  I'm getting the error 0x800F0A12 which is described here. bcdedit says: C:\>bcdedit.exe Der Speicher für die Startkonfigurationsdaten konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden. (English: Couldn't open the start configuration. Couldn't find the file.) (off topic: how can I get those messages in English?) I played around and I assume that is because the system partition C:\ is not on the first BIOS disk. There are 4 disks in my PC. On one of them (shown as the 4th in Windows drive manager) contains Windows, whereby the system-reserved NTFS partition is the first primary and the second primary is my main Windows system partition. A few more partitions follow with other (non-NTFS) stuff. I was able to set the first two disks offline (via the Windows drive manager). For the 3rd disk, it says that it cannot set the BIOS 0 disk offline. How can I ignore that and still install SP1? I don't want to rewire/resetup my disks.

  I have a VPS running Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I'm able to connect using Remote Desktop from my home PC (Windows 7), personal laptop (Windows 7), and work laptop (Windows XP). However, I cannot connect from my work PC (Windows 7). I receive the error "The logon attempt failed" in the RDP client, and the server event log shows "An account failed to log on" with this explanation: Subject: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: - Account Domain: - Logon ID: 0x0 Logon Type: 3 Account For Which Logon Failed: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: username Account Domain: hostname Failure Information: Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password. Status: 0xc000006d Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Process Information: Caller Process ID: 0x0 Caller Process Name: - Network Information: Workstation Name: JESSE-PC Source Network Address: - Source Port: - Detailed Authentication Information: Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Transited Services: - Package Name (NTLM only): - Key Length: 0 I can connect from the offending work PC if I start up Windows XP Mode and use the RDP client inside that. The server is part of a domain but my account is local, so I'm logging in using a username of the form hostname\username. None of the clients are part of a domain. The server uses a self-signed certificate, and connecting from home I get a warning about that, but connecting from work I just get the logon error.

• Win7 Aero disabled due to mirror drivers following TightVNC use, cannot re-enable

  I recently installed TightVNC, and used it to access my desktop from my phone. When I did so, my desktop reported that Aero had been disabled due to an application being run that didn't support it. I now cannot re-enable Aero, despite having closed the TightVNC server (and indeed having rebooted a number of times since). Windows 7 troubleshooting reports the following: Close programs using mirror drivers To allow Aero effects to be displayed, close any programs that use mirror drivers (a type of display driver), such as Windows Remote Assistance and Windows Live Mesh. The troubleshooting system appears to attempt to automatically fix that, but fails. I can see nothing in the task manager that obviously uses mirror drivers; in particular, I can see nothing that looks like TightVNC in there. Starting and exiting TightVNC makes no difference. Google has turned up nothing that looks useful so far, either, although my Google-fu isn't great and I may just be searching for the wrong things. There's another question that reports the same problem, caused by LogMeIn rather than TightVNC, but the solution listed there doesn't work—TightVNC doesn't install LogMeIn mirror drivers, for obvious reasons.

  Vista crashed on my DELL XPS 1730 laptop. Again. I deleted the RAID array, created a new one and started to install Window 7 from DVD. During the initial phase of installation the setup pop ups this: Load Driver: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing... I can then insert other media to load the drivers, but it can't find any. I checked the DELL site for drivers but I can only find firmware for the drive. Which driver do I need, and where can I download it?

• Nokia Pc Suite problems with bluetooth (win7)

  I have a new Nokia C5-00 and a HP 620. The Bluetoothdriver are installed and the windows Bluetoothstack finds the mobile. After installing Nokia PC Suite I am asked to choose a connection method. As I click on Bluetooth the Nokia PC Suite shows an error message: "Cannot use the connection type.Check that all the needd hardware,software and drivers are available. (Code: OpenMedia)" I tried to switch it on and off via the "wireless" key on the laptop. The HP Software for the button shows that the Bluetooth is deactivated and advices me to go to the device manager and activate the Bluetooth device. Strangely the Bluetooth symbol (I guess from the windows Bluetoothstack) pops up at the same time and I can use the Bluetooth in it's basic windows features, but still nokia suite won't work. ideas????

• VirtualBox: Can't get Bridged Networking to work (Win7 host)

  I'm trying to set up a virtual LAMP server, including sharing files between the guest OS (Ubuntu Server) and the host OS (Windows 7) using samba. I think my problem is that I can't get Bridged (or Host-Only) networking to work in VirtualBox. I can boot the Linux VM just fine with NAT, but then can't access any services on it directly (except after port-forwarding port 80)(my understanding is that port-forwarding works because I'm not running a web server on the host OS, and therefore it can forward traffic to the unused port 80). I don't think that port-forwarding samba traffic (from the host to the guest) will work since I think that the host OS is using those ports. When I turn off NAT and turn bridged networking on I get an error. The VM fails to boot, with a dialog popping up (title: VirtualBox - Error) that says "Failed to open a session for the virtual machine UbuntuServer. Configuration error: Failed to get MAC address (VERR_CFGM_VALUE_NOT_FOUND). I'm hoping that once this is resolved then samba will work ok :) Any advice on this would be great (how to fix it would be wonderful, next steps for troubleshooting would be great, too :) )

