  • SQL Server 2008 R2 transactional replication over VPN

    I'm having difficulty setting up replication over a VPN. I have a SQL Server 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition database on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. SQL Server is running on a non-standard port. I have set it up so that it is acting as its own distributor and have configured a publisher on this server. It is set as an updatable transational publication (yes, this is necessary). On this server, I have Routing and Remote Access enabled in order to be able to establish VPN connections. It is configured with a static IP address pool, of which the first in the range is always assigned to the server. I have assigned a test user a static address within this range (I don't know if this is necessary or not). All clients will be 2008 R2 versions, but could be SQL Express or standalone developer instances of the full product. I can establish a VPN connection from the client without problems and can see that the correct IP addresses are allocated. After connecting to the database to test that I can establish a connection, I realised that I needed to be able to connect to the database using the server name rather than an IP address - required for replication - which wouldn't work initially. I created an entry in the hosts file for the server on the client using the NETBIOS name of the server, and now I can connect to the server, from the client, using the SERVER\INSTANCE, PORT syntax, over the VPN. As it is the default instance on the server, I can also connect with simply SERVER, PORT syntax. After all that, I still get the following dreaded error: SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'SERVER\INSTANCE'. (Replication.Utilities). What have I missed?   • SQL Server instance shuts down

    I'm currently developing a new ASP.NET project hosted on a Windows Server 2008 RC2 with an SQL Server 2008 Express database. I have three SQL Server instances (for different purposes) running which currently all contain a single database. For apparently no reason, these instances tend to shut down after some days. There might be low or no traffic to these instances, because there might be some days in a row, where I can't develop. It now occurred several times, that one or two of these three instances just shut down, so that I can't access the database, without manually starting the instance. I can't seem to find a event log entry for the shutdown, which is most likely because I just enabled logging (why is the default setting off?). So the questions are: * Why does an SQL Server instance shut down? (Is there such a thing as a "Shut down instance after 3 days of inactivity"? * How can I achieve that the instances are running 24/7? Edit: I solved this problem by writing my own application that checks for the status of the SQL Server services. My program will start via a batch file, that gets called by the Windows Task Scheduler every 5 minutes.

    Hi, I have a SQL server 2000 and an Access database mdb connected by Linked server on the other hand I have a program in c # that updates data in a SQL table (Users) based data base access. When running my program returns the following error message: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. Authentication failed. [OLE / DB provider returned message: Can not start the application. Missing information file of the working group or is opened exclusively by another user.] OLE DB error trace [OLE / DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize:: Initialize returned 0x80040E4D: Authentication failed.] . Both the program, the sql server and database access are on a remote server. On the local server the problem was solved by running the following: "sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'ActSC', 'false', NULL, 'admin', NULL". Try on the remote server the next, without result: "sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'ActSC', true, null, 'user', 'pass'". On the remote server and from the "Query Analyzer" sql update statements are working correctly. Can you think of what may be the problem? Thanks!

    OS: Redhat Enterprise Linux Server Release 5.3 (Tikanga) Architecture: Intel Xeon 64Bit MySQL Server 5.5.20 Enterprise Server advanced edition. Application: Liferay. My database size is 200MB. RAM is 64GB. The memory consumption increases gradually and we run out of memory. Then only rebooting releases all the memory, but then process of memory consumption starts again and reaches 63-64GB in less than a day. Parameters detail: key_buffer_size=16M innodb_buffer_pool_size=3GB inndb_buffer_pool_instances=3 max_connections=1000 innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT innodb_change_buffering=inserts read_buffer_size=2M read_rnd_buffer_size=256K It's a serious production server issue that I am facing.     I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and I'm having an issue with Cacti 0.8.8b not displaying any data in graphs. The graphs are being created and I see files in /var/lib/cacti/rra. The device in cacti shows that that it's able to query snmp and ping is alive. The graphs are still empty though. snmpwalk 127.0.0.1 -v2c -c public works as it should. It walks all MIBs. I'm quite perplexed as to why this isn't working any longer. It was graphing data but then it just stopped. And when it was graphing data it was graphing it intermittently.   • Problem During Installation SQL Server 2005 on Windows 7

