  • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

    Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released.     Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized. Are there any standard software tools to do this?   • What Would You Consider Best Practice Workflow Tools For Web Application (PHP) Development?

    I'm really hoping somebody with more experience can edit the question as per my examples of answers: • using version control • test driven development • debugging code (xdebug for php) • use of UML diagrams • use of OOP for maintainable, reusable code • use of frameworks (like Zend Framework for php) for rapid application development Anything else or an elaboration of what I mentioned above? Basically, I'm in the middle of forming a team of developers (I'm a developer myself) and I'd like some advice on how professional programmers/designers etc should work together and what standards/paradigms they should use. Also, if anybody has any books or links on the subject I'd welcome that!   • What tools and knowledge do I need to create an application which generates bespoke automated e-mails? [on hold]

    I'd like some suggestions as to how to best go about creating an application which can generate bespoke automated e-mails- i.e. send a personalized reply to a particular individual, interpreting the context of the message as intelligently as possible... (This is perhaps too big a question to be under one title?) What would be a good starting point? What concepts do I need to know? I'd imagine that the program needs to be able trawl through e-mails as and when they come in, and search for keywords in e-mail content, in order to write an appropriate reply. So there needs to be some form of automated response embedded in the code. Machine learning and databases come to mind here, as I'm aware that google incorporates machine learning already in gmail etc. It is quite tricky to google the above topic, and find the perfect tutorial. But there are some interesting articles and papers out there: Machine Learning in Automated Text Categorization (2002) by Fabrizio Sebastiani , Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche However, this is not exactly a quick start guide. I intend to add to this question, and no doubt other questions will spark off this one. I look forward to suggestions.

  • How do I temporarily reference a new web host using my existing domain name?

    On provider A I have an existing web hosting account running my site. On provider B I have my domain name registered pointing to the web hosting on provider A. I've just purchased a web hosting account with provider B and want to move my site there. Is there a way to temporarily use my domain name to point to provider B while I set up the site (e.g. just from my computer)? I tried to change the HOSTS file (Windows) and while pings resolved to what I set, HTTP requests don't.

  • Running my web site in a 32-bit application pool on a 64-bit OS.

    Here is my setup: Dev: - Windows Server 2008 64-bit - Visual Studio 2008 - Solution with 3 class libraries, 1 web application Staging Web Server: - Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit - IIS7.5 Integrated Application Pool with 32-bit Applications Enabled In Visual Studio I have set all 4 of my projects to compile to 'Any CPU' but when I run this web application on the web server with the 32-bit application pool it times out and crashes. When I run the application pool in 64-bit mode it works fine. The production web server requires me to run 32-bit application pool in 64-bit OS which is why I have this configured in this way on the staging web server. (I considered posting on ServerFault but the server part seems to be working fine. It is my code specifically that doesn't seem to want to run in 32-bit application pool which is why I am posting here.)

  • Web hosting announced downtime and how it affects FORWARD domain names?

    Our web hosting provider that holds our FORWARD domain names announced that at some point in the next couple weeks they will be migrating servers and that this will cause a 5-10 minute downtime at some point in that week during what happens to be our core business hours. They cite for technical reasons it is impossible to give an exact date or time when this downtime will occur. My questions are: If my domains are set to FORWARD to a static IP on servers not hosted by the web hosting provider in question then will this affect the DNS servers correctly routing to my website? Are their legitimate technical reasons for such a wide window of time, or could this just be a blanket statement to cover laziness in not being more organized with their server migrations? Are such downtimes normal for web hosting providers, or should I start to consider other providers?

  • How to redirect keeping the referral without server-side redirects?

    I have an HTML page hosted in Dropbox that some external websites link to. I want to redirect to a different page using only HTML or Javascript, since I can't use any server-side redirects. My goal is to be able to keep the original referral information for analytics. I've tried different ways but they all end up showing up with no referral. So if a blog that I have no control over (B) links to my public static page on Dropbox (D), and I want a redirect to the new page hosted elsewhere (N), I would like for the analytics for N to be shown as B, not D. Is that even possible?

  • Browser support for internal corporate tools

    We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?

    Hello, I need to find a very compact, cross-platform web server that can run Lua scripts, ie. either a regular web server like Mongoose that will forward queries to a Lua program in eg. FastCGI, or a web server itself written in Lua which will save the need to provide a separate web server. I recently started learning about Lua so am still in the dark about what is available out there, save for the three I came accross: Barracuda Embedded Web Server http://barracudaserver.com/ba/doc/ Xavante - Lua HTTP 1.1 Web server http://keplerproject.github.com/xavante/ Haserl http://haserl.sourceforge.net/ If someone's already done this recently, what solution would you recommend along with any tutorial/article that would get me started?     I already use Google Analytics on my page, but I'd like to get additional info from log files. I've looked at various packages during last days, but nothing impressed me so far. Some requirements: must work on log file level (I use apache combined logs, but can configure apache to produce other types of logs) can generate static reports (windows/linux) or use GUI (windows only) should be easy to add custom user agents, and rerun analysis if it can recognize installation of eclipse plugins from log, that would be big plus understands google serp position referer should not require two days to setup (awstats, I am looking at you) should be still under active developement (i.e. analog isn't good answer) preferrably free, or at not very expensive :-) Any good analyzers programs out there?

    After some digging here, I took the advice in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/371961/how-to-unit-test-c-web-service-with-visual-studio-2008 I've created a separate class and my web service class is just a wrapper for that one. The problem is that when I try to create a unit test project in VS2008, it insists on creating a unit test that acts like I'm testing the web service calls instead of the class I specified. I can't get to the class I'm trying to test. I have a web service "subscription_api.asmx". The code behind is "subscription_api.cs" which contains the web method wrapper calls to the real code at "subscription.cs". I would expect to be able to do the following: [TestMethod()] public void GetSystemStatusTest() { subscription sub = new subscription(); XmlNode node = sub.GetSystemStatusTest(); Assert.IsNotNull(node); } But instead I get this mess which is autogenerated from VS'08: /// <summary> ///A test for GetSystemStatus ///</summary> // TODO: Ensure that the UrlToTest attribute specifies a URL to an ASP.NET page (for example, // http://.../Default.aspx). This is necessary for the unit test to be executed on the web server, // whether you are testing a page, web service, or a WCF service.     Hello, I am saving the image at this location :- private static String photoGalleryPath = "/Common/PhotoGallery/"; In PhotoGallery. I create userid wise folders and save images. Everything works fine. But when i clean and build my project. The whole folder of PhotoGallery gets deleted. This looks very funny to me :). Why does it delete my whole folder everytime? And what more should i do to tell the extra smart Glassfish to not to delete my folders?
