• How can I programmatically drop a SQL Server database from .NET code

  I'm trying to drop a SQL Server database from .NET code. I've tried using the SMO classes but get an exception saying the database is in use. Then I tried executing a query (opening a SqlConnection, executing a SqlCommand), along the lines of: ALTER DATABASE foo SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE (pause) DROP DATABASE foo But still I get an exception saying the database is in use. How do I do this? (Or, how does SQL Server Management Studio implement the Drop database and close existing connections?)

• Unable to create PDB file

  For some reason this error started popping up today on one of my projects. Error 1 Unable to write to output file 'C:\MyProject\Release\MyProject.pdb': Unspecified error If I go into advanced compile options and change it to not generate and debug info, my project compiles fine. I have tried setting the permissions on the Release folder to full for everyone, so I would assume it's not a permissions issue. Also, I don't see anything in my log files that would provide me with more information about the issue. Does anyone know why this error would just start showing up or a way to fix it? Thanks. Update: I have rebooted my machine, restarted VS several times and have even completely deleted the existing OBJ file where the issue is happening. It's still giving me the same error. This is a simple one project solution that was working fine just last week. It appears to be an issue with VS trying to build the PDB file because I can delete them out of the Release and Debug folders without issue. When I try rebuilding them VS will start creating the file (about 1.4MB is size) but I still get the error.

Would Read Committed Isolation be the correct isolation level?

  Hi, I want to display the Access Rights given to the Users for the particular module. I have Seven Tables such as RoleAccess, Roles, Functions, Module, SubModule, Company and Unit. RoleAccess is the Main Table. The AccessRights given will be stored in the RoleAccess Table only. RoleAccess Table has the following columns such as RoleID, CompanyID, UnitID, FunctionID, ModuleID, SubModuleID, Create, Update, Delete, Read, Approve. Here Create_f, Update_f, Delete_f, Read_f and Approve_f are flags. Company Table has two columns such as CompanyID and CompanyName. Unit Table has three columns such as UnitID, UnitName and CompanyID. Roles Table has four columns such as RoleID, RoleName, CompanyID and UnitID. Module Table has two columns such as ModuleID and ModuleName. SubModule Table has three columns such as ModuleID, SubModuleID, SubModuleName. Functions Table has five columns such as FunctionID, FunctionName, ModuleID and SubModuleID. At First, The RoleAccess Table does not contain any records. So I want to display the ModuleName, SubModuleName, FunctionName, CompanyID, RoleID, UnitID, FunctionID, ModuleID, SubModuleID, Create_f, Update_f, Delete_f, Read_f and Approve_f. If the AccessRights is assigned to the Particular RoleID means the flags in the search results will be 1 else it will be 0. I have witten one stored procedure but it displays the records based on the RoleID stored in the RoleAccess table. But I also want to display the Flags as 0 for the Roles not stored in the RoleAccess Table. I want the Stored Procedure for this. Any one please help me.

• Creating a Function in SQL Server with a Phone Number as a parameter and returns a Random Number

  Hi Guys, I am hoping someone can help me here as google is not being as forthcoming as I would have liked. I am relatively new to SQL Server and so this is the first function I have set myself to do. The outline of the function is that it has a Phone number varchar(15) as a parameter, it checks that this number is a proper number, i.e. it is 8 digits long and contains only numbers. The main character I am trying to avoid is '+'. Good Number = 12345678 Bad Number = +12345678. Once the number is checked I would like to produce a random number for each phone number that is passed in. I have looked at substrings, the like operator, Rand(), left(), Right() in order to search through the number and then produce a random number. I understand that Rand() will produce the same random number unless alterations are done to it but right now it is about actually getting some working code. Any hints on this would be great or even point me towards some more documentation. I have read books online and they haven't helped me, maybe I am not looking in the right places.   Hi all: I am working on a script, that needs to be run in many different SQL servers. Some of them, shared the same structure, in other words, they are identical, but the filegroups and the DB names are different. This is because is one per client. Anyway, I would like when running a script, If I chose the wrong DB, it should not be executed. I am trying to mantain a clean DB. here is my example, which only works for dropping a view if exists, but does not work for creating a new one. I also wonder how it would be for creating a stored procedure. • VSS keep resetting working folder a the root of the C: drive

  I have noticed several times (that is it does not happens all the time, but occurs regulary) that VSS has forgoten my working folder settings and re-set it to be a root of the C: drive. It is very annoying to find out that some of the files you have checked out and been working on are not in the same folder where you expect them to be (and it also pollutes the drive with a C:\SubProject1, C:\SubProject2 folders instead of keeping them all inside of C:\Work). Any recomendation to prevent VSS from doing this again and again. And yes, please, don't recomment switching to SVN, CVS, TFS etc - there are the rules I can't change.

• What is the cost in bytes for the overhead of a sql_variant column in SQL Server?