     Yesterday I was trying to install SQL Server 2005 on windows 7. During installation a popup error dialog shown with this message: The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually. Here is the captured screen: But in books online there was no useful information! After some hours googling, I did not found any useful information and at 3 o'clock of midnight, I was scratching my head! Believe it, I attempted to install SQL Server more than 15 times with different manners (with command prompt & parameters and else). Eventually I found the resource of problem, that was "BitDefender Internet Security 2010"! After uninstalling BitDefender Internet Security, I installed SQL Server 2005 and then reinstalled BitDefender. Just that! Problem resolved. Conclusion: After installing a new version of windows and it's requirements (like IIS and language specifications & else), first install the SQL Server and the Visual Studio and then other applications.Hope be helpful.

  • Windows Azure Database (SQL Azure) Development Tip

    When you create something in the cloud, it's real, and you're charged for it. There are free offerings, and you even get free resources with your Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscription, but there are limits within those. Creating a 1 GB database - even with nothing in it - is a 1 GB Database. If you create it, drop it, and create it again 2 minutes later, that's 2 GB of space you've used for the month. Wait - how do I develop in this kind of situation? With Windows Azure, you can simply install the free Software Development Kit (SDK) and develop your entire application for free - you need never even log in to Windows Azure to code. Once you're done, you simply deploy the app and you start making money from the application as you're paying for it. Windows Azure Databases (The Artist Formerly Known As SQL Azure) is a bit different. It's not emulated in the SDK - because it doesn't have to be. It's just SQL Server, with some differences in feature set. To develop in this environment, you can use SQL Server, any edition. Be aware of the feature differences, of course, but just develop away - even in the free "Express" or LocalDB flavors - and then right-click in SQL Server Management Studio to script objects. Script the database, but change the "Advanced" selection to the Engine Type of "SQL Azure". Bing. Although most all T-SQL ports directly, one thing to keep in mind is that you need a Clustered Index on every table. Often the Primary Key (PK) is a good choice for that.

    Oracle released Agile PLM 9.3 SP2 on June 14 and the Agile installer for AutoVue 20 for Agile PLM on April 30. Also available are the new versions of AUT and Averify - 1.6.3 for both tools. 9.3 SP2 is a combined English and NLS release for use on any version of 9.3.0. SP2 contains many bug fixes and rolls up several Hot Fixes - please review the Readme for all the details. In addition, this release also addresses some scalability issues when working with very large Exports and Reports. When exporting very large BOMs, the export module will now release objects more efficiently to reduce the amount of memory consumed on the Application Server. Adminstrators can also control the maximum row limits for Users verses system processes, like ACS. Several out of the box BOM reports have also been changed to use a new row limit option. The combination of all these changes will provide more stability on the application server for customers managing very large datasets. 9.3 SP2 also adds support for Oracle Database 11gR2 for Windows, Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and Oracle Access Manager (OAM). Please note that currently the Variant Patch is not intended to be released for SP2. Customers running the Variant Patch should remain on 9.3.0.0 or 9.3.0.1.   • SQL Server 2008 Web VS SQL Server 2008 Enterprise

    I wrote an application a few months ago, and was hosting it out of our offices on a workstation with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33GHz, 8 GB RAM, Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and SQL Server 2008 Enterprise. Both the webserver and database server were run on the same machine. We had a huge influx in traffic, and moved ClubUptime.com, and got 2 of their top teir windows VMs. The Database server runs Windows 2008 R2 Standard and SQL Server 2008 R2 Web on 8 GB ram and an Intel Xeon e5620 @ 2.40GHz. Ever since switching, the database which used to run at around 400MB in RAM now runs at around 4-7GB, and there haven't been any changes to it (other than a couple columns here and there). Our traffic has quadrupled, and our DB is 6 GB on disk, why would SQL server take up 7 GB if the DB is only 6. And why would it be storing the ENTIRE database in memory? Another thing is why growing 4 times in size did the database's memory footprint grow 12 times? Last question: Why does the CPU peg at 100% now where it didn't before? The design is simple, VERY few joins, NO subqueries. I am just at a loss, unless it is the SQL server edition, or the fact that I moved from real hardware to a VM.

