    Recently when you search for me on Google several URLs from my blog have started showing up, instead of just the main URL. 1) https://scotthelme.co.uk/ 2) https://scotthelme.co.uk/category/wifi-pineapple-2/? 3) https://scotthelme.co.uk/wifi-pineapple-karma-sslstrip/ Is there a reason this starts happening? I have contemplated doing something to remove them but is it better to occupy the top 3 spots instead of just the top spot? Should I just leave them there?

    I used the data highlighter in webmaster tools over 3 weeks ago to mark up some local business data, but there is still no structured data being detected in webmaster tools. Does any body have any experience on approx how long it takes for Google Webmaster Tools to start reporting Structured Data that has been marked up with their data highlighter? I'm asking specifically about reporting on it in Web Master Tools Structured Data section, as opposed to actually appearing in the SERPs.

  • Turn Chrome’s New Tab Page into an Ubuntu Forums Powerhouse

    There’s a lot of start page plug-ins for Google Chrome, but if you’re an Ubuntu Forums enthusiast, you might be interested in the powerful UbuntuForums.org Start Page extension. Using the Ubuntu Forums Chrome Start Page Once you’ve installed the extension and opened a new tab, you’ll notice quite a difference from the boring default “New Tab Page”. While you may look at this and wonder if what you see is all that there is to it, there’s actually a lot of hidden customization and functionality. The upper left corner is where you will control the content displayed in the “Ubuntu New Tab Page”. The “Buttons Toolbar” that you see at the top lets you shift between the types of content viewed, from RSS feeds to bookmarks and more. This entire set of links provides direct links to the appropriate section in the Ubuntu Forums. As with the set of links pictured above each of these will open in a new tab when clicked on. There’s even a feature to browse wallpapers from DesktopNexus with categories on the left and pictures to the right.   • Move old website with bad SEO to other domain: redirect or start from scratch?

    I have an old website with very bad SEO and PR, but still with some visitors per-day. Lately I've rebuilt the app and the concept of it and I'm going to deploy everything in a new domain. I would like to not lose those old visitors but I'm wondering if redirecting that old website to my new one is going to damage the SEO in the new website. Don't know also if it deserves to make the move in the Google Webmaster Tools and Bing or better start from scratch.

  • Connecting Adium to Google Talk with a 2-factor authentication account isn’t working

    Anyone else having this problem? After turning on 2-factor authentication on my Google Account I stopped being able to log in through Adium (Mac IM client that uses Pidgin’s libpurple for IM). Obviously you need to generate an application-specific password but these won’t let me log in. Application specific passwords work with other applications (e.g. Reeder for feeds and calendering on my phone). Google specifically mention Adium in their examples of setting up an application password for Google Talk so I doubt it’s a generic Adium problem. I can still access Google Talk for this account if I use a talk widget on a Google Website (Plus, or iGoogle for example). My bug report to Adium including a connection log file is up on their Trac: http://trac.adium.im/ticket/15310 . No activity there though. I also asked around in their IRC channel but no-one else could replicate the problem. If I had to guess then I’d think it was a consequence of me not having a GMail account associated with my Google account. I don’t see exactly why that would cause it, but it seems like a fairly unusual setup that might not have been tested for.

  • Google Chrome does not launch after some months without using it in Windows XP/Seven

    Well, I have in computers I use with Windows XP or Seven more than one browser installed on them, generally Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 4, Opera 11 and Google Chrome. I often use Firefox, but I want to use Google Chrome sometimes because I have a lot of addons and webapps on it. The issue is: when I try to execute Chrome after some months without using it, it does not function. Using Proccess Explorer or Task Manager, I can see that there is not any Google proccesses running. Then I reinstall it and all functions. But if I do not use it for some months again, it will not function... Is it an update problem? Must I use Chrome everyday or is there another way to avoid that issue? PS: I installed English and Portuguese last versions (how to get the version numbers when it does not execute?), not at the same time, and it continues to do not launch... PS2: There is a running Google Update proccess that is launched in startup: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run    Name:            Google Update    Type:            REG_SZ    Data:            "C:\Users\Ubirajara\AppData\Local\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c

  • Understanding Authorized Access to your Google Account

    I'm having trouble understanding what I'm am granting to sites when they have "Authorized Access to my Google Account." This is how I see what has authorized access: Log into gmail. Click on the link that is my name in the upper-right corner, and from the drop-down select Account. From the list of links to the left, select Security. Click on Edit next to Authorized applications and sites. Authenticate again. At the top of the page, I see a set of sites that have authorized access to my account in various ways. I'm having trouble finding out information about what is being told to me here. There's no "help" link anywhere on the page and my Google searches are coming up unproductive. From the looks of what I see there, Google has access to my Google calendar. I feel comfortable about that, I think. But other sites have authorization to "Sign in using your Google account". My question is, what exactly does that authorization mean? What do the sites that have authorization to "Sign in using my Google account" have the power to do? I hope that this simply means that they authorize using the same criterion that gmail does. I assume that this doesn't grant them the ability to access my email. Can someone please calm my paranoia by describing (or simply pointing me to a site that describes) what these terms mean exactly? Also, if you have any thoughts about the safety of this feature, please share. Thanks!

