  • Is Life Better as a Manager? [closed]

    - by foreyez
I've read similar posts to this, but I want to specifically target this question. This is mainly geared towards Developers that became Managers in their career. I want to know if you think being a Manager is a funner/better/more interesting life than a programmer's. (Or would you rather go back to being a programmer, if so why?) Thanks Note: Programmers that are not actively managing others please don't answer this question.

  • How do you approach tutorials

    - by aurel
I get lots of interesting tutorials through feeds and sometimes I implement them step by step, other times I just read through them and note anything that I do not know. When ever I implement them I takes a long time - starting the project, typing the code (as I feel there is no point to copy and paste ), then going back and forth between browser and editing program All in all, I am interested to know how do you learn from the tutorials (I'm no where close to being an expert). Or if you don't use tutorials, is there any other way to learn?

  • How do you refer to the user using the application vs. the user being edited? [closed]

    - by Roman Royter
Suppose you are developing an administration page where the administrator can edit other users. In your code you want to distinguish between the user sitting in front of the screen, and the user being edited. What do you call the two? User, CurrentUser, EditedUser, CurrentEditUser, etc? Note that the admin user isn't necessarily real admin, they can be just an ordinary user given rights to edit other users.

Note: Cross posted from Vijay Kodali's Blog. Permalink Here is a quick and dirty trick to alert users on session timeout. This is not a perfect solution. But it will give reader an idea to work on... Some facts before we start: Session doesn't end When the user closes his browser When the user navigates away from your page When user connection lost. • A list of the most important areas to examine when moving a project from x86 to x64?

    - by AbrahamVanHelpsing
I know to check for/use asserts and carefully examine any assembly components, but I didn't know if anyone out there has a fairly comprehensive or industry standard check-list of specific things at which to look? I am looking more at C and C++. note: There are some really helpful answers, I'm just leaving the question open for a couple days in case some folks only check questions that don't have accepted answers.

  • Where can I obtain a first-generation copy of the classic “Sorting out Sorting”?

    - by TML
I cannot even figure out who made it - even the IMDB page is mostly blank, and Wikipedia does not seem to have any information about it. For such a useful film in CompSci, it strikes me as odd that the only meaningful Internet presence I can find are horrible quality copies or excerpts on YouTube. [Note: SO claims this question was migrated to here, but the URL they provide gives a 404, and I can't find it by searching Programmers.SE, so I'm re-asking...]

Following YAML snippet that I'm trying to place in my markdown formatted readme: ``` libraries: - name: numpy version: "1.6.1" ``` Tried the above with both no and 2 trailing spaces at the end of each line. Both turn out on a single line. Obviously I want them on 3 separate lines in my README.md. How? edit: note tried adding 'yaml' as the optional lang parameter but no dice either.

  • How to stop Office 2010 changing " and ' to smart quotes

    - by fatherjack
I have recently upgraded to Office 2010 at work and there are a few things that are a real problem for me. As a T-SQL developer and SQL Server DBA I copy and paste code to and from various applications and if Word gets involved it can has disastrous consequences. There is an option that appears to be defaulted to "on" that changes a straight quote to what Word describes as a smart quote - see the image below. Note - the single quote suffers from the same effect. Now, getting to the point that...(read more)

  • Ubuntu 14.04 and Android, can't see phone on my computer

    - by user3527983
I have installed gMTP and tried to follow this tutorial to solve this problem: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/upgrade-to-gvfs-with-mtp-support-in.html But neither worked. I tried to connect both my phone (Nexus 4) and my dad's phone (Galaxy Note 2), and neither is being detected by Ubuntu. They don't show up on my files and on gMTP. Is there another fix? or something more specific for Android 4.3 and Ubuntu 14.04