I could run Management Studio, but it couldn’t connect at all. No error, it just seemed to hang. One of the things you have to do to get Virtual Server installed is to tweak the Group Policy settings. I’d used gpupdate /force to get Windows to pick up the new setting, which allowed me to get Virtual Server running properly, but at the time, SQL was still using the previous settings. Finally when in Brisbane, my machine picked up the new settings, and caused me pain. Dan Benediktson describes the situation. If the SQL client picks up the wrong value out of the GetOverlappedResult API (which is required for various changes in Windows 7 behaviour), then Virtual Server can be installed, but SQL Server won’t allow connections. Yay. Luckily, it’s easy enough to change back using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc). Then restarting the machine (again!, as gpupdate /force didn’t cut it either, because SQL had already picked up the value), and finally I could reconnect. On Thursday I simply borrowed another machine for my talk. Today, one of my guys had seen and remembered Dan’s post. Thanks, both of you.

  • Connecting remotely to an SQL server inside a LAN

    Hello everyone, I am using SQL server 2008 inside my home lan. I've configured it to accept remote connections and I can now connect to the server from other pcs inside the lan. The problems rises when I try connecting to the server from a computer outside of my home lan. I've disabled my router's firewall and I've configured a virtual server on port 1433 forwarding to the correct lan ip. What's wrong? why is it not working? Thank you very much for your help~! Edit: This is the error I keep getting: A network related or instance specific error occured while establishing connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that the SQL SERVER is configued to allow remote connections. (provider : Sql network interfaces, error: 25- Connection string is not valid) OK these are my router's details: edimax br-6204wg I am not sure how I am supposed to browse google.com. can you be a bit more specific?

  • iscsitarget suddenly broken after upgrade of the 12.04 Hardware Stack

    After an upgrade to the latest Hardware Stack using Ubuntu 12.04, my iscsi service is not longer operational. The error from the service is such: FATAL: Module iscsi_trgt not found. I have learned that I might need to reinstall the package iscsitarget-dkms. this package builds a driver or something during installation, from source. During this build process, it reports and error, and now has also broke my package manager.   • SQL Server performance on VSphere 4.0

    We are having a performance issue that we cannot explain with our VMWare environment and I am hoping someone here may be able to help. We have a web application that uses a databases backend. We have an SQL 2005 Cluster setup on Windows 2003 R2 between a physical node and a virtual node. Both physical servers are identical 2950's with 2x Xeaon x5460 Quad Core CPUs and 64GB of memory, 16GB allocated to the OS. We are utilizing an iSCSI San for all cluster disks. The problem is this, when utilizing the application under a repeated stress testing that adds CPUs to the cluster nodes, the Physical node scales from 1 pCPU to 8 pCPUs, meaning we see continued performance increases. When testing the node running Vsphere, we have the expected 12% performance hit for being virtual but we still scale from 1 vCPU to 4 vCPUs like the physical but beyond this performance drops off, by the time we get to 8 vCPUs we are seeing performance numbers worse than at 4 vCPUs. Again, both nodes are configured identically in terms of hardware, Guest OS, SQL Configurations etc and there is no traffic other than the testing on the system. There are no other VMs on the virtual server so there should be no competition for resources. We have contacted VMWare for help but they have not really been any suggesting things like setting SQL Processor Affinity which, while being helpful would have the same net effect on each box and should not change our results in the least. We have looked at all of VMWare's SQL Tuning guides with regards to VSphere with no benefit, please help!