  • Google Apps routing to different servers, depending on domain

    We are investigating Google Apps for Education for our group of schools. Currently, each school uses their own Exchange (2003) server. Each school has its own domain which I have added to Google Apps as additional domains. I would like to start transitioning certain staff and some new pupils over to Google Apps to start testing. In this interim phase, I need mail to be routed through Google Apps and then, if no appropriate mail box is found, route on to the individual schools depending on the recipient. I do know that it is possible to route mail that does not have an appropriate Google Apps mail account to a single server - under "Settings / E-mail Settings / General Settings / Routing / E-mail routing". This works well for a single organisation where all the extra mail is destined for one place. I do know that it is possible to set up Routes, under "Settings / E-mail Settings / Hosts" and then use rules, found under "Settigns / E-mail Settings / General Settings / Routing / Receiving Routing". I can then filter based on e-mail domain and forward on to the necessary server. My problem with this, as I understand it, is that it ignores the users that have Google Apps accounts set up and sends all mail to the Exchange server. Are there any solutions for this predicament?   • Picking Core Language For Large Scale Web Platform

    Now I have work with PHP and ASP.NET quite a bit and also played around few other language for web development. I am now at a point where need to start building a backend platform that will have the ability to support a large set of applications and I am trying to figure out which language I want to choose as my core language. When I say core language I mean the language that the majority of the backend code is going to be in. This is not to say that other languages won't be used because my guess is that they will but I want a large majority of the code (90%-98%) to be in 1 language. While I see to benefit of using the language that is best for the job, having 15% in php, 15% in ASP.NET, 5% in perl, 10% in python, 15% in ruby, etc… seems like a very bad idea to me (not to mention integrating everything seamlessly would probably add a bit of overhead). If you were going to be building a large scale web platform that need to support multiple applications from scratch, what would you choose as your core language and why?

  • win32 API vs Linux Kernel API

    Is there anything that can be done using Win32 API that cannot be done using Linux kernel API. I'm asking this, because back in Lab where I work we use Ixia and Agilent Technologies H/W. and these H/W (Signal processes or Packet generator) worth 10s of thousand of Dollars run windows as their OS. Why didn't they choose Linux. I've seen Linux in routers and firewall but not in real Heavy duty H/W like Ixia. This preference of windows over Linux made me think is there any limitation in Linux API or its just licensing thing.

  • GoogleMaps API v3 - Need help with two "click" event scenarios. Need similar functionality to v2 AP

    In version 2 of the API the map click event returned an Overlay, LatLng, Overlaylatlng. I used this to create a generic map event that would either retrieve the coordinates of the Map click event, or return the coordinates of a Marker or other type of Overlay. Now that API v3 doesn't return the Overlay or Overlaylatlng during the map click event, how can I go about creating a generic "click" event for the map that works if the user clicks on a marker or overlay? I really don't want to create a click event for each marker I have on my page as I am creating anywhere from a handful to a couple thousand markers. Also, I had to create a custom ImageMapType in order to display the StreetViewOverlay like we could do in v2 of the API because I couldn't find anywhere that told me how to add the StreetViewOverlay without the pegman icon. How can I go about retrieving the LatLng coordinates of a click on this overlay type as well?

  • Web-based SVG or JavaScript Org Chart or Tree Graph Plotting Visualization API

    Hi, I'm looking to build an interactive web-based org chart for a large organization. I somewhat like the interface at ancestry.com where you can hover over people and pan/zoom around and click on different nodes to make them the root. Ideally, I'd like it if people could belong to multiple organizational entities like committees, working groups, etc. In other words the API should support graphs in general, not just trees. I'd like to be able to visually explode each organizational substructure into substituents by clicking on it, with a nice animation of the employees ballooning or spilling out so you can really interactively drill down through the organization. I found http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/orgchart.html but it looks a bit rudimentary. I know there are desktop tools like OrgPlus and Visio that can build static charts but I'm really looking for a free, web-based API with open standards-based output like SVG or HTML5 Canvas elements rather than Flash or some proprietary output. Something I can embed into a custom web application and style myself. Something interactive.