• "Error loading operating system": Win7/Vista

  Hey fellas, Have this computer for about 2 years now. Originally had Vista installed, now have Windows 7 installed. Both on separate hard drives. Also have another drive used strictly for media. About a week ago, the Vista hard drive started going on its way out. Was getting problems on startup. After a few BIOS settings, I was able to get into Windows 7 and everything was fine. However, I started remembering the startup issues, so I deleted the bootup for Vista under msconfig. Didn't restart the computer at that time, though. For a few days, everything was ok. Last night I play a little poker, then hit the hay. I wake up to a good ole "Error loading operating system" on the screen. Just wonderful. Looks like the computer restarted overnight (auto updates, anyone?). So, after a big of finagling and half hearted tries, I can't get past the "Error loading operating system" screen. FWIW, in the BIOS it can see my hard drives fine. So I move on. I get my Windows 7 installation disk to try and do a repair. Go in the BIOS, change boot priority to DVD drive, and we're on our merry way. After loading from the disc, I first try jumping into the "Repair your computer" section. That opens up the System Recovery Options. However, this is where the problem comes into play. I don't see any operating systems here. Nada. What's odd though is if I click on the Load Drivers button, I can see my Windows 7 partition (C:), and can go through the files and folders without issue. What do I do at this point? I can't repair it. It seems like I can traverse the hard drive without issue when in an open dialog in the System Recovery Options, but I'm getting the good ole "Error loading computer" on bootup. • emails not sending from CentOS 5.6 VM on Win7 via PHP code

  I am experiencing an issue where my CentOS 5.6 (Final) VM running on Windows 7 has stopped sending emails from my PHP code. I'm confident this isn't a coding issue as I have the exact same code running in my office and emails send correctly from there, hence why I believe this to be a networking/configuration issue. In my /etc/hosts/ file on my VM I have the following: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.9 crmpicco.co.uk m.crmpicco.co.uk dev53.localdomain When I run setup on my VM the DNS configuration is set to dev53.localdomain and my Primary DNS is 192.168.0.1.   I have multiple .rar files in multiple folders like this: C:\Docs\Folder1\rarfile1-1.rar C:\Docs\Folder1\rarfile1-2.rar C:\Docs\Folder1\rarfile1-3.rar C:\Docs\Folder2\rarfile2-1.rar C:\Docs\Folder2\rarfile2-2.rar C:\Docs\Folder2\rarfile2-3.rar C:\Docs\Folder3\rarfile3-1.rar C:\Docs\Folder3\rarfile3-2.rar C:\Docs\Folder3\rarfile3-3.rar I want to move all of the .rar files to the parent directory 'C:\Docs'. I have a lot more than 3 folders, so I was thinking of making a batch file or something. What would be the commands to do this? Thanks

• Combine drivers from multiple Win7 installs to single image

  I need to prepare a Windows 7 image with drivers for multiple systems (Lenovo laptops). I currently have an image prepared on one laptop type but need to grab the drivers appropriate for the other laptop types as well to ensure that it works on all systems. From what I can tell, the procedure will be: create a boot CD with imageX take a .wim image prepared on the first type of systems take .wim images from the other systems mount the other images in WAIK extract the drivers from the other images inject the drivers into the first .wim boot a system with the boot CD and redeploy the updated .wim image into the Windows partition take an image of the drive with usual imaging tools This all seems a little too convoluted, but I'm willing to do it to get the proper drivers into the image. This is (seemingly) necessarily complicated by having more than one OS on the disk image. Am I on the right track?

• Network access lags for Win7 when server network utilization is high

  We have a Dell PE2950 file server running Windows 2008, hosting a DFS namespace of ~1.2 TB. This server has two Broadcom 1Gbps NICs teamed together. When there is high traffic going to the server across the network (greater than 200 Mbps), any Windows 7 client accessing a DFS share at the time experiences severe performance problems. For example: Computer A has an AutoCAD drawing opened directly from the DFS share. Performance is normal, not causing any issues. Computer B begins a file transfer, putting a 11GB file onto a different DFS namespace, on the same server Computer A immediately notices lag while using AutoCAD. The cursor momentarily freezes within AutoCAD every 10 seconds or so, and any browsing of the DFS share is extremely slow. Computer B completes file transfer, and performance resumes to normal for Computer A. This is only affecting Windows 7 clients, using a variety of hardware (desktop + laptop). All of our Windows XP clients see no performance impact during the file transfer. Things I have tried with no change: Had Computer A work from an entirely different RAID array from the file transfer destination Updated NIC drivers on clients and server Enabled TCP offload and receive side scaling on the server NIC (previously disabled when the issue began) Antivirus disabled during file transfer I am currently having a user test applications other than AutoCAD when the file transfer occurs, and will update the question with that result. Does anyone have any recommendations for resolution or additional troubleshooting steps?

