    I'm planning on developing an Apple Mac application which will collect hardware information from the host Mac and also installed software info. The hardware and software info will be collected in an encrypted XML file and then posted back to a website. The application should run as a "service" or background process on the Mac and can be configured to collect the data on a frequent basis defined by another encrypted XML config file. I've done plenty of Windows based software development but never on the Mac. Can anybody point me in the direction of any useful info on how to develop on the Mac, collect hardware and software info, export to an XML file, file encryption and packaging a compiled app to run as a service? Is either Objective C, Cocoa or Ruby a possible option? Many thanks for your help in advance!

  • Can't install SQL Express 2008R2- caspol.exe application error - the application failed to initialize

    I'm trying to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2 on Windows 2003 Server (enterprise edition). I get the following error message: Title: caspol.exe - Application Error Text: The application failed to initialize properly (0x000007b), Click on OK to terminate the application. I get the same error message both when downloading the installer and running it and when using the web platform installer. All the pages on the internet I've found about similar problem say it's a corrupt .net installation issue - This server runs multiple .net apps and I've never had any problems with any of them. I've uninstalled and reinstalled .net (causing a painful outage) and nothing changed. Does anyone here has any idea what might cause this? Update 1: additional information I forgot to include: 32bit version of Windows running in a virtual machine, no anti virus Update 2: when running caspol.exe from the command line I get the same error

  • sqlsrv not showing up in my phpinfo

    I have just installed php 5.3 on windows server 2008 R2 running IIS7. phpinfo() is working fine. now I want to see if I have correctly installed the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server. I downloaded from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=80E44913-24B4-4113-8807-CAAE6CF2CA05#RelatedResources I have dropped the 2 dlls (php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll) into the PHP\ext folder and referenced them in the php.ini I restarted the server. But when I run phpinfo() I'm not seeing any reference to sqlsrv is that normal? or should there also be a section of phpinfo() dedicated to these sqlsrv extensions? Error logging is on but there are no errors coming up in the php-errors.log referring to sqlsrv. Both files php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll have been added (non thread safe version for IIS), php5.dll is present in the php install folder. Thanks for any pointers.

  • Why might login failures cause SQL 2005 to dump and ditch?

    Our SQL 2005 server began timing out and finally stopped responding on Oct 26th. The application logs showed a ton of 17883 events leading up to a reboot. After the reboot everything was fine but we were still scratching our heads. Fast forward 6 days... it happened again. Then again 2 days later. The last night. Today it has happened three times to far. The timeline is fairly predictable when it happens: Trans log backups. Login failure for "user2". Minidump Another minidump for the scheduler Repeated 17883 events. Server fails little by little until it won't accept any requests. Reboot is all that gets us going again (a band-aid) Interesting, though, is that the server box itself doesn't seem to have any problems. CPU usage is normal. Network connectivity is fine. We can remote in and look at logs. Management studio does eventually bog down, though. Today, for the first time, we tried stopping services instead of a reboot. All services stopped on their own except for the SQL Server service. We finally did an "end task" on that one and were able to bring everything back up. It worked fine for about 30 minutes until we started seeing timeouts and 17883's again. This time, probably because we didn't reboot all the way, we saw a bunch of 844 events mixed in with the 17883's. Our entire tech team here is scratching heads... some ideas we're kicking around: MS Cumulative Update hit around the same time as when we first had a problem. Since then, we've rolled it back. Maybe it didn't rollback all the way. The situation looks and feels like an unhandled "stack overflow" (no relation) in that it starts small and compounds over time. Problem with this is that there isn't significant CPU usage. At any rate, we're not ruling SQL 2005 bug out at all. Maybe we added one too many import processes and have reached our limit on this box. (hard to believe). Looking at SQLDUMP0151.log at the time of one of the crashes. There are some "login failures" and then there are two stack dumps. 1st a normal stack dump, 2nd for a scheduler dump.   • Why the Enter key in a Mac keyboard is mapped to Level?

    Just installing Ubuntu for the first time, glad to ditch Win 7. I have a KVM switch and also a Mac, hence I'm using a Mac keyboard (the full size alu one) Everything's pretty cool. First thing I wondered is why the numeric keypad doesn't work? Oh, I have to find the num lock key (which should default to on, sensibly, no?) which isn't labelled as such on a Mac keyboard. Ok no problem. Then for some reason the Enter key on the keypad doesn't work still. Check the keyboard layout (set to 'English UK Macintosh')... inspecting the layout the Enter key is mapped to something called 'Level' - WTF is 'Level'? Everything else about the keyboard works great ie the £ $ # @ " are all perfect, volume control works as expected... why this weird key mapping on the Enter key? More importantly... how do I change it to work as an Enter key ?

