• Is this a bad time to be majoring in computer science?

  There has been a lot of media attention paid in recent months and years to the increase in CS majors and the possibility of a second tech bubble. Some news reports have suggested that as more people enter CS, the market could be flooded with CS professionals and jobs could be increasingly difficult to find. Is this a bad time to be majoring in computer science? Edit: I'm a non-trad student who allready has a Bachelor's degree in economics and will be pursuing a CS degree starting this upcoming summer semester at the Univ of Kansas. I've been programming for about two/three years and just need a more formal education to fill the holes in my head. I have an interest in CS, it's just that I am worries about the prospects for the future.

• Developing an AI opponent for Monopoly

  i want to develop an AI opponent for the Board Game Monopoly. I want to implement the whole Game with Prolog (XPCE). The probability for a field on the Board being hit, can be computed with Markov Chains. I already know some "best practices" like "after 50% of the playing time it does not make sense to buy out of jail because in jail you get renting fees for your fields but you don't have to pay for other fields as long as you stay in prison". The interesting question always is: buy a streetfield ? buy houses / hotels ? how much ? so i think i would have to compute some kind of future liquidity .. does anyone know how to pack that into an algorithm or how to translate it to prolog ?

• Database structure for various items

  I'm building a sqlite database for an android app which will hold a list of items, each of which have different characteristics. Some of the characteristics are available for all objects, some are only relevant for a subset of objects. For example, all my items have a name, a description, an image. Some items will also have an expiration date, others wont. Some will have a size, some wont. Etc... How should I build my Database, as I don't know how many characteristics may be added in the future, and knowing I should be able to filter the list by any characteristic ?

• Project OpenPTK Release 2.1 Available

  The OpenPTK owners are pleased to announce that release 2.1 is available.  It has been "tagged" in the svn repository. See the download page for details.   This release is an update to version 2.0.  This release contains bug fixes, enhancements to existing capabilities, and new features.  The most notable change in this release is the use of maven, instead of ant, for the build process.  The adoption of maven has made the project more modular, reduced its download size (less bundled jar files) and will enable the future support of Project OpenPTK in a maven repository. What are the best techniques for forking a project whilst still maintaining the ability to merge future changes from the original project into your own forked repository using Git? • Steps after SQL Injection detected

  I've come across SQL injection vulnerabilities on my companies ecommerce page. It was fairly poorly put together. I believe I have prevented future attempts however we are getting calls about fraudulent credit card charges on our site and others. This leads me to believe that someone was able to get a list of our credit card numbers. What doesn't make sense is that we don't store that information and we use Authorize.net for the transaction. If someone was able to get the CC#s, what should I do next? Inform ALL of our customers that someone broken into our system and stole their information? I have a feeling that will be bad for business.

• Should I Learn C/C++ Even If I Just Want To Do Web Programming?

  My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming. Only then move to PHP/MySQL/HTTP and start working on practical programming projects. Path 2 Start directly with PHP/MySQL/HTTP and getting my hands dirty with practical projects right away. What would you guys recommend?

• Help file formats - MSHA files v CHM files

  Recently I was tasked with producing a help file from a C#/WPF/Crystal Reports application using Sandcastle. I have previously blogged about the problems in doing that and the change that is going into the next version of Sandcastle that allows the vagaries of Crystal (this missing BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) to be handled. At http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/devdocs/thread/0b110502-f5bb-4c56-96a5-4347a2a7a68a/, I describe how I tried each of the formats. Two of the formats could not be built and the error messages were not exactly helpful as to the cause. These two formats turned out to be obsolete. The MSHA format worked but was not suitable for a standalone application, so that left me with the older CHM format. I therefore asked on that thread "will the HTML Help 1 (CHM) format continue to be supported for the foreseeable future?".Rob Chandler, MVP in help systems, gave a very helpful answer, to the effect that there is not yet a replacement for the CHM format.

