• Some domain names not resolving on local network

  I am not really sure where to start with this one... I have a small network setup with some linux servers (Ubuntu 11.04 Server). 2 servers are running BIND 9 (NS01, NS02), they are configured as master and slave respectively. 1 server is running Zimbra ZCS 7.1.1 (MX01), it has a private BIND 9 server running to achieve a split DNS configuration. This DNS server does not interact with the other two, it forwards queries it can resolve to the other 2 that is it. No zone transfers. Zimbra is hosting 3 domains at the moment, solignis.local, solignis.com, campbellsurvey.net. The problem From with in my network I cannot connect to mail.campbellsurvey.net. When I mean I cannot connect, I mean if I open firefox and type https://mail.campbellsurvey.net I go nowhere, the address is supposed to connect to my Zimbra webmail. But it goes nowhere, the odd thing is if I try the same task from outside of the network it brings the website up like normal. If I try to create an account in thunderbird to connect to the same server using IMAP4 or POP3 I get an error saying that thunderbird cannot find the domain name. Even the zimbra client fails too. It is like from with in my own walls that campbellsurvey.net does not exist. But if step outside I can get it work with no problem at all. I had thought maybe the problem was with the DNS server (BIND 9), so just to eliminate it as a possibility I configured a windows server I use for VMware VCenter as a DNS server to see what would happen. The result was the same, its like something is preventing connections to those domains, but I have checked various firewalls and such. I checked port forwards, etc. So I am running out of ideas I know this is not a lot of information to work from and I can give more details about certain things as needed. I am just trying to figure out what could be going wrong. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.

  I have a little problem: the Winform control (that contains between others WPF) suddenly stopped to be displayed in Designer. • what differs a computer scientist/software engineer to regular people who learn programming language and APIs?

  In University, we learn and reinvent the wheel a lot to truly learn the programming concepts. For example, we may learn assembly language to understand, what happens inside the box, and how the system operates, when we execute our code. This helps understanding higher level concepts deeper. For example, memory management like in C is just an abstraction of manually managed memory contents and addresses. The problem is, when we're going to work, usually productivity is required more. I could program my own containers, or string class, or date/time (using POSIX with C system call) to do the job, but then, it would take much longer time to use existing STL or Boost library, which abstract all of those thing and very easy to use. This leads to an issue, that a regular person doesn't need to get through all the low level/under the hood stuffs, who learns only one programming language and using language-related APIs. These people may eventually compete with the mainstream graduates from computer science or software engineer and call themselves programmers. At first, I don't think it's valid to call them programmers. I used to think, a real programmer needs to understand the computer deeply (but not at the electronic level). But then I changed my mind. After all, they get the job done and satisfy all the test criteria (logic, performance, security...), and in business environment, who cares if you're an expert and understand how computer works or not. You may get behind the "amateurs" if you spend to much time learning about how things work inside. It is totally valid for those people to call themselves programmers. This makes me confuse. So, after all, programming should be considered an universal skill? Does programming language and concepts matter or the problems we solve matter? For example, many C/C++ vs Java and other high level language, one of the main reason is because C/C++ features performance, as well as accessing low level facility. One of the main reason (in my opinion), is coding in C/C++ seems complex, so people feel good about it (not trolling anyone, just my observation, and my experience as well. Try to google "C hacker syndrome"). While Java on the other hand, made for simplifying programming tasks to help developers concentrate on solving their problems. Based on Java rationale, if the programing language keeps evolve, one day everyone can map their logic directly with natural language. Everyone can program. On that day, maybe real programmers are mathematicians, who could perform most complex logic (including business logic and academic logic) without worrying about installing/configuring compiler, IDEs? What's our job as a computer scientist/software engineer? To solve computer specific problems or to solve problems in general? The example requires only basic knowledge about the programming language, but focus more on problem solving with the language. In sum, what differs a computer scientist/software engineer to regular people who learn programming language and APIs? A mathematician can be considered a programmer, if he is good enough to use programming language to implement his formula. Can we programmer do this? Probably not for most of us, since we specialize about computer, not math. An electronic engineer, who learns how to use C to program for his devices, can be considered a programmer. If the programming languages keep being simplified, may one day the software engineers, who implements business logic and create softwares, be obsolete? (Not for computer scientist though, since many of the CS topics are scientific, and science won't change, but technology will).

