• How do I speed up XML parsing operation?

  I currently have a php script set up to do some xml parsing. Sometimes the script is set as an on page include and other times it is accessed via an ajax call. The problem is the load time for this particular page is very long. I started to think that the php I had written to find what I need in the XML was written poorly and my script is very resource intense. After much research and testing the problem is indeed not my scripting (well perhaps you could consider it a problem with my scripting), but it looks like it takes a long time to load the particular xml sources. My code is like such: $source_recent = 'my xml feed'; $source_additional = 'the other feed I need'; $xmlstr_recent = file_get_contents($source_recent); $feed_recent = new SimpleXMLElement($xmlstr_recent); $xmlstr_additional = file_get_contents($source_additional); $feed_additional = new SimpleXMLElement($xmlstr_additional); In all my testing, the above code is what takes the time, not the additional processing I do below. Is there anyway around this or am I at the mercy of the load time of the xml URL's? One crazy thought I had to get around it is to load the xml contents into a db every so often, then just query the db for what I need. Thoughts? Ideas?

• SharePoint 2010 PowerShell Script to Find All SPShellAdmins with Database Name

  Problem     Yesterday on Twitter my friend @cacallahan asked for some help on how she could get all SharePoint 2010 SPShellAdmin users and the associated database name.  I spent a few minutes and wrote up a script that gets this information and decided I’d post it here for others to enjoy.     Background     The Get-SPShellAdmin commandlet returns a listing of SPShellAdmins for the given database Id you pass in, or the farm configuration database by default.  For those unfamiliar, SPShellAdmin access is necessary for non-admin users to run PowerShell commands against a SharePoint 2010 farm (content and configuration databases specifically).  Click here to read an excellent guest post article my friend John Ferringer (twitter) wrote on the Hey Scripting Guy! blog regarding granting SPShellAdmin access.  Solution     Below is the script I wrote (formatted for space and to include comments) to provide the information needed. • What kind of website or coding is suitable and safe for an artist's website

  I have a web design project that is related to a singer, and I used Joomla for my previous project and designed good music websites. But for this project I cannot find a suitable template to edit and use. As the website is so simple and does not have any special functionality, I'm thinking about creating a website with just simple CSS, html and jQuery. I'm Good at them and can make a perfect look but I am not sure about the security. In Joomla I use different security plugins but do not know about a client-side scripting. So generally I need your ideas, about the following questions: - Is Joomla and generally CMS a good option for a music website? - How famous artists' website is base on? CMS or Client-side scripting? - Do you recommend to create it manually without using and CMS or template? - An do you suggest WordPress for this type of websites? (The website will have these pages: Biography, News, Music (with a music player), Photos, videos and contacts). That's it! • Ubuntu 12.04 Server ping gateway responds with destination host unreachable

  I consider myself fairly avid with Ubuntu and Linux, but this one has me stumped. I built up a Xen Server using Ubuntu 12.04 as the base operating system. It has multiple domUs running on it. My home network has a statically defined network where I got all the network connectivity going peachy. The server was moved to a permanent home this morning. So, the network configuration on the main system had to change. Again, another static network, but now I can't ping the upstream gateway from the host. As the VMs use this NIC over a bridge, they too are broken. Ping responds with "destination host unreachable." I simplified the networking down to a simple static network as seen below (no bridge or anything) just to get it to work. Here's the contents of my /etc/network/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 216.7.188.228 gateway 216.7.188.225 netmask 255.255.255.240 broadcast 216.7.188.255 network 216.7.188.0 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 Here's the contents of route -n 0.0.0.0 216.7.188.225 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 216.7.188.224 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.240 U 0 0 0 eth0 And the results of pinging the gateway: PING 216.7.188.225 (216.7.188.225) 56(84) bytes of data. I did try using eth1 (as there are two NICS on the server (in case the MAC address got flipped on bootup). No success there. Yes, the cable is in the right port now :) Any thoughts? • Ubuntu 13.10 No Sound

  I was running 13.04 since last monday and just today i upgraded to 13.10, in both of these version i have not managed to get my sound working. I have gone into alsamixer and disabled auto mute and the volumes are up. However if somebody thinks they can help me fix this i will gladly follow any steps. • Benefits of Server-side Coding

