  • How can I debug what's slowing down new session logins?

    - by David Planella
For a while, I've had an issue whereby it takes up to 5 minutes from the moment I enter my password in Lightdm's login screen until I can do anything with my computer. That's on Ubuntu 12.04. During that time, I see there is disk activity, but I'm not sure how to figure out what's causing it and whether that is the real cause. I've played around with Bootchart unsuccessfully. Any ideas on what the best way to debug this issue is?

  • Scanning the Error Log with PowerShell

    - by AllenMWhite
One of the most important things you can do as a DBA is to keep tabs on the errors reported in the error log, but there's a lot of information there and sometimes it's hard to find the 'good stuff'. You can open the errorlog file directly in a text editor and search for errors but that gets tedious, and string searches generally return just the lines with the error message numbers, and in the error log the real information you want is in the line after that. PowerShell 2.0 introduced a new cmdlet...(read more)

  • Oracle Database I/O Performance Tuning Using Benchmark Factory

The real test of how heavily an Oracle database will tax its underlying I/O subsystem and related infrastructure is to actually tax that infrastructure using representative database application workloads. Jim Czuprynski tells you how to choose appropriate database schema(s) for realistic testing, how to create example TPC-E and TPC-H database schemas and how to perform initial loading of these schemas using Quest Benchmark Factory.

  • General programming techniques to speed up coding time

    - by mcwise
I am preparing for a programming contest in C++ where it is all about producing working code in a short time. An example would be to use a macro to get the minimum of two ints(but I was told that you shouldn't use macros as they are not type-safe) or using memsets to initialize arrays (but I was told that you shouldn't use memsets in C++). This leads to the question, what kind of coding techniques exist to use at a real job?

  • what is the task of a coach in acm programming contests?

    - by Layla
In the university that I am working they have decided to participate in the ACM regionals for the first time, they would like to appoint me like a coach. I have never been into that situation before and have not found so much information about it, so what is the real work of a coach in those contests? Sometimes I have found experienced programmers like coaches, but others are just people with no so good programming skills; so what is all about?

  • Generating Data for Database Tests

It is more and more essential for developers to work on development databases that have realistic data in both type and quantity, but without using real data. It isn't exactly easy, even with third-party tools to hand. Phil Factor shows how it can be done, taking the classic PUBS database and giving it a more realistic set of data. • Is Operator Overloading supported in C

    - by caramel23
Today when I was reading about LCC(windows) compiler I find out it has the implemention for operator overloading . I'm puzzled because after a bit of googling , it has been confirm that operator overloading ain't support in standard C , but I read some people's comment mentioning LCC is ANSI-compliant . So my real question is , is LCC really standard C or it's just like objective-c , a C variant with object-oriented feature ?

  • What legal considerations do I need to have when programming?

    - by JustJohn
Recently I worked with a group to create a logging system for tutoring labs to track Tutor hours, and usage of the labs. We had to change the design a fair amount to be in compliance with FERPA. My question stems from the curiosity that in my course of study there has never been a real mention of how people in this field have to deal with complying with the law in their work. So I would like to know how much programmers have to consider the law in the work they do.

  • How do you refer to the user using the application vs. the user being edited? [closed]

    - by Roman Royter
Suppose you are developing an administration page where the administrator can edit other users. In your code you want to distinguish between the user sitting in front of the screen, and the user being edited. What do you call the two? User, CurrentUser, EditedUser, CurrentEditUser, etc? Note that the admin user isn't necessarily real admin, they can be just an ordinary user given rights to edit other users.
