• Redirect example.com to www.example.com VPS & Apache2

  I have a VPS and a domain name registered with the provider. When I enter www.example.com my site is displayed correctly, but entering example.com does not work. I am able to ping www.example.com. I added the following line to my apache2 default vhosts file: ServerName example.com ServerAlias www.example.com But this did not work. The VPS is a Debian5 OS. Any ideas? Note: There is no option via a provided control panel to add this, it's a basic package I purchased I know this post answers it but there are no extra comments and I'd like to know if it's the best way: way to redirect page to www using virtual host configuration in sites-available for apache2?   Recently I started Multi Sites on my VPS which is having Centos 64 bit. Currently I am having two sites live and each is working fine, Now the problem is in the URL I have the following sites: http://mbas.co.in http://u-k.in mbas was the very first site on my VPS Now in URL if I type http://mbas.co.in or http://www.mbas.co.in both redirect to my mbas website But for the second website, If in URL I type http://u-k.in then it redirects to the u-k website correctly but if I type http://www.u-k.in then it redirects me to mbas website. • Proper procedure - sftp access to www folder - To be able to upload files

  My www folder is root:root. What should it be? My site works perfectly but maybe I am doing something wrong. My nginx.conf says user is 'nginx'. Should I be changing the www onwership and group to that or something else? Mainly I want to be able to sftp into the www folder using FileZilla. Preferably only allow access to the www folder. I want to be able to upload the website files but I just don't know the proper procedure. I have tried changing owners and groups but I get worried some part of the stack will not like it. For example does nginx play along, and php? I thought about having a sftp group or even an sftp user. But I don't want to go down a path that should be avoided. What should I be doing with my setup?

  I used make-dummmy-cert that comes with apache 2.2 and ssl_mod to make a self-signed certificate, I tried www.domain.com domain.com *.domain.com, none of them would work for both www.domain.com and domain.com. The browser would say The certificate is only valid for domain.com( or www.domain.com or *.domain.com respectively) how do I make a self-signed cert that would work for both cases?

  I have a domain for my site: example.com I am also running local DNS with these lines: www IN CNAME server.<host_provider>.com. dev IN CNAME server.<host_provider>.com. So www.example.com and dev.example.com go to production and development sites, respectively, that are hosted by a host company. In my Apache configuration for the main site, I'm running a rewrite rule like this: RewriteEngine ON RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$|!dev\.example\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www\.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=302,L,NE] This rule seems to work, as when you are off the network and go to example.com in the browser, you get redirected to www.example.com. The problem is when I'm on the network, and I go to example.com I get an error page, saying page can't be found. No server errors; just a page can't be found, as if the local DNS is causing it to stop looking at that point. I'm also using Nettica for DNS service and have this A record in place: example.com Host (A) Default xxx.xx.xxx.xx This handles the external DNS, but my problem seems to be related to my internal DNS. For example, inside my network, I can go to servers on the network with addresses like this: server.example.com server1.example.com server2.example.com These are configured in my local DNS. I'm just not sure how to get past the "empty" subdomain and go to example.com. Adding to this since it might not be clear. If I'm out side the example.com network, on another network, like example123.com, then when I go to example.com I'm redirected to www.example.com as expected, eg, the Apache rewrite rule is working.   Ive got a website (run on Ubuntu Server) that needs to modify and delete files, every now and again it comes across a file that it needs to run "chmod" on in order to perform it's operations. However it seems as tho the 'www' user does not have permission to run 'chmod' on any files. So I'm looking for the command to allow the 'www' user to do its thing on files inside the /var/www folder and also the /var/logs folder for example. Thanks.

  I've had no problem with vhosts before, but for some reason this one isn't pointing to the right document root. The domain is pointing to the correct IP, apache sees no errors with the config file in sites-available, yet it just isn't pointing correctly. • How can I select a value matching my input from a TypeAhead control using WWW::Mechanize?

  So ordinarily the element I want to pick from a list would be populated on a page and I'd just find it and pick it. But I'm dealing with a control that doesn't populate list elements until some input has been stuck into a text box, after which it gives me a list of recommendations. For an example of the kind of list I'm talking about think of Facebook's "People, Places, and Things" search field. I want to plug a string into this text box, select the same string from the list of recommendations, and submit the form. The issue I'm having right now is I can't seem to get Mechanize to even recognize the field is there. I examine a dump of $mech->find_all_inputs and it isn't listed. Is this kind of field just beyond Mechanize's jurisdiction?