• LVM / Device Mapper maps wrong device

  Hi, I run a LVM setup on a raid1 created by mdadm. md2 is based on sda6 (major:minor 8:6) and sdb6 (8:22). md2 is partition 9:2. The VG on top of md2 has 4 LVs, var, home, usr, tmp. First the problem: While booting it seems as if the device mapper takes the wrong partition for the mapping!   After installing PHP 5.3, Windows is unable to start Apache 2.2. Apache's error log is empty, no error message on startup: C:\Programme\Apache\bin>httpd -k start C:\Programme\Apache\bin>httpd -k stop The Apache2.2 service is not started. C:\Programme\Apache\bin>httpd -k config Reconfiguring the Apache2.2 service The Apache2.2 service is successfully installed. Testing httpd.conf.... Errors reported here must be corrected before the service can be started. I have no clue where to look for the cause. php5apache2_2.dll is copied to the Apache modules folder. • How to make Amazon EC2 not cause SSL invalid error in browser

  I use SSL certificate for a web site I set up in Amazon EC2 Machine Instance. The SSL certificate is for one domain name, which is not public DNS for the Amazon Machine Instance. The browser always complains the mismatch in the domain name because it compares the domain name of the SSL certificate to the Amazon public DNS. How can I set up not to cause this problem? I tried both domain name forwarding and A Record setting. Maybe it's because I'm not so familiar with Amazon EC2 and I haven't configured domain name correctly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've installed Amazon's aws.amazon.com/rds certificate in the client machine's Trusted Root Certification Authorities store. However, when I connect to the RDS instance (using SQL Server Management Studio 2012) and check off "Encrypt Connection", I get the following error: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process.   I recently made some changes to my Ubuntu computer so that a domain name resolved to my local copy of Apache. I edited /etc/hosts and added 127.0.0.1 thisbit.example.com Then set up a VirtualHost for the responses I wishes to create. That all works fine and my testing is now shooting on ahead without harm or risk tot he production server. Now for my next trick I need to test the authentication and so need to do this with HTTPS Basically https://auth.example.com needs to work on my PC without the SSL causing an issue which I imagine would be the case as I am clearly not the true https://auth.example.com but for the basis of this exercise I need to pretend that I am. Now it might be that the Apps I'm testing don't worry about checking the certificate. (Many are in Java which I'm no expert with). What gotchas am I likely to encounter and what is the best way of not letting my own hacks spoil my testing? I'm guessing the place to start is to enable SSL with Apcahe... I've never done that before as it has never come up before.

• Computer specs for a large database

  What sort of computer specs (CPU, RAM, disk speed) should I use for running queries on a database of 200+ million records? The queries are for a research project, so there is only one "user" and only one query will be running at a time. I tried it on my own laptop with SQL Server with an i3 processor, 2GB RAM, 5400 RPM disk and a simple query didn't finish even after 8+ hours. I have an option to connect a SSD via eSata and upgrade to 4GB RAM, but not sure if this will be enough... Thanks! Edit: The database is about 25 GB and the indexes are not setup properly. When I tried to add an index, I let it run for about 8 hours and it still hadn't finished so I gave up. Should I have more patience :)? In general, the queries will run once in a while and its ok even if it takes a couple hours to complete.... Also, the queries will produce probably about 10 million records which I need to process using Stata/Matlab and I'm concerned that my current laptop is not strong enough, but unsure of the bottleneck....

• Computer randomly freezes when playing games

  My computer just randomly freezes when playing certain games. It has happened to me in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty 4, and Blacklight: Retribution. It has not happened to me with other games like Tribes: Ascend yet, which leads me to believe it is a software-side issue related to maybe DirectX or PhysX? Also, temperatures seem stable. I used RivaTuner combined with MSI Afterburner, and at the time of freezing with BF:BC2, it gives: 62C, 67% GPU usage and 78.8FPS. During the session the max I have seen was 65C and 97% GPU usage. On Blacklight: Retribution, I've heard other people complain about the problem too. This is why it is such a mystery to me, is this actually a driver problem, or more a game problem? I've been able to play these games for long until I re-installed Windows 7 (because it was growing too full and slow). Before I had a 32bit Ultimate version, and now 64bit. • File transfer from MP3 player to computer

  I own an old 20GB Creative Zen jukebox (all external screws are gone on it LOL) and I would like to transfer files back to my PC to get them on my new iPod. Problem is, no matter what software I use (WinAMP, Creative Media Source or Windows Media Player), it just stops transferring files on my HD with an error message that says there is no more space on the destination folder. Problem is, there is still 320GB free. I tried lot of things like installing newer driver, latest Zen plug-in for Media Source, latest WinAMP version. Sometimes, it just works and then again, it stops working and I get this non-sense error. Restarting my PC sometime solves the issue by giving me enough time to transfer 10 or 15 more files and then I get the error again and again. Yesterday though I managed to transfer up to 3GB of MP3s on my computer before getting the error. Seems like I'm having a driver issue or a weird behavior from the player and/or the software I'm using. 3 different software can't reproduce the exact same issue by themselves so it must be something related to the driver. I can't find any post of any sort concerning such issue on old forums. Any idea?