    We're currently have one way transaction replication from a SQL Server 2005 OLTP publisher/distrbituor to two subscribers (one SQL 2005 and the other SQL2008 R2). Replication security is via the SQL Agents' domain service account (the same account is used on all boxes). The SQL2008R2 subscriber is used for BI purposes and hosts a database that has a subset of the Production publisher database tables, with different security and indexes. We need to migrate this BI subscriber to a newer box with more performant hardware. The plan is as follows: Stop replicating to the BI box (continue replicating to the other subscriber). Backup all databases on the BI box (including system databases). Restore all databases (including master in single user mode) to the new BI box (this has SQL Server 2008R2 already installed). Take the old BI box off the network and shut it down. Rename and Re-IP the new BI box to be the same as the old box. Switch replication back on. Are there any flaws in this approach?

  • sql server 2005 instance unresponsive and all db's are 'in recovery'

    we've got a sql server 2005 instance that one of our guys messed up, i believe they killed the sql server service and restarted the computer, and when it came back all of our databases are "in recovery" and it times out every time we try to connect to it. it's been 'in recovery'and unable to connect to 'msbd' (also in recovery) whenever we try to use SSMC, for the last 4 days now. i'm unsure how to use the DBCC CHECKDB command to check the db integrity. we have backups(which we can't recover from because it keeps timing out), and it's a testing server, so nothing in production is really lost. is there any way to get it out of recovery mode? we have another sqlserver instance running that's just fine, but this instance keeps timing out. the errors i keep seeing are database msdb is being recovered. wait until recovery is finished and an exception occurred while executing a transact-sql statement or batch Timeout expired. any thoughts? we don't really have a DBA here, or anyone with much sql experience.

    I have an MS SQL function that is called with the following syntax: SELECT Field1, COUNT(*) AS RecordCount FROM GetDecileTable('WHERE ClientID = 7 AND LocationName = ''Default'' ', 10) The first parameter passes a specific WHERE clause that is used by the function for one of the internal queries. When I call this function in the front-end C# page, I need to send parameter values for the individual fields inside of the WHERE clause (in this example, both the ClientID & LocationName fields) The current C# code looks like this: String SQLText = "SELECT Field1, COUNT(*) AS RecordCount FROM GetDecileTable('WHERE ClientID = @ClientID AND LocationName = @LocationName ',10)"; SqlCommand Cmd = new SqlCommand(SQLText, SqlConnection); Cmd.Parameters.Add("@ClientID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = 7; // Insert real ClientID Cmd.Parameters.Add("@LocationName", SqlDbType.NVarChar(20)).Value = "Default"; // Real code uses Location Name from user input SqlDataReader reader = Cmd.ExecuteReader(); When I do this, I get the following code from SQL profiler: exec sp_executesql N'SELECT Field1, COUNT(*) as RecordCount FROM GetDecileTable (''WHERE ClientID = @ClientID AND LocationName = @LocationName '',10)', N'@ClientID int,@LocationID nvarchar(20)', @ClientID=7,@LocationName=N'Default' When this executes, SQL throws an error that it cannot parse past the first mention of @ClientID stating that the Scalar Variable @ClientID must be defined. If I modify the code to declare the variables first (see below), then I receive an error at the second mention of @ClientID that the variable already exists. exec sp_executesql N'DECLARE @ClientID int; DECLARE @LocationName nvarchar(20); SELECT Field1, COUNT(*) as RecordCount FROM GetDecileTable (''WHERE ClientID = @ClientID AND LocationName = @LocationName '',10)', N'@ClientID int,@LocationName nvarchar(20)', @ClientID=7,@LocationName=N'Default' I know that this method of adding parameters and calling SQL code from C# works well when I am selecting data from tables, but I am not sure how to embed parameters inside of the ' quote marks for the embedded WHERE clause being passed to the function. Any ideas?

