guest and host.

    I successfully encrypted a VM image and confirmed it still runs. I then closed the VM and reopened it and confirmed the encryption password was valid and worked. However, now I want to un-encrypt the VM. When I choose that option, it asks for "your password". I assume this means the password I created when I encrypted it. It doesn't work. I can still open the VM with the password and run it. But, it refuses to remove the encryption using that password. Am I missing something? Is there a password that I don't know about? Some details: I created this image (using standalone converter; physical machine source) I converted it to ACE Converted back to a normal VM (un-ACE'd it) Encrypted it Cannot remove the encryption but can open it and run it As you can see... I am exploring the VMware features. Thanks for any guidance you can give.

    Kernel Module Update was required when opening VMWare client (vmplayer) then following error occurs. Any idea would be appreciated. Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-NNN.log for details (Note: NNN looks like random numbers) On GUI that show progress of updating, "Virtual Netowork Device" show red flag appears.   • Sharing internet to Ubuntu 12.04 VMWare guest

    Got the 12.04 distro and installed this on my Mac VMWare Fusion (Version 4.1.2). Install went fine and Ubuntu seemed to update itself during the install. Rebooted and now I cannot get Ubuntu to access the internet via my Macs Ethernet connection (Connected to a router) Have tried settings the VMWare network adaptor to NAT or bridged and Host only without success. In Ubuntu I have the eth0 set to Automatic DHCP. VMWare tools is installed as well. I know next to nothing about what to do here and net searches on both Stackoverflow and Superuser sites are producing not results for me. Could someone please help? What to eventually have Ubuntu run in the background as a development web server running Zend Framework and CE Server edition but need thew internet access to run updates etc on Ubuntu. Any help would be really appreciated. TIA John

However after install I don't get the new gnome shell, in the terminal gnome-shell --version tells me that I'm using the latest version, 3.4.1.   • Building new GIS Workstation - is it worth upgrading to a workstation GPU?

    We are currently building a machine from scratch to act as a GIS workstation. The primary software used is ESRI's ArcGIS and we are mainly working with vector data using raster data only for contextual background imagery. In the past I have built a GIS machine and used a consumer grade gaming GPU (Nvidia 9800GT) and found it to perform fine. However, I have always wondered if I would have been better off equipping it with a workstation GPU such as a Quadro series. Would a workstation GPU make a noticeable difference doing 2D GIS operations or should I save money on the build and equip it with another 9800GT?

  • Multiple workstation setups using virtualization - best solution

    I'm looking to set up a server for my small startup. I have a few employees and would like to use my computer at home to provide them all with workstations. Each workstation should have the same collection of software installed but each user's workstation should be completely separate from the others. I need each user to be able to remotely log in to their workstation (using TeamViewer or something like it) and I want to be able to monitor their workflow from my screen. I suppose I need a virtualization solution. Can anybody recommend one with easy set up, I'm not a server administrator.

  • How to make screenshots using VMWare tool "vmrun"?

    Hi everybody! I'm currently working with the vmrun-Tool, to control VMWare Virtual Machines. I'm using VMWareWorkstation 7.0.0/7.0.1 and VMWarePlayer 3.0.0 on Windows 7 x64. I simply want to take a screenshot of each virtual machine which is powered on. Listing the power-on virtual machines is quite simply and works! (vmrun list) But the captureScreen command doesn't work. I have tryed serveral commandline options. for example: vmrun -T ws captureScreen %VMPATH% %OUTPUTPATH% I get no error message, but the console is blocked (and the command never finishes). I have also tryed to include -gu USERNAME and -gp PASSWORD, but it result in the same problem. Sorry for my English and thanks for your help in advance!!!

  • Upgrade an Ubuntu 8.04 installation with VMware Server 1.0.8 and lots of guest OSes to Something Els

    I have an Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) host machine which is running a whole slew of virtual machines in VMWare Server 1.0.8. Among other guest OSes, there is every release version of Ubuntu since 6.06, OpenSolaris 2009.06, and Windows XP. Right now I access these VMs from a variety of client OSes as well; Linux and Windows via the VMWare server console, and MacOS via X-forwarding the host machine's server console. I'd like to upgrade the host to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), but from what I can tell, getting VMWare Server 1.x to work on a more recent version of Linux is a real pain. While VMware Server 2.x is a bit easier, it's still not packaged as Debian packages, so installing security updates is a big chore. As long as I'm upgrading anyway, I'd like to move to a virtualization solution that will allow me to automate applying updates. The options that I'm aware of right now are KVM (managed via virt-manager) and VirtualBox (as managed by its own tools or via its own libvirt bindings), but I'm open to other suggestions. For each option, I'd like to know how do I convert my guest images to the new format? am I going to have to re-activate my Windows guests (alternatively, "If the virtual hardware is different by default, can I avoid re-activation by changing some virtualization configuration to provide me with more similar virtual hardware") what are the management options like for each client OS (mac, linux, windows)?     I recently attempted to install Windows 8 Enterprise Edition in VMware Workstation. It specified that Easy Install would be used, and requested for the product key, for which I entered the generated MSDN key. This didn't work - the installation goes into a loop with each iteration of the loop ending with the following screen: The guest reboots and the process repeats after clicking "OK". Has anyone been able to successfully install their MSDN image with Easy Install in Workstation?

    Hi, i am trying to install the workstation components of sql server 2008 on my windows xp sp2 machine and during the setup, the only options i have to install are the database engine and sdk. all of the other options including books, workstation components are missing. Using the same installer disks i was able to install the whole works on a server. I do not have any version of sql currently installed on the xp machine.. am i doing something wrong?

I've searched the VMware site and to say it's badly organised is an understatement! I've been able to find general setup guides but nothing with a specific focus on security.   • Disabling parallel network connections on workstation

    Is it possible to disable prarallel network connections on workstation, when workstation is connected to corporate LAN? I want to avoid users bypassing Internet access policies by concurently connect to LAN and 3G/Hotspot. We have many developers and they have local administrator rights on workstations. Developers should be able to connect virutual networks (VMware/VirutalPC/Hyper-V/VirutalBox). Other users should be able to use only one network connection concurently.