    I have ubuntu 10.04 on my mac, and i have realized that when i pluged in an USB keyboard (PC) and turn on the numeric keypad if then i removed the keyboard, the keyboard on the mac (this sounds odd, not english spoken person sorry) is completely lost. Let me try to explain, when removing the USB keyboard with the numeric keypad activated, the built in mac keyboard is mapped like a numeric keyboard ONLY, j=1 k=2 l=3 u=4 ... and so on, and the others keys doesnt work, and the only way to restore normal behaviour is connecting the USB keyboard and turn off from there the numeric keypad, and then removing the usb. Is this behaviour ok? Is this a feature or a bug? Macbook 4.1 regards

  • What is the best way to code the XNA Game Server for FPS game?

    I'm writing a FPS XNA game. It gonna be multiplayer so I came up with following: I'm making two different assemblies — one for the game logic and the second for drawing it and the game irrelevant stuff (like rocket trails). The type of the connection is client-server (not peer-to-peer), so every client at first connects to the server and then the game begins. I'm completly decided to use XNA.Framework.Game class for the clients to run their game in window (or fullscreen) and the GameComponent/DrawableGameComponent classes to store the game objects and update&draw them on each frame. Next, I want to get the answer to the question: What should I do on the server side? I got few options: Create my own Game class on the server, which will process all the game logic (only, no graphics). The reason why I am not using the standart Game class is when I call Game.Run() the white window appears and I cant figure out how to get rid of it. Use somehow the original XNA's Game class, which is already has the GameComponent collection and Update event (60 times per second, just what I need). UPDATE: I got more questions: First, what socket mode should I use? TCP or UDP? And how to actually let the client know that this packet is meant to be processed after that one? Second, if I is going to use exacly GameComponent class for the game objects which is stored and process on the server, how to make them to be drawn on the client? Inherit them (while they are combined to an assembly)? Something else?

  • How to view files from host? (running inside VMWare Fusion)

    I have just finished moving my development server into a Ubuntu 10.04 Server VM in VMWare Fusion 3. I have all of my mysql and tomcat stuff running and am now trying to connect to my actual site files which are stored on my mac under /{User Root}/Workspace/ColdFusion/. I know that normally you should be able to setup a shared folder in VMWare and find it under /mnt/hgfs/{Share Name}, but I can't find it. I am not sure if I have to manually mount it or what.

  • XAMPP won't start Apache on Mac OS

    When I try starting Apache from the XAMPP control panel (Mac OSX Snow Leopard), I get the following error popup and Apache won't start: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/apachectl: line 70: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 XAMPP was running perfectly 10 minutes earlier. I stopped Apache to add some .conf files and it failed on restart. I removed all the new .conf files (i.e. reverted it to how it was before) but now I get the above message. EDIT: I've checked AppMonitor and I see the "httpd" processes (one by _www nested within root). Just tried quitting these but they're auto-restarted on new process IDs and it didn't solve the problem.

  • Registering publicly Mail server and Web server in a free dns server

    I'm trying to host the e-mails and the site of our company into our private server. I've already followed the Gentoo Virtual Mailhosting System with Postfix Guide and my mail server is working (actually it sends mails for the local users and for external users it goes to spam) and know how to set an Apache 2 server. What I don't know (and I mean really don't) is how to make them public. I did some research and found that I should ask my ISP to change the reverse DNS to my company domain in order to prevent my mails to be marked as spam, they are doing. I already know I have to configure a DNS Server, it seems like my register provider already has one but I don't know how I can configure CNET, A, MX, TXT and all those tags (Is it tags the name?) and If I must do some other configuration on my server. My Server: Linux mail 3.2.21-gentoo #1 SMP My /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 mail.example.com.br example example.com.br ::1 mail.example.com.br mail example.com.br My /etc/conf.d/hostname: hostname ="mail" What am I missing?   • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...   • Project Server 2010 Beta - can't connect Project client to projects hosted on server

    We have a Project 2010 Beta installed on SharePoint 2010 Beta as test set-up whilst we wait for the release versions. Whilst the installation seemed to complete without any issues we're unable to open any projects within the Project 2010 client app. Project pops up an error 'Could not retrieve server initialization data'. My local event logs list some errors from MSSOAP that simply state an unanticipated error occurred during the processing of the request. The server doesn't log any errors. The Sharepoint set up is a farm containing 3 SharePoint servers. I log in to server 'PORTAL' but the Project Server stuff is configured to run on one of the other SharePoint boxes. I presume others have managed to get this working - has anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong. Everything is patched correctly as far as I can tell.