• Deployment and Ownership issues

  As an extreme newbie, I am having difficulty managing ownership and permissions on my first box. What I can't figure out is how to deploy using one user, we will call him deploy and operate my php application with www-data user. Currently as it stands, I know my server runs as www-data through this function <?php echo(exec("whoami")); ?> but I am having to chown between deploy and www-data every time I deploy. There has got to be an easier way to deploy with one user and still run as www-data. EDIT: Here is the output from ls- l on the folder in question. You will see user deploy and group www-pub, the group is from an attempt to add the two different users to a new group and chown one of them in the hopes that they both would have the permissions (newb alert) drwxrwxr-x 4 deploy www-pub 4096 Mar 7 01:41 example.com I am using capistrano for deployment under the user deploy then once its done i chown to www-data, otherwise I can't use php to manipulate files. I am also unsure how to even change which user apache is running.

• virtual host setup: can't access wordpress site without www

  I would like to access my site both with and without using the www. Currently it only works with. Leaving out the www just goes to a blank page. Also, wp-admin just loads a blank page too. I have set an A record for mysite.com and www.mysite.com, both pointing to my static Bitnami IP. I also have a subdomain mapped to another directory that is working just fine (conference.mysite.com and www.conference.mysite.com). I'm using a Bitnami stack on an AWS EC2 micro instance.   I'm currently trying to set up my personal webpage. I am using a VPS and have manually installed Wordpress, and everything seems to work... except if I go to the non-www version of my website, it comes up with a page not found. www.andrewrockefeller.com <-- Works andrewrockefeller.com <-- Does not (and I want to redirect it to www.andrewrockefeller.com) I have tried adding RewriteEngine functionality to my .htaccess, and that isn't working. I have also tried adding the 'most-voted' method of adding to my default file (which apache2.conf pulls from: <VirtualHost *> ServerName andrewrockefeller.com Redirect 301 / http://www.andrewrockefeller.com/ </VirtualHost> Seeing how many people are able to get the above working, is there something else I may be missing to allow that to function? • Using naked domain in apache, no "www" on domain in httpd.conf

  Incredibly there is no good tutorial or easy reference guide for using naked domains (no subdomain) as the primary URI online that I could find. I'm trying to configure this to happen in my httpd.conf in apache. Since I'm still a relative newb to this server stuff, trying to figure it out myself all I could do was configure some nasty redirect loops and error 400's. There's plenty of notes for the more common: http:// -- https:// and naked to -- www. and a ton of .htaccess stuff (not interested) What I want is http://www.domain.com -- http://domain.com The most helpful thing I found was this: Multiple domains (including www-"subdomain") on apache? I ended using the solution mentioned by ceejayoz in that post that some folks noted was messy and complicated because it got the desired result but I'd like to know the best practice for this in the future.   I have a websites that should be completely accessible for Apache(www-data user) and I have an ftp user(that has the same username on the server: user1) that should be able to update the website. I need the user to be able to add files to the website directory, but the www-data should have a full access to the added files. user1 is a member of www-data group. For now when user1 uploads file to the server the file has a rights: 644, but I need 664. How I could organise it. Many thanks

One of my SEO team-member argues for single point access. According to him search engine’s crawler see 2 different name with same content. It is not good and we should configure domain in such a way that if user open example.com then browser automatically get redirected to www.example.com. Now I have 2 questions Does above argument is valid? If yes then what changes I need to do in my DNS?

• sendmail on Ubuntu won't send from www-data user

  I if call mail() function in PHP from webserver (running as www-data) i get an error sending email. • .htaccess redirect for www in parent folder and children react

  We were having a problem with the Norton seal not showing up on our affiliate marketing landing pages (landers). Turns out, the Norton seal was super picky about the "www." prefix. I had folder paths like /lp/cmpx where x was a number 1-100 and indicated advertising campaign number. So, to remedy this, I stuck this in my .htaccess file right after the RewriteEngine On line: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/lp/cmp1/$1 [R=302,QSA,NC,L] Trouble is, I had to do that under every campaign folder, changing cmp1 to whatever the folder name was. Therefore, my question is... Is there a way I can do this with an .htaccess file under the parent folder (/lp in this case) and it will work for each of the children? EDIT: Note that I stuck an .htaccess file in /lp just now to test: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/lp/$1 [R=302,QSA,NC,L] This yielded no effect to the /lp/cmpx folders underneath, to my dismay.

• httpd running as _www instead of www as it used to

  OSX Mountain Lion and Apache 2.2.22. I have always had the httpd.conf set as: User www Group www and it was running as such. Until today. Rebooted the server for another reason and when I tried to make some changes to a website via FTP this evening, it said access denied. Got to looking at the processes and httpd is now running as _www. WTH? Now of course all of my users are getting denied messages I assume because they were all created and permitted with the www user, not _www. Any idea why this happened or what I may have done to cause it?
