Having used ack for some time now, I find it much better for my development purposes than grep. But then I've heard about rak and grin. Has anyone used all three of them and can provide a comparison?
Does anyone know of a Windows Server 2008 role(s) to allow readonly access to MMC (MS Management Console) facilities - i.e. we would like to be able to view (not add/update/delete) "Administrative Tools" functionality such as IIS websites, Event log, Users and groups, status of services, etc. This is so we can connect to a say a Development server (administered by another team) to check configuration before/during deployment via say Administive Tools | Computer Management | Connect to another computer
Many thanks
Travis
I see a bunch of junk files in the root folder of my hard drive running Snow Leopard. Here is a screen shot of the files:
If I inspect these files, they appear to contain XML with DeviceCertificate, DevicePublicKey, and SystemBUID information, among other XML elements.
I do iOS development on this machine. Can anyone explain from where these files came, and if they are an indication of anything serious, such as malware or spyware?
Hello everyone,
I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows.
I am wondering what is the HOME key (goes to the begin position of a line in text file) and END key (goes to the end position of a line in text file) on the Mac? My MacBook Pro seems to not have these two keys on the keyboard.
thanks in advance,
George
I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows.
For the software I installed, how to uninstall them? I did not find something like Add/Remove program of Windows Control Panel.
Thanks in advance!
I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows.
I am wondering what is the backspace key of Mac (i.e. which is used to delete the character previous to current cursor position in text editor)? Windows keyboard has a dedicated backspace key, but I did not find such a key on my MacBook Pro keyboard.
Thanks in advance.
I have been looking into sites of IT companies but I am confused with the terms they use for their offerings. Some write: "Software Services, IT Consulting", some write: "Technology, Consulting", some write" "Product engineering, Application Development".
Can someone clarify what is the difference between:
(1) Software services & IT Consulting.
(2) Technology and Consulting.
I have a local share with my vmware development server and I'm finding that when I create new files via osx, they are created under root instead of jacob.
Which is weird because when I do the connect to server thing I'm explicit about the user being jacob i.e.

Suggestions?
I have just installed Ubuntu on a machine that previously had XP installed on it. The machine has 2 HDD (hard disk drives). I opted to install Ubuntu completely over XP.
I am new to Linux, and I am still learning how to navigate teh file structure. However, AFAICT), there is only one drive. I want to be able to store programs etc on the first drive, and store data (program output etc) on the second drive.
It appears Ubuntu is not aware that I have 2 drives (on XP, these were drives C and D).
How can I mount the second drive (ideally, I want to do this automatically on login, so that the drive is available to me whenever I login - withou manual intervention from me)
In XP, I could refer to files on a specific drive by prefixing with the drive letter (e.g. c:\foobar.cpp and d:\foobar.dat). I suspect the notation on ubuntu is different. How may I specify specific files on different drives?
Last but notbthe least (a bit unrelated to previous questions). This relates to direcory structure again. I am a developer (C++ for desktops and PHP for websites), I want to install the following apps/ libraries.
i). Apache 2.2
ii). PHP 5.2.11
iii). MySQL (5.1)
iv). SVN
v). Netbeans
vi). C++ development tools (gcc, gdb, emacs etc)
vii). QT toolkit
viii). Some miscellaeous scientific software (e.g. www.r-project.org, www.gnu.org/software/octave/)
I would be grateful if a someone can recommend a directory layout for these applications. Regarding development, I would also be grateful if someone could point out where to store my project and source files i.e:
(i) *.cpp, *.hpp, *.mak files for cpp projects
(ii) individual websites
On my XP machine the layout for C++ dev was like this:
c:\dev\devtools (common libs and headers etc)
c:\dev\workarea (root folder for projects)
c:\dev\workarea\c++ (c++ projects)
c:\dev\workarea\websites (web projects)
I would like to create a similar folder structure on the linux machine, but its not clear whether to place these folders under /, /usr, /home or swomewhere else (there seems to be abffling number of choices, so I want to get it "right" first time - i.e having a directory structure that most developer use, so it is easier when communicating with other ubuntu/linux developers)
Hello.