    Hi, I was using MacOSX 10.5 on my MacBook until today and I had 4GB of memory there. Now I have updated to MacOSX 10.6 and it only displays 3GB. Why is that? How can I fix it? Also, I am a bit wondering why most people (well, most of the Google hits explained the 3GB issue that way -- leaving out the fact that it has worked earlier) are saying that a 32bit system can under no circumstances access more than 3.2GB. Don't we have PAE nowadays in most systems? Thanks, Albert

  • iPhone tethering via USB not working

    I can't get USB tethering to work. My setup: iMac with Mac OS 10.6.2 iPhone 3G, Sofware version 3.1.2 (Build 7D11) The phone shows up in iTunes and syncing works as it should. I went to System Preferences / Network and added the iPhone as a Network Service. To the right there is a status message for the selected service. With the iPhone not plugged in, the status message reads: Either the cable for iPhone is not plugged in or the device is not responding. With the iPhone plugged in, the status message reads: Either the cable for iPhone USB is not plugged in or the device is not responding. Almost identical messages, the only difference is "USB". Any clues?

  • What free space thresholds/limits are advisable for 640 GB and 2 TB hard disk drives with ZEVO ZFS on OS X?

    Assuming that free space advice for ZEVO will not differ from advice for other modern implementations of ZFS … Question Please, what percentages or amounts of free space are advisable for hard disk drives of the following sizes? 640 GB 2 TB Thoughts A standard answer for modern implementations of ZFS might be "no more than 96 percent full". However if apply that to (say) a single-disk 640 GB dataset where some of the files most commonly used (by VirtualBox) are larger than 15 GB each, then I guess that blocks for those files will become sub optimally spread across the platters with around 26 GB free. I read that in most cases, fragmentation and defragmentation should not be a concern with ZFS. Sill, I like the mental picture of most fragments of a large .vdi in reasonably close proximity to each other. (Do features of ZFS make that wish for proximity too old-fashioned?) Side note: there might arise the question of how to optimise performance after a threshold is 'broken'. If it arises, I'll keep it separate. Background On a 640 GB StoreJet Transcend (product ID 0x2329) in the past I probably went beyond an advisable threshold. Currently the largest file is around 17 GB –  – and I doubt that any .vdi or other file on this disk will grow beyond 40 GB. (Ignore the purple masses, those are bundles of 8 MB band files.) Without HFS Plus: the thresholds of twenty, ten and five percent that I associate with Mobile Time Machine file system need not apply. I currently use ZEVO Community Edition 1.1.1 with Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8.2, but I'd like answers to be not too version-specific. References, chronological order ZFS Block Allocation (Jeff Bonwick's Blog) (2006-11-04) Space Maps (Jeff Bonwick's Blog) (2007-09-13) Doubling Exchange Performance (Bizarre ! Vous avez dit Bizarre ?) (2010-03-11) … So to solve this problem, what went in 2010/Q1 software release is multifold. The most important thing is: we increased the threshold at which we switched from 'first fit' (go fast) to 'best fit' (pack tight) from 70% full to 96% full. With TB drives, each slab is at least 5GB and 4% is still 200MB plenty of space and no need to do anything radical before that. This gave us the biggest bang. Second, instead of trying to reuse the same primary slabs until it failed an allocation we decided to stop giving the primary slab this preferential threatment as soon as the biggest allocation that could be satisfied by a slab was down to 128K (metaslab_df_alloc_threshold). At that point we were ready to switch to another slab that had more free space. We also decided to reduce the SMO bonus. Before, a slab that was 50% empty was preferred over slabs that had never been used. In order to foster more write aggregation, we reduced the threshold to 33% empty. This means that a random write workload now spread to more slabs where each one will have larger amount of free space leading to more write aggregation. Finally we also saw that slab loading was contributing to lower performance and implemented a slab prefetch mechanism to reduce down time associated with that operation.   • Mac OS X behind OpenLDAP and Samba

    I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam/' path=/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam/ err=-43 uid=9000 euid=9000 If you're wondering where /Network/Servers/IP/home/sam comes from, it's from a couple of blogs that said the OpenLDAP attribute apple-user-homeDirectory should have that value and the NFSHomeDirectory on the mac should point to apple-user-homeDirectory I also set the attr apple-user-homeurl to <home_dir><url>smb://172.17.148.186/sam/</url><path></path></home_dir> which I found on this forum. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :) After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here.