  There are numerous advantages to server scripting languages over client side languages in regards to creating web sites that are more compelling compared to a standard static site. Server side scripting are scripts that are executed on a web server during the compilation of data to return to a client. These scripts allow developers to modify the content that is being sent to the user prior to the return of the data to the user as well as store information about the user. In addition, server side scripts allow for a controllable environment in which they can be executed. This cannot be said for client side languages because the developer cannot control the users’ environment compared to a web server. Some users may turn off client scripts, some may be only allow limited access on the system and others may be able to gain full control of the environment.  I have been developing web applications for over 9 years, and I have used server side languages for most of the applications I have built.  Here is a list of common things I have developed with server side scripts. List of Common Generic Functionality Send Email FTP Files Security/ Access Control Encryption URL rewriting Data Access Data Creation I/O Access The one important feature server side languages will help me with on my website is Data Access because my component will be backed with a SQL server database. I believe that form validation is one instance where I might see server-side scripts and JavaScript used interchangeably because it does not matter how or where the data is validated as long as the data that gets inserted is valid. However, I would have to say that my personal experience would have to sway me in deciding what type of languages to use for form validation because they both have advantages and disadvantages based on the each situation.

• I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system? • How do I fix the HDMI/DVI display output with Intel HD 4000 Graphics in 12.04?

  I have an Alienware Dell PC with Intel HD 4000 Graphics (Ivy Bridge) as verified by the output of lspci | grep VGA posted below. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) The PC only has HDMI and DVI display outputs and using the HDMI output I am only being offered abnormal resolutions. As you can see below it does not even list HDMI1 or DVI1 but just only a fallback. $ export DISPLAY=:0.0 && xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1360 x 768, maximum 1360 x 768 default connected 1360x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1360x768 0.0* 1024x768 0.0 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 How can I fix this? Does it just need to be configured differently or will I need to use a newer kernel (as Intel Graphics drivers are included in the kernel)? Some of us (including I) have grown a bit impatient and have turned to scripting languages to fill the void. But, once closures have finally arrived to Java: how will they effect the Java Community? • Google Music Player doesn't work

  I'm trying to log in on Google Music Player application but doesn't work. I get the message below: Login Failed Could not identify your computer. Learn More On Google Help it says that it doesn't run on virtual machines, which is not my case, but I have a virtualbox installed though, and it says some people get to work if they disable their bridge network. The thing is I don't have any bridge interface, even if I remove all virtualbox modules I still get this message. • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

  I used a gridview in this app. When i run it at Verison 1.6 or newer, it's OK. But i can not get this gridview in 1.5. • Browsing Your ADF Application Module Pooling Params with WLST