Windows 7 Home Premium has local users and groups mmc console snap-in disabled:
Is there any custom utility I can use to manage my accounts? I need no more than adding users and email addresses to have some test accounts for my development purposes.
I don't want to use regular "user accounts" tool in control panel to add users because:
I don't want them at my welcome screen
I can't assign mail address to them
Hi,
I have tried running windows xp development virtual machine under windows 7 and the performance was dreadful.
I'm considering installing Linux and running the virtual machine from the Linux, but I'm not sure whether I can expect any performance gains?
It's a 2.4ghz core 2 duo machine with 4gb ram and 5400 rpm hdd.
Can somebody please recommend very cut down version of linux that can run VMWare player and isn't resource hungry?
Thank you
I'm trying to set up a git server for our development team, and there's a requirement that it run on a Windows machine. I have the base git/sshd setup working with gitolite, but I'm pretty new to IIS management, so I'm not sure how to proceed.
Can anyone recommend a user-friendly (I'm new to website development) and inexpensive web host (my websites are simple and small, so no need for a beef-eating server) that will allow me write access to the file system from PHP? My current web host won't allow me to write to the file system, and keeping everything in the database is slow, and a pain.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop, need to upgrade to Windows 8.
If there were a Windows 8 Home Premium midway between those two I would've chosen that... but there are only two Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, so I'm a bit confused, as I don't want the former to be like Windows 7 Basic. My usage is mostly coding, game development, mid-performance gaming and some benchmarking and video editing.
Your recommendations please?
So, my windows laptop is on its last legs and I'm thinking of shelling out for a Macbook Pro. However, I do some (but not a lot) of ASP.NET development, and so would need to install Visual Studio of some version using something like VMWare Fusion.
Has anyone had any success doing this? I know that the sensible thing to do would be to take the money that I'd spend on a MBP and get a decent laptop, but since when is sensible fun?
we have a development AIX 5.3 on PowerPC CPU having the standard CC compiler. I downloaded the gcc 4.2.4, unpacked it and tried to install
it seems there is something missing; untar takes around 15 minutes and ends with an error trying to create a directory starting with @ sign.
and in the gcc folder itself, I can't find a configure or a Makefile to install
any hint on how to do so?
Is there a timeline for Gnome 3 development? When do we get hands on the first beta builds?
The only thing I know is that Gnome 3 is planned in place of Gnome 2.30. Last Gnome release was 2.26 in March 2009. Sticking to 6 month releases, 2.30 should arrive at March 2011. Is there some other date?
I'm currently running my jsp pages on a windows 2003 server, apache tomcat 5.5 setup. My process involved is as follows:
make change to .java file
compile .java file
restart apache tomcat service
refresh browser
check c:\program files\apache software foundation\tomcat 5.5\logs
This is beyond cumbersome. Is there a better development platform to develop jsp pages which makes life alot easier?
thanks in advance

Does anyone know if a VMware Fusion virtual machine of Windows 7 would run better on a class 6 SDHC card than it does sharing the disk with Mac OS? Or if a single SSD drive would do better? I like to live in the Mac world for day-to-day things, but I also have a complete development environment set up in Windows 7.
Development of the free application Putty Connection Manager that can display more than one Putty sessions stopped in 2009, and it sometimes triggers this error when I double-click on any host in the right hand-side list:
PuTTY Connection Manager/An unexpected error occured :
Object reference not set to an instance of an object..
When that happens, I have to reboot :-/
Does someone know of an alternative?
Thank you.
In my WinXP I write a bat file to start the putty which is connected to my linux for development.
D:\PuTTY-v0.60\putty.exe [email protected] -pw 123456
But I have to set the charset to utf-8 manually everytime when I do the login.I think it's quite a waste of time.So how can I do the setting more quickly? Thanks.
I have a couple of development Virtual PC images; now I installed Windows Server 2008 + Hyper-V on my main dev laptop and need to migrate those images to Hyper-V. Google only brings steps for some older version of Hyper-V - I dont even see the wizard steps they are talking about.
Any help would be highly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm new to web development and I'm trying to set up a local server using WAMP.
My problem is when I try to access localhost or localhost/index.php I get a 403 error. I can access http://localhost/myphpadmin so I think this is a permissions issue but I have full access (or so I think) over the folder.
Thanks