• Logout trouble with alternative shells (Win7 Home Premium x64)

  I've tried bb4win and Litestep, and every time I need to log out for some reason (shutdown and all included), the system hangs and the spinning icon next to the "Logging out" text stops spinning. Changing the shell in registry for both local machine and current user causes this behavior. Any ideas on what might cause this? Alternatvely, what steps can I take to figure out what is going wrong? In Linux, you are able to open things in a framebuffer and examine the output, but with Windows it is not so clear to me how to see what is happening under the hood, especially with this Home Premuim version. Update: Since logging out normally to switch the shell back to Explorer doesn't work normally, I have to end Litestep first. However, when I do so, an Explorer navigation window pops up (not the taskbar). This also occurs with bb4win.

  Somehow I went to open a shortcut and windows couldn't find the target but instead of pointing the shortcut to the exe it pointed the lnk file handler to the exe, so now all my lnk files are trying to be opened by the borderlands game. WTF? I'm guessing I can do it by resetting the .lnk entry in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, but I don't know what to set it to.

Launching the chrome.exe executable results in iexplore.exe being launched instead. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling chrome several times to no avail. • Recovering drive via boot to Win7 setup command prompt

  I am trying to recover data from two old IDE drives. Drive1 has been successful, but something is wrong with Drive2. It does not appear as a drive letter. Due to limited legacy hardware, the only way i can see these drives is to boot using windows 7 setup and goto the command prompt. Without going further as to why, my question is how i can access the data in this command prompt. I discovered DISKPART command and while a first time user, it looked like something that can fix my problem. Here are the results of my diskpart commands. At the bottom is a image of the commands taken with a camera. The Drive2 is present because when using the diskpart command, I can see it. How can I copy the information using a robocopy script if the drive letter is not available? how can I assign a drive letter? Is there any repair command I need to execute? When i execute DISKPART, the following is what i see. DISKPART> LIST DISK Disk### Status Size Free Disk 5 Online 37 GB 2048 KB So then I select disk 5. DISKPART> SELECT DISK 5 "Disk 5 is now the selected disk" When I list partition DISKPART> LIST PARTITION Partition ### Type Size Partition 1 Primary 101 MB Partition 2 Primary 37 GB So I select partition 2 "Partition 2 is now the selected partition." I then try to assign a drive letter DISKPART> ASSIGN LETTER=G "There is no volume specified." "Please select a volume and try again." When i list volume the drive is not present. One of my test is to turn off the machine and ping it. For some reason, ping sets errorlevel to 0 *

• Cloned Win7: Keyboard doesn't work

  I cloned my old Windows7 hard disk to a shiny new Seagate Momentus XT 500GB using the free EaseUs Disk Copy tool on my laptop. After the clone process I used the Windows 7 installation disc to start the automatic startup repair. This took maybe 15 minutes and then my cloned disk was able to start. Now the cloned disk boots until the login screen and then I can't do anything because my keyboard just doesn't work. I tried connecting an external USB keyboard but this didn't help. The mouse is working fine. Note that the keyboard works fine in BIOS and in the Windows startup options menu. I booted into safe mode and again the keyboard is not working at all. I also noticed that the letters "Press CTRL+ALT+Delete to login" are now shown in italic font but they used to be shown non-italic on the original disk. I have now replaced the clone with the original disk again and from here everything works fine. Doesn't anybody have an idea how I can get my keyboard back?

  I have a stand-alone pc system with two 2 tb harddiscs, one of which configured as Raid1, i.e. mirorring. The operational drive is partitioned. I use an external 1 tb harddisc for back-up using Windows 7 back-up facility which will be swapped weekly and stored on other premises. I back-up all partitions AND allow a system back-up. All application software is on the C: partition. Questions: How can I see whether Raid1 is working; i.e. is doing its job. All I see now is a status message in the start-up procedure that says its status is normal. How can I see used or available space on Raid 1? The Win-7 backup allows for 1 schedule only as far as I can see. I want daily back-ups of data. However due to the single schedule I am forced to do the time-consuming system back-up and c: back-up as well. Is there a way to activate two schedules allowing a frequent (daily) data back-up and a system back-up with c: drive back-up on a say weekly basis? Of course it can be forced by hand but I am likely to forget that. I am not the programming type of person so looking for simple and controllable solutions. Thank you - any help is apreciated.

  I have a 500 GB USB-disk which has been used as a backup device for a few years now, but now fails without telling me why. This is a Dell box with Intel USB-controllers (so the NVIDEA problem does not apply here). I have previously had problems with a Git package marking a non-existent directory for backup (adding it make the backup succeede). The inaccessible boot partition problem described in Windows Backup fails with 0x80070002: "The system cannot find the file specified" does not apply to me. I would appreciate hints on where to look to identify why my backup fails so I can fix it.

  I've upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 (64bit) and I found that the very convenient Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall will not work on this version. I hear the Windows 7 firewall is good enough(even though it never prompts for outbound connections) but Kerio had a nice network monitor feature which showed all applications with inbound and outbound connections and the current speed and bytes transferred for each one. Is there any software out there that can give me similar monitoring as what Kerio does? TCPView is almost as good, but doesnt show transfer statistics.