  • "Order By" in LINQ-to-SQL Causes performance issues

    I've set out to write a method in my C# application which can return an ordered subset of names from a table containing about 2000 names starting at the 100th name and returning the next 20 names. I'm doing this so I can populate a WPF DataGrid in my UI and do some custom paging. I've been using LINQ to SQL but hit a snag with this long executing query so I'm examining the SQL the LINQ query is using (Query B below). Query A runs well: SELECT TOP (20) [t0].[subject_id] AS [Subject_id], [t0].[session_id] AS [Session_id], [t0].[name] AS [Name] FROM [Subjects] AS [t0] WHERE (NOT (EXISTS( SELECT NULL AS [EMPTY] FROM ( SELECT TOP (100) [t1].[subject_id] FROM [Subjects] AS [t1] WHERE [t1].[session_id] = 1 ORDER BY [t1].[name] ) AS [t2] WHERE [t0].[subject_id] = [t2].[subject_id] ))) AND ([t0].[session_id] = 1) Query B takes 40 seconds: SELECT TOP (20) [t0].[subject_id] AS [Subject_id], [t0].[session_id] AS [Session_id], [t0].[name] AS [Name] FROM [Subjects] AS [t0] WHERE (NOT (EXISTS( SELECT NULL AS [EMPTY] FROM ( SELECT TOP (100) [t1].[subject_id] FROM [Subjects] AS [t1] WHERE [t1].[session_id] = 1 ORDER BY [t1].[name] ) AS [t2] WHERE [t0].[subject_id] = [t2].[subject_id] ))) AND ([t0].[session_id] = 1) ORDER BY [t0].[name] When I add the ORDER BY [t0].[name] to the outer query it slows down the query. How can I improve the second query?   • Patterns & Practices: Composite Services CTP2 is Public

    Finally the last CTP and pre-release version for the Composite Services is out. There were quite a lot of changes since CTP1. We added many new samples and many enhancements to the repository (DB) which is now called Inventory in sync with SOA Patterns. Here is a brief list of the main changes according to the included documentations.   Changes and additions in this release This CTP release contains reusable source code and samples to illustrate implementation for the following patterns and scenarios: Repair and Resubmit – this pattern is implemented in ESB Toolkit 2.0 as part of Exception Management Framework (EMF). This code drop provides code sample how to implement this pattern for Windows AppFabric workflow service, using Exceptions Web Service and workflow activities to create fault message, which will be created in EMF database.  Analytic Tracing – this code drop contains reusable code and samples for implementing ETW tracing: event collector service and database that store collected events. This capability may be used for scenarios that need flexibility on how collected events are decoded and processed via extensibility points you can configure and implement:  plugins and event decoders with leveraging ETW tracing capabilities provided by the event collector service.   Inventory Centralization – this code drop contains service catalog database, web services and samples to show how to implement Metadata Centralization, Schema Centralization and Policy Centralization patterns.  Service Virtualization – we included sample for implementing this pattern using WCF routing service( which is part of .NET framework) and service metadata centralization capabilities to define routing service metadata in service catalog. Termination Notification – we included sample for implementing this pattern using sample WCF service and policy centralization capabilities provided by this CTP release.   You will also find many new videos that will be uploaded to the home page any time soon.     Hi, I have a fairly basic SQL Server Reporting Services report that is using nested row groups. Each sub-group depends on expanding its parent to be visible which is all pretty standard. The layout is something like this: { Company { { Car SUM(Price) { { { Part Price My desired result when expanded is something like this (which I get fine): - SuperCarCompany - SuperCar 20 Door 20 - SuperCar2 70 Door 30 Window 40 - OtherCarCompany - SuperCar2 50 /* Same SuperCar2 */ Door 50 - MoreCarCompany - BestCarEver 535 Engine 500 Door 30 Window 5 And when opened initially something like this: + SuperCarCompany + OtherCarCompany + MoreCarCompany However, I'm getting this: + SuperCarCompany + SuperCar2 70 (i.e. sum of all SuperCar2) + OtherCarCompany + SuperCar 20 + MoreCarCompany + BestCarEver 535 and I can even expand these superfluous rows like this: + SuperCarCompany - SuperCar2 70 (i.e. sum of all SuperCar2) Door 30 (i.e. first child of any SuperCar2) The superflous rows dissapear immediately when I expand the expected row above it (i.e. I'd need to expand all expected rows to get rid of all superflous rows). Any idea on the cause?
