  • Should I close database connections after use in PHP?

    I wonder if I should close any unnecessary database connection inside of my PHP scripts. I am aware of the fact that database connections are closed implicitly when the block stops executing and 'manually' closing the connections could kinda bloat the codebase with unnecessary code. But shouldn't I do so in order to make by code as readable and as easy understandable as possible, while also preventing several possible issues during run time? Also, if I would do, would it be enough to unset() my database object?

  • XNA ModelMesh.Draw vs GraphicsDevice.DrawIndexedPrimitives

    I am using XNA 4.0 and I wonder if drawing models with multiple meshes is better by filling the vertex and index buffers first and calling GraphicsDevice.DrawIndexedPrimitives() or by simply using good ol' foreach(...) {ModelMesh.Draw()}. Is it possible to add data to vertex/index buffers at all in order to pack all the models on the scene in them and then call Draw only once per frame? I would appreciate a link to an in-depth explanation. Thanks.

    I've installed Ubuntu 12.10 from PXE, using the linux & initrd.gz files and I'd like to update it to Ubuntu Desktop (with unity, the shopping len and everything in between). I've heard that I can do it by installing the 'ubuntu-deskop' meta package, however I wonder if anyone has actually done it and if that's enough to get an identical Ubuntu installation as if I had installed it with the LiveDvd.     Do you need to have good spatial sense to be a good programmer? I have next to nothing of it (I think it has to do with the differing vision of my eyes). I've already coded quite little things but wonder if this interferes with the ability to 'imagine' the assembly of the code in case of a more complex program?     There is a common practice in TDD to write a test before fix to avoid regression and simplify fixing. I just wonder what if the test and fix will be written by different people, total spent time will be almost the same but as now three people will think about possible failures (+tester) we increase probability that fix will cover all possible failure scenarios. Does this practice make sense or it will just waste additional time needed for one more person to familiarize with bug?

To my displeasure I find that the culprit more often than not has to do with libreoffice. I know I can untick those connected with libreoffice but I wonder if there is an elegant way; may be a small program in between that helps me untick those programs that I wish to stay un-updated.

    I have never charged my clients for lunch-time or breaks, and I have never paid a subcontractor for it before either (at least not to my knowledge). My view has always been that subcontracting has many positives (higher pay, autonomy, etc.) and many negatives (no benefits, etc.) and one of the negatives is you get paid for productive time, which does not include lunch or breaks. But I still wonder, should subcontractors be paid like employees, for lunch breaks, coffee breaks etc.?