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! For the first time ever, I actually want to contribute to open source because I believe in this tech. • What grammatical tense should I write my specifications in?

  We are currently writing functional and technical specifications in a two column format; summary sentence and technical detail. The details often refer to an appendix with diagrams, layout designs ect. However I am struggling with what tense to write it in: With past tense as if the work is done I struggle to show highlight extensions of exiting work. Future tense as in it needs to do X starts to sound like a to do list or Tense neutral very hard as it has either going to be done or is done. To add further confusion this specification may be read by people who do not have English as a first language.

  I'm about to embark on a 2D gaming project. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered? • Google App Engine: How to be notified when APIs change or become available?

  I am thinking about writing a GAE app but am a little hesitant because the EULA gives Google full rights to change their APIs anytime they want, for any reason. Obviously, they'd be out of business quick if they just 'upped and refactored their entire APIs, so I have to imagine they have some kind of notification system, perhaps even an RSS feed, etc. to notify developers well in advance of looming changes, or new features coming out in future releases. However, for the life of me I can't seem to find any trace of the existence of such a notification system. Perhaps the Google forums is the only place to get such updates? I guess I'm asking any battle-worn GAE veterans for re-assurance that there are reliable ways of getting notifications about policy or API changes from Google such that I could react and make the necessary app changes without production breaking or impacting any clients. • Ubuntu 13.04 is showing some error while opening my computer

  Few months before when I was using Ubuntu 12.04 then I found some errors while starting my computer. Due to this problem I had given my CPU to a shop to repair it I don't know what he has done to my CPU but I only know that finally I got my CPU with Ubuntu 13.04. The technician was unable to make any partition and I also think that he had installed 13.04 over 12.04 and so now my computer is showing some error when I'm starting my computer the error is as follows: error: attempt to read or write outside of the disk 'hd0'. grub rescue _ Before showing this error, few times my computer was working very slow. So kindly someone tell me that is there any way by which I can start my computer. Please also tell me that what things I have to keep in mind while using Ubuntu so that in future I find no difficulties(errors) while using Ubuntu.

We're using auto-responders to deliver key information to people who complete a form asking for additional information. The goal is to reject forms that are submitted by competitors. It doesn't need to be bullet proof; the main idea is to reject and form that has an email address associated with a competitor's domain. Can anyone help? Thanks!

• git changing head not reflected on co-dev's branch

  Basically, we undid history. I know this is bad, and I am already committed to avoiding this at all costs in the future, but what is done is done. Anyway, I issued a git push origin <1_week_old_sha:master to undo some bad commits. I then deleted a buggered branch called release(which had also received some bad commits) from remote and then branched a new release off master. I pushed this to remote. So basically, remote master & release are clones and just how I want them. The issue is if I clone the repo anew(or work in my current repo) everything looks great....but when my co-devs delete their release branch and create a new one based off the new remote release I created, they still see all the old junk I tried to remove. I feel this has to do with some local .git files mistaking the new branch release for the old release. Any thoughts? Thanks.

• Implementing Tagging using Core Data on the iPhone

  I have an application that uses CoreData and I'm trying to figure out the best way to implement tagging and filtering by tag. For my purposes, if I was doing this in raw SQLite I would only need three tables, tags, item_tags and of course my items table. Then filtering would be as simple as joining between the three tables where only items are related to the given tags. Quite straightforward. But, is there a way to do this in CoreData and utilizing NSFetchedResultsController? It doesn't seem that NSPredicate give you the ability to filter through joins. NSPredicate's aren't full SQL anyway so I'm probably barking up the wrong tree there. I'm trying to avoid reimplementing my app using SQLite without CoreData since I'm enjoying the performance CoreData gives me in other areas. Yes, I did consider (and built a test implementation) diving into the raw SQLite that CoreData generates, but that's not future proof and I want to avoid that, too. Has anyone else tried to tackle tagging/filtering with CoreData in a UITableView with NSFetchedResultsController