  I have a table, which contains many columns of float data type with 15 digit precision. Each column consumes 8 bytes of storage. Most of the time the data does not require this amount of precision and could be stored as a real data type. In many cases the value can be 0, in which case I could get away with storing a single byte. My goal here is to optimize space storage requirements, which is an issue I am facing working with a SQL Express 4GB database size limit. If byte, real and float data types are stored in a sql_variant column there is obviously some overhead involved in storing these values. What is the cost of this overhead? I would then need to evaluate whether I would actually end up in significant space savings (or not) switching to using sql_variant column data types. Thanks, Elan

• Consecutive build of VS2005 and VS2008 C++ projects causes LNK1104 error

  I have VS2005 and VS2008 installed on the same machine. I also have a common codebase that I build using both '05 and '08. For this purpose, I have 2 VC projects.. A '08 project called XYZ_2008.vcproj and a '05 project called XYZ_2005.vcproj, and the corresponding 2 slns as well. Both projects output dlls, libs and pdbs to the same output directory (all with appropriate _2005 and _2008 suffixes). Assuming that I am starting from a clean state, I first open XYZ_2005.sln (containing XYZ_2005.vcproj) in VS2005 and build it successfully. Then I close VS2005. Next, I open XYZ_2008.sln (containing XYZ_2008.vcproj) and build (not rebuild) it. At this point, I get an error saying: LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'mfc80u.lib' If now I rebuild the '08 solution, the error goes away and the build succeeds. The build also succeeds if I directly do a rebuild instead of a build for the '08 sln. In spite of everything being separate, the VS08 build seems to be picking up a MFC8 file (from VS05) instead of a MFC9 file. Can somebody please help out with this issue? Thanks in advance!

• How does C#'s DateTime.Now affect query plan caching in SQL Server?

  Given: Let's say we have a stored procedure. It reports data back to a user on a webpage. The user can set a date range. If the user sets today's date as the "end date," which includes today's data, the web app passes DateTime.Now to the sql proc. Let's say that one user runs a report--5/1/2010 to now--over and over several times. On the webpage, the user sees "5/1/2010" to "5/4/2010." But the web app passes DateTime.Now to the sql proc as the end date. So, the end date in the proc will always be different, although the user is querying a similar date range. Assume the number of records in the table and number of users are large. So any performance gains matter. Hence the importance of the question. Question: Does passing DateTime.Now as a parameter to a proc prevent SQL Server from caching the query plan? If so, then is the web app missing out on huge performance gains? Possible Solution: I thought DateTime.Today.AddDays(1) would be a possible solution. It would allow the user to get the latest data and always pass the same end date to the sql proc--"5/5/2010" in this case. Please speak to this as well. Sample proc and execution (if that helps to understand): CREATE PROCEDURE GetFooData @StartDate datetime @EndDate datetime AS SELECT * FROM Foo WHERE LogDate >= @StartDate AND LogDate < @EndDate Here's a sample execution using DateTime.Now: EXEC GetFooData '2010-05-01', '2010-05-04 15:41:27' -- passed in DateTime.Now Here's a sample execution using DateTime.Today.AddDays(1) EXEC GetFooData '2010-05-01', '2010-05-05' -- passed in DateTime.Today.AddDays(1) The same data is returned for both procs, since the current time is: 2010-05-04 15:41:27.

• SQL Server union selects built dynamically from list of words

  I need to count occurrence of a list of words across all records in a given table. If I only had 1 word, I could do this: select count(id) as NumRecs where essay like '%word%' But my list could be hundreds or thousands of words, and I don't want to create hundreds or thousands of sql requests serially; that seems silly. I had a thought that I might be able to create a stored procedure that would accept a comma-delimited list of words, and for each word, it would run the above query, and then union them all together, and return one huge dataset. (Sounds reasonable, right? But I'm not sure where to start with that approach...) Short of some weird thing with union, I might try to do something with a temp table -- inserting a row for each word and record count, and then returning select * from that temp table. If it's possible with a union, how? And does one approach have advantages (performance or otherwise) over the other?

• Find records IN BETWEEN Date Range

  Please see attached image I have a table which have FromDate and ToDate. FromDate is start of some event and ToDate is end of taht event. I need to find a record if search criteria is in between range of dates. e.g. If a record has FromDate 2010/15/5 and ToDate 2010/15/25 and my criteria is FromDate 2010/5/18 and ToDate is 2010/5/21 then this record should be in search results becasue this is in the range of 15 to 25.   I'm used to seeing temporary tables created with just the hash/number symbol, like this: CREATE TABLE #Test ( [Id] INT ) However, I've recently come across stored procedure code that specifies the schema name when creating temporary tables, for example: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[#Test] ( [Id] INT ) Is there any reason why you would want to do this? If you're only specifying the user's default schema, does it make any difference? Does this refer to the [dbo] schema in the local database or the tempdb database?