  In ADF 11g you can of course use Enterprise Manager (EM) to browse and configure the settings used by ADF Business Components  Application Modules, as shown here for one of my sample deployed applications. This screen you can access from the EM homepage by pulling down the Application Deployment menu, and then ADF > Configure ADF Business Components. Then select the profile that you are actually using (Hint: look in the DataBindings.cpx file to work this out - probably the "Local" version unless you've explicitly changed it. )So, from this screen you can change the pooling parameters and the world is good. But what if you don't have EM installed? In that case you can use the WebLogic scripting capabilities to view (and Update) the MBean Properties. Explanation The pooling parameters and many others are handled through Message Driven Beans that are created for the deployed application in the server. In the case of the ADF BC pooling parameters, this MBean will combine the configuration deployed as part of the application, along with any overrides defined as -D environement commands on the JVM startup for the application server instance. Using WLST to Browse the Bean ValuesFor our purposes here I'm doing this interactively, although you can also write a script or write Java to achieve the same thing.Step 0: Before You Start You will need the followingAccess to the console on the machine that is running the serverThe WebLogic Admin username and password (I'll use weblogic/password as my example here - yours will be different)The name of the deployed application (in this example FMWdh_application1)The package path to the bc4j.xcfg file (in this example oracle.demo.fmwdh.model.service.common.bc4j.xcfg) This is based on the default path for your model project so it shoudl be fairly easy to work out.The BC configuration your AM is actually running with (look in the DataBindings.cpx for that. In this example DealHelpServiceDeployed is the profile being used..)Step 1: Start the WLST consoleTo start at the beginning, you need to run the WLST command but that needs a little setup:Change to the wlserver_10.3/server/bin directory e.g. under your Fusion Middleware Home[oracle@mymachine] cd /home/oracle/FMW_R1/wlserver_10.3/server/binSet your environment using the setWLSEnv script. e.g. on Oracle Enterprise Linux:[oracle@mymachine bin] source setWLSEnv.shStart the WLST interactive console[oracle@mymachine bin] java weblogic.WLSTInitializing WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST) ...Welcome to WebLogic Server Administration Scripting ShellType help() for help on available commandswls:/offline> Step 2:Enter the WLST commandsConnect to the server wls:> connect('weblogic','password')Change to the Custom root, this is where the AMPooling MBeans are registered wls:> custom()Change to the b4j MBean directorywls:> cd ('oracle.bc4j.mbean.config')Work out the correct directory for the AM configuration you need. This is the difficult bit, not because it's hard to do, but because the names are long. The structure here is such that every child MBean is displayed at the same level as the parent, so for each deployed application there will be many directories shown. In fact, do an ls() command here and you'll see what I mean. Each application will have one MBean for the app as a whole, and then for each deployed configuration in the .xcfg file you'll see: One for the config entry itself, and then one each for Security, DB Connection and AM Pooling. So if you deploy an app with just one configuration you'll see 5 directories, if it has two configurations in the .xcfg you'll see 9 and so on.The directory you are looking for will contain those bits of information you gathered in Step 0, specifically the Application Name, the configuration you are using and the xcfg name: First of all narrow your list to just those directories returned from the ls() command that begin oracle.bc4j.mbean.config:name=AMPool. These identify the AM pooling MBeans for all the deployed applications. • WebLogic Server JMS WLST Script – Who is Connected To My Server

  Ever want to know who was connected to your WebLogic Server instance for troubleshooting?  An email exchange about this topic and JMS came up this week, and I’ve heard it come up once or twice before too.  Sometimes it’s interesting or helpful to know the list of JMS clients (IP Addresses, JMS Destinations, message counts) that are connected to a particular JMS server.  This can be helpful for troubleshooting.  Tom Barnes from the WebLogic Server JMS team provided some helpful advice: The JMS connection runtime mbean has “getHostAddress”, which returns the host address of the connecting client JVM as a string.  A connection runtime can contain session runtimes, which in turn can contain consumer runtimes.  The consumer runtime, in turn has a “getDestinationName” and “getMemberDestinationName”.  I think that this means you could write a WLST script, for example, to dump all consumers, their destinations, plus their parent session’s parent connection’s host addresses.    Note that the client runtime mbeans (connection, session, and consumer) won’t necessarily be hosted on the same JVM as a destination that’s in the same cluster (client messages route from their connection host to their ultimate destination in the same cluster). • Updating a database connection password using a script