  I have a situation where I have some input files like this: M2U0001.MPG M2U0180.MPG And I want to run a command (in a bash shell) on each similarly named file in the directory. I'd like the current file name to be given to this command as an input and a modified version of the filename to be given as an output file. Here's an example: ffmpeg -i M2U0001.MPG M2U0001_fixed.MPG I had the idea of using xargs and sed, but this is as far as I got: ls -1 *.MPG | xargs -I{} ffmpeg -i {} `echo {} | sed -r 's/[0-9]{2,}/&_fixed/'` But this results in the original filename being output in both positions. Am I totally going about this the wrong way? I found that if I echo the filename directly to the embedded chunk like this it works: echo M2U0001.MPG | sed -r 's/[0-9]{2,}/&_fixed/'

• Computer does not switch on after power outage

  VOLTAGE DROP OFF FOR PC does not restart The other day my pc was turned off due to power outage. Since that time the computer would not turn on again, no sign of life, it seems dead. I did several tests, changed the power outlet and disconnect the wires ... also I have reseated the cards ... but the result is that nothing changes. What can I do? Could there may be damage to the hardware due to the power outage? Note: the voltage drop is not due to a lightning storm and so is not due to damaged components (burnt card etc ...) • Is there a way to capture the "network user name" and the "host name" during a "login failed" alert

  I am a SQL Server 7 DBA and I would like to "improve" the default "Login failed" alert that brings SQL 7. I need a way to know what "user" (network user name) was trying to connect to the server (not only the SQL user account) and I would like to know from where the user was trying to connect (the hostname). Does someone know if this is possible? Using the SQL Profiler is not the best way since is a resource consuming task. Would be a way to setup an alert for doing this? Thanks in advance.

The problem is, now it's stuck in a "autochk not found" reboot sequence. I think the problem is that the boot sector is invisible to the drive now. So my question is, How can I use icacls to give back the full ownership, when the user I am giving it to is not on my machine? • Picking a linux compatible motherboard

  Last time I bought a new computer (I build them myself) I got a motherboard that had really poor linux support for a long time. Specifically the audio. I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around. I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why? AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference? To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are: Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server? Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056" I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this? The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.

• Shared printer stops working on clients but not host computer

  I have a Brother MFC-7420 USB all-in-one laser printer. It is plugin via USB to my Windows 7 x64 machine. I have it shared to a few users on my home network. My wife's laptop running Vista x64 can normally print fine to the printer. However it seems that every day or two, when she pushes print on a something it just sits in her laptop's print queue and never makes it to my desktop. The only thing that seems to fix this is if she restarts her laptop. Not a big deal but this problem is sort of annoying. I don't know if this affects but the laptop is put into hibernate at night and I turn my desktop off at night. Does anyone know why this happens and if there is something easy to do to fix the problem besides restart the computer? EDIT: I was thinking that maybe my wife's laptop loses its connection to the printer. Is there a way to reset a connection to a shared printer? Or maybe reauth with the printer?

• New Computer won't boot up

  I brought new components and put a computer together. I installed win7(32bit) and everything was working as it should. However my case came with two USB3 front ports I could not connect because of motherboard did not support USB3, so I swapped out the board for a new motherboad with USB3 connection. Now I put everything back together but it won't bootup. "Memory Ok" light stay on. Motherboad LED is on. There is power, all fans are on but I got no display. There is no activity in back of the systems, none of the peripheral connection in the back are working. I have tried the following but to no avail. Reboot multiple times Unplug power and plug the power back Reset the CMOS battery..let it stays out for 10 minutes or more. Unplug all peripheral device but no luck Reset memory..... nothing happen The only thing I did not do was remove the cpu...but I unplug everything else. Please help, thank you.

Application pool for "MyWebApp" is "DefaultAppPool" {.Net Framework: 4.0 ; Managed Pipeline Mode: Classic} The problem I am facing is I can access the website using http://localhost, http://IP.IP.IP.IP and http://MyMachineName But I can not access the Application other than using http://localhost/MyWebApp What should I do if I want to access the webapp using http://MyMachineName/MyWebApp OR http://IP.IP.IP.IP/MyWebApp Please note : I have already created an inbound rule to allow all HTTP traffic for port 80 in firewall settings.