  An interesting customer requirement that I thought was worthy of sharing today. Thanks to James for the requirement and Bryan for the proposed solution and me for testing the solution and proving it works :0) A customers implementation of Sarbanes Oxley requires them to change all database account passwords every 90 days. This is scripted leveraging shell scripts today for most of their environments. But how can they manage the BI Publisher connections? Now, the customer is running 11g and therefore using weblogic on the middle tier, which is the first clue to Bryans proposed solution. To paraphrase and embellish Bryan's solution a little; why not use a JNDI connection from BIP to the database. Then employ the web logic scripting engine to make updates to the JNDI as needed? BIP is completely uninvolved and with a little 'timing' users will be completely unaware of the password updates i.e. change the password when reports are not being executed. Perfect! James immediately tracked down the WLST script that could be used here, http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=4261 (thanks Ravish) Now it was just a case of testing the theory. Some steps: Create the JNDI connection in WLS Create the JNDI connection in BI Publisher pointing to the WLS connection Build new data models using or re-point data sources to use the JNDI connection. Create the WLST script to update the WLS JNDI password as needed. Test! Some details. Creating the JNDI connection in web logic is pretty straightforward. Log into hte console and look for Data Sources under the Services section of the home page and click it Click New >> Generic Datasource Give the connection a name. For the JNDI name, prefix it with 'jdbc/' so I have 'jdbc/localdb' - this name is important you'll need it on the BIP side. Select your db type - this will influence the drivers and information needed on the next page. Being a company man, Im using an Oracle db. Click Next Select the driver of choice, theres lots I know, you can read about them I just chose 'Oracle's Driver (Thin) for Instance connections; Versions 9.0.1 and later' Click Next >> Next Fill out the db name (SID), server, port, username to connect and password >> Next Test the config to ensure you can connect. >> Next Now you need to deploy the connection to your BI server, select it and click Next. You're done with the JNDI config. Creating the JNDI connection on the Publisher side is covered here. Just remember to the connection name you created in WLS e.g. 'jdbc/localdb' Not gonna tell you how to do this, go read the user guide :0) Suffice to say, it works. This requires a little reading around the subject to understand the scripting engine and how to execute scripts. Nicely covered here. However a bit of googlin' and I found an even easier way of running the script. ${ServerHome}/common/bin/wlst.sh updatepwd.py Where updatepwd.py is my script file, it can be in another directory. As part of the wlst.sh script your environment is set up for you so its very simple to execute. The nitty gritty: Need to take Ravish's script above and create a file with a .py extension. Its going to need some modification, as he explains on the web page, to make it work in your environment. I played around with it for a while but kept running into errors. The script as is, tries to loop through all of your connections and modify the user and passwords for each. Not quite what we are looking for. Remember our requirement is to just update the password for a given connection. I also found another issue with the script. WLS 10.x does not allow updates to passwords using clear type ie un-encrypted text while the server is in production mode. Its a bit much to set it back to developer mode bounce it, change the passwords and then bounce and then change back to production and bounce again. I have hardcoded the password into the file but you can pass it as a parameter as needed using the properties file method. Im not going to get into the detail of that here but its covered with an example here. Couple of points to note: 1. The change to the password requires a server bounce to get the changes picked up. You can add that to the shell script you will use to call the script above. 2. The script above needs to be run from the MW_HOME\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain directory to get the encryption libraries set correctly. My command to run the whole script was: d:\oracle\bi_mw\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\wlst.cmd updatepwd.py - where wlst.cmd is the scripting command line and updatepwd.py was my update password script above. I have not quite spoon fed everything you need to make it a robust script but at least you know you can do it and you can work out the rest I think :0)

• EM CLI, diving in and beyond!

With this in mind, I put together two screen watches on Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c command line interface, or EM CLI as it is also known. There is a wealth of information on any topic that you choose to read about, from manual pages to coding documents…might I even say blog posts? In our busy lives it is so nice to just sit back with a short video, watch and learn enough to dive in. Doing more in less time, is the essence of EM CLI. It enables you to script fundamental and complex administrative tasks in an elegant way, thanks to the Jython scripting language. Repetitive tasks can be scripted and reused again and again. Sure, a Graphical User Interface provides a more intuitive step by step approach to tasks, and it provides a way of quickly becoming familiar with a product and its many features, and it is definitely the way to go when viewing performance data and historical trending…but for repetitive and complex tasks, scripting is the way to go! Lets us take the everyday task of creating an administrator. Using EM CLI in interactive mode the command could look like this.. emcli>create_user(name='jan.doe', type='EXTERNAL_USER') This command creates an administrator called jan.doe which is an externally authenticated user, possibly LDAP or SSO, defined by the EXTERNAL_USER tag. The create_user procedure takes many arguments; see the documentation for more information. Now, where EM CLI really shines and shows power is in creating multiple users. Regardless of the number, tens or thousands, the effort is the same. With the use of a standard programming construct, a loop, you can place your create_user() procedure within it. Using a loop allows you to iterate through a previously created list, creating new users until the list is complete. Using EM CLI in Script mode, your Jython loop would look something like this… for user in list_of_users:       create_user(name=user, expire=’true’, password=’welcome123’) This Jython code snippet iterates through a previously defined list of names, list_of_users, and iterates through the list, taking each name, user in this case, and creates an administrator sets the password to welcome123, but forces the user to reset it when they first login. This is only one of over four hundred procedures created to expose Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c functionality in a powerful and programmatic way. It is a few months since we released EM CLI with scripting option. We are seeing many users adapt to this fun and powerful way of using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. What are the first steps?
